Indeed, if I set the 3 screens at the same scale (ie 200%) the problem
goes away.

[Bug 2026255] [NEW] New windows have weird behavior on the desktop

2023-07-06 Thread Alfredo Matas
Public bug reported:

I have 3 monitors, two QHD monitors and the screen of the laptop
attached. I'm using Gnome-shell with the extensions disabled. If a
window starts maximized it only takes a portion of the screen, if a
window starts unmaximized it automatically doubles the size when it
loses the focus. I have attached a small video of the behavior of the
middle QHD monitor.

[Bug 1565560] Re: yelp still using old GNOME logo

2016-04-04 Thread Alfredo Hernández
As Tim has commented, Yelp is an important part of stock GNOME, and it
should remain untouched. Technically, you could have XFCE, KDE, etc
programs in your Ubuntu GNOME machine; having a branded Help application
may lead to misunderstandings, as a user may think it will contain
documentation for all the programs, when this is clearly not true.

You can, indeed, unset attributes.
gvfs-set-attribute myfolder -t unset metadata::custom-icon would delete the
metadata::custom-icon attribute from myfolder.

[Bug 1292398] Re: Second screen position isn't saved from one session to another

2014-10-08 Thread Alfredo Tschamler
Same problem here. Ubuntu 14.04. GNOME Shell 3.10.4. All the issue started when
I switch from unity to gnome-shell. I hadn't this problem with unity. The
workaround gnome-settings-daemon --replace or update-monitor-position -
(http://bernaerts.dyndns.org/linux/74-ubuntu/309-ubuntu-dual-display-monitor-position-lost)

work for me, but these workaround cause that the lock screen shield get blank
(blue screen with the hour), and that is very annoying!

[Bug 1304061] [NEW] Nautilus does not start properly: creates PID but no window: starts as root

2014-04-07 Thread alfredo
Public bug reported:

Starting nautilus creates no window. From a terminal, I get:

 nautilus
** Message: Init Stock Icons
Initializing nautilus-ideviceinfo extension
Initializing nautilus-gdu extension
Initializing nautilus-open-terminal extension
nautilus-wipe-Message: Initializing

... and nothing else. Using ps I see:

ps -ef| grep nautilus
homer13567 1 1 12:07 ?00:00:00 nautilus /home/homer
homer13648 13581 0 12:07 pts/200:00:00 grep --color=auto nautilus

Using Ctrl-C or Ctrl-Z has no effect:
^C^C^C^Z^Z^Z-(nothing happens)

I have to kill it from another terminal or System Monitor.

Starting as root I get:

 nautilus
** Message: Init Stock Icons
Initializing nautilus-ideviceinfo extension
Initializing nautilus-gdu extension
Initializing nautilus-open-terminal extension
nautilus-wipe-Message: Initializing
** (nautilus:13802): CRITICAL **: nautilus_menu_provider_get_background_items:
assertion `NAUTILUS_IS_MENU_PROVIDER (provider)' failed
** (nautilus:13802): CRITICAL **: nautilus_menu_provider_get_background_items:
assertion `NAUTILUS_IS_MENU_PROVIDER (provider)' failed

... and nautilus starts.

Ctrl-Z also now works.

^C^C^C^Z
[1]+ Stopped nautilus
root@blackbox ~
 fg
nautilus
... of course, nautilus still keeps running, even when I exit nautilus using
Alt-F4. I have to use a second terminal to kill it.

What I've tried according to other posts

- Reinstalling nautilus
- Looking at permissions for the binary.

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

I would say that this is a long way from Low Importance. As a desktop
user I hit this bug dozens of times per day, and over time this is
incredibly frustrating to the point of having installed several
alternatives, and even considering dropping Unity/Gnome in favor of KDE
(or something sane).

[Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-04-28 Thread Alfredo Maldonado Guerra
I have just installed the release version of Raring Ringtail 13.04 and I
can reproduce this bug! Quite shocked to experience it becuase I'm
running the RELEASE version.

I'm sorry but I just don't buy the whole Canonical has limited
resources and there's lots to do attitude. Are you playing at beaing
a serious company or are you really a serious company? You ask people
for donations and shove people those Amazon and other commercial
apps/ads and activity is recorded by default (forcing people to opt out
rather than in).

There's a clear difference between providing a college
project/community project product vs a professional product. From a
college/community project you expect this kind of bugs and issues, but
not from a professional product. And don't tell me that the free price
tag is an excuse, because there are other FREE professional products out
there that behave like professional products (no bugs or few bugs) and
meet their users needs. Google search and email is an example. And yes,
they do shove annoying ads at your face and they track your activities
online, etc. You can complain all you want about that, but the fact
remains that the Google product in terms of functionality is flawless.
With Ubuntu on the other hand, it looks like we're getting the annoyance
from the ads, lack of privacy via activity tracking and yet we have to
put up with college-grade product.

Yes, there are other distros that will have this bug, but at least those
distros are real community projects that do not pretend to be a
commercial product. From a user point of view, it is very tempting to go
to one of those distros knowing that at least my privacy will be
respected.

Please do yourselves a favour and listen to your users' feedback if you
want your product to survive and mature. You can do it. After all, as
you said it yourself, Cannonical is not a charity. So don't behave
like one and please provide a PROFESSIONAL product.

As a final point, I'd like to mention that I really like Unity and I
think it's maturing quite well. It really makes Ubuntu be a real
contender to other commercial OS like Apple and Windows. However, this
is no excuse for not fixing basic functionality like copying files over
a network.

[Bug 1043007] [NEW] Editing Bookmarks overwrites what I type in - this is bad.

2012-08-28 Thread alfredo
Public bug reported:

When I try to edit my bookmarks in Nautilus, the Nautilus code
continually overwrites the Name, even when I am trying to enter my own
name.

Whoever wrote this dialog, tried to be too d*mned smart, without testing
it properly, or getting feedback from users.

I have several bookmarks whose last subdirectory is, for example,
Documentation.

/media/ENKRYPTED_1/homer/engineering/src/Documentation
/nfs/box/backups/homer/engineering/src/Documentation
smb://192.168.21.115/c$/mosaic/Documentation

The d*ng that wrote this dialog thought that every bookmark should be
called Documentation.

Please don't discard or mess with what people are trying to do -- you're
just upsetting us.

When I try to edit Name, very often it trashes what I'm entering,
replacing it with Documentation.

[Bug 668995] [NEW] In Icon view, especially 400%, there is too much whitespace

2010-10-31 Thread alfredo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Especially at 400% icon view, there is so much whitespace that it looks
a little ridiculous.

Please refer to attached screenshot of my laptop's 1280x800 display.
There's room to two images side-by-side at 400%, and probably 4 images
side-by-side at 200%.

Is is possible that the whitespace around the icon was mistakenly
included in the percentage zoom calculation?

[Bug 582613] Re: nautilus shouldn't colour icons - especially when the icons are photos

2010-10-31 Thread alfredo
Sebastien wrote nobody is viewing photos in thumbnail mode anyway.

Wrong.

When somebody writes nobody does..., he/she means *he/she* does not.

I use icon view all the time for managing and moving photos to
appropriate folders, etc.

Nautilus is still the best app for managing all these folders and files.

One working folder I on my server has 130 subfolders, with 1932 photos
totalling 7.4GB, and that's just one of several projects.

And yes, the photos have to be in subfolders because other people using
Windows do no have access to things like my local F-Spot cache which
manages photos by categorising them which is really only a user app, and
which is not suitable for office-wide working (read Linux+lots of
Windows+even a Mac).

As for image *viewing*, yes, I double-click all the time on photos, to
bring up a viewer, but that cannot manage files as well as Nautilus.

2010-10-17 Thread Alfredo Gemma
Tushar,

In that forum they just suggest to set the http_proxy variable in the
classical fashion:

export http_proxy=http://login:passw...@proxy:port

Although exporting the http_proxy variable can be useful in some
occasion (i.e. with software not supporting explicitly proxies), in this
case can not be considered a solution and however, It is proven not to
work.

Thank you anyway for your feedback.

[Bug 658445] Re: Ubuntu 10.10: proxy settings are not detected in some applications like empathy or update-manager

2010-10-13 Thread Alfredo Gemma
Thank you for your feedback, jeannich.

However, I think that the problem is more general and related to the
upgrade process on O.S. with a lot of packages installed.

I upgraded from 9.04 and 10,04 15 computers in total (13 Desktops and 2
Servers)

The upgrade process was successful on 9 computers while on the remaining
6 (5 desktops and 1 Servers with a LAMP stack using Lighttpd) I detected
problems related to the ScreeSaver package (unlock the screen was not
possible), security problems (every attemp to process a php page caused
a 403 error), proxy detection problems similar to the reported one.

In this scenario the only possible hypothesis is that in presence of
complex configuration, the actual upgrade corrupts some settings after
updating the packages.

[Bug 582613] [NEW] nautilus shouldn't colour icons - especially when the icons are photos

2010-05-18 Thread alfredo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

This is a nuisance if using nautilus as a photo-sorter, etc. The
picture goes orange, see attached screenshot.

The screenshot shows one of pair of similar photos, but the highlighted
one just looks crummy.

Some other way of highlighting the current selection should be made,
e.g., a coloured BORDER, not the icon itself.

Note that the text (filename) already has a coloured background.

[Bug 580882] [NEW] favorite status message feature is not documented

2010-05-15 Thread Alfredo Pironti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Use case: I am a user with some knowledge of IM, but facing empathy for
the first time, and I don't know what a favorite status is for. (How
can I use it? are my favourite statuses stored somewhere? Will other
people see my favorite statuses in a special way? and so on). However,
there is no documentation about this feature in the help of empathy.
This feature should be documented.

If I knew what a favorite status message was for, I would have provided
a patch with the requested documentation ;-)

Cheers

[Bug 580882] Re: favorite status message feature is not documented

2010-05-15 Thread Alfredo Pironti
Sorry for being incomplete. When I choose a custom status, a greyed-out
star appears close to it. A tool-tip says Click to make this status a
favorite. By experimenting (clicking on the star) I discovered that a
starred custom status gets put among the selectable statuses. If I un-
start that status, it disappears from the ready-made statuses.

However, *before* clicking the star, it was not clear to me what a
favourite status was for (maybe it will look bold to my friends?, or
what?), so I searched into the empathy documentation, and found nothing
about it. As a wishlist, it would be nice if the documentation could
improved by adding a paragraph about the favourite statuses, saying
something like:

With favourite statuses, you can save the custom statuses you use the most, so
that you can easily retrieve them later. In order to add a favourite status,
first set a custom status. Then, click on the greyed star that appears close to
it. The status is now a favourite status, meaning it will appear in the list
of the custom statuses you can choose from.

If you want to delete a favourite status, select it so that it becomes your
current status. Then, click on the star, so that it becomes grayed. The status
is now delete from the list.

Or, maybe, the tool-tip could be changed to something like Click to
make this status available in the status list. That is: it was not
clear to me that a favourite status is a status I use often. At first,
the word favourite and the star remembered me of the voting system you
use in rhythmbox to order your favourite songs (which is *not* the case
here :-) )

Thank you for your support.

[Bug 367169] Re: GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; durring ssh X11 forwarding

2010-04-20 Thread Alfredo Pironti
I was affected by this bug, and I can confirm that on the remote machine
the ~/.dbus directory was owned by root. By changing the owner to
myself the problem is solved.

For some reason some people got the ~/.dbus ownership unwillingly
changed, can't tell in which package, but this is certainly a bug. The
remote machine started as a 9.04 and was upgraded to 9.10. For you
interest, the local machine (which has correct permissions by default)
started as a 8.04 and was upgraded to 9.10. Maybe 9.04 was shipped with
this error?

2009-12-17 Thread Alfredo Pironti
Please, when this bug is fixed, also provide a way to revert the user
made workarounds.

For example, when fixing the bug, a pop-up window may say: If you
disabled compiz because of the flash bug, you can now safely re-enable
it. Or, for workaround 3, the package installer may silently modify the
nspluginwrapper configuration file to remove the export

I buy your point. Nevertheless, at least the users should be notified
when the problem will be solved (not only by marking this bug as
solved), so that they can revert their workarounds. Otherwise it is very
likely that the fix will go unnoticed and many workarounds will remain
in place unwillingly... possibly enabling new malfunctionings hard to
debug later.

[Bug 465464] Re: Gnome panels continuously crash, then reload

2009-11-04 Thread Alfredo Pironti
Actually, I can reproduce this bug even after I deleted my old
configuration (that is, when the default configuration is in place).

Steps to reproduce the bug on my system:
1) rm -r ~/.gconf/apps/panel/ # restore default configuration
2) killall gconfd-2 # make sure the new configuration is read
3) Then start gnome-panel; everything is fine.
4) Remove the notification area applet; the panel crashes, then reloads and
crashes continuously, until you do steps 1) and 2) again

Shall I open a new bug for this? Thank you for your very prompt support.

The relevant section of .xsessions-error follows:

The program 'gnome-panel' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 3389 error_code 8 request_code 1 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I started having this bug by just removing the notification area. After
notification area was removed, gnome-panel started crashing, and now it
crashes every time it starts up.

Attached please find my .xsession-errors.

Please note that this bug is currently making my system completely
unusable (from the GUI). Also, the workaround of killing gconf2-d is not
working at all for me.

Please, any hint for me to work around it, while we find a proper fix?
Any way to restore the notification area from the command line? Your
help is greatly appreciated...

[Bug 465464] Re: Gnome panels continuously crash, then reload

2009-11-03 Thread Alfredo Pironti
I do have a dual screen config, but accessibility options are not
enabled anywhere.

As a work around, I just deleted everything under ~/.gconf/apps/panel/,
then restarder gconf2-d. That solved the problem by restoring the
panel to the pristine default condition. Accidentaly, this also solved
the bug of the NetworkManager icon not displaying in the notification
area. I have been constantly upgrading my Ubuntu distro since 6.06,
never deleting anything from my home, so I guess that was mostly a
legacy-configuration issue.

Very sorry I didn't make a backup of the ~/.gconf/apps/panel directory
for debugging purposes, instead of deleting it (from the shell, so no
restore or undo available afaik).

If I can provide further help, I will be glad to.

2009-05-14 Thread Alfredo Cardenas
Hi Sorry for taking so long to respond. This is always reproducible. Here
are the steps:

1. Set up evolution for exchange (I am using hosted exchange at
mail.navisite.com)
2. Enter all of my credential information
3. Once my folders come up, right click the ones I want to download for
offline usage (I am using a laptop)
4. wait for all of my mail to download
5. click on contacts (I can see all of my personal contacts here)
6. right click my folder and go to properties
7. select any combination of check boxes and press OK.
8. i see the error.
Note: I tried moving aside the .evolution folder and re downloading all of
my mail and get the same error

I use an outlook personal address book, is this the answer you are looking
for?

Thanks,
Alfredo

2008-10-27 Thread Alfredo Matos
I have a search folder called 'Unread' with a single rule: status if not
read for all Local and Active Remote Folders.

This doesn't work either. So I'm not sure to which use case you are
referring, since nothing workings.

I have the same problem with the Ubuntu 7.10 using the Terminal Emulator

occurred without any evident reason. I tried to re-install the software

[Bug 72346] Re: System unusable when internet connection down and domain name set

Thanks to the people over at GoT, I've finally discovered where the
problem lies.

Open /etc/hosts and add your hostname to 127.0.0.1 localhost, which
should solve that annoying DNS issue. I think Ubuntu should
automatically do this?

[Bug 72346] Re: System unusable when internet connection down and domain name set

I have the exact same problem, unplugging the network cable with a
domain name set slows the system down. Running strace gives me the
following log for gnome-terminal.

 0.22 write(10,

As you can see, it takes over 40 seconds, but I have no idea what's
happening at that moment. Anything else I should provide you with?

Ditto. Just tried to run sound-juicer first time this afternoon.
Dialogs have a focus on the previous dialog. If you close the previous
dialog, you can edit the profile, but then the profile is not visible,
and you can't select the profile it later on.

I installed the gstreamer lame plugin as requested, but problem remains
as indicated above.
