Remote desktop from ubuntu 12.04 to 11.10 or 11.10 to 12.04.

[Bug 883272] Re: Mouse navigation not working in fullscreen mode

2012-04-20 Thread c4pp4
I would like to join the issue.
I have no problem with my regular usb wireless mouse which is working the way
as expected but with my touchpoint (Lenovo R61i). It's by default configured in
the /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/11-evdev-trackpoint.conf file. My touchpoint
behaves exactly the same way as described in the first post. Oneiric and
Precise (both clean installed).

2012-04-20 Thread sae.area
Thank you for your email!

I think this is related, just not well described.
I think I remember that this kind of feature didn't work in MS Windows either.
The way I understand this feature is whatever application is set as default
application should be tried first to open a file with a probable extension.

Title:
  Changing Default Application for Music/Video/Photos has no effect on

Status in GNOME Control Center:

Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  1) Oneiric
  System Settings → System Info → Default Applications
  Issue reproted by OP: png, gif, svg, xpm (maybe more) do not open with
correct application.

  2) Precise
  System Settings → Details → Default Applications
  Issue reported in Bug #924388: Video opens with Totem even if VLC is
selected as default

  3) Upstream:
  System Settings → Details → Default Applications
  Issue reported in Gnome-bugs #662191: Setting default music player only
works for ogg vorbis files

  What you expected to happen:
  1) When changing the default image viewer in  from 'Image Viewer' to
'Shotwell Viewer' a double click on any image should open the image in
'Shotwell Viewer'.

  2) When changing default video player, all video files should open
  using that app.

  3) When changing default music player, all music files should open
  using that app.

  What happened instead:
  1) When clicking on a png, gif, xpm or svg file Ubuntu will open them in
'Image Viewer' instead of the system default image viewer → 'Shotwell Viewer'.

  2) Videos open in Totem even though VLC is selected to be default.

  3) Default music player only works for ogg files

No effect with gdb, and diffing he log files found no differences.

Two new data points: in xfce, the mouse will freeze and never come back
after 1 or 2 minutes from login.

The problem does not manifest in KDE, which seems to argue against the
idea I'd had that this might be an fglrx problem.

Gnome classic and Gnome shell both seem to not fully load, leaving me
with a blank Ubuntu desktop. No idea what went wrong there, or when.

My next step will be to run off the live cd for a while and see if
everything behaves properly there. If it does, I'll try a reinstall and
run for a while with the Free xorg driver and see how it goes, then try
installing fglrx from jockey (haven't really been following related
bugs, but maybe it's been sorted in the last week or two) and see if the
problem shows up.

This is probably an edge case, so don't lose any sleep over it. If I
find a cause, I'll let you know. Since KDE is unaffected, the mouse
freezes in xfce, and Gnome Shell and Classic both have problems, I'm
thinking something just got hosed in GTK somewhere and a reinstall might
be the best solution.

Thanks,

Jonathan

[Bug 977541] Re: Unable to select text in email

Hi, I'd like to suggest to raise the Importance. Although it does not break the
package as such,
working with mail like that (having to paste the mail somewhere else to select
what I actually
want is a major pain), normal usability is drastically reduced. Also, it's a
regression against
the older (10.04) evolution.

[Bug 907298] [NEW] Switch keyboard layout when user click to keyboard layout indicator

2012-04-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

For today the keyboard layout indicator displays menu if user clicks on
this indicator by left mouse button, right mouse button and middle mouse
button. I proposing to use middle mouse button click to switch keyboard
layouts. KDE's keyboard layout widget already switches keyboard layouts
and AFAIK keyboard layout indicator in Gnome also have this feature. So
I ask to implement this feature in Unity.

[Bug 876897] Re: Changing Default Application for Music/Video/Photos has no effect on some registered types

2012-04-20 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Yes, but as you know, the main point is that there is no functioning GUI
for setting default applications. The user should be able to
choose/change which applications launch for each (an unlimited number)
file type.

Look at the attached screen shot. Notice how Ubuntu's Open With
feature is missing the Always use the selected program to open this
kind of file check box.

[Bug 969166] [NEW] Volume Overlay inconsistent on different machines

2012-04-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The Volume Overlay on my Laptop has a very blurry icon instead of a
monochrome one and on my other computer (PC, not Laptop) which was an
upgrade from 11.10 it is still in the upper right corner on 12.04. I
dont know it this is supposed to be like that or if i need to reset
something.

Because of Unity 5.8 Upgrade i allready did unity --reset multiple
times but the volume overlay remains different on my machines.

reproduce:

1) install 11.10 on one computer and upgrade it to Ubuntu 12.04
2) install 12.04 on another computer
3) get the most recent updates
4) use the Volume Keys on your keyboard on both computers to see the volume
overlay. It should be differ depending on which computer you use.

[Bug 969359] Re: gnome-settings-daemon consumes 100% cpu

2012-04-20 Thread James
It's just happened again.

I ran strace on it and it seems like it's in a loop doing this:

futex(0x1184820, FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE, 2, NULL) = 0
futex(0x1184820, FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE, 2, NULL) = 0
futex(0x1184820, FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE, 2, NULL) = 0
futex(0x1184820, FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE, 2, NULL) = 0
futex(0x1184820, FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE, 2, NULL) = 0
futex(0x1184820, FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE, 2, NULL) = 0
etc.

and occasionally I see:
futex(0x1184820, FUTEX_WAKE_PRIVATE, 1) = 0

[Bug 986189] [NEW] Missing Always Use checkbox in Open With Dialog

2012-04-20 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Public bug reported:

1) Right-click a file in nautilus
2) Select Open With
3) Select Other Application
4) See the attached screenshot MissingAlwaysCheckbox2.png

Notice that it is missing the check box option to Always use this
program for this kind of file.

Even if their are alternative ways to accomplish this, they are not
apparent (user-friendly/requiring-less-steps). I see evidence that this
issue has been reported before, and fixes issued, but I'm filling this
new bug report because the issues is still present.

Re: [Bug 876897] Re: Changing Default Application for Music/Video/Photos has no effect on some registered types

2012-04-20 Thread sae.area
Thank you for your email!
Actually there is such an option, just at another place.
When you right click on the file and go to properties, there is a tab called
Open with
it lists a number of applications and you can choose one and click on Set as
default.

In my option this does suffice. Having a global option, as in the bug I
opened (which is a duplicate of another bug), I think would make it even
more user-friendly. Otherwise I don't see the use of having the Default
setting control panel under settings, when that setting doesn't have any
effect.

Bug description:
  1) Oneiric
  System Settings → System Info → Default Applications
  Issue reproted by OP: png, gif, svg, xpm (maybe more) do not open with
correct application.

  2) Precise
  System Settings → Details → Default Applications
  Issue reported in Bug #924388: Video opens with Totem even if VLC is
selected as default

  3) Upstream:
  System Settings → Details → Default Applications
  Issue reported in Gnome-bugs #662191: Setting default music player only
works for ogg vorbis files

  What you expected to happen:
  1) When changing the default image viewer in  from 'Image Viewer' to
'Shotwell Viewer' a double click on any image should open the image in
'Shotwell Viewer'.

  2) When changing default video player, all video files should open
  using that app.

  3) When changing default music player, all music files should open
  using that app.

2012-04-20 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a
bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

Yes, that method works (thank you), but none the less (for user-

[Bug 973366] Re: Minimising applications go to the wrong window list (with Compiz)

Hi Oli,

I have the exact same problem you experienced, using either Ubuntu 12.04
with gnome classic + effects or Xubuntu 12.04 using compiz instead of
the xfwm.

As you can see, I also did a bug report on it (I must have missed
yours): https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/985651

It's good to know, I am not the only one. I will later try your proposed
workaround, because I could not come up with one.

[Bug 986248] [NEW] Nautilus tree view won't collapse right after expand

2012-04-20 Thread Anthony
Public bug reported:

When using the tree view in the sidebar in Nautilus, if you click on the
triangle next to a folder to expand it and keep the pointer over the
triangle, no amount of additional clicking on the triangle will then
collapse the folder. However, if you briefly move the mouse off of the
triangle (even just slightly) and then back onto the triangle, you can
then collapse the folder again. This is annoying when you want to
quickly expand a folder to see its subfolders and then immediately
collapse again.

Attached is a screen recording showing the problem. Although you cannot
tell from the video, when I am holding the pointer over the triangle
next to the expanded folder, I am repeatedly clicking on it, but nothing
is happening -- then as soon as I move the pointer away and back again,
clicking does collapse the folder.

[Bug 908670] Re: [network]: gnome-control-center crashed with SIGSEGV in panel_get_strongest_unique_aps()

2012-04-20 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
I'll go guessing wildly there, but I think this is all due to just how
g-c-c is getting the AP list. The list is first populated, then re-
processes to get SSIDs. At any point in time during the reprocessing, if
an APs signal was low enough that it disappeared from the scan results
since it was added to the AP list used by g-c-c, trying to get its SSID
will return a NULL GByteArray object. We then try to get a member of
that object to escape SSIDs, which will fail.

[Bug 986269] [NEW] Nautilus pops browser on bash partition mount

2012-04-20 Thread bcbc
Public bug reported:

I first noticed this behaviour in Ubuntu 11.10. When I run my bash
script that mounts partitions on my hard drive (e.g /dev/sda5), Nautilus
pops up with a browser window. This is an illogical action, since I've
not 'inserted a drive', it's already there, and it's just been manually
mounted. This Nautilus action will interfere with the scripts operation
since, when the script tries to unmount the drive (rapidly) it finds
that Nautilus is still busy with it, producing it's browser window.

You wouldn't expect this if you mount a partition from the terminal -
and for the most part this is correct (Nautilus does nothing), but not
all the time. I've managed to trigger Nautilus to pop just with a simple
terminal mount.

I have a workaround in my bash script that creates a udev rule and runs
udevadm trigger to hide the partition, but this seems extreme. I believe
it's a bug in Nautilus in how it responds to the signal that a partition
has been mounted.

Please see this for complete details and discussion of possible
solutions (and the bash script code):
http://askubuntu.com/questions/121569/prevent-nautilus-showing-
partition-mounted-in-bash-script

I understand you can prevent Nautilus responding to inserted drives
etc., but this is definitely not the case here - the drive is already
there, just the partition is being mounted.

[Bug 986275] Re: eog segmentation faults on standard input

2012-04-20 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 966294] Re: gstreamer hangs when accessing webcam (on specific hardware)

2012-04-20 Thread miegiel
It never really hung for me. What happened was that the ubiquity tread
used all the CPU it could get and start eating up all the memory. After
almost an hour of unresponsiveness the last bit of memory and swap was
gobbled up and the ubiquity thread was killed (by 'kswap0' or something
with a similar name). After that the liveCD desktop would start.

It does feel like something hangs, but the machine is actually really
busy (and unresponsive).

I don't have a backtrace or the bugged .iso to reproduce the bug, sorry.

I recently wrote a blog entry on how to easily set up VLC to open all
video files. If you like to set other default applications, the command
sequence can be modified accordingly. The article can be found at

[Bug 986322] [NEW] Can't change layout using Unity applet nor Gnome Control Center --Precise upgrade

2012-04-20 Thread Chascon
Public bug reported:

Problem:
I can't use the keyboard mapping recently chosen.

Details:
Selecting anything other than the US International with dead keys layout from
the Unity applet doesn't invoke a layout change. Going to
gnome-keyboard-properties and high lighting and moving desired layout to top
don't help.

gnome-control-center version:
Version: 1:3.4.1-0ubuntu1

Reproducible?
100% on my system

Steps to Reproduce:
1.log in and change keyboard layout from US International with dead keys to
anything else via the Unity applet
2. type

Actual results:
US International with dead keys layout continues to be in effect.

The following two commands results don't change regardless of what
Keyboard Layout or applet selection.

cat /etc/default/keyboard

XKBMODEL=pc104
XKBLAYOUT=us
XKBVARIANT=intl
XKBOPTIONS=terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp

cat ~/.dmrc

[Desktop]
Language=en_US.utf8
Layout=us   mac
Langlist=en_US:en
LCMess=en_US.UTF-8
Session=ubuntu

gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd
 model = macintosh_hhk
 layouts = [us  intl,us alt-intl,us altgr-intl,us   colemak]
 options = [terminate   terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp,keypad  keypad:atm,grp
grp:shift_caps_toggle]

Expected results:
Anything else layout is nowhere to be seen, US International with dead keys
remains activated.

Workaround
-seems to be to choose the layout from lightdm.

Comments
I don't seem to have gnome-keyboard-properties since running that from terminal
doesn't produce the Keyboard Layout pane. Is gnome-keyboard-properties part of
Precise?

Control Center shouldn't be overridden by system settings. Rather, it
should allow the user to change the system defaults or change it on
behalf of the user.
