[Bug 2077969] Re: my ubuntu taskbar disappeared and when I go to settings>ubuntu desktop this messages appears "no ubuntu settings found" and "oops, something has gone wrong. Please report a bug in La
Hi, I just upgraded to Ubuntu 24.04.1 from Ubuntu 22.04, and I have the same issue. If I start gnome-control-center on the terminal, I get: $ LC_ALL=C gnome-control-center 14:35:12.8558 cc-ubuntu-panel[95265]: WARNING: No Ding is installed here. Please fix your installation. 14:35:12.8559 cc-ubuntu-panel[95265]: WARNING: No Ubuntu Dock is installed here. Panel disabled. Please fix your installation. So I guess something must have been wrong. [Bug 880331] Re: Can no longer "shutdown" when laptop lid closes
I agree. But my experience tells me that a kernel crash upon sleep or hibernate is a very difficult bug to troubleshoot. Most of the time, these bugs arise only on a specific hardware or BIOS or ACPI design or other unknown things. In my case, I really like to have to only close the lid when I'm finished with my session and have the computer shut down. In fact I don't really need sleep or hibernate, because my laptop boots Oneiric in exactly 5 seconds - an awesome performance ! Waking from sleep or hibernated would take even more time than that... An other comment I would make is that, in my opinion, the philosophy of open source developpment is all about freedom of choice when it comes to UI and settings - so why restrict options users had previously (and were happy to use) ? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/880331 Title: Can no longer "shutdown" when laptop lid closes To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/880331/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 880331] Re: Can no longer "shutdown" when laptop lid closes
Thank you David for your solution. It does work perfectly. But...I still think this is an issue and not a "simplification". Why would a lambda user be forced to go through dconf-editor (which they probably don't know anything about) in order to have the laptop shutdown when they close the lid because they are finished with their session ? This seem to be a rather normal, intuitive behaviour... [Bug 779509] Re: keyboard layout settings not remembered
Hello James, Thank you for the workaround you found. I confirm that this actually worked for me too and that it did solve the problem ! The settings are being remembered across reboots when the proper keyboard is selected at the GDM greeting (and this is only needed once). I do agree with you that this is only a workaround; and that is does not actually solve the bug... But it is now clear that there is an interaction between the GDM greeter and gnome-settings-daemon: GDM seems to superseed the settings saved with gnome-settings-daemon for that user at startup and force it's own settings for the session. Still, I cannot get rid of the unwanted keymap, which will always reappear after reboot. Damn!! Frankly, at this point I don't know anymore and I can't see what else could be tried. [Bug 779509] Re: keyboard layout settings not remembered
It sounds to me that the installer package is doing weird things and perhaps adding unwanted keyboard maps as a default...then this layout becomes a system-wide default that cannot be removed or changed! At least, I experienced the same problem as your Natty server installation but with Natty Desktop "francophone" CD: at install time I chose the fr_CH layout, but it added the "Suisse" keyboard (a swiss german generic layout) and now it's always the default and I cannot get rid of it. It seems to me that the Maverick install CD was better, because I ended up with only one keymap, which was the one I chose. But this bug of not remembering this setting across reboot already existed: I played a bit with these settings under Maverick and I saw that if I added one more keyboard layout, I couldn't get rid of it afterwards. I cannot experiment this in the same way with Natty, because regardless of what keymap I asked for during install, it will always add another unwanted one. Could you please comfirm this behaviour with you Natty desktop environment : if you add one more layout, can you get rid of it afterwards? [Bug 779509] Re: keyboard layout settings not remembered
Furthermore, I don't see why the mecanism for disabling the indicator from showing in the tray would not work or would not be implemented (as stated in other threads about this indicator): in my opinion, the code for handling the gconf key /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/general/disable_indicator is implemented in the source code package gnome-settings-daemon-2.32.1. Here is the code in gsd-keyboard-xkb.c (gnome-settings-daemon/plugins/keyboard) handling that key: static void show_hide_icon () { if (g_slist_length (current_kbd_config.layouts_variants) > 1) { if (icon == NULL) { GConfClient *conf_client = gconf_client_get_default (); gboolean disable = gconf_client_get_bool (conf_client, DISABLE_INDICATOR_KEY, NULL); g_object_unref (conf_client); if (disable) return; xkl_debug (150, "Creating new icon\n"); icon = gkbd_status_new (); g_signal_connect (icon, "popup-menu", G_CALLBACK (status_icon_popup_menu_cb), NULL); } } else { if (icon != NULL) { xkl_debug (150, "Destroying icon\n"); g_object_unref (icon); icon = NULL; } } } Perhaps this function is not doing what it should ? [Bug 779509] Re: keyboard layout settings not remembered
Ok...but do you have two keyboard layouts to choose from or only one? Does the indicator applet show in the tray accordingly? What keyboard did you choose during Natty first installation? Is it the same one as the layout you use now or did you add an additional keyboard layout afterward? It seems to me that the french Ubuntu desktop I used for version upgrade has added the french azerty layout as a default although I asked for the swiss french layout...then I had to add the missing fr_CH layout and now I cannot get rid of the french layout which I don't need - after each reboot, the french layout reappears as default although it was removed in the previous session! A possible clue is that there is a system-wide parameter somewhere that is used early at boot; and it would add the wrong keyboard and select it as default among possible configured layouts (which I think are stored in the gconf key /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/779509 Title: keyboard layout settings not remembered -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 779509] [NEW] keyboard layout settings not remembered
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon Ubuntu 11.04 (natty) Kernel 2.6.38-8-generic (#42-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 11 03:31:50 UTC 2011) Gnome 2.32.1 (Ubuntu 2011-04-14) gnome-settings-daemon 2.32.1-0ubuntu13.1 Description: the keyboard layout settings, when changed to new defaults in a session, is not remembered across reboots. Upon reboot, it will revert back to the original defaults as if it had not registered/saved the changes in settings. Originally, my purpose was to suppress the indicator by removing the additional keyboard layout that was added at installation. I really use only one layout: fr_CH and therefore I don't need this keyboard switch indicator in the tray. Behavior is normal when I suppress the unused keyboard by removing it using the indicator or control center: upon removing the unused keyboard, the indicator disappears from the tray and the layout is fr_CH fine. But when I reboot, these settings are not remembered, and I have to do this all over again in order for this indicator not to show up in the tray. Notes: - this bug appeared in Maverick - other methods described for disabling the indicator (such as creating a disable key in gconf /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/general/ ) do not work or cure the problem. [Bug 30878] Re: merge addressbook entries
I'm the author of the plugin, and unfortunately it won't work anymore with maverick; the evolution plugin framework is completely different in evolution 2.32 (compared to 2.28), and a big part of the plugin will need to be rewritten. Unfortunately, the official documentation (http://projects.gnome.org/evolution/) is now completely irrelevant since it has not been updated in ages, so the new APIs need to be inferred from the evolution source code, which is not very plugin- developer-friendly ... -- merge addressbook entries https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/30878 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Oh well, I got confused from all the different versions I'm currently running. In 8.04 (netbook remix 1.01) screen dimming is not yet implemented and the Ubuntu version in which it was working was actually 8.10. So as far as I am concerned it's working as intended, but still it's neither documented nor configurable. [Bug 220657] Re: reduce backlight brightness / dim display when idle
I can only concur that this is still an issue. Why is it still marked as INCOMPLETE? What's the missing info? I'm using the Ubuntu Netbook Remix 1.01 (lpia, based on 8.04) on an Ideapad s10e and the screen is never dimmed. I think (but can't be sure due to inexistent documentation!) what it should look like: when I'm running a "normal" 8.04 (from USB, using unetbootin) the screen is dimmed to complete blackness after a few seconds of inactivity. I'd really like to debug/fix this issue since it could probably save quite some energy. However I don't know where to start looking since this feature seems to be neither documented nor configurable (timeout, how much dimming). [Bug 197900] Re: Frequent total system freeze since Fri 29-Feb-08 security update
I agree that it is probably not nautilus directly. I suspect it is more probably due to the "udev" or "volumeid" change. But I could not revert these two and apparently reverting nautilus (and "libvolume-id0") was enough to stop it triggering the fault. And no, when the crash occurs, I can't switch to VT. I haven't tried ssh but I tried a ping (at the time) and the machine didn't respond to it (when it usually does... So I would expect the ssh to fail too). As I said, when the machine crashes, there is nothing in the logs and the keyboard led (and the mouse) completly freeze, and that is usually the sign of a pretty bad lock up... Now, I haven't had a single crash since I reverted part of Friday's updates (as indicated earlier) and in fact I am reporting this bug from the machine that had the problem. I suspect I will be ok as long as I block automatic update or we somehow manage to identify the exact issue. -- Frequent total system freeze since Fri 29-Feb-08 security update https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/197900 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 197900] [NEW] Frequent total system freeze since Fri 29-Feb-08 security update
Public bug reported: I have been using Ubuntu 7.10 for quite a while now without any problems however since Friday 29-Feb-2008 I am getting frequently complete system lookups (keyboard led locks, and mouse too) especially when nautilus/x11 is trying to start (but it is that it is more frequent at boot, it also happen later at any time). Now I suspect this is due to a security update that was done on Friday. On my machine I also have Ubuntu 7.04 (no auto update) and Windows XP and they still works perfectly fine (which tends to rule out a hardware fault). So I have cancelled most of Friday's update and since the machine seems to work fine (has been ok for a day whilst before I could not work more than 10 minutes without having a crash). So updates I have rolled back are as follow: libnautilus-extension1 7.1 -> 7 libvolume-id0 17 -> 16 nautilus 7.1 -> 7 nautilus-data 7.1 -> 7 I was also planning to undo "udev" and "volumeid" but synaptic would not let me do it (and so far it seems ok anyway). Now I am sorry that I cannot provide any further details on the crashes themselves as, when they occurs, I really lose complete control of the machine and nothing appears in the logs :-( At present, reverting these updates seems to have done the trick but I also had to block the automatic update... Did anyone had something similar??? Any suggestion on how to try and gather more info on the crash itself (although I suspect it is going to be hard anyway due to the way the machine crash). ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Frequent total system freeze since Fri 29-Feb-08 security update https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/197900 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I also have this issue with 7.10 (and with 7.04). I used the --force- shutdown workaround and it does seem to work consistently. [Bug 98625] Re: Reminder pop-up for exchange calendar items does not work
I am running 7.10 and also still have this problem (had it in 7.04 too). I have found the only reliable way to get alarms is to forcibly shutdown the evolution components when restarting evolution. evolution --force- shutdown; evolution. If I do this, I seem to always get alarms and my appointment list for that day. I close evolution at the end of the day and when I start it again the next day, I run it with --force-shutdown first. [Bug 127484] Mail displays wrong content when moved to another folder
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution The window displaying the content of a mail is changed when you move it to another folder and you open another mail. 1) open a mail (we'll call it MAIL1) in the inbox folder by double-clicking on it. 2) move the opened mail message to Draft folder by drag and drop. 3) open another mail (MAIL2) in the inbox folder by double-clicking on it. 4) now both windows, MAIL1 and MAIL2, display the same content, which is the content of the last mail opened (MAIL2). [Bug 92060] Re: [apport] espeak-synthesis-driver crashed with SIGSEGV in strcpy()
Hello, For some reason, the eSpeak voices are not found. Does this issue happens in a new installation, or did you update a previously installed system? Using the last daily build CD, I do not reproduce this issue in modifying the language setting in the Accessibility preferences menu. Besides it, hopefully, there is no need to change the initial language setting, though it needs sighted assistance at the moment. In the boot menu, you may want to select the Netherlands language + the Belgium keyboard + the screen reader option. Then, Orca talks with the dutch voice of eSpeak. [Bug 82098] Easy install of proprietary voice synthesizers
Public bug reported: This feature concerns gnome-speech and potentially any other speech driver managing a proprietary voice synthesizer. If a user wishes to install a proprietary voice synthesizer, the process is not really straitghtforward: she will install specific libraries, modify configurations files, re-compile the speech driver, etc... GNU/Linux distro could offer a pre-compiled package; the main issues are legal issues. The user could "reconfigure" the speech driver package once her proprietary software is installed. This feature is offered in the Emacspeak Debian package by James R. Van Zandt. ** Affects: gnome-speech (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Easy install of proprietary voice synthesizers https://launchpad.net/bugs/82098 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 77042] Remaining time of burning disappears
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus-cd-burner When burning a data CD, the progress bar displays also the remaining time before the end of burning. But few minutes after the beginning of the burn process, this time information disappears, and only the position of the progress bar gives information about the status of the process. Just before this problem occurs, time remaining information shows bad values, increasing until exceeding one hour, then disappearing. Watching the debug output during the burn process indicate, in my case, that the bug occurs when the writing speed reaches 16X. [Bug 43052] Re: OpenGL viewport cut-off with 915gm graphics
Maybe waiting for the next CVS snapshot will solve my problem. Here's what I found out about this issue: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8010 According to that page it should be fixed in mesa as of 20060826. -- OpenGL viewport cut-off with 915gm graphics https://launchpad.net/bugs/43052 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 43052] Re: OpenGL viewport cut-off with 915gm graphics
I'm also having OpenGL problems with my 915GM graphics (Thinkpad Z60m). The symptoms are as reported: viewport cut-off in various apps, in google earth: wrong viewport and messed up graphics. So I decided to give the compiz repository a try. First I only updated the i810 driver, logged out, restarted X, logged in again. Unfortunately acceleration was now broken (as reported by googleearth). I thought that maybe this driver depended on newer mesa-libs, so I did a full update in adept. Now OpenGL is completely broken. glxgears fails with: $ glxgears glxgears: intel_ioctl.c:62: intelEmitIrqLocked: Assertion `((*(int *)intel->driHwLock) & ~0x4000U) == (0x8000U|intel->hHWContext)' failed. Aborted Google Earth gives the following error message: do_wait: drmWaitVBlank returned -1, IRQs don't seem to be working correctly. Try running with LIBGL_THROTTLE_REFRESH and LIBL_SYNC_REFRESH unset. (and it's *extremely* slow, much slower than with software rendering) Rebooting doesn't help.
