[Bug 357029] [NEW] Changing background in gnome-appearance-properties locks entire desktop for 10 seconds

2009-04-07 Thread Jens Askengren
Public bug reported:

When changing the desktop wallpaper using gnome-appearance-properties the
desktop is frozen for about 10 seconds.
This is a quite fast machine. I'd never expect it to take more than a second or
two.

Is the application scaling down a huge vector image or something?
Could that happen in a separate thread maybe?

[Bug 357029] Re: Changing background in gnome-appearance-properties locks entire desktop for 10 seconds

2009-04-07 Thread Jens Askengren
I'm running GNOME on the Ubuntu Januty beta.

The nautilus desktop is disabled (g-conf key
/apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop), but toggling that setting does
not affect this issue.

The window manager (compiz), the panel and any other running application
freezes for about 10-20 seconds. Keyboard and mouse events seem to be
queued up.

I can do some stracing if that would help.

[Bug 323963] Re: totem-mozilla doesn't play OGG and MP3 files within the web browser

2009-04-08 Thread Jens Askengren
I have all relevant gstreamer plugins installed, but the totem plugin
only register itself for these mime types:

application/x-mplayer2
video/x-ms-asf-plugin
video/x-msvideo
video/x-ms-asf
video/x-ms-wmv
video/x-wmv
video/x-ms-wvx
video/x-ms-wm
video/x-ms-wmp
application/x-ms-wms
application/x-ms-wmp
application/asx
audio/x-ms-wma

So, any object/embed tag that specifies another mime type than those
above won't play (unless handled by another plugin). For example:

object type=video/mpeg data=mymovie.mpg
  embed src=mymovie.mpg type=video/mpeg/embed
/object

[Bug 402159] [NEW] Search should only include results from the current program's documentation

2009-07-21 Thread Jens Askengren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

How to reproduce:

* Open yelp from the help menu of another program, for example gedit.
* Search for print. You will get search results for all documentation that
contains the word print, not just the documentation of gedit. In fact, the
relevant page
(file:/usr/share/gnome/help/gedit/sv/gedit.xml#gedit-printing) is not even
included in the result.

It would make more sense if the search only listed results of the
current application, if yelp was started from the help menu of an

[Bug 383491] [NEW] Can't rip to fat32 filesystem when file name contains question marks

2009-06-04 Thread Jens Askengren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sound-juicer

When trying to rip a file containing a question mark to a fat32 filesystem
(mp3-player) I get the error like Can't open resouce.

Because of the unclear error message, I first thought it was a problem

[Bug 661115] [NEW] Hide unnecessary menu entries by default to save space

2010-10-15 Thread Jens Askengren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

The system menues are very long. It takes time to find the correct menu
item, and the menu does not fit on a netbook display without scrolling.

I sugges that some menu items should be hidden by default when there is
an easy way to access the settings (from a panel icon for example)

Here are some examples:

Bluetooth: The settings is more easily accessed from the icon in the panel
Sound: The settings is more easily accessed from the icon in the panel
Network settings. The settings are more easily accessed from the nm-applet
Chat accounts and About me: Can be accessed from the dreaded chat menu
Language support: Feels like it should be a integrated into the software
sources (?)

This may effect other packages as well.

[Bug 776423] [NEW] The new scrollbar does not allow absolute jumping using middle button

2011-05-03 Thread Jens Askengren
Public bug reported:

In previous versions of Ubuntu I used to be able to jump to a specific
position in a document by just middle clicking anywhere on the
scrollbar. No dragging was needed. With the new scrollbar introduced in
Ubuntu 11.04 is not possible any longer.

I know that this might be considered an esoteric and hard to discover feature.
But I feel that dragging around the thumb for several seconds to find the
correct place in the document causes unnecessary muscle tensions leading to
pain when working for longer times. Also, when working with long documents, the
more comfortable scroll wheel is not fast enough to compete with the other ways
of scrolling.

[Bug 325973] Re: gnome-session keeps respawning nautilus when no desktop is drawed

2009-10-13 Thread Jens Askengren
I turn off desktop because...

 * I practically only use nautilus to copy music files to my mp3 player.
 * I'd like to have my home directory (not Desktop) as Desktop directory in
nautilus, and I have to many files to fit on the screen.
 * I don't do file handling in my home directory all that much, so why should I
have a constantly open file manager that's not even full featured?
 * It's easy to accidentally do bad stuff with your files.
 * I prefer to use the places menu with bookmarks
 * The applications I use have smarter ways to navigate to files relevant to
the task. For example, Ryhtmbox lets you search thousands of music files.
Eclipse lets you find any file in the current project by pressing a shortcut
and type part of the filename.
 * Icons on my pretty background image looks ugly.
