[Bug 968268] Re: Cannot permanently add wallpaper to 'Pictures Folder'

2012-04-24 Thread Hernando Torque
Having a +/- button suggests that I can add and remove images, when I
can't. I'm no design/usability guy, but that really sounds wrong to me.

Also, having an image group called Pictures Folder suggests, that it
has anything to do with ~/Pictures when it doesn't seem to.

Then there are those other questions like: Why aren't images in the root
of ~/Pictures copied to the ~/.cache directory (therefore usable by
lightdm)? Why does ~/.face permanently show up in the Pictures
Folder?

[Bug 928553] Re: Non-default wallpapers are not readable by Unity-Greeter

Which is a moot point, since the original background file likely resides
somewhere in ~/Pictures, which is world-readable by default.

[Bug 952084] [NEW] Cannot set solid color background when background fading is disabled

2012-03-11 Thread Hernando Torque
Public bug reported:

When I try to set a solid color as desktop background with background
fading disabled, all I get is a black background, no matter what color I
choose in the control center/System Settings. The same works fine if I
either enable background fading or use a vertical or horizontal 'color-
shading-type'.

TEST CASE:
1. Press Super, type 'Appearance', and open the result.
2. Make sure you have a background image selected.
3. Disable background fading from the command line:

gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.desktop background-fade false

4. In the 'Appearance' dialog, try to set a solid color other than
black.

RESULT:
* No matter what color is set, the background will always stay black.

To go back to the working case, run the following from the command line:

gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.desktop background-fade true

2012-03-11 Thread Hernando Torque
Public bug reported:

TEST CASE:
1. Open Nautilus.
2. Create a folder with a long name.
3. Enter the folder.
4. Use the breadcrumb navigation (or the back button) to go back to the new
folder's parent.
5. Rename the new folder to something short.

RESULT:
* The breadcrumb navigation updates the new folder name but doesn't change the
breadcrumb's width.

FWIW (from a dupe): all the files are just symlinks to the
/usr/share/gnome/help/.../C/... version of the images.

[Bug 936370] [NEW] debsums reports mismatch for two PNG files

2012-02-19 Thread Hernando Torque
Public bug reported:

debsums reports those two PNG files being changed:

/usr/share/gnome/help/totem/pl/figures/totem_volume_maximum_button.png
/usr/share/gnome/help/totem/pl/figures/totem_volume_mute_button.png

According to the build log, other PNG files were optimized too, but
debsum doesn't report those, so I don't think this is a problem with
OptiPNG.

[Bug 905001] Re: gtk filechooser is broken

2012-01-12 Thread Hernando Torque
Confirming this for Precise. Everytime I want to save something and have
to choose a folder using the filechooser, I get some weird behavior
where instead of the folder I choose, some folder inside that folder
gets chosen (which one doesn't seem to follow a pattern).

TEST CASE:
1. Press the Print key to make a screenshot.
2. Choose Other... for Save in folder:
3. Click through some folders.

RESULT:
* Observe above described behavior (e.g., if I click on File System in the
Places pane, the chooser selects /media).

Using libgtk2.0-0 2.24.8-2ubuntu3.

[Bug 901015] [NEW] Color: Allow setting a color profile system-wide

2011-12-06 Thread Hernando Torque
Public bug reported:

Wishlist: I'd like to be able to set a color profile system-wide from
the 'Color' page in g-c-c, because:

a. This seems to be a more common task than having different profiles for
different users, and
b. On systems where all users use the same color profile, this would get rid of
that unpleasant visual transition when logging in (unity-greeter shows the
uncalibrated background, then switches to the color profile).

[Bug 873545] Re: No GTK theme applied on login

In my case (see bug 859723) this happens with Opera and KeepassX

[Bug 859723] Re: Nautilus appearance without colour or theme

2011-10-28 Thread Hernando Torque
Steffen, I don't think that bug is connected to this one. I still could
reproduce it with a new user (hence a working dconf database).

Question for others: did you ever get this with any application other
than Opera? I'm quite sure I've seen it happen before with XChat and
Nautilus itself, but I haven't been able yet to reproduce it with
anything else but Opera.

[Bug 859723] Re: Nautilus appearance without colour or theme

2011-10-25 Thread Hernando Torque
You are getting a different error though:

(gnome-settings-daemon:2034): Gdk-WARNING **: The program
'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'XI_BadDevice (invalid Device parameter)'.

Where in my case it's:

(gnome-settings-daemon:6546): Gdk-WARNING **: The program
'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.

And in bug #879793 it's:

(gnome-settings-daemon:2108): Gdk-WARNING **: The program
'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.

[Bug 859723] Re: Nautilus appearance without colour or theme

2011-10-23 Thread Hernando Torque
Seems to be a problem with gnome-settings-daemon's clipboard plugin.

I can reliably reproduce the theme issue by opening Opera, putting some
text in the clipboard using Ctrl+c, and then closing Opera. However,
this is _not_ limited to Opera, it's just reliably reproducible with it
here.

Backtrace attached (note, that I didn't run this with GDK_SYNCHRONIZED=1
as this would cause the bug to not show).

[Bug 860485] Re: bad default setting: suspend after 30min when plugged in

2011-09-28 Thread Hernando Torque
I don't even like that to happen by default when on battery. :-/

Let's say I'm a new user that just installed Oneiric. I have a notebook
that has five hours of battery time. I start a download and go grab some
lunch. Scenario 1: When I return I find my system sleeping rather than
the download finished. Scenario 2: My notebook fails to wake up from
standby and I've now successfully lost two hours of work.

This should at least be mentioned in the release notes.

This is not yet fixed. While the graphical glitch is gone (I admit, the

[Bug 841609] Re: Progress bar overlay not working

2011-09-08 Thread Hernando Torque
After some more testing: the progress bar seems to fail whenever the
copy process total file size is = 2147483648 bytes.

** Description changed:

- I just copied a couple of GiB around and noticed that the progress bar
- on the Nautilus launcher item wasn't working. It looks like the progress
- bar gets painted in the other direction, but that's just a guess (see
- screenshot).
-
- The progress bar seems to work fine when staying on the root partition.
+ The progress bar seems to fail showing progress whenever the total file
+ size limit of the copy process is larger or equal than 2147483648 bytes
+ (= 2 GiB).

  TEST CASE:
- 1. Open Nautilus and copy more than one large file from one partition to
another so the launcher item progress bar pops up.
+ 1. Create a bad dummy file:
+ dd if=/dev/zero of=dummy.fail bs=1073741824 count=2
+ 2. Create a working dummy file:
+ cp dummy.bad dummy.good
+ truncate -s 2147483647 dummy.good
+ 3. Open Nautilus and copy each one separately to a different place.
Filesystems and partitions shouldn't matter.

  RESULT:
- The progress bar doesn't follow the progress shown in Nautilus' file
operation dialog.
-
- Using Unity r1486.
+ * dummy.good: The progress bar follows the progress shown in Nautilus' file

[Bug 841609] Re: Progress bar overlay not working

Oh dear, I'm sorry, but it does NOT seem to be dependent on the

and on both Oneiric systems the issue occurs. The only time when the
progress bar seems to work, is when I copy files from the root partition
to the root partition (confirmed on both systems).

[Bug 819286] [NEW] metacity crashed with SIGABRT in raise()

2011-08-01 Thread Hernando Torque
Public bug reported:

This happened while extracting a password protected compressed file
using the Extract Here context menu entry of Nautilus.

To reproduce:

1. Create a new empty file (e.g., right click on your desktop → Create New
Document → Empty Document).
 2. Right click on the file and choose Compress
 3. Now choose .zip and set a password under Other Options → Create.
 4. Right click the compressed file → Extract Here.
 5. Enter the password and click Ok.

→ window decorations should be gone (run (DISPLAY=:0.0 metacity ) at
a virtual terminal to recover).

With the password prompt a second window pops up and vanishes, maybe
that's the problem. This does not happen when extracting the file from
file-roller.

Using up-to-date Oneiric, running Unity 2D.

[Bug 745989] [NEW] Unlock screen shown before system has finished suspending

2011-03-30 Thread Hernando Torque
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

When moving the mouse after clicking 'Suspend' from the session
indicator, the unlock screen is shown until the system is suspended. I'd
say that the unlock screen should not pop up in that scenario.

Happening on two Natty installations, not sure if g-p-m is the right
package.

[Bug 688661] Re: gnome-screenshoot contains mask, when doing screensshot by selecting area

2011-02-23 Thread Hernando Torque
Yeah, it seems to lag somehow, e.g., if you continue to move your mouse
after pressing the button, you'll get a screenshot with more captured
than marked (see attachment).

Note, that all this only seems to happen with Compiz running.

[Bug 675108] Re: gnome-power-manager adds battery to indicator twice when battery hot-unplugged and plugged back in

2010-12-21 Thread Hernando Torque
I can confirm this with up-to-date Natty. You might not want to remove
the battery when running a 2.6.37-rc6 based kernel, as this can cause a
system crash/oops: https://lkml.org/lkml/2010/12/19/90

To reproduce, I simply boot without the battery attached and then attach
it while running.

Confirming in Natty with 2.32.0-0ubuntu1.

However, I'm not sure which package is to blame, as I successfully can
run that command form a launcher in the panel. So maybe gnome-settings-
daemon is another package to suspect.

[Bug 663820] [NEW] Inconsistency: link to folder Desktop translated in side pane

2010-10-20 Thread Hernando Torque
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

In the German translation the folder Desktop is named Arbeitsfläche
in the side pane but shows up as Desktop in the main pane (see first
screenshot). At first I though this is because I changed from the
installation language (English) to the German lang pack, but it also
happens with a pure German system (see second screenshot).

What I expect to see:
- when switching languages: keep the folder names and bookmarks/links (which it
did for folders other than Desktop)
- when installing a non-English system: either translate the folder too or
change the side pane item to Desktop

Don't know if this is a translation, nautilus or gvfs issue.

[Bug 640807] Re: Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor

2010-09-28 Thread Hernando Torque
I forgot, you also need to disable this option for the user ('sudo -u
gdm' will only deal with the gdm login screen):

gconftool-2 --type bool -s
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/xrandr/turn_on_external_monitors_at_startup
false

I guess the easiest way to find out if you are affected by this bug is,
to install the x11-xserver-utils package and run 'xrandr -q' - normally
this should list a proper mode - it doesn't in my case. You can also run
'sudo get-edid' from the read-edid package - if it fails, you'll likely
hit this bug.

[Bug 640807] Re: Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor

2010-09-28 Thread Hernando Torque
Nothing new in the log. I too think that g-s-d isn't the problem but
rather triggering the behavior.

Thing is, without a xorg.conf I only can chose between low/safe
resolutions. With Nvidia's BLOB it's enough to add horizontal and
vertical refresh rates, with Nouveau I also need to provide a modeline.
Xrandr/X (or however 'gnome_rr_mode_get_freq' from gnome-desktop gets
the info) seems to only rely on the monitor's EDID.

[Bug 640807] Re: Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor

2010-09-17 Thread Hernando Torque
Ok, so this seems to have been triggered by the change in defaults in
version 2.31.91-0ubuntu3 (turn on ext. monitors).

Setting
'apps/gnome_settings_daemon/xrandr/turn_on_external_monitors_at_startup'
to false for the user gdm made this bug go away in the current version.
That key has been introduced with version 2.31.91-0ubuntu1:
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/maverick/gnome-
settings-daemon/maverick/revision/109/plugins/xrandr/gsd-xrandr-
manager.c#plugins/xrandr/gsd-xrandr-manager.c

From the ways to get the value for 'config' in the method
'apply_default_boot_configuration', only 'config = make_laptop_setup
(screen);' seems to work (= as soon as enabling
turn_on_external_monitors_at_startup, I see the 60 Hz).
'make_clone_setup' and 'make_other_setup' will call
'gnome_rr_mode_get_freq' at some point, which will return bogus because
my monitor's EDID is invalid.

$ xrandr -q
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 175, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1280 x 1024
default connected 1280x1024+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   1280x1024 50.0*51.0 53.0

---

Due to all the patches I'm not sure if that's an upstream bug. This
should affect all users that have a monitor without EDID (got to be an
old one) or invalid EDID (have seen a couple of models on the video
driver section of the freedesktop bug tracker).
