[Bug 307154] Re: In disk Burning Setup, 'Propoerties' and 'Burn' NOT vailable

2008-12-17 Thread Michael R. Head
Confirmed. A friend of mine recently installed 8.10 and wanted to burn
some video files to DVD or VCD. Using Brasero he was able to load the
videos and click the Burn... button on the main windows. A dialog
popped up with some options about NTSC, PAL, and aspect ratio. The
Burn button on that screen never becomes enabled. He tried all the
options in that window, and nothing succeeded in enabling that button.

I've not reproduced his problem on my 8.10 laptop and I can't figure out
how to get that Burn button to be enabled. What is required to get
brasero to burn a DVD or VCD?

[Bug 289655] [NEW] Progress bars in Extract Here dialog does not update (always stays at 50%)

2008-10-26 Thread Michael R. Head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

When extracting multi-archive rars containing a single entry, file
roller stays at 50% during the extraction.

File roller appears to be keying off the number of entries in the
archive to populate the progress bar, rather than the number of archives
in the set. This is somewhat disorienting because the progress stays at
50%.

In this case, either the number of rar files in the archive set should
be used, or the progress bar should be put in indeterminate mode.

[Bug 218070] Re: Nautilus not showing the desktop icons wallpaper on login

doing rm -rf .gconf/apps/nautilus removes this problem for me, but when
I go into the nautilus preferences and change the default icon size from
100% to 150%, the problem comes back (nautilus insatiably chews up CPU
and memory). If I try switching the default icon size back, nautilus
remains in the bad state. Attaching strace to nautilus shows that it's
spinning with poll on an EAGAIN (as shown in the original report). After
logging out and logging back in with default icon size set to 100%,
everything is OK again.

I'm seeing this on PPC-based mac hardware.

[Bug 225615] Re: Heavy memory leak in gvfsd-http

2008-05-21 Thread Michael R. Head
Confirmed in gvfsd-dav, too.

Reproducable using gnome-user-share on machine 1, and connecting using
network:// on machine 2.
Transfer any file from Public on machine 1
Fire up top and watch the memory blow up.

You'll also find that when the total size of the files copied exceeds
free memory, that the copy process fails and the dav mount must be
unmounted before it can be used again.

I've been hunting through gvfsbackendhttp.c and soup-input-stream.c
(and libsoup itself), but I haven't found the leak yet. Presumably
there's some buffer that's not being freed somewhere after the data is
pulled out...

[Bug 232295] [NEW] Google calendar plugin does not properly handle repeating events

2008-05-20 Thread Michael R. Head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Now that the Google calendar plugin works (in 2.22.1.1-0ubuntu2), I've
found a smaller bug.

Here's my problem:

I have my google calendar connected both with an On the Web calendar
and a Google calendar in Evo.

I have repeating events in my online google calendar.

When I use the On the web calendar, all events show up properly as
expected.

When I use the Google calendar, I only see the first event in the
repeating series.

I believe there's a Duration: field in the XML which indicates how
frequently to repeat the event that is being ignored by evo. I think it
also makes mistakes with respect to the Except on: field.

[Bug 220300] [NEW] Evince no longer thumbnails pdfs in hardy

2008-04-21 Thread Michael R. Head
Public bug reported:

true
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gconftool --get /desktop/gnome/thumbnailers/[EMAIL

evince-thumbnailer -s %s %u %o

Indeed, postscripts and pdf.gz files both thumbnail just fine.

So I'm guessing there's something odd with the gio/gvfs config for my
account that's causing gvfs to report pdfs with the wrong content type.

[Bug 198111] Re: Evolution and Google calendar

2008-04-10 Thread Michael R. Head
Well, Ubuntu doesn't develop Evolution, probably it's better to ask on
the gnome bugzilla.

The best option I've found so far is to get the private ical feed from
each google calendar you want to access locally and add it as a calendar
On the Web. That way, the events show up in evolution and in the
clock/calendar widget.

This calendar will be read only as far as Evolution is concerned, but
you can sign in to the google calendar web site to make changes and
they'll be reflected locally.

[Bug 211732] [NEW] [hardy] videos aren't playing with proper aspect ratio

2008-04-04 Thread Michael R. Head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

After upgrading my G4-based Mac Mini from gutsy to hardy, I'm finding
that videos are not showing up properly. Totem seems to think that the
monitor (a 16:10 24 LCD, attached over a VGA cable, running at
1920x1200) is 4:3. When I play videos on it that, they are stretched
horizontally, and cycling through the available aspect ratios (with the
'a' key) doesn't solve the problem (for 4:3 videos they start out
appearing stretched out and only become more stretched out as totem
tries other aspect ratios for the video). This leads me to believe that
totem isn't figuring out the correct aspect ratio for the display.

I've tried with mplayer and VLC, and both seem to work (for example, 4:3
videos appear with proper-width side bars). Totem under gutsy worked
fine, too. The same videos running on my Thinkpad T61p laptop with a
1920x1200 screen show up just right using totem-xine and totem-
gstreamer.

I've tried both totem-xine and totem-gstreamer on the Mac Mini. Under
totem-xine the problem is actually worse: 4:3 videos have no side bars,
whereas with totem-gstreamer 4:3 videos have small (not large enough)
sidebars.

This happens using Xv or straight Xv-less plain X11 output.

[Bug 210983] [NEW] f-spot 0.4.2-1ubuntu1 didn't make it into the powerpc port for hardy

[Bug 203825] Re: [hardy] GDM hangs on a black screen upon startup

2008-04-01 Thread Michael R. Head
I think I saw this, too.

In my case, I could see the beige background and the circular timer
mouse cursor spinning indefinitely. I went to a text console and ran
top. I saw that gdmgreeter was monopolizing the CPU. I editied gdm.conf
and switched to gdmlogin, restarted gdm and all was well (though
gdmgreeter probably shouldn't be spinning like this).

I didn't find anything apparently relevant in the gdm log, syslog, or
Xorg.0.log.

I reboot fairly often on my dual boot laptop. I have all the latest
updates as of april 1, I use the nvidia binary driver, and have a T61p
laptop with a Quadro FX 570M video chip.

[Bug 71593] Re: glChess has no 3D

gnome-games already recommends python-gtkglext1 and python-opengl

It doesn't need those packages to run -- they just enhance the
functionality -- so it doesn't actually depend on them. This sounds
like correct packaging to me.

[Bug 198167] Re: [hardy] account default for always bcc doesn't set the field for new message

2008-03-14 Thread Michael R. Head
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 92036 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/92036

Wait, is this really a dupe of bug 92036? This is a NEW regression in
hardy. bug 92036 was something different, since it was triggered by
clicking a mailto: link from outside evolution. This bug is about the
fact that the first account's BCC settings are ignored even when
creating a new message from inside evolution!

Similar effect, but different cause. It may have the same solution, but
I'm not sure this should be considered a dupe until that's determined.

[Bug 92036] Re: When clicking on mailto-link in Firefox, Evolution ignores BCC in settings

2008-03-13 Thread Michael R. Head
It's important to me because if I BCC a mail to myself, I have a greater
degree of certainty that the got out and into the world and a copy
stored on my mail server. Sure, as a workaround, I can fiddle Evo's sent
folder setting to be a folder on the imap server, but that just copies
the message to a mailbox, it doesn't route through SMTP.

In any event, Evo should work properly with any legitimate configuration
of the settings it provides. As bug #198167 shows, there is probably a
deeper bug here.

[Bug 201513] [NEW] [hardy] Setting CapsLock to be the compose key still causes the capslock key to trigger the capslock LED

2008-03-12 Thread Michael R. Head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

Settings CapsLock to be a compose key used to entirely disable the
capslock functionality, including disabling the activation of the LED.
Under hardy, using this same setting, the capslock feature is disabled,
but pressing the capslock key does trigger the capslock LED to toggle on
and off. This is confusing because typing when the CapsLock LED is lit
puts lowercase characters on the screen.

The only layout setting I have off-default is the compose key
location, which I have set to CapsLock.

What I expect to see is that the capslock would only trigger composition
(for characters like æ, ü, ß ...), would not cause uppercase characters
ever to be automatically be entered, and would leave the CapsLock LED
alone.

[Bug 198525] [NEW] [hardy] gedit crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_check_instance_is_a()

2008-03-04 Thread Michael R. Head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

Every app is segfaulting when writing to disk.

I've been trying to save a spreadsheet in openoffice, and OO.o kept
crashing. Eventually, I tried to copy/paste and save the same
spreadsheet in gnumeric, but then gnumeric would crash when attempting
to save.

After a few rounds of this, I tried to save a text document with gedit.
Same result.

Fortunately, OO.o has workable document recovery, so the spreadsheet
wasn't lost. I'm glad I wasn't working in gnumeric...

[Bug 198167] [NEW] [hardy] account default for always bcc doesn't set the field for new message

2008-03-03 Thread Michael R. Head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I set Evolution to bcc myself on all messages. Under past releases of
Evo, there was a bug #92036 that was active when emails were created via
firefox links that caused the BCC default not to be used. This bug seems
to have expanded to new messages created from within Evolution.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Launch evolution
2) edit the default account and set (in the account editor) a value for BCC the
always blind carbon copy to and tick the checkbox.
3) close out of the account editor and preferences window.
4) create a new email (File/New/Mail Message)
5) note that the BCC field is empty.

I've noticed that this doesn't happen for all my accounts, just my default,
main account.
It only seems to occur for the first account in the list of accounts when that
account is the default account. Hopefully that will help with reproduction.

[Bug 178512] [hardy] rhythmbox crashes when scanning mp3s

2007-12-24 Thread Michael R. Head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I'm testing in a hardy alpha2 liveCD session.

I have loaded rhythmbox (and the ubuntu-restricted-extras) and dumped
some mp3s into the Music folder. As soon as rhythmbox gets around to
scanning these new files, it crashes:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

[Bug 156643] Re: Internal and external links diplay and print problem

2007-12-11 Thread Michael R. Head
Evince didn't previously display support coloring around the links at
all until 7.10 (I don't have proof of this in a changelog, but I've been
using evince and submitting pdfs for publication for a while and would
not have done so if the PDFs showed up to me with ugly squares painted
around my links and references!).

You're right, though, the boxes should definitely not show up when
printing. Nor should they show up in the nautilus thumbnail or in
presentation mode, IMO.

[Bug 156643] Re: Internal and external links diplay and print problem

2007-12-07 Thread Michael R. Head
This may be due to what's describe in the hyperref doc:
http://www.tug.org/applications/hyperref/ftp/README

  * Be aware that not all PDF viewers support this feature, not
even Acrobat Reader itself:

Some support:
* AR7/Linux: underline and dashed, but the border width
  must be given.
* xpdf 3.00: underline and dashed

Unsupported:
* AR5/Linux
* ghostscript 8.50

So it may be that these boxes were there (in the doc) before, but
weren't supported in poppler or acrobat reader, and now they are (?)

I get the boxes when I use the hyperref in my latex documents (I don't

that I can tell hyperref not to draw the boxes like so:

\usepackage[pdftex, pdfborderstyle={/S/U/W 0} % this disables the boxes around

Then pdflatex doesn't put the boxes in the PDF.

[Bug 152208] A recent (Oct 12) update b0rked my X setup

2007-10-12 Thread Michael R. Head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Well, I'm not totally sure this is a gdm problem, but it was one of the
only that has been updated today related to X, so I'm starting the
report here.

On my laptop, I keep a Xinerama setup with 2 screens so that I can plug
in a second screen, restart X and be using it. So far, this has been
working perfectly on gutsy. If X starts without the second screen
plugged in, then I get a single screen. If X starts when the second
monitor is attached, then I get 2 screens and I can give presentations
nicely.

Some update from today (I update once or twice a day) is now causing X
to bail when it determines the second screen is not attached. After
manually removing all references to the second screen in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf, I was able to get X started again and report this
bug.

[Bug 133567] Re: nautilus hangs on accessing vfat drives - statfs() blocks for a long time

2007-10-08 Thread Michael R. Head
Confirmed that usefree fixes this. I manually mounted one of my USB
drives with usefree, and df didn't hang.

However, when I popped open gconf-editor, and updated
/system/storage/default_options/vfat/mount_options to have the
additional option usefree, I get an error window saying Invalid mount
option when attempting to mount the volume ...

So I guess g-v-m needs to be updated to know that this is a valid
option?

Actually, I guess hal needs to be updated.

There should be an append key=volume.mount.valid_options
type=strlistusefree/append

Once that's there, then you can use usefree in values for the gconf

[Bug 133567] Re: nautilus hangs on accessing vfat drives - statfs() blocks for a long time

2007-10-08 Thread Michael R. Head
I've been trying to figure out what the implications are for using the
usefree mount parameter.

Using the drive with some (which? Vista?) versions of Windows doesn't
update the filesystem's free_clusters, and Linux's vfat driver doesn't
know where the data is now written (if it is at all).

So, if I use the drive with only Linux, and older versions of Windows
(which? XP? 2000?), everything will work peachy, but if I use the drive
with some version of Windows, the free counts will be incorrect in
Linux.

Is this a severe problem? What are the implications if this happens? Can
data loss occur, or is there just a chance that incorrect free space
will be displayed?

[Bug 133567] Re: [gutsy] long delay in nautilus on first access to vfat drive

2007-10-02 Thread Michael R. Head
Yep, this is really annoying. I have 2 500GB drives and 2 250GB drives
that I attach via a USB2.0 hub. I've been using this setup for a while
now, and have just upgraded to gutsy and run into this. It takes several
minutes to open the drives in nautilus.

I assume this has to do with the new pacman disk usage feature.

[Bug 86426] Re: MASTER: [Feisty] Evolution always tries to print A4

2007-09-29 Thread Michael R. Head
Seems unlikely, since gutsy will be out in a month and non-LTS releases
get few non-security related fixes backported.

[Bug 60345] Re: Add to Panel... assumes and hard-codes font sizes

2007-09-24 Thread Michael R. Head
When approaching a fix to this bug, don't forget to try multiple DPI
settings for the font renderer (don't change just the font size).

[Bug 136385] Re: [gutsy regression] rhythmbox is having trouble with many podcast feeds

2007-08-31 Thread Michael R. Head
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 136264 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/136264

By the way, the files are there in my ~/Podcasts directory and play fine
with mpg321, but _not_ totem (it gets the internal data flow error,
too), so I guess this is a problem gstreamer.

[Bug 136385] [gutsy regression] rhythmbox is having trouble with many podcast feeds

2007-08-31 Thread Michael R. Head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Rhythmbox has recently lost the ability to download a number of podcasts
that have been working for a long time from different hosts (they work
on my feisty box). I _believe_ the problem appeared when gstreamer was
updated to version 0.10.14-1ubuntu3, but I could be wrong.

I'm attaching a rhythmbox -d log of what happens when I attempt to
download the latest podcast from
http://www.economist.com/media/rss/economist.xml

inconsistent font size selection in the add to panel dialog.

[Bug 133409] [gutsy] font inconsistencies in add to panel

2007-08-18 Thread Michael R. Head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

I've set the display DPI and font size for my laptop here, and most
programs abide by it alright. I've encountered a weird problem with the
Add to Panel... dialog. Some text uses the right size, and some use an
inappropriate larger sized font.

[Bug 133046] [gutsy regression] extract here no longer puts extracted file here

2007-08-16 Thread Michael R. Head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

The nautilus extract here option used to have the nice feature that if
the archive contained a single file (or directoy), the file (or
directory) would be put here (in the same directory as the archive).
In gutsy, this is no longer the case. An extra directory is created and
the single file is put there. The new directory makes sense if there is
more than one top level file in the archive, but is pointless if there
is just one top level entry.

The old behavior was quite smart and was the right thing to do. Please
bring it back!

w00tage! Though this seems to have already been fixed in 2.19.6 ?!? (I
haven't yet gotten the 2.19.90 packages, and I'm noticing that list view
works properly again)

external subtitles (and I'm using gutsy).
