[Bug 35222] Re: make clear to users that devices need to be unmount before beeing unpluged
the issue has been fixed in gnome-mount and now gvfs as a similar issue which is bug #208730, closing this one since the bug described there has been fixed and there is already a new one about the gvfs change required ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Fix Released -- make clear to users that devices need to be unmount before beeing unpluged https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/35222 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 35222] Re: make clear to users that devices need to be unmount before beeing unpluged
I noticed this the other day in Edgy. I was transfering files to my phone over a USB cable. The phone connects as a mass storage device. The transfer progress dialog is done in a couple seconds, but it obviously hasn't finished copying. One time I removed the device and was given a wanring to properly unmount the device. So maybe this warning was not in previous versions and has now been implemented in Edgy? But there is still a problem with this. I tried to unmount in Nautilus by right clicking the device and slecting Eject. Well, nautilus shows the device instantly disappear from the menu, when in fact files are still being transferred. I disconnect after doing this and an error pops up that the device could not be unmounted because the device does not exist(i removed it). So without an accurate file progress dialog or a unmounting dialog, there is never a way to know when your transfer is finished. -- make clear to users that devices need to be unmount before beeing unpluged https://launchpad.net/bugs/35222 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 35222] Re: make clear to users that devices need to be unmount before beeing unpluged
I have noticed this too - the problem is the user might not realize this delayed write (async?) behavior is used and think their files have finished copying when in fact it hasn't actually started. Possibly a dialog should pop up when a USB disk is mounted with something like This device uses delayed write: Any changes will be made when the device is unmounted. Make sure to unmount the device before disconnecting the cable or removing the device Also as an aside - why is the delayed write used - it's not the default behaviour in Windows (where you can just remove the device once the file copy dialog disappears) and could be confusing for migrating users. -- make clear to users that devices need to be unmount before beeing unpluged https://launchpad.net/bugs/35222 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
