[Bug 127944] Re: [gutsy] Open Office applications don't start

Here is my strace, in case it can help someone else.
Pretty much it looks to be an issue with glibc/gtk.
I'm running Kubuntu Gutsy.

[Bug 42862] [Dapper] Voice, Lossy (Ogg multimedia) broken

2006-05-03 Thread Jeff
Public bug reported:

Affects: sound-juicer (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Binary package hint: sound-juicer

The pipeline for the Voice, Lossy (Ogg multimedia) profile is broken.
It produces .ogg files that are not playable by totem-gxine, vlc, or
xmms. I am running Dapper updated from Breezy with sound juicer 2.14.3
and gstreamer0.10. Copying the pipeline from the CD Quality profile and
changing the quality setting works. I've checked this on two machines.

The original pipeline is:
speexenc name=enc ! oggmux

[Bug 229976] Re: gnome-panel has major memory leak

2008-09-10 Thread Jeff
I also have a problem with gnome-panel, memory usage skyrockets to about
2GB _resident_ before I have to logout and log back in to make sure that
gnome-panel is killed and restarted. This is a major annoyance and I
have been plagued by it on 7.10 and now on 8.10 too.

[Bug 113862] Re: Volume and quality problems with dell inspiron 9300 laptop

2007-11-25 Thread Jeff
This is also true in Kubuntu. The workaround I have found is to set the
primary channel to PCM and leave Master and Master Mono at about
half volume. That way volume controls and muting will mute the PCM
channel. Not the most elegant solution but it works for now.
Incidentally, doing this causes the volume onscreen display to not work.

[Bug 378422] Re: Removing unused applications via alacarte results in unusable desktop

2010-08-29 Thread Jeff
Removing .local fixed it for me.

I think I finally uncovered what's been causing gnome-panel, compiz, and
nautilus not to autostart. This has always frustrated me in the past and
has caused me massive headaches -- it seems like it affects a lot of
other people too. I wonder if this is what's happening to most of these
people and they are simply unaware that removing applications from the
menu will cause this problem.

[Bug 329146] Re: nautilus unable to start on login

2010-05-05 Thread Jeff
I just started experiencing this in Ubuntu 10.04 64bit.

First it started out with both my desktop icons and panels not showing
up.

I fixed the panels by simply adding gnome-panel to the startup
applications.

However the desktop icons remain missing until I manually open up a
nautilus window, then the desktop icons will appear.

$ nautilus -q
(nautilus:2060): Unique-DBus-WARNING **: Error while sending message: Message
did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)

$ ps aux | grep nautilus

nautilus

$ nautilus
Initializing nautilus-gdu extension
(Icons appear after that)

Nemes Ioan Sorin mentioned vlc and samba above which just happen to
be two apps I just installed about the same time I started experiencing
this problem. I'm removing those now and will test out the environment
to see if that solved the problem for me.

[Bug 329146] Re: nautilus unable to start on login

2010-05-05 Thread Jeff
UPDATE: Removing vlc and samba didn't seem to do anything. Desktop
icons are still missing upon startup. The desktop icons do show up after
I open a nautilus folder.

To expand on my setup/situation...

I just started having this problem today in Ubuntu 10.04. It started out
as I wasn't able to see panels, desktop icons, or window borders and
Alt+F2 didn't work either among several other problems. The entire
desktop was useless -- I couldn't do anything. This all occurred after I
performed some system updates, installed Minitube and Minitunes. I was
doing some system maintenance so to pin point what started this issue
would be tough.

So I reinstalled a brand new (downloaded from ubuntu.com today) copy of
10.04. The initial startup was problem-free, but somewhere after
installing apps/updates I started experiencing problems. The desktop
environment was functional at least, but the gnome-panel and desktop
icons weren't showing up (Fix for my gnome-panel problem is in my above
post).

Applications I installed: Parcellite Clipboard Manager, GIMP, Pidgin,
Adobe Reader, Songbird, Docky, Ubuntu Tweak, and medibuntu, restricted
extras, codecs and those things. I also uninstalled some default
software like Rhythmbox and Empathy.

I am using elementary theme and nautilus-elementary breadcrumbs.

Ubuntu Tweak settings are as follows:
Compiz Settings: No boxes checked
Desktop Icon Settings: Shop desktop icons
GNOME Settings: Enable Panel Animations, Show icons in menus, Show icons on
buttons
Window Manager Settings: Use Metacity window theme, Enable window transparency
Session control: File Manger: nautilus / Panel: gnome-panel / Window Manger:
gnome-wm

[Bug 235945] Re: Rhythmbox gives priority to APEv2 tags and won't display changes to ID3v2 tags

2009-11-16 Thread Jeff
Yeah I still haven't been able to resolve it. I switched over to
Songbird for the time being. No problems editing ID tags with that.

[Bug 880642] [NEW] gnome-terminal doesn't close menubar for new terminals

2011-10-23 Thread Jeff
Public bug reported:

I've customized the profile to uncheck Open menubar in new terminals.
However, it is shown for new terminals. In the edit menu, Show menubar
is not checked. If I check it, nothing happens. If I now uncheck it,
finally the menubar goes away. I don't want the menubar ever

[Bug 1290697] Re: Font rendering is broken

2014-04-18 Thread Jeff
I'm having this issue too. I'm a web developer and use Gedit on a daily
basis so this is making life difficult.

I did determine a few things though... It only occurs when there is a
scrollbar present. When the document is short enough and doesn't require
a scrollbar the font renders correctly. The same issue also happens in
Synaptic.

[Bug 1290697] Re: Font rendering is broken

2014-04-19 Thread Jeff
Changing 'rgb' to 'rgba' in xsettings fixed the issue in Gedit for me.
However, setting to rgba makes other apps render text poorly. After
screwing around for hours I did something that fixed that thought, but
I'm not 100% sure what it was. I think it was a fontconfig file buried
somewhere in my home dir. I removed all instances of fontconfig in my
home folder. Lastly, I setup a fonts.conf file to clean up any text that
still looked a bit off.

With that said, here's a list of steps to try and resolve it
1. Remove (backup first) all instances of fontconfigs in your home directory (I
think there was one in ~/.local/share/ ~/.config/)
2. Change rgb to rgba via dconf-editor
org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.xsettings rgba-order
3. Download fonts.conf attachment and place in ~/.config/fontconfig/
4. Reboot

[Bug 1557194] [NEW] When deleting an image, view switches to wrong photo

2016-03-14 Thread jeff
Public bug reported:

In Image Viewer (eog 3.10.2-0ubuntu5.1, running Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa,
but with the 4.4.0 kernel), I'm noticing a weird behavior when I delete
an image from within Image Viewer. I'll be scanning through multiple
files (hitting Next, Next, Next) and wanting to delete a few of them.

1. The first time in a session that I delete a photo, no problem. Upon
deleting Photo A, the program will automatically advance to the next Photo B.
2. Scan through more photos... Photo C, which I want to keep, then Next again.
3. Now I want to delete some subsequent photo D. I hit the Delete button on
the keyboard...
4. It pops up 'Are you sure you want to move "Photo D" to the trash?', which is
expected and correct. The bug is that while this dialog is open the viewer goes
back to showing photo B. This is very troubling because I wanted to keep photo
B.
5. When I hit "Yes", the dialog closes and the program automatically advances
to Photo E, the one after Photo D was. (This is correct.)

Note that even though the program shows the wrong image while the dialog
is open, the correct image (Photo D) is the one that's deleted.

[Bug 1799052] [NEW] Application/task bar on left side is visible and operable after screen lock

2018-10-21 Thread Jeff
Public bug reported:

Didn't notice this yesterday, but left my machine running over night and
this morning when I went to log in, the application bar on the left was
visible. I tried clicking on items on the bar and it launched those
applications. If someone had a privileged script or app pinned to their
task bar, it appears that anyone could launch it. The window isn't
visible however.

[Bug 1792085] Re: MTP not working/very slow on Bionic

2020-01-05 Thread jeff
I was able to fix this on Ubuntu 18.04 (bionic), which comes with
libmtp-common=1.1.13 by installing a newer version of libmtp 1.1.16.
Now Ubuntu transfers huge numbers of songs between my phone and laptop
by simply drag-and-drop in Nautilus.

sudo apt install build-essential pkg-config wget libusb-1.0-0-dev libusb-dev

wget
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/libmtp/libmtp/1.1.16/libmtp-1.1.16.tar.gz
tar xzf libmtp-1.1.16.tar.gz
cd libmtp-1.1.16

./configure
make
sudo make install

I didn't even have to uninstall the old version, and also no need for
android-file-transfer or jmtpfs.

me wonder if the thing is really fixed. From what I understand, it tells
me that the dv1394 device is not to be used in the near future, making
the whole thing break again? Does this bug need to be reopened?

[Bug 132013] gtk+ filechooser should use meta-tracker for searching

2007-08-12 Thread Jeff Fortin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libgtk2.0-0

gtk 2.12 has a search area in the FileChooser.

Since ubuntu 7.10 alpha 4 ships with meta-tracker search and metadata
indexer by default, the GTK file chooser should be using it just like
nautilus uses it.

actually no, I did some more testing, and the feed reader extension is

[Bug 132013] Re: gtk+ filechooser should use meta-tracker for searching

2007-08-20 Thread Jeff Fortin
Nah, it doesn't work, there is something wrong. I use only the packages
coming from gutsy's official repositories (well, main and universe), so
no hacks on my side.

However, when I search for pingouin in t-s-t or tracker-enabled
nautilus, I get two files returned instantly (one .pdf and one .odt).

Trying to search pingouin in the gtk file chooser scratches the hard
drive like mad for a few seconds and returns nothing. Does not sound
like it actually uses tracker in that case.

[Bug 134546] deskbar applet default inclusion in gutsy is a performance regression

2007-08-24 Thread Jeff Fortin
Public bug reported:

from my cold-start testing, deskbar applet, included by default in
gutsy, adds 15 seconds login time. Removing it brings down the login
time a lot, and I beg you to reconsider the inclusion of this applet by

[Bug 129346] Re: Please build and install the new pam module

2007-08-28 Thread Jeff Ferrari
Not sure of where to submit this, but it matches this bug so...

As per whoopie's suggestion for package libpam-gnome-keyring.

I have attached a patch for /etc/pam,d/ to make this work properly in gutzy (as
in work at all). Briefly tested on my own machine:
- gdm login works, and as per documentation creates a keyring called login if
it does not exist. This obviously won't match the default one that is in the
system. Also correctly starts gnome-keyring-daemon
- change password works

Didn't test too much further, but at least my wifi isn't irritating me
as much.

[Bug 40800] Re: HAL blocks suspend

2006-09-18 Thread Jeff Fortin
Hi. I found this bug report while coming from
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=356441 and it seems most
likely that my problem is the same as described here, because I have
that Philips SCB5265SE distributed on an Acer Travelmate 2428 notebook.
I *guess* the firmware is TX11-C, that's what's written on the drive.

Anyhow, what I would like to say is:
- acer provides no firmware
- philips provides no firmware

I have no way of changing the firmware. Now, this is not such a big
issue because I practically never use optical drives, so I just took out
the drive (I will see if that fixes the problem). HOWEVER, I would think
this would be important to be fixed in software, not just assuming that
everyone should upgrade their firmware... Unless I am 100% confident the
dell firmware would work on an acer one. Hmm :|

I attempted to copy them one by one, but Rhythmbox would simply not put
them in a playlist. Looking at their titles and filenames, I noticed
that they were the only files that had either a or a + there.

Yep, it's Dapper. Sorry about not finding that bug report but I should
mention that there was no mention of other special characters being
made okay in the GNOME bug report.

[Bug 61446] Re: [2.0 beta3] Crash when receiving transferred file

2006-09-23 Thread Jeff Greene
Gaim has segfaulted and attempted to dump a core file.
This is a bug in the software and has happened through
no fault of your own.

If you can reproduce the crash, please notify the gaim
developers by reporting a bug at
http://gaim.sourceforge.net/bug.php

Please make sure to specify what you were doing at the time
and post the backtrace from the core file. If you do not know
how to get the backtrace, please read the instructions at
http://gaim.sourceforge.net/gdb.php

If you need further assistance, please IM either SeanEgn or
LSchiere (via AIM). Contact information for Sean and Luke
on other protocols is at
http://gaim.sourceforge.net/contactinfo.php

I find the core dump?

Ok, I found out how it happens. It works if I accept the message within
5-10 seconds, but if I leave the accept dialog up for too long, it
crashes gaim.

[Bug 61446] Re: [2.0 beta3] Crash when receiving transferred file

2006-09-23 Thread Jeff Greene
Attached is a crash log when running it in debug mode.
To repeat the steps for the crash:
1. Ask someone to send you a file.
2. When the file accept/cancel window comes up, just leave it there for 5-10
seconds.
3. Watch it crash.

Note: I am running this on Edgy Knot 3 with gaim 2.0 beta3.1, but I know
it failed in Dapper and I think Windows too.

corrupt.

[Bug 58998] Re: Gaim's tabs don't function like in Gedit/Epiphany/Terminal

2006-09-23 Thread Jeff Greene
The gaim tabs are the same height as gedit, however I did notice that 2
pixels are getting cut off of the [x] button on the gaim tabs. I am
running gaim2.0beta-3.1 on Edgy Knot 3. I think I recall this problem in
Dapper too, however.
