2010-09-04 Thread Michael Rooney
Alexander, are you still seeing problems? I upgraded my Maverick install
and see no more segfault and the menu is correctly displayed in gnome-
panel (wxbanker 0.8). Using 0.8.1 from the PPA, the menu is displayed as
normal because of the env workaround. I'll undo this work-around in

2010-02-22 Thread Michael Rooney
This just occurred for me today with the latest daily amd64 iso in a
live QEMU environment. I wasn't doing anything which must have triggered
g-ss and resulted in this. The guest system isn't using any proprietary
drivers of course but the host is a 9.10 system with proprietary nvidia.
Is this still expected? If so I can try to reproduce with an xtrace like
you mentioned, otherwise I won't bother.

Re: [Bug 224475] Re: Pressing volume/brightness key changes window focus (e.g. makes Flash exit full screen)

2010-01-25 Thread Michael Rooney
Another comment - while it very well may be Adobe bug, on my machine (Dell
D620, Karmic) if I watch flash in Firefox it exits full screen on volume
change but if I watch it in Chrome beta it does not. Chrome uses the same
flash plugin as Firefox. I do not know for sure if Chrome uses GTK or QT (or
even quite possibly it's own widgets).
Just another me too with info I have not seen in this bug.

I can't confirm this at all, I'm using Chromium (not sure if you are
using actual Chrome) and Flash still exists fullscreen on volume
changes.

Re: [Bug 224475] Re: Changing sound volume with special keys causes Flash to exit full screen

2009-12-02 Thread Michael Rooney
On Wed, Dec 2, 2009 at 5:18 AM, Matthew Paul Thomas m...@canonical.com wrote:
nikolay, thanks for that analysis. I think you're right, this bug is not
actually in Flash and it has other unpleasant effects.

I think that is half correct. While making the notifications not
unfocus the focused window would work around this specific case, it is
still a bug in Flash that unfocusing the window exists fullscreen. Use
multiple monitors and you will see that a fullscreen window will
commonly not have focus. For example, I can fullscreen any application
or watch fullscreen videos in totem/vlc/banshee/hulu desktop (which is
flash, interestingly enough) on one monitor while working on another,
and the flash plugin is the only application I know of which fails at
this use case.

So, I agree that it would be GREAT to fix the focus issue on our side
and resolve the other unpleasant effects you mention, but there is no
reason for Flash to expect focus to remain in fullscreen either (no
other application does), so it is also a bug in Flash. It seems like
the bug should be fixed on both sides, because neither should be
behaving the way it is it seems, and both will have good consequences
besides this bug :)

[Bug 279406] Re: Shut Down dialog doesn't open in the foreground

2009-08-28 Thread Michael Rooney
This is working as intended originally, though perhaps the intention
should change. What happens is that when you press the power button, if
there has been keyboard or mouse activity recently, it opens in the
background so you don't accidentally select one of the options. I'm not
sure what the rationale is here exactly, perhaps that this dialog can be
triggered automatically in some conditions, or that some power buttons
are easily accidentally pressed, and so if you are in the middle of
clicking or typing when this happens, you will shutdown/restart/etc
unintentionally and perhaps lose data.

Perhaps it should not perform this check and always come to the front.
This is almost definitely a dupe of an older bug in which the behavior
has been explained but I can't find it at the moment.

don't know if people will grok ISO or drive.  Maybe Mount disc
image as folder or some such would be better.  Anyway, this probably
needs some usability design thought first.

ISO and drive do seem potentially confusing, but I like your idea
of Mount disc image as folder. However, since it is a context menu,
I'm not sure if we need to give the thing you have just clicked on a
name as the context was already defined by the user's action, this
file. What about just Mount as folder?

Re: [Bug 387573] Re: Drop-down calendar does not close unless you click on it

2009-06-21 Thread Michael Rooney
That sounds like a usability hack, Textureglitch. You can already
scroll in unfocused windows as long as the cursor is over them, so
that would still work. And if you'd like to be able to type in
unfocused windows, then use focus-follows-mouse which allows this
globally. But like I said, scrolling in an unfocused window doesn't
give it focus so you could still do what you are talking about
regardless. The current behavior is inconsistent with other applets
and applications and I think is a confusing and annoying experience to
most users most of the time.

I've asked on the upstream tracker if a patch could be provided, as
there are some screenshots of functional versions and a developer

2009-06-16 Thread Michael Rooney
I surprisingly couldn't find a duplicate so I've opened a task for
gnome-panel.

** Description changed:

The drop down calendar in the panel that opens when you click on the
date and time will only close if you click again on the date and time.
It would be much nicer if the calendar would close with any click
outside the calendar. For example: When I'm using the calendar, I tend
to click it open, glance at it, and return very quickly to what I was
working on. The intuitive thing would be for the calendar to simply
close when I click back on the application I was working on, in order to
keep work flow interruption to a minimum. But an extra click is required
on the date and time bar itself to close the calendar.

Perhaps adding that to the project page would be a good idea, as
currently it says Important! Please do file as papercuts: so it
specifically uses the file verb which makes filing a bug for a
papercut a reasonable outcome, especially for people new to Launchpad as
Matthew mentions. Something short that says that if the bug already
exists to use the Also affects project button on the existing bug could
be good.

[Bug 382551] Re: Evolution 2.26.1 on 9.04 connecting to Exchange 2003 - crashes when you delete a document

2009-06-01 Thread Michael Rooney
Hello Marc, thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping
to make Ubuntu better! This bug did not have a package associated with
it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this
bug as a bug in evolution.

For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of
applications have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This
can be accessed via the Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the
application with which you are having an issue. You can learn more
about this feature at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 74008] Re: Include the window border doesn't work by default (with compiz)

2009-04-15 Thread Michael Rooney
So upstream has dropped this bug due to compiz not being a part of
Gnome; they say it is in the distros park now if they are shipping
compiz. That seems pseudo-fair, so perhaps we should untriage this from
the upstream unless we decide to follow their decision which doesn't
seem wise as we DO ship compiz. Perhaps we can do a good job 98% of the
time by using the mentioned approach: take the _NET_WM_FRAME_EXTENTS
area and get the corresponding area of the screen.

[Bug 280389] Re: Evolution, Thunderbird and Firefox should follow \\smb links

2009-03-17 Thread Michael Rooney
Thanks Joel, I added an upstream link for the Firefox issue; the second
one you pointed out seems to be it. However they don't seem to think
that is valid behavior as those aren't valid addresses. A workaround
would be to create a greasemonkey script that transforms these URLs
universally. It could probably even be shipped in Ubuntu if we determine
this is useful behavior in a non-ideal world.

[Bug 341400] Re: rhythmbox remains in background after logout

Hello fisherm, thank you for taking the time to report this bug and
helping to make Ubuntu better! This bug did not have a package
associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked
at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right
package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.  I have
classified this bug as a bug in rhythmbox.

For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of
applications including rhythmbox have bug reporting functionality built
in to them. This can be accessed via the Report a Problem option in
the Help menu for the application with which you are having an issue.
You can learn more about this feature at

Further, I can't seem to duplicate this on Intrepid with rhythmbox

state at log-off for this to occur? Perhaps it was fixed.

[Bug 331311] Re: volume/brightness notifications are blank (all black)

2009-03-04 Thread Michael Rooney
So now if you have a different icon theme, dialogs don't appear to show
up at all. Not blank dialogs, not the old ones, just no indication of
brightness or volume, though the network and other ones seem to show up
fine.

If I use Human or Human Clearlooks, everything works as expected.
However if I customize either of them to use a gnome-colors icon theme,
then I don't get any sort of notification. Is this a different bug or a
consequence of the attempt at fixing this one?

[Bug 337964] Re: Power Manager is the only System-Admin.. tool that can't be dismissed with ESC

2009-03-04 Thread Michael Rooney
Hi Jarlath, thanks for your bug report! Many other of the tools also
cannot be dismissed via escape, such as: Authorizations, USB Startup
Disk, Language Support, System Log, System Monitor, and Software
Sources. Applications are not intended to dismiss themselves via escape;
that behavior should really only happen for dialogs such as Hardware
Drivers.

Am I misunderstanding something? What makes you say that it is the only
tool which can't be dismissed via escape? From my testing it seems like
most applications there do not behave this way.

Tomas, if your emails aren't getting to Launchpad then we have no way to
triage your bugs. From the perspective of anyone looking at the bug, you
aren't responding. I understand your frustration in that you are trying
to communicate, but obviously no one else has any way of knowing that
and the actions taken are quite logical in response (marking Incomplete

having troubles) then just visit the actual bug page and leave your
comments there to ensure they go through. Then this won't happen to you
