[Bug 1875991] [NEW] Screen unlocks without password

2020-04-29 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

I think this might be a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1870803 however,
I can't find out to add my machine information to it.

A little more information I can add - not sure if it's the same for
original reporter - when I first log into my account I get some sort of
notification about gnome-screensaver not being enabled because gnome
isn't installed; or something to that effect. This started upon upgrade
to Focal.

TLDR: If I lock my account using the gnome-menu, then press ctrl+alt+F7,
it immediately goes to my session without needing to type a password,
bypassing all security.

[Bug 1543782] Re: Complete system freeze some time after lock screen starts

2017-03-06 Thread Richard Eames
I think this is/was either a bug in the radeon driver, or a faulty
graphics card. (however, it was only triggered when on the lightdm gtk
greeter screen). I've replaced my card with another one, and no longer
have this issue.

[Bug 1543782] Re: Complete system freeze some time after lock screen starts

2016-04-26 Thread Richard Eames
The only note-worthy log entries I see in that folder are in
x-0-greeter.log, and I'm not 100% sure they're related to this bug, I've
attached the log file.

I have just managed to reproduce this again:
1) I sshed into my machine from another machine to verify when my machine
crashes
2) On my machine I hit ctrl+alt+L to start the lock screen
3) Waited a few minutes (not sure how long I actually need to wait)
4) pressed the num lock key
At that point, the LED lights on my keyboard and mouse turned off, and the
monitors displayed the "not connected" message. On the machine that I used to
ssh with, the terminal had frozen.

The reason I assigned this to lightdm is because I've reproduced this
bug on the greeter screen where (I think) it's the only thing running,
and it crashes the greeter leaving just the background image/colour
displaying.

I have a new computer, and installed a new copy of Ubuntu 16.04 on it,
and I still get this issue. It's most likely related something new added
in 15.10 that is still causing issues in 16.04.

As an experiment, I tried logging out of my account and leaving it (over

login UI had disappeared. Perhaps a bug in X or lightdm?

[Bug 1543782] Re: Complete system freeze some time after some inactivity

2016-02-29 Thread Richard Eames
Another interesting data point: Last week I disabled the screensaver +
monitor turning off, and instead of locking the screen, I just turned my
monitors off, when I got to work this morning, my computer hadn't
frozen. So, this bug appears to be related to the lock screen. I'm not
sure what I'm using for a lock screen, to start it I've used both `dm-
tool lock` and ctrl+alt+L, both cause my computer to freeze.

[Bug 1543782] [NEW] Complete system freeze some time after screensaver starts.

2016-02-09 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

Ever since updating to 15.10 my computer has been freezing every day.
Usually this happens after I've left work, and since I leave my computer
on, I manually start the screensaver (ctrl+alt+L), and when I come back
the next morning, the computer is completely unresponsive, even to
sysrq. Gnome screensaver itself doesn't appear to be the culprit since I
can turn it on, then log back into my system any time within perhaps 5
minutes. Looking at my root journalctrl output, yesterday, it appears to
have crashed 30 minutes after I logged out (I was zeroing a drive with
dd, and was issuing a kill -USR1 to track the progress every 30
seconds).

At first I thought it might be a botched upgrade from 15.04, so I tried
a clean reinstall last week, but it still freezes. There is also nothing
in the logs that would indicate an error/crash.

The only potentially related piece of information is that I use gnome-
shell, installed via ubuntu-gnome-desktop.

I'm not sure what package to file this under since I don't know how to
reproduce, or how to diagnose the issue. Any debugging advice will be
appreciated since this issue is really starting to annoy me.

[Bug 1453442] [NEW] Destination folder (null) does not exist when dragging over chromium

2015-05-09 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
- Open an archive with the file-roller gui
- Place the window over top of chromium
- Open a nautilus window
- Drag the contents of file-roller (to extract them) over to the nautilus
window making sure that the dragged content passes over the chromium window.

- Nothing should happen until I drop the contents onto the nautilus window at
which point the content is extracted

[Bug 958188] Re: SMART causes SSD to die with unhandled error code

2012-04-08 Thread Richard Eames
Unfortunately, the cables were not the issue. I tried with different
cables and different machines. I returned my drive and got a replacement
of a different brand, which has lasted longer than the other two
combined. I still think the issue may have been caused by issuing a
S.M.A.R.T, but I'm unable to do any further testing. I'll change this
bug to invalid until someone else has a similar issue with OCZ Petrols.

[Bug 958188] [NEW] SMART causes SSD to die with unhandled error code

2012-03-17 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

I have an OCZ Petrol 128GB SSD, if I run S.M.A.R.T via gnome-disk-
utility my system freezes because it remounts the drive read only.
Checking my syslog I see a lot of unhandled error code messages. If I
then do a soft reboot, the SSD is not detected in POST; I have to hard
reset to see it again.

This is my second OCZ Petrol, because the first one completely died in
more-or-less the same manner: it stopped showing in POST. So, I fear it
may be gnome-disk-utility causing this, and not two random failing
drives.

Here's an except from my syslog:

[Bug 955546] Re: gnome-terminal crashes with forked command not found if path is too long

2012-03-15 Thread Richard Eames
Unfortunately, there isn't a crash report. I've tried to get a backtrace
in gdb, but gnome-terminal forks or something so I don't know how to
follow it.

I've also managed to reproduce this on precise.

[Bug 955546] [NEW] gnome-terminal crashes with forked command not found if path is too long

2012-03-14 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

The affected package could also be the command-not-found package.

There seems to be a bug with the way either gnome-terminal or command-
not-found handles unknown commands that are forked. It also seems to be
dependent on the length of the full path.

My testcase (which may have to be fiddled with):
~$ mkdir 123456789012345678
~$ cd 123456789012345678
~/123456789012345678$ pwd
/home/redbrick/123456789012345678
~/123456789012345678$ a
* gnome-terminal crashes *

I've reproduced this on three different machines.

[Bug 797986] Re: rhythmbox displays in front of window, but functions as if it is behind

2011-12-02 Thread Richard Eames
I can't really reproduce it on Oneiric because you can't minimize
rhythmbox to tray. However, I can still reproduce it on Natty, I'm using
Metacity.

[Bug 797986] [NEW] rhythmbox displays but isn't clickable if it starts behind full screen window

2011-06-15 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

This is a weird bug to describe, and reproduce. I'm not entirely sure
this is a rhythmbox bug, or a metacity bug.

Here's how I *think* it's reproduced:
1) start rhythmbox, have it hide to tray on minimize/close so that it's
accessed through the sound menu.
2) close rhythmbox so that it's hidden
3) open a terminal
4) position the terminal so that is where rhythmbox will appear
5) change focus by clicking on the desktop
6) change focus back to the terminal by clicking on it
7) go to the sound menu and open rhythmbox

Expected results:
Rhythmbox should display in front of the terminal

Actual results:
Rhythmbox appears in front of the terminal, but behaves as if it were behind.

See attached screenshot, notice the window border is missing where it
overlaps the terminal.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I used to be able to change the order of the windows in the window list
applet by drag'n'drop, now I'm unable to do so.

Steps to reproduce:
1: Open up two different programs. E.g, terminal, then gedit

[Bug 609647] [NEW] Cannot stop screensaver with mouse

2010-07-24 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

When my screensaver is about to kick in, the whole screen fades. It used
to be, that if I moved the mouse, or pressed a key on the keyboard
during this fadeout, I could stop the screensaver from starting. This is
no longer the case though. Is there a gconf setting I need to change?

[Bug 449001] [NEW] [Karmic] Wrong file removed in tree viewer with Move to Trash

2009-10-11 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

When using the Move to Trash option in the right click menu on the
File Browser pane in Gedit, the currently hightlighted file - instead of
the file under the right click - is moved to the trash.

Steps to reproduce:
1: Create two New Files in the File Browser pain. Call them foo and bar.
After creating the second one, it should be highlighted.
2: Right click on the unhighlighted file, choose Move to Trash

Expected behaviour: The file which is right clicked on should be sent to trash.
Actual Behaviour: The highlighted file is sent to trash.

This actually happens to all the menu items, such as rename.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64

[Bug 449010] [NEW] [karmic] Highlighted files in File Browser wont open

2009-10-11 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

If a file is highlighted in the File Browser panel, you cannot click it
to open it. You instead have to open another file, then go back and
select the file you really wanted.

Steps to reproduce:
1: Create a new file called Foo in the File Browser panel. It should show up
as being highlighted, but does not open it (which is fine).
2: Click on the highlighted Foo file.

Expected behaviour: File Foo opens.
Actual behaviour: Nothing happens.

[Bug 344621] Re: gnome-screenshot doesn't save to locale Desktop

2009-04-23 Thread Richard Eames
1: Have a user with an English locale.
2: System-Administration-Change Language
3: Switch to French
4: Install
5: Reboot / Log out
6: Change language in GDM to French
7: Login, you should be greeted with a message box asking to change the default
directories, allow it.
8: Press print screen, or use the program
9: The save dialogue defaults to Desktop, instead of Bureau.

I'm sure there was a way to completely skip the save dialogue, but I
can't remember how to do it.

2009-04-23 Thread Richard Eames
Ok, so I've been looking through the source for gnome-screenshot. What
I'm experiencing might not be a bug, but just the way it works. By
default I think it chooses the last directory a screenshot was saved in,
which for me must have been ~/Desktop. That being said, perhaps it
should default to the user's desktop (or whatever get_desktop_dir()
returns).

[Bug 344621] [NEW] gnome-screenshot doesn't save to locale Desktop

2009-03-17 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

If you change your locale after install, the screenshot is saved by
default to the original Desktop directory.

I installed ubuntu in English, so I have a Desktop directory, but I
switched language to French (while learning it) and that creates a
Bureau directory to be used as the Desktop. gnome-screenshot defaults
to using Desktop instead of Bureau.

Hmm, and the Desktop link in the Resources menu is not
translated/changed. (new bug?)

[Bug 320619] [NEW] [jaunty] rhythmbox does not play music

Public bug reported:

That's the best I can describe the problem. If I click play, the button

What version of Ubuntu are you using? If it's 9.04, try moving the
sensitivity to low.

[Bug 288446] [NEW] Cannot do odd roots of negative numbers.

[Bug 288446] Re: Cannot do odd roots of negative numbers.

2008-10-23 Thread Richard Eames
It doesn't require imaginary numbers for odd roots, only even roots, is
a bug. The cube root of a negative number is defined, as is the 5th root
of a negative number, etc, so no need to implement complex numbers.

[Bug 257471] Re: Ejects CD when pressing ctrl+C on Artist input

2008-08-13 Thread Richard Eames
Actually, this might be related to something else. I installed ubuntu
with Dvorak as my default layout, but recently went back to qwerty after
breaking one of my wrists; anyway I noticed that even though I'm typing
in qwerty when on the console I have to access the control codes as
though I were using dvorak, so CTRL+I to kill a program instead of
CTRL+C. So, sound-juicer might be suffering the same problem.
