[Bug 603746] Re: the word 加入 in grou p managment should be 新增
I've applied the changes in explained in my comment #19, I hope that will be enough. Commit is 85e1a92, which will be available in GNOME 2.32 for Maverick. See attached screenshot for a preview (sorry for the ugly theme, GTK+3.0 without engines that is). ** Attachment added: Capture.png http://launchpadlibrarian.net/53474365/Capture.png ** Changed in: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged = Fix Released -- the word 加入 in group managment should be 新增 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/603746 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-system-tools in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 603746] Re: the word 加入 in grou p managment should be 新增
I understand this concern, but I don't think that's the problem here: - Add/Delete means Add/Delete and item of the list, and the ambiguous point here is: what's in the list? (users or groups). The general idea of having short labels is pretty intuitive and is used in many other places (file chooser, Empathy account configuration...) - Add and Delete are and should be translated the same for all buttons, be this term applied to users, groups or connection entries: that's a standard, and actually Delete is translated from GTK+ itseld. From what I've understood, the Chinese translation should not be changed, so contexts wouldn't help. Of course, I could add translation contexts if you have an example of a language where there's an issue. So I think the best I can do is say Available groups on the system: on top of the list, and possibly move the Manage Groups button to below the users list, to make it clear this is -- the word 加入 in group managment should be 新增 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/603746 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-system-tools in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I agree with using Add Group and Add User, that is absolutely more clear when we don't have titles above the list. However, if we are going to have tiltle above the list, I think that it would be too repeative to use Add Group and Add User buttons. -- the word 加入 in group managment should be 新增 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/603746 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-system-tools in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 603746] Re: the word 加入 in grou p managment should be 新增
@Arne I thik you have missed the point here. Because what the user see here is actually a list of goups available on system not the groups which the user is a member of, there is no way to let the user become a member of by using Add buttun. The button here is for creating a new group for the list of groups available . As a result, the core problem is Why the user hade had mistaken? 加入 in Chinese means Add something/someone into, if the user has known that the list pirnts all the groups available on system, and he would understand the button is to Add a new group to the list of available groups on system but not Add a user into a existing group. So it doesn't matter what we translators tanslator anything within the meaning of adding. If we use 新增, 增添...etc instead, the user might still thinking the button is to Add a user into a existing group. That doesn't help, cause the translation here is not the reason causing the user get mistaken. That's what I have stated at the very first of comments.
I don't believe that would improve things. The confusion is not around the fact that the list represents groups: it's quite obvious, since the list in the main window represented users, and you clicked on Manage Groups. The problem can be that we don't know whether the groups are those present on the system, or those the user is member of - this comes from the fact that it's hard to find a correct place for the Manage Groups button. Maybe I can put it under the users list in the main window, to make it clear that it's a global option? -- the word 加入 in group managment should be 新增 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/603746 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-system-tools in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 603746] Re: the word 加入 in grou p managment should be 新增
Well, it might be funny that the first time I saw the user list I didn't realise that it is a list (I have only ONE user then, so I thought I was editing all the settings of THAT user) until I click the Add button two days ago. :P That's what the saying goes, if you never try, you will never now. I assumed the group list listed in Manage Groups were the user is a member of (the same reason: I have only ONE user displaying on my screen then), just like what you have mentioned above. I clicked the Add button again to give it a try and found out that I was adding a new group for the system. That's why I thought it might be better to add User(s): or Groups:. As to putting the Manage Groups button under the users list, I have no idea it is better or not... I believe we should listen to others' voice.
I don't think there can be a real confusion, simply clicking on the button will be enough to find out what the button means if needed. [Bug 603746] Re: the word 加入 in grou p managment should be 新增
@Milan Bouchet-Valat To be honest user interfaces have to be intuitive. Needing a user to click and then understand what is with a button is not preferrable. [Bug 603746] Re: the word 加入 in grou p managment should be 新增
My point was that it should be obvious what the button does for most people, and that /in addition/ there's no risk of being misled since in the end, clicking the button will explain it all. But I agree GUIs have to be intuitive. The fact that the string is not obvious in Chinese is not my problem as English is correct: translators are free to use a better version if needed. OTOH, if you think we can improve the English text, please make suggestions, I'm open to improving things of course.
We don't have to bother whether 加入 is different to 新增 or not here. If fukid have difficulty accepting 加入 here, please contact me directly by mail. In my opinion, the window title here says group settings doesn't convey that this is a list of groups, so users don't know whether he/she is going to add a new group to the list or he/she is going to add a existing group for the user himself/herself. That should be more clear.

In English, we use Add/Delete as in many other places of the desktop. I don't think this needs to be changed, as it's perfectly clear. If Chinese suffers from ambiguity here, feel free to use another word that's better suited to group creation - and if you say the word is correct, changing English won't help you. ** Changed in: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- the word 加入 in group managment should be 新增 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/603746 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-system-tools in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
