[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-03-30 Thread Oliver Joos
I also feel a strong temptation to add another why I don't like those
buttons, but let me try differently:

To me the problem seems to be, that ALL themes are affected by a
decision meant for the new themes only. So I propose to fix this by
changing the GLOBAL setting for button positions into a PER-THEME
setting. And as the design team makes use of this setting, they would be
responsible to convince people of Gnome to fix this.

Apart from my interest on fixing this bug I am very pleased to see what
happens in the Ubuntu community if freedom is in danger - even if it's
only the freedom to choose button positions. I feel very comfortable
among people who care about freedom and who care about details. After
all, this is why I love Linux!

[Bug 551480] [NEW] pdf: wrong proportions and margins

2010-03-30 Thread Willi E.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

When using evince to display and print pdf documents the margins and
proportions are wrong.

As test pdf I used the Ubuntu CUPS test page. The pdf has been printed by using
evince (scale is set to 100% and no options of the View menu are set) and lpr
with two different printers (HP Laserjet 4200 and HP Officejet Pro 8500). I put
the two prints (of the Laserjet) together and scanned them - the result is
attached to this bug report.
When using evince the top margin is much larger than using lpr. Printing with
Adobe Reader or printing the same document using Windows is just like printing
with lpr. But it is not only the top margin. If you move the evince sheet so
the two top margins are beside each other you can see that the rest of the
document is out of alignment as well. Additionally (as you can see) the line
thickness isn't the same.

This report isn't a duplicate of others that report from bad margins
only when printing - the bad alignment can already be seen in the GUI.

[Bug 550897] Re: Control Centre No matches found displayed incorrectly

2010-03-30 Thread Clement Lefebvre
- Marking as upstream.
- Confirmed in gnome-control-center 2.28.1-0ubuntu1.
- From a quick look at the code, it looks like the bug is in
show_no_results_message(), in gnome-control-center's libslab/app-shell.c. The
code does use set_use_markup() though, so I'm not entirely sure.

Desktop loads fine, but there is still that 20+ second lag between login

although everything works once desktop loads, I am now getting various
i/o errors at start up (prior to grub) and at shutdown as well. This
has only occurred since the latest updates. Will file a separate bug

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-03-30 Thread Yann
@Jefspa Leta:

Thanks for the underlying information... It's right that having
background from default theme is not so nice to see when you don't want
mauve colors on your desk and have removed default background, even if
this no more a fundamental deal-breaker for ubuntu choice.

I read some would like to make this configurable using an interface... But
maybe something more simple could be done:
-Configure gdm login background according to proposed (or last) login user
theme background... because these are usually synchronised by users so we could
imo avoid creating another config and do this automatically.
-Use a default neutral login theme, black or grey colors for instance, that
will be convenient whatever user theme will be.

But that's no more usability concerns, just fine cosmetics ;o)

[Bug 551194] Re: Rhythmbox constantly consumes 20-30% of CPU

2010-03-30 Thread Lionel Dricot
I've tried without any options (like crossfade) and by disabling all the
plugins. The only difference I've seen is that the info-panel plugin
takes even more CPU.

So it's not related to the options/plugins.

It's also not related to format. Happens with both ogg and MP3 and with
every single file I have on my disk.

gst-launch doesn't have any problem. The process stays behind 2% of the
CPU (and PA always under 1%).

Also, note that it's fully related to play. As soon as I hit the pause
button, the CPU drop instantly. When I hit play again, it rises.

[Bug 551507] [NEW] Gedit indent (CTRL+T) plugin missing

2010-03-30 Thread Lionel Dricot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

In gedit under Karmic, I used to have CTRL+T to indent (Ctrl+shift+t to
revert) and Ctrl+m to comment (ctrl+shift+m to uncomment).

Since the Lucid upgrade, the indent feature has disappeared (but the
comment is still there).

Those features are provided with plugins, it looks like one plugin is
missing.

[Bug 440068] Re: Messaging menu shows entries for users without messages

2010-03-30 Thread Conscious User
Okay, I changed my mind. The focus of this bug seems to have been turned
to the problem of setting connected as the timestamp for login
indicators, but not to the problem of them appearing despite the user
not wanting them to.

I propose changing the description of this bug to something like Should
properly identify login indicators with 'connected' as the timestamp
and stop considering Bug #495671 as a duplicate of this one, as David
suggested.

[Bug 296867] Re: empathy needs to support OTR encryption

2010-03-30 Thread Sam Liddicott
Just to clarify;

1. the fedora guys have marked it as wont-fix
since which we read this comment in the fedora bug tracker:

Jonathan Blandford 2009-11-16 08:23:37 EST

[ Note that upstream has since changed their mind on that, and claims to be
considering how to include OTR. In the short run though, its gotta be pidgin.
]

2. the ubuntu guys have marked it merely as triaged, not wont-fix

Also I note the main advantage of OTR is that it supports end-to-end encryption
even when the transport does not support encryption.

In the mean time I'm the cause of Ubuntu being dissed by my associates
because Pidgin doesn't support video or audio chat, and I'm certainly
not going to use Empathy in it's current state.

Liberation being used as the system font, and while I don't think it's ugly,
I can understand what you mean. Nice to hear that Dalton Maag have been
commissioned to make a new font.

On 30 March 2010 11:42, Matthew Paul Thomas m...@canonical.com wrote:

The Liberation fonts exist only for width compatibility with documents
that were using Helvetica and Times New Roman. They are too ugly to use
for anything else, and we won't be using them in Ubuntu's interface. As
 described in http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/308, Dalton Maag
is working on a new interface font for Ubuntu, currently scheduled for
 10.10.

[Bug 542250] [NEW] It's not posible to descend below the screen in a large main-menu item

2010-03-30 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gnome-main-menu

I installed the Audio creation and editing suite packages and in the
Sound Video item at the main-menu (the icon, not the bar), appears a
lot of applications that not fit on the screen, and when I try to select
one of the last, I'm unable to do it, because the menu goes to top.

Sorry by my English.

This is about the gnome-panel, not the gnome-main-menu. The gnome-main-
menu package contains the menu developed by Novell for SUSE
(http://www.novell.com/communities/files/u7814/menu_default.png); and
not the menu you are talking about.

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2010-03-30 Thread Chris Kenyon
Can someone update the summary of this bug - there is alot of valuable
information in the comments that is not reflected in the summary

- The issue has been an issue for users (especially of large) screens for
several releases
- Trackpad users seem to be particularly impacted by this
- The issue appears to have been significantly aggravated in Lucid by changing
the border width from 3 pixels to 1 pixel

2010-03-30 Thread muawijhe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

I recognised the following problem for the user root:

1) The sound preferences are not accessible using:
System-Preferences-Sound
gnome-volume-control-applet - Sound Preferences

2) The volume applet does not work properly (it does not modify the
system volume)

3) After gdm the system does not play any entrance sound

However, I can play sounds and change volume from rhythmbox and totem
application.

[Bug 536925] Re: gnome-keyring-sharp uses deprecated socket interface; apps cannot use keyring

This bug was fixed in the package gnome-keyring-sharp - 1.0.0-2ubuntu1

---
gnome-keyring-sharp (1.0.0-2ubuntu1) lucid; urgency=low

  * Upload to Lucid from pkg-cli-libs svn
  * Move to source format 3.0 (quilt)
  * debian/patches/02_gnome_2.30_compatibility.patch:
+ Replace socket use with a wrapper around libgnome-keyring.
Makes gnome-keyring-sharp able to work on GNOME 2.30. (LP: #536925)
  * debian/rules:
+ Move to using override_dh_*
+ Run autoreconf before configure, and clean up afterwards in clean
+ Remove the bz2 - gzip conversion from get-orig-source; 3.0 handles
  bz2 orig tarballs for us.
+ Override dh_makeshlibs, as it gets confused by the private glue library.
  * debian/control:
+ Bump debhelper depends to 7.0.50~ for override_dh_*
+ Now arch: any, due to libgnome-keyring-sharp-glue.so
+ Add new build-depends: libgnome-keyring-dev, automake, libtool,
  glib-sharp.
+ Drop unneded ndesk-dbus build-depends.
+ Bump Standards-Version. No changes needed after move to 3.0 (quilt)
  * debian/libgnome-keyring1.0-cil.install:
+ Also install libgnome-keyring-sharp-glue.so and Gnome.Keyring.dll.config
  * debian/copyright:
+ Replace (c) → ©. Fixes lintian warning.

I have to say I've only noticed this problem first with Lucid - I was

grab in a hurry! I think the problem is perhaps exacerbated for those

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB flash key (pendrive) or USB HDD are slowing down with time

2010-03-30 Thread Theodore Ts'o
i had similar issues but also when i was trying to copy a file(around 50-700mb
or larger) from my
local hdd to another folder of the same hdd!!!
so what i found out was that this was happening only in files that i had
downloaded with transmission!

What file system were you using on your hdd, and what version of Ubuntu
are you using?

This isn't surprising, because bittorrent downloads tend to write the
file in random order (depending on what is made available from the bt
seeders and the bt peers) and in multiple threads. Using ext4 and a
relatively modern kernel, it won't be too bad, because ext4 has better
allocation algorithms than ext3. It's best though, if the bt client
uses fallocate(), which is I'll bet what qbittorrent is doing.

So this is a useful bit of information, but I suspect some users have
different causes for their problems, which is one of the reasons why
most kernel developers have refused to use Launchpad. Too many ubuntu
users are glomming onto a bug report, and they post different
performance problems all in a single bug report, without bothering to
give full information about their hardware, software versions, what file
system they are using, etc. And then on top of that Launchpad is slow
as a dog when there it gets too long.

Which is why this bug is marked invalid and why I beg people, if they
have performance problems, to open new bugs and to give full details
about their hardware configuration, what version of Ubuntu they are
running, the exact specifics of the USB device, etc. Otherwise this
can be a great place for people to vent, but most people who aren't paid
to pay attention to dysfunctional bug forums will simply say, Beam me
up Scotty, there's no intelligent life here.
