[Bug 581991] [NEW] Notifications are suppressed when Totem is playing media
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem While Totem is playing media (audio or video), notifications are suppressed (tested using notify-send). As soon as Totem is paused, notifications work once again. This happens even if the player is not full-screen. I thought this might be due to a setting that disables notifications in case the user is trying to watch a video full-screen, but I could not find a setting for this in Totem's preferences or gconf. Other media players do not cause this issue. To reproduce: 1. Open a terminal and enter 'notify-send test', which produces a notification saying 'test' 2. Start playing a video or audio file with Totem 3. Try running 'notify-send test' again, which should not produce any notification 4. Pause Totem, then execute 'notify-send test' one more time, which should work This may be a GNOME-specific issue since a friend who tested this on KDE said he was unable to reproduce it. However, if that's the case I'm not sure what package is responsible. I'm using Lucid, fully up to date. [Bug 572099] [NEW] Visual Effects can be enabled without 'compiz' package installed
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center After much testing, it appears that the gnome-control-center does not look for whether or not the 'compiz' package is installed, instead looking to see if /usr/bin/compiz is installed (according to bug 559106), but that is provided by compiz-core, and although some effects can be used with compiz-core alone, many do not work properly without compiz installed. For example, looking at bug 561146, there are issues with metacity. I tested this on my machine by disabling effects, uninstalling just the 'compiz' package, then enabled Normal effects. A window showed that it was searching for drivers, but then it made the change and asked if I wanted to keep the settings. After selecting yes, I noticed that many of the effects still worked (animations, etc.) but I lost metacity on numerous windows. After installing the 'compiz' package, the problem was gone. Not sure if this is something that can be fixed within gnome-control- center (a way to check if the 'compiz' package is installed), or if something needs to be done on the compiz side. This is very similar to bug 159996, but that has been marked as having a Fix Released and this bug has either re-appeared, or overtime a loop- hole has been made. Please let me know if I need to clarify anything or provide extra information. [Bug 518873] Re: gnome-panel fails to start when desktop loads
@itsjustarumour There is one possibility I started to wonder about last night. This is admittedly a shot in the dark, but one of the changes in the gnome-panel Change Log for Ubuntu Lucid is some changes to prevent crashes due to Xrandr. I was just recently working on another report that ended up being due to Xinerama conflicting with Xrandr. It is difficult to say if this could possibly be happening on your system too, especially since Xinerama is used for dual displays, but could you attach your xorg.conf file to this report? That will show whether Xinerama is enabled on your system or not so we can see if that is possibly related in any way. Depending on what your xorg.conf file says, I have a few ideas on how we can approach this bug. [Bug 518873] Re: gnome-panel fails to start when desktop loads
Hm, that doesn't seem to be the issue at hand. Well, one thing you could try is installing the latest version of gnome-panel on your Karmic install and seeing if that resvolves the issue. If it does, then we will at least know for sure that it is the gnome-panel package that is the problem. If you're interested, you can get the .deb here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/gnome- panel_2.29.91-0ubuntu1_i386.deb . [Bug 523236] Re: Translation problem in Nautilus (French version): 21ère
@JF Thank you for your input. I do agree that the translation is not the best representation of what this bug is describing, which is why I left your initial description untouched. The translation is simply a means for developers and other bug triagers who may encounter similar reports to have an idea of what is going on, even if they do not speak French. I especially felt this may be necessary since a member of the Ubuntu French Translators team has determined that this is not a translation issue on their end. If I understand Alexandre correctly, then the issue is in the programming of Nautilus. It seems that Nautilus is setup to use -st, -nd, and -th after certain numbers. When translated, the -st, -nd, and -th endings are replaced by their counterparts in the set language. However, the settings for which ending goes with which numbers remains the same as in English. This results in the behavior that you have described. Since this is an issue with the programming of Nautilus, the bug has been filed upstream for the GNOME developers to look at. Along with the description that Alexandre provided in English on the upstream report, I thought it may help for the developers to be able to read an English translation of your description. While the translation is not perfect, it may help clarify the points that Alexandre made. [Bug 523236] Re: Translation problem in Nautilus (French version): 21ère
English translation of description using GT: Hello. I noticed a small problem with the French version of Gnome. I create a new folder: it's called New Folder. I make a copy by pressing Ctrl and dragging the icon directory: copy called new folder (copy). I still have a copy: it's called New Folder (another copy). I still have a copy: it's called New Folder (3rd copy). I still well up to 'new File (20th copy). I make a new copy, and here it gets interesting: it is called New Folder (21ère copy). 21ÈRE! I made a few hundred copies, each time the number ends in 11, I see 11th (in English: Eleventh → 11th), so that when the number ends with 1 but not by 11, I see 1st (in English: first → 1st). This is clearly a problem of translation English, using first where the French use first. As the first two copies are called copy and another copy, it could very well put the suffix e on all issues. -- Translation problem in Nautilus (French version): 21ère https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/523236 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 485352] Re: The Window List Applet in GNOME should offer a setting to permanently set an X number of rows
** Description changed: Binary package hint: gnome-panel - My window list applet style is usually on 2 rows when I have more than - 1 window opened. However, in some circumstances, the window list - applet fails to use its settings and its style changes to be only on 1 - row. See the attached screenshot window-list-applet-bug.png, that - explains visually the bug. + The Window List Applet automatically adjusts the number of rows based + on the height of the panel. However, due to the varying heights of the + titles for some windows (due to the height of the characters of + different languages, for example), this causes the applet to sometimes + switch between one and two rows without the height of the panel + changing. Instead, it would be nice if there were an official setting so + a specific number of rows could be set for the applet, so that it can + always be two rows, even if the title doesn't completely fit. - I can always reproduce this bug with these steps: - - 1) gnome-panel preferences are displayed in the attached screen shot - gnome-panel-preferences.png. - - 2) window list applet preferences are displayed in the attached screen - shot window-list-applet-preferences.png. - - 3) Open more than 1 window, for example Nautilus and gnome-terminal. - - 4) Open the attached file reconst_accident_fr.pdf with Evince, or - visit the website http://sisinmaru.blog17.fc2.com/ on a browser (I can - reproduce the bug with Firefox, Epiphany and Liferea). - - Expected results: The applet won't change - - Actual result: The window list applet style changes. [Bug 485352] Re: window list applet fails to use its settings (it changes from two rows to one row)
Unfortunately I have not been able to get any Japanese characters in the title to cause this bug. However, depending on the fonts set on your system, the Japanese characters may be seen as taller by your computer than standard Latin characters. If this is true, then expanding the height of your panel should cause the windows with Japanese characters in the title to stop forcing the Windows List into one row. Can you please confirm whether or not this is true on your system? There is, currently, no actual setting in the Windows List applet that allows for making the applet use two rows at all times; it is just determined automatically based on the height of the panel and the height of the titles. Thank you for the clarification, I had previously overlooked the .pdf file in the list. The good news is that I was able to reproduce your issue on my machine, but only with the .pdf file. When testing, it seemed as though the windows list only switched to one row when the title of a window took up two rows. For example, the .pdf file had a title with an arrow on one row, followed by the rest of the title underneath it, causing the windows list to adjust so the title could fit vertically.
