[Desktop-packages] [Bug 980579] [NEW] It's impossible to ignore VPN provided DNS servers
Public bug reported: I have a desktop Precise installation with a normal dnsmasq installed, so I disabled the nm-spawned dnsmasq instance from NetworkManager.conf. I create a VPN connection in Network Manager without specifying any DNS servers. When I connect to it, I get: $ cat /var/run/dnsmasq/resolv.conf nameserver 150.140.1.4 nameserver 150.140.1.25 nameserver 127.0.0.1 nameserver 194.63.238.4 nameserver 8.8.8.8 I want to ignore the first two entries which are provided by my VPN. So I go to the VPN connection editor and I declare DNS=127.0.0.1. But again I get the same /var/run/dnsmasq/resolv.conf, so my DNS server entry there is completely ignored by network-manager and/or resolvconf. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 959037] Re: Don't start local resolver if a DNS server is installed
Since this won't be fixed for Precise from the network-manager side, the dnsmasq package now is broken by default in desktop installations. So I've added the dnsmasq package in the Affects: list, to make it easier for people to locate the cause of the problem so that fewer duplicate bug reports are filed (it's an LTS release, I suppose many people will be bitten by it in the next 5 years). Also, even though it's not the correct place to solve the problem, the dnsmasq.postinst could be temporarily modified to disable the local resolver. I can propose a patch for it if the maintainer is interested. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/959037 Title: Don't start local resolver if a DNS server is installed Status in “dnsmasq” package in Ubuntu: New Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: As described in https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/foundations-p-dns- resolving, network manager now starts a dnsmasq instance for local DNS resolving. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 908508]
(In reply to David Mandelin from comment #95) Landry, it's definitely a maze. Sorting it out proper would be a lot of work so I definitely don't expect you to fix everything as part of this patch. It seems important to make sure ENABLE_ASSEMBLER is consistent, though, so combined with Mike's point about Platform.h not being public, it seems that we shouldn't try to set ENABLE_ASSEMBLER, ENABLE_YARR_JIT or ENABLE_JIT in the Makefile, and we shouldn't use them in public header files. One idea is to create a new thing that is set on the same conditions when ENABLE_ASSEMBLER is set and put that in js-config.h. Then you could use that in jscntxt.h without causing any problems. Then we could use macros to check that the two are consistent on one of the other files, like YarrJIT.cpp. Getting back to that bug.. I'm a bit lost, since ENABLE_JIT, ENABLE_YARR_JIT and ENABLE_ASSEMBLER are #defined in wtf/Platform.h (depending on tons of conditions), and also set in Makefile.in. Is it wise to keep the same conflicting names ? If i add a single variable (say JS_HAS_ASSEMBLER or JS_HAS_JIT.. gah, speak about meaningful names..) set arch-dependant (the ones with yarr jit : arm% sparc %86 x86_64 mips%) in configure.in js-config.h where should that variable be used ? - replace all #ifdef ENABLE_ASSEMBLER/#ifdef ENABLE_JIT/#ifdef ENABLE_YARR_JIT, since they seem to overlap ? - or i should just use it in the chunks i'm #ifdef'ing in my attempts to fix powerpc ? - in the same patch, should i also remove all ENABLE_ASSEMBLER/ENABLE_JIT/ENABLE_YARR_JIT=1 from Makefile.in ? Just askin', before wrapping a patch... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to thunderbird in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/908508 Title: Firefox/Thunderbird 10 FTBFS on powerpc in js/src/yarr/pcre Status in The Mozilla Firefox Browser: In Progress Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in “thunderbird” package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Bug description: Debian has the fix, so I'll add it to the branch and it should work with the next upload. And looking at Makefile.in, the list of archs is really the same as ENABLE_METHODJIT, so i'd be tempted to replace ifeq (,$(filter arm% sparc %86 x86_64 mips%,$(TARGET_CPU))) by ifdef ENABLE_METHODJIT, or even better merge the two blocks with the ENABLE_METHODJIT above. I would suggest making the minimal change that actually works and doesn't make things more confusing. Exactly what that would be, I don't know without trying things out. My *guess* would be that adding JS_ENABLE_JIT to Makefile.in and using it only in the places you need here would be it. I'm not sure exactly what blocks you are talking about in comment 98, but it sounds like a good idea. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 980625] [NEW] Missing compact icon layout option in Nautilus
Public bug reported: Compact icon layout feature was removed in Nautilus 3+. As I understand it's design decision, but there is a problem that it causes if you want to have launchers/icons on desktop. It is not possible to apply compact view or any similar feature which delivers the effect close to original compact layout. This makes nautilus nearly useless file manager for handling the desktop, because launcher/icon labels are wasting too much space and often collide with other launchers/icons sitting next on the desktop. I hope there are still people who use desktop for something more than place for a wallpaper. It seems to be the trend with modern Linux DEs - maybe because it looks better on screenshots. But it is actually completely useless for work and I don't know why a file manager needs to be used for handling a desktop, which can properly show only a wallpaper anyway. ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/980625 Title: Missing compact icon layout option in Nautilus Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Compact icon layout feature was removed in Nautilus 3+. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 883317] Re: 11.10 nm-applet menu cut off at screen edge
This is a bug in unity-panel-service. The last position of a menu was stored and not updated in case a menu changed size. The attached branch has a fix. Note: a similar thing can still happen when the menu is updated after it is popped open. For example, when new wireless connections are found. It's not clear how this case should be handled and it's probably out of scope for this bug. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 914393] Re: software-center crashed with SIGSEGV in _gtk_icon_helper_get_storage_type()
I can reproduce this by opening software-center on a deb and close it exactly at the moment the spinner goes away. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 889411] Re: [Samsung CMC-370] MEZON modem not detected
I tried ubuntu 11.10 32 bit, 64 bit and Linux Mint 64 bit, based on ubuntu 11.10. same problem. the only way to install u200 modem was to shut down network manager. i am not a linux-genius and i can't stand having network problems. it's ok, when bugs are not related to networking, because i can figure out those by myself, using google. but if a problem is related to network and i CAN'T reach google because i have only wimax connection then i have no other option than installing older version of linux, which supports my network device. sorry, too sad for me ;D thank you guys for teaching me how to shut down network manager, that was SO helpful yet, at least until i can install deb files from my hard ; good luck!! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/889411 Title: [Samsung CMC-370] MEZON modem not detected Status in “madwimax” package in Ubuntu: New Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: The SAMSUNG SWC-U200 MEZON USB modem (store link, in Lithuanian: http://www.mezon.lt/isigyk/papildoma-informacija/atnaujinkite-mezon- usb-modemo-tvarkykles/id/712/) is not detected by the most recent version of NetworkManager (trunk version available at ppa:network- manager/trunk on November 12th, 2011) even if the most recent drivers (madwimax_160-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb) are installed. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 979699] Re: Display on external monitor reverts to mirror display on restart and logout
if you are speaking about the login screen it's bug #959592 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/979699 Title: Display on external monitor reverts to mirror display on restart and logout Status in Unity: Invalid Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I'm sorry I don't know what package this is related to. Edit: Thank you Fabio Marconi for identifying the package. My problem is that the system doesn't remember my display configuration when I reboot my netbook. I have an external monitor plugged to my laptop, and I use this monitor as my principal and only display (laptop screen not used). But when I restart my computer, even though the screen stays plugged in, the display goes back to same image on both monitors. I have to use the shortcut Fn + F4 to go back to my preferred configuration every time I boot up my computer. Steps to reproduce: 1. Plug in external monitor with VGA, HDMI port 2. Choose the external monitor as your main and only monitor or as an extended display. 3. Reboot or log off. 4. The display configuration is back to same image on both monitors Expected behaviour: The system should remember the user's favourite display configuration for a better work-flow. A lot of people use their laptop as a desktop with a bigger monitor plugged into it.
