[Bug 1817620] Re: High cpu usage on alt-tab-ing
OK, removed. Just found it weird that both issues disappered by restarting `gnome-shell`, so assumed they were related by some root cause. Thank you. ** Description changed: Switching between apps was feeling extremely laggy and unsmooth after some days of keeping the laptop on and just alt-tab-ing between apps would keep the cpu consistently at 100% when hitting it more than 8-9 times per second and *not* letting go of Alt (meaning I stay at the same app). - - Also, just whizzing the mouse around on the screen (not moving anything) - would keep the cpu at 40-50%. Some investigation (1) led me to try out restarting the gnome-shell instance (killall followed by manually starting it in the terminal), upon which everything seemed zippy again. No lagginess. The restart was a supposed fix for a memory leak bug (2), but according to the comments a bug fix was supposed to have landed in 18.04 long ago. So either this has not been fixed or this bug is about something else - probably the latter, as the reported memory usage in htop was nowhere near the gigabytes of memory reported in the bug issue for 16722297. Another thing worth mentioning perhaps, based on comments in (3) found through (4), is that I have disabled all extensions. I used to use the Coverflow extension. Expected behaviour: There should be no percieved lag or stuttering in the interface when switching between applications. Actual behaviour: Switching between applications causes a noticable lag/stuttering when the computer has been running for an extended period of time (weeks, but where it has mostly been suspended, meaning actual usage is limited to 3-4 days). - 1. https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2018/03/gnome-shell-has-a-memory-leak-and-it-might-not-be-fixed-for-ubuntu-18-04-lts 2. https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-shell/+bug/1672297 3. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1773959 4. https://askubuntu.com/a/1090987/165026 System info: Running Wayland. [Bug 1817620] Re: High cpu usage on alt-tab-ing
Thanks for the reply. I'll run Apport as soon as I can access the machine again. Regarding the actual issue, I don't think it is as cut and dry as this being just about rendering alone, as that would imply that the rendering performance was consistently bad. As I wrote, the performance seems fine on a fresh boot and also after restarting gnome-session (once the bug has appeared), which would not be the case if this was down to just rendering. Some kind of memory issue (leak, fragmentation, ...) seems to play a part in order to explain the time component. Also, there is no window preview (which I assume is a small boxed window preview when Alt-Tab-ing) when I have disabled the Coverflow plugin, yet the stuttering performance was very much present. When it comes to testing out the issue with 19.04, you'll have to bear with me, as this issue takes some time to materialize :-) I have not been able to reproduce it in a short time. Are there any debugging tools I can employ to gain some insight/stats/vitals if/when I encounter this issue? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1817620 Title: High cpu usage on alt-tab-ing To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1817620/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1038972] Re: gnome-shell dead-locks when asking for ssh-passwd using sshfs.
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected xenial ** Description changed: I can reliably get gnome-shell to dead-lock while using gmusicbrowser with all the music on an sshfs mounted filesystem. Steps to reproduce. Computer A is the desktop, B is the remote server that hosts the filesystem. 1. On A, mount the remote filesystem on B with sshfs with the option '-o reconnect'. This will trigger ssh-askpass later. 2. On A, start gmusicbrowser and set the library to the mounted sshfs filesystem. 3. Play a song and pause it. 4. Remove focus from gmusicbrowser, for instance but putting it on another workspace. 5. Reboot B. 6. Wait for B to come up. 7. On A, switch to the workspace with gmusicbrowser and the first click you do, click the settings gear to get the floating window. 8. Enjoy your dead-lock When gmusicbrowser gets focus it first opens a floating menu, but also it triggers a reconnect to the sshfs filesystem since it has a mp3 file open, and this starts ssh-askpass, which opens a dialog to get your password, but it cannot get complete focus because of the floating meny and now displays an alert "cannot get complete focus, maybe someone is eavesdropping", which cannot be clicked because it can't get focused. Gnome-shell is completely deadlocked, mouse still moves, but nothing can get focus, hot corners does nothing, typing does nothing. Killing gmusicbrowser does nothing, killing gnome-shell restarts it into the same dead-locked state. The kernel complains that gmusicbrowser is hung for over 120s. Xkill can't grab the mouse is says. - You can get out the dead-lock by using 'pkill ssh-askpass' for another - vt, but that took me a long time to figure out. + You can get out the dead-lock by using 'pkill ssh-askpass' for another vt, but that took me a long time to figure out. + --- + ApportVersion: 2.20.1-0ubuntu2.5 + Architecture: amd64 + CurrentDesktop: GNOME + DisplayManager: lightdm + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 16.04 + InstallationDate: Installed on 2012-03-13 (1890 days ago) + InstallationMedia: Ubuntu-Server 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot" - Release amd64 (20111011) + Package: gnome-shell 3.18.5-0ubuntu0.2 + PackageArchitecture: amd64 + ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.4.0-71.92-generic 4.4.49 + Tags: xenial + Uname: Linux 4.4.0-71-generic x86_64 + UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) + UserGroups: adm admin cdrom dialout docker lpadmin netdev plugdev sambashare scratch + _MarkForUpload: True ** Attachment added: "Dependencies.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1038972/+attachment/4878211/+files/Dependencies.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1038972 Title: gnome-shell dead-locks when asking for ssh-passwd using sshfs. [Bug 775117] Re: Thunar hangs on first launch of each session
lvscar came across the same solution I just found in the Arch forums: Solving problem with slow cold start: Some people still have problems with Thunar taking a long time to start for the first time. This is due to gvfs checking the network and Thunar won't show up before gvfs finishes. [Bug 837196] Re: Cannot change bluetooth name
Also, in that upstream bug the gnome dev seems to think a Bluetooth name must always be the same as the system's hostname. (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=658154, "No, and we're not interested in supporting that.") Ignoring for a moment the condescending attitude that is infesting Gnome nowadays, I have a usecase that seems to require being able to change the bluetooth name (unless I overlooked something, feel free to correct me). I have two different Ubuntu installations on the same laptop, one for work, one for private use. They have different names. In earlier versions of Ubuntu I tried just connecting to both with different names via bluetooth, which didn't work. [Bug 653623] Re: gvfs-gphoto2 eating 100% CPU and no I/O operations
This is not only 100% CPU usage, it is also a memory problem. It looks like the copy operation wants to acquire the whole file in memory during the copy. This is not a serous problem for normal pictures under 20MB, but I just gave up copying a 2GB MOV file from a Canon 7D to Ubuntus 10.04 using USB cable. The following path was shown in Nautilus: gphoto2://[usb:001,006]/DCIM/100EOS7D Related to this bug is that the limitation in when to show preview. When you disable preview for files over 50MB, this setting is ignores for files on the digi cam. This is a problem because the transfer rate is not fast, it takes 100% CPU and takes just as much memory as the size of the file processed for preview. Re: [Bug 584428] Re: Lucid server upgrade login times out

[Bug 13983] Re: Evolution virtual trash / "real" trash on IMAP server
It is possible that I have misunderstood how Evu works, but one thing is for certain, you misunderstood the main point and I will tell this from a more practical point of view, something reproductive. If anyone wants to try it out, I will gladly open an email account just for the research, if we kan find some way of getting in direct contact with each other, like cfriisha at jabber dot org. Main point: After deleting mail in a sub folder, this mail appears in the Evu. Trash folder and not in the server side Trash folder. Behavior: Of all the mail clients I have used, only Evu. does deletion tis way. Reproduction scenario: IMAP server = courier on Ubuntu 9.04 IMAP client = Evolution 2.28.1 on Ubuntu 9.10 IMAP account = INBOX, INBOX.Drafts, INBOX.Sent, INBOX.Trash, INBOX.friends There are a lot more folders on the actual account, but the first four are the standard ones and then I included one of my extra folders. The steps: I receive a mail in my INBOX from f...@example.com which I read, close and drag to the INBOX.friends folder. Later I highlight the email from f...@example.com in the INBOX.friends and hit the Del key. The actual result: f...@example.com does not appear in INBOX.Trash but rather in Trash. My problem with this is that the folder Trash is not anywhere to find on the server, which suggests to me that Trash is a local folder. If I want to undelete f...@example.com I will have to do it from that particular Evu. client. The expected result: (As with any other client I have ever tried) f...@example.com appear in INBOX.Trash. and I can later recover that email from any client, anywhere, at any time. Why the difference: >From what I see Sebastien and Paul write, it appears that Evu. really does >mark the mail on the server as deleted, so could it be that things doesn't >work for me and the OP because of strange behavior of the Courier IMAP server, >which I would have thought was a rather common server? -- Evolution virtual trash / "real" trash on IMAP server https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/13983 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
