[Bug 1987209] Re: gnome-shell (Wayland) crashes with SIGSEGV when screen locker activates (jj), immediately after meta_workspace_get_work_area_for_monitor: assertion 'logical_monitor != NULL' failed

2023-09-06 Thread Carl Martin MIkael Randau
I have this issue on Ubuntu 23.10. Lock screen works only with an
external monitor connected. Otherwise the session is ended and the user
is logged out and brought to the gdm screen. Let me know what logs you
need.

[Bug 2003976] [NEW] 22.04.1 LTS is incredably SLOW!

2023-01-26 Thread Carl E. Kohn
Public bug reported:

I have been happily using at least the last 10 releases of Ubuntu. I am
careful to upgrade to LTS versions.

I upgraded to 22.04 a few weeks ago and have failed in researching the
web for a solution. My system has lots of memory and disk and the CPU
is not busy. I have not been able to locate the bottleneck, I wish I
had a tool that would show where the CPU is idling.

Surely there is an easy fix!

Thanks,

Carl

[Bug 1817620] Re: High cpu usage on alt-tab-ing

2019-02-28 Thread Carl-Erik Kopseng
OK, removed. Just found it weird that both issues disappered by
restarting `gnome-shell`, so assumed they were related by some root
cause. Thank you.

** Description changed:

Switching between apps was feeling extremely laggy and unsmooth after
some days of keeping the laptop on and just alt-tab-ing between apps
would keep the cpu consistently at 100% when hitting it more than 8-9
times per second and *not* letting go of Alt (meaning I stay at the same
  app).
-
- Also, just whizzing the mouse around on the screen (not moving anything)
- would keep the cpu at 40-50%.

Some investigation (1) led me to try out restarting the gnome-shell
instance (killall followed by manually starting it in the terminal),
upon which everything seemed zippy again. No lagginess. The restart was
a supposed fix for a memory leak bug (2), but according to the comments
a bug fix was supposed to have landed in 18.04 long ago. So either this
has not been fixed or this bug is about something else - probably the
latter, as the reported memory usage in htop was nowhere near the
gigabytes of memory reported in the bug issue for 16722297.

Another thing worth mentioning perhaps, based on comments in (3) found
through (4), is that I have disabled all extensions. I used to use the
  Coverflow extension.

  Expected behaviour:
There should be no percieved lag or stuttering in the interface when
switching between applications.

  Actual behaviour:
Switching between applications causes a noticable lag/stuttering when the
computer has been running for an extended period of time (weeks, but where it
has mostly been suspended, meaning actual usage is limited to 3-4 days).

[Bug 1817620] Re: High cpu usage on alt-tab-ing

2019-02-27 Thread Carl-Erik Kopseng
Thanks for the reply. I'll run Apport as soon as I can access the
machine again.

Regarding the actual issue, I don't think it is as cut and dry as this
being just about rendering alone, as that would imply that the rendering
performance was consistently bad. As I wrote, the performance seems fine
on a fresh boot and also after restarting gnome-session (once the bug
has appeared), which would not be the case if this was down to just
rendering. Some kind of memory issue (leak, fragmentation, ...) seems to
play a part in order to explain the time component.

Also, there is no window preview (which I assume is a small boxed window
preview when Alt-Tab-ing) when I have disabled the Coverflow plugin, yet
the stuttering performance was very much present.

When it comes to testing out the issue with 19.04, you'll have to bear
with me, as this issue takes some time to materialize :-) I have not
been able to reproduce it in a short time.

Are there any debugging tools I can employ to gain some
insight/stats/vitals if/when I encounter this issue?

[Bug 1280300] Re: Desktop contents displayed on resume, before lock screen is shown

2018-11-01 Thread Carl-Erik Kopseng
I'd imagine a workaround could be to have a hook for suspend write to
the framebuffer, but I failed at getting this working when I tried today
(put a script in /usr/lib/systemd/system-sleep to invoke eog in
fullscreen).

Regarding the comment above about this being fixed in "certified"
laptops, this doesn't seem to be 100% correct. See this on a Dell XPS
9350, and this machine was available in a "Developer edition" running
Ubuntu. Still see this issue.

[Bug 1727742] Re: "peek" hangs gnome-shell Wayland sessions (but not Xorg)

2018-08-06 Thread Carl-Erik Kopseng
I installed Peek using Snap and due to all the problems using Snap, the author
of Peek recently pulled support for Snap packages. So the fix to this is
1. Don't use Wayland
2. Use non-snap packages, for instance Flatpak.

[Bug 1762952] Re: Alternative shortcut for layout switching Alt+Shift unexpectedly set by default

2018-04-24 Thread Carl-Erik Kopseng
By the way, the real, underlying problem is of course that overlapping
shortcuts should be possible (like in Mac and Windows), which is caused
by this XKB bug reported 14 years ago (and still active):
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=865

It is basically about activating shortcuts on keypress vs key release.

[Bug 1762952] Re: Alternative shortcut for layout switching Alt+Shift unexpectedly set by default

2018-04-24 Thread Carl-Erik Kopseng
Just wanted to chime in on the upgrade path problem. I also upgraded
from Ubuntu 17.10 and I also never set this shortcut anywhere. I have
always used Super+Space and I have never used the Gnome Tweaks tool
before. Using it to disable the shortcut fixed all the issues and the
shortcuts using Shift - regardless of program - now work.

This seems to point to this being some kind of upgrade issue.

[Bug 1764642] [NEW] Shift-Alt-Tab stopped working in 18.04

2018-04-16 Thread Carl-Erik Kopseng
Public bug reported:

I already asked question #665667 in March about this, and it was
concluded this was a bug I should report. That pressing Shift while
pressing Alt-Tab does not reverse the direction is still an issue. Using
Shift as a modifier used to work in previous Ubuntu versions, and also
still works when using Super+Tab.

[Bug 1038972] Re: gnome-shell dead-locks when asking for ssh-passwd using sshfs.

2017-05-17 Thread Carl-Johan Kjellander
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected xenial

** Description changed:

I can reliably get gnome-shell to dead-lock while using gmusicbrowser
with all the music on an sshfs mounted filesystem.

  Steps to reproduce.
Computer A is the desktop, B is the remote server that hosts the filesystem.

  1. On A, mount the remote filesystem on B with sshfs with the option '-o
reconnect'. This will trigger ssh-askpass later.
  2. On A, start gmusicbrowser and set the library to the mounted sshfs
filesystem.
  3. Play a song and pause it.
  4. Remove focus from gmusicbrowser, for instance but putting it on another
workspace.
  5. Reboot B.
  6. Wait for B to come up.
  7. On A, switch to the workspace with gmusicbrowser and the first click you
do, click the settings gear to get the floating window.

  8. Enjoy your dead-lock

When gmusicbrowser gets focus it first opens a floating menu, but also
it triggers a reconnect to the sshfs filesystem since it has a mp3 file
open, and this starts ssh-askpass, which opens a dialog to get your
password, but it cannot get complete focus because of the floating meny
and now displays an alert "cannot get complete focus, maybe someone is
eavesdropping", which cannot be clicked because it can't get focused.

Gnome-shell is completely deadlocked, mouse still moves, but nothing can get
focus, hot corners does nothing, typing does nothing. Killing gmusicbrowser
does nothing, killing gnome-shell restarts it into the same dead-locked state.
The kernel complains that gmusicbrowser is hung for over 120s. Xkill can't
grab the mouse is says.

- You can get out the dead-lock by using 'pkill ssh-askpass' for another
- vt, but that took me a long time to figure out.

[Bug 25977] Re: places menu should include the trash as a place

2015-05-20 Thread Carl Ponder
Personally, my bottom panel is full of more important things like the
workplace-switcher.
I don't interact with my trash bin very often, but that makes it all the more
frustrating that it's not in any obvious place.
The "places" menu is exactly where it belongs, since it's implemented as a
special folder.

[Bug 775117] Re: Thunar hangs on first launch of each session

2012-08-22 Thread Carl Stephenson
lvscar came across the same solution I just found in the Arch forums:

Solving problem with slow cold start:
Some people still have problems with Thunar taking a long time to start for the
first time. This is due to gvfs checking the network and Thunar won't show up
before gvfs finishes. To change this behaviour, edit
/usr/share/gvfs/mounts/network.mount and change AutoMount=true to
AutoMount=false.

Nice to solve this, it was irritating!

[Bug 981773] Re: Secondary screen always rotated 90 degrees clock- or counterclockwise

2012-04-26 Thread Carl Jenkins
Just installed Release 12.04 (precise) 32-bit on Toshiba Netbook NB255.
When I plugged in my Samsung external monitor 1440x900 display. Changing
the resolution doesn't change anything. Only have clockwise or counter

[Bug 837196] Re: Cannot change bluetooth name

2012-03-27 Thread Carl-Eric Menzel
Also, in that upstream bug the gnome dev seems to think a Bluetooth name
must always be the same as the system's hostname.
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=658154, "No, and we're not
interested in supporting that.")

Ignoring for a moment the condescending attitude that is infesting Gnome
nowadays, I have a usecase that seems to require being able to change
the bluetooth name (unless I overlooked something, feel free to correct
me). I have two different Ubuntu installations on the same laptop, one
for work, one for private use. They have different names. In earlier
versions of Ubuntu I tried just connecting to both with different names
via bluetooth, which didn't work. Changing the bluetooth names to be
identical on both installations seemed to (mostly) work. It seems that
this would no longer be supported.

[Bug 792451] [NEW] "laptop lid closed" action missing

2011-06-03 Thread Carl Karsten
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I need my laptop to keep running apps when the lid is closed. The

[Bug 753966] [NEW] gnome-display-properties needs a newer version oflibgnome-desktop-2.so.17

2011-04-07 Thread Carl A Joslin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I ran gnome-display-properties and got the following error
gnome-display-properties: symbol lookup error: gnome-display-properties:
undefined symbol: gnome_rr_labeler_show

Upgrading libgnome-desktop-2-17 fixed the problem
Preparing to replace libgnome-desktop-2-17 1:2.32.0-0ubuntu1 (using
.../libgnome-desktop-2-17_1%3a2.32.1-0ubuntu5_i386.deb)

It would seem the the depends of gnome-control-center are wrong.

[Bug 653623] Re: gvfs-gphoto2 eating 100% CPU and no I/O operations

2011-01-25 Thread Carl Friis-Hansen
This is not only 100% CPU usage, it is also a memory problem. It looks like the
copy operation wants to acquire the whole file in memory during the copy. This
is not a serous problem for normal pictures under 20MB, but I just gave up
copying a 2GB MOV file from a Canon 7D to Ubuntus 10.04 using USB cable. The
following path was shown in Nautilus:
gphoto2://[usb:001,006]/DCIM/100EOS7D

Related to this bug is that the limitation in when to show preview. When
you disable preview for files over 50MB, this setting is ignores for
files on the digi cam. This is a problem because the transfer rate is
not fast, it takes 100% CPU and takes just as much memory as the size of
the file processed for preview. The only way I found to avoid this, is
to disable preview of other media altogether.

Workaround appears to be to take out the CF anf stuff it directly into
the computer.

[Bug 707108] [NEW] Brasero can not copy some video DVDs

2011-01-24 Thread Carl Mäkinen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

I'm trying to transfer a video DVD to an ISO file in order to view it on
my media center PC. Brasero can do this for all six discs i have tried
except one - the "Bröloppsfotografen" DVD that contains < and >
characters in the disc title. The DVD plays in Totem Movie Player
2.32.0.

* Steps to reproduce:
1) Insert video DVD disc "Bröloppsfotografen" with disc name
"" (see DVD disc properties.png)
2) Start Brasero with console command "brasero --brasero-media-debug >
media-debug.txt"
3) Select Disc copy

* Expected behaviour
I expect the dialogue that appears to contain my DVD-disc like in
"Expected.png" attachment.

* Observed behaviour
The list is empty (see "Observed.png") and this error message appears in the
console, but *not* in the media-debug.txt file:

(brasero:4573): Gtk-WARNING **: Failed to set text from markup due to
error parsing markup: Unknown tag 'BROLLOPSFOTOGRAFEN' on line 1 char 29

[Bug 552920] Re: Moving diagonally from narrow menu title often opens adjacent menu

2010-12-14 Thread Carl Simpson
It might be worth considering (if it's even possible) only having a
timer on menu opening if the mouse is actually moving diagonally. That
way might keep the responsive feel when moving from menu to menu whilst
stopping the reported behaviour.

[Bug 658190] [NEW] Disc number cannot be changed en mass.

2010-10-11 Thread Carl Simpson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Release version: Ubuntu 10.10

Package version: Rhythmbox 0.13.1-0ubuntu5

It has been the case for me that I sometimes need to change the disc
number (by adding it at all, mostly) for various tracks, whether because
they have lost metadata in conversion, arrived without it, or been
corrupted, etc. This hasn't happened often, to be fair.

Expected: I can highlight the offending tracks, right click, select
"properties" and give them all a disc number.

What happens: If you have multiple tracks selected, disc number is not
present in the properties dialogue. Instead you must go through them
one by one, by one, by one, by one…

A minor annoyance at best.

Re: [Bug 584428] Re: Lucid server upgrade login times out

2010-05-25 Thread Carl Nobile
I had found mention of gdm being a related issues, but it wasn't
running on my server which I would expect because it's a server.

I am also running samba so I edited the file you mentioned and added the
auth methods = guest sam winbind
line to the [global] settings. However, I'm not physically near the
machine now so I can't test it at a VT until I get there.

Thanks, I hope this fixes the issue, but it seems we still have a bug
here and this is only a work around.

I wonder if this could also be causing another issue I am having. I am
running automount for my NFS mounts. When I log out then back in I
cannot get to the mounts any more. I need to run
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure portmap
$ sudo service portmap restart
to get them working again. Restarting alone doesn't fix it.

Should I enter another bug for this?

[Bug 584428] Re: Lucid server upgrade login times out

2010-05-23 Thread Carl Nobile
An additional issue I have found is that often when I need to use sudo
the screen locks up immediately after I type in my password. On occasion
it will time out, but most times I need to log in again and kill the
session.

[Bug 151576] Re: setting XDG_DESKTOP_DIR automaticallyto the user dir when Desktop is not available confuses users

2010-04-15 Thread Carl-Erik Kopseng
This is still a problem in Ubuntu 10.04 (beta)! Just luck brought me
here to find the solution with the .config directory. I think one should
be presented with a dialog on the next login where one has the
possibility of restoring the desktop folder entry (and settings) with a
checkbox to not show again. That would save users in use cases as mine.

[Bug 505491] [NEW] Feature request: Middle button should close chat tab in Empathy

2010-01-10 Thread Carl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

I think that it would be nice to be able to close a chat tab by clicking
it with the middle mouse button. This is how most web browsers (Firefox,
Chrome and IE) handle middle button clicks on a tab.

A middle mouse button click does not do any thing today.

[Bug 495952] [NEW] Unable to connect to Ubuntu One

2009-12-12 Thread Carl Michael Giblhauser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Fresh installation of karmic (using wubi installer). I was able to
connect, and upload/download a file, using mozilla firefox. But when I
use "Places -> Ubuntu One" I get a error message, telling me that there
is a "Capabilities mismatch", surmising I installed a "newer version of
the client". This is a brand new installation, plain vanilla. After
installing the latest updates yesterday, the system didn't boot any
more. I just got a "kernel panic" (unable to sync). So I reinstalled the
whole system. So I could' belief that I have a "newer version of the
client", it simply doesn't work.

This *is* a bit better than my first attempt, back then it didn't even
finish the initial configuration. Now I can at least use Firefox to
(somehow) use Ubuntu One.

Sincerely
C. M. Giblhauser

[Bug 13983] Re: Evolution virtual trash / "real" trash on IMAP server

2009-12-01 Thread Carl Friis-Hansen
A note about the directory structure.
As you can see on the picture, the INBOX.Trash is not iconized as trash, but is
actually showing the contents of the trash folder on the server. The Trash
folder on the other hand, is icinized as trash, but is outside the structure of
the INBOX and is not represented on the server and is the folder where Evu.
presents the deleted mail.

Delete in non Evu. client:
INBOX.friends --->  INBOX.Trash

Delete in Evu. client:
INBOX.friends --->  local-machine.Trash

[Bug 13983] Re: Evolution virtual trash / "real" trash on IMAP server

2009-12-01 Thread Carl Friis-Hansen
It is possible that I have misunderstood how Evu works, but one thing is
for certain, you misunderstood the main point and I will tell this from
a more practical point of view, something reproductive. If anyone wants
to try it out, I will gladly open an email account just for the
research, if we kan find some way of getting in direct contact with each
other, like cfriisha at jabber dot org.

Main point: After deleting mail in a sub folder, this mail appears in
the Evu. Trash folder and not in the server side Trash folder.

Behavior: Of all the mail clients I have used, only Evu. does deletion
tis way.

Reproduction scenario:
IMAP server = courier on Ubuntu 9.04
IMAP client = Evolution 2.28.1 on Ubuntu 9.10
IMAP account = INBOX, INBOX.Drafts, INBOX.Sent, INBOX.Trash, INBOX.friends

There are a lot more folders on the actual account, but the first four
are the standard ones and then I included one of my extra folders.

The steps:
I receive a mail in my INBOX from f...@example.com which I read, close and drag
to the INBOX.friends folder.
Later I highlight the email from f...@example.com in the INBOX.friends and hit
the Del key.

The actual result:
f...@example.com does not appear in INBOX.Trash but rather in Trash.

My problem with this is that the folder Trash is not anywhere to find on
the server, which suggests to me that Trash is a local folder. If I
want to undelete f...@example.com I will have to do it from that
particular Evu. client.

The expected result: (As with any other client I have ever tried)
f...@example.com appear in INBOX.Trash.

and I can later recover that email from any client, anywhere, at any
time.

Why the difference:
>From what I see Sebastien and Paul write, it appears that Evu. really does
>mark the mail on the server as deleted, so could it be that things doesn't
>work for me and the OP because of strange behavior of the Courier IMAP server,
>which I would have thought was a rather common server?

[Bug 490093] Re: Cannot change password with users-admin (gnome-system-tools)

2009-11-29 Thread Carl Davis
I can confirm this behavior. Below are more specific steps to reproduce
it.

1. Open Users and Groups
2. Select your user and choose properties
3. Click change password

After following through with the steps to change your password here the
/etc/shadow file shows the change

4. Click "OK" to close out of the "Account 'username' Properties" dialog
box.

After you authenticate with the dialog box that opens, your password
will revert to the original. The /etc/shadow file is rewritten with the
original hash.

NOTE: If you click "Cancel" instead of "OK" to leave the "Account
'username' Properties" dialog box the /etc/shadow file does not revert
to the original.
