Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-sis

Ubuntu's drivers for SiS video on the Intel D201GLY2 motherboard have
known issues, namely that there is Vertical Noise on the screen.
(It looks like it's displaying an incorrect pixel every time there's a
write to video RAM). It happens on Ubuntu's stock drivers on both
Hardy and Intrepid (haven't tried earlier versions).

Intel has their driver source code available which fixes the issues,
except while it would compile under Hardy, it won't compile under
Intrepid, apparently due to using a different xorg API.

I recently tried switching from Hardy to Intrepid. Before, I was able
to use a binary driver which someone built for Hardy. But on
Intrepid, the binary driver has the wrong ABI version, so it won't
work.

I ended up reverting back to Hardy.

Is there any work going on at making this motherboard work? I briefly
tried porting the code to the new API, but it was too complicated for
me, considering that I know absolutely nothing about how to write xorg
drivers.

This problem is still present in Karmic, even a little worse than
ever.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I have Gutsy running on an INTEL D201GLY with a 1440x900 LCD screen

This Intel motherboard uses an SIS662 chip set with integrated graphics

Installation seemed to work OK except that the graphics is very noisy
and breaks up

I read somewhere that you can get the noise to go away by running

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and selecting Vesa drivers

The noise goes away, but picture is fuzzy because the max resolution is
1024x768

The target resolution of 1440x900 does not appear to be supported

Any ideas?

  I have Gutsy running on an INTEL D201GLY with a 1440x900 LCD screen

  This Intel motherboard uses an SIS662 chip set with integrated
  graphics

  Installation seemed to work OK except that the graphics is very noisy
  and breaks up

  I read somewhere that you can get the noise to go away by running

  sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and selecting Vesa drivers

  The noise goes away, but picture is fuzzy because the max resolution
  is 1024x768

  The target resolution of 1440x900 does not appear to be supported

  Any ideas?

  Apparently this bug was supposed to have been fixed as of gvfs 1.1.1.
  As of 1.1.6-0ubuntu2 on Jaunty I still see the issue.

  Steps
  1. Mount a remote smb fileshare
  2. In the terminal cd to the ~/.gvfs/path/to/mount
  3. touch -d some date foo

  Result:

  touch: settings times of `foo': Operation not supported

  
  Could this be some sort of configuration problem on the samba side, note 
copying files to the samba server works fine for keeping proper dates. This may 
be an Ubuntu specific issue, somehow(?), since upstream claims this issue was 
corrected in 1.1.1, or else upstream didn't actually fix the problem like they 
thought.

  Ubuntu's drivers for SiS video on the Intel D201GLY2 motherboard have
  known issues, namely that there is Vertical Noise on the screen.
  (It looks like it's displaying an incorrect pixel every time there's a
  write to video RAM).  It happens on Ubuntu's stock drivers on both
  Hardy and Intrepid (haven't tried earlier versions).

  Intel has their driver source code available which fixes the issues,
  except while it would compile under Hardy, it won't compile under
  Intrepid, apparently due to using a different xorg API.

  I recently tried switching from Hardy to Intrepid.  Before, I was able
  to use a binary driver which someone built for Hardy.  But on
  Intrepid, the binary driver has the wrong ABI version, so it won't
  work.

  I ended up reverting back to Hardy.

  Is there any work going on at making this motherboard work?  I briefly
  tried porting the code to the new API, but it was too complicated for
  me, considering that I know absolutely nothing about how to write xorg
  drivers.

  This problem is still present in Karmic, even a little worse than
  ever.

Geode driver do not display 1024x600 resolution in (K)UNR Karmic.
Actually, the bug also affects Jaunty, but doesnt affect Intrepid.

I used to use a custom xorg.conf in intrepid, but it doesnt work on
Jaunty or Karmic. In Jaunty and karmic, I could only use 1024x768
whick makes the screen bigger than the real display and is impossible
to open new programs, specially in the menus (they simply disapear in
the bottom of the screen).

Further investigations on other distros made me think this is a
regression from the xserver-xorg-video-geode 2.10.1-2. This bug
affects all drivers from 2.10.1 (which is in Intrepid). In fact,
Debian Lenny (that uses geode 2.10.1-2) works perfectly, VectorLinux
6.0 lite (that uses geode 2.9 - i think), also works. Jaunty (geode
2.11.1-1) and Karmic (2.11.4.1-1) dont work, they only display
1024x768...

Actually, when I use the automatic configuration in Jaunty and Karmic
(with no xorg.conf), the screen really seems to be 1024x768, but when
I use the custom xorg.conf (the same I use in Intrepid), the screen
seems different... like it was 800x768 (I know it's wierd, but it
doesnt seem to be 1024x768 at all - everything is really ugly).

Hope it will work in Karmic in time.

  Ubuntu's drivers for SiS video on the Intel D201GLY2 motherboard have
  known issues, namely that there is Vertical Noise on the screen.
  (It looks like it's displaying an incorrect pixel every time there's a
  write to video RAM).  It happens on Ubuntu's stock drivers on both
  Hardy and Intrepid (haven't tried earlier versions).

  Intel has their driver source code available which fixes the issues,
  except while it would compile under Hardy, it won't compile under
  Intrepid, apparently due to using a different xorg API.

  I recently tried switching from Hardy to Intrepid.  Before, I was able
  to use a binary driver which someone built for Hardy.  But on
  Intrepid, the binary driver has the wrong ABI version, so it won't
  work.

  I ended up reverting back to Hardy.

  Is there any work going on at making this motherboard work?  I briefly
  tried porting the code to the new API, but it was too complicated for
  me, considering that I know absolutely nothing about how to write xorg
  drivers.

  This problem is still present in Karmic, even a little worse than
  ever.

Please consider turning powermizer OFF

This is not a bug report but more of feature request.

I cannot use any nvidia driver newer than 185.18.14 on my Sony Vaio
AR520E with Nvidia 8400M GT. The symptoms are, screen flickering,
artifacts, complete system freeze, etc. It turns out that this is a
well known problem with the latest drivers, a lot of people experience
it. The problem is hardware specific, not OS dependent. The fix for is
to turn powermizer off by creating a file /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf
with the following in it:

options nvidia NVreg_RegistryDwords=PerfLevelSrc=0x

Since Karmic boots into graphical desktop by default, any user whose
h/w is affected by this bug will not be able to get even a usable
login prompt after installing the nvidia driver. The user may not even
be able to fix the problem. In light of that, please consider changing
the installer so that the user gets a choice of turning on powermizer
with a warning that it may make the system unusable. There should also
be a boot-time option to disable powermizer, if X does not stat
properly. Or maybe it is better to turn off powermizer by default with
a warning that turning it on may create problems.

Please consider turning the powermizer feature off, or make it
optional.

  This is likely a dupe of bug #1001007, but apport-collect says it's
  better to file a new bug, so here I go.  If they are a dupe, it may
  not be just video playing that causes it, or just 3D usage, but maybe
  VDPAU or a combination thereof.   I do use 3D compositing with KDM in
  KDE 4.8.3, and I have VDPAU installed.

  I have been running Kubuntu on this Dell XPS M1330 laptop with NVIDIA
  8400M GS since 2008 with no problems.  Suddenly, after upgrading from
  11.10 Oneiric to 12.04 Precise, I am regularly experiencing X hanging
  with 100% CPU.  So far, every time it has happened, it's been while
  watching YouTube videos in Flash in Firefox.  It may be minutes,
  hours, or days between crashes.

  When it happens, sometimes the cursor is movable, and sometimes the
  cursor disappears.  The rest of the screen freezes, but sound
  continues playing.  I can SSH in and see X at 100% CPU.  I cannot
  change VTs.  I can sometimes SAK+K several times to kill X and then
  KDM and X will restart--other times I have to power off.

  I just downgraded to 295.20 to see if the bug exists in this version--
  I've read in some places that people find 295.20 to be stable.  Note
  that even though I am filing this bug and ran apport under 295.20, I
  have experienced the bug in 295.40 and 295.49, the versions in precise
  and precise-updates.

  Again, this never, ever happened in all these years until I upgraded
  from Oneiric to Precise.  Now my laptop is completely unreliable--or,
  at least, I risk a hang and having to kill all processes whenever I
  watch a video.  Not much of an upgrade.  :(

  I don't know what to do now.  If 295.20 is not stable, should I keep
  downgrading?  I assume I'll eventually run into a version that won't
  install on Precise, whether due to kernel incompatibilities or other
  issues.  I don't think downgrading the entire system to Oneiric
  (reinstalling, at that) is a good option, either, as I'll be stuck
  with older versions of other software, including all of KDE.

  My HP laptop hangs after 20 - 30 seconds after X starts. I'm using 
nvidia-current (same with post release updates). It works with driver 173 but 
of course much slower compared to the power of this GPU.
  During the period of the 20  - 30 seconds, I change to VT console (Ctrl - Alt 
- F1) and I can grab some information. From kerl.log I found this:

Even changing the current Wifi connection is impossible, when this
problem occurs. In addition to rebooting a simple logout and login seems

  X doesn't load after fglrx install

Bug description:
  It may be a duplicate but I haven't found anything similar. I am
  reporting here since this is an ubuntu package problem although I have
  tried the official stable and beta releases provided by AMD as well.

  I installed fglrx and then reboot it but the system hangs.

  I also tried using the command aticonfig --initial -f but again no
  effect.

  I entered as root and used startx and here I provide the error log. It
  seems that there is a problem with reading the VBIOS.

Hi all,
I don't know how much time it may take to find why Networkmanager doesn't 
handle open files properly at shutdown, but since my home was also failing 
every time and manual disable networking through NM solved my problem (and 
shutdown is much faster), I added 
nmcli nm enable false|true 
to my stop and start-up scripts.
I wrote this to help others who may also have this problem and don't want to 
manually disable / enable networking everytime.

  1. Format and label a target Ext4 partion using Ubuntu 12.04
  2. Install 64bit 12.10 OS using that target without reformatting it
  3. Shut down 
  4. Boot an alternate copy of Ubuntu
  5. Restart selecting the newly installed OS
  6. Login then shutdown
  6. Boot an alternate copy of Ubuntu
  7.Fsck the newly installed OS allowing corrections to be made

  Each time the the newly installed OS is executed and then shutdown,
  even if execution only consists of logging on, a subsequent fsck will
  FAIL.

  I used Acronis True Image Home 2013 to create an image of the newly
  installed 64-bit Ubuntu 12.10, so I can recreate the symptoms of Ext4
  filesystem corruption 100% of the time by restoring from the image,
  booting, logging on and shutting down.

Just in case, the recommended way to portably import PIL:

What if one doesn't use pulseaudio and/or the device is playing something when 
you try to rmmod snd_ice1712?
It won't work because the module is in use, and if you force with -f, you'll 
probably get a segmentation fault or a hung task timer kernel message.
After that the only way to resume the device will be a reboot.

The issue has to be solved at driver level; userspace tricks (which i
used) are not reliable solutions.

It seems that some resume problems was fixed lately for another similar chip:

I can't right now because my audiophile 2496 is not installed anymore (no free 
pci slots), but maybe a bug filed directly to alsa devs:
https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/ will have more effect.

Bug description:
  I have perfectly fine sound playback from my Audiophile 2496 card on
  initial boot, but every time without fail when I suspend I have no
  audio upon resuming.  When sound is gone after resume, activity can
  still be seen on the VU meters of envy24control when a sound is
  played.  I found and tried a few recommendations online for dealing
  with similar problems, to no avail.  Specifically:

  Running killall pulseaudio does not solve the problem.
  Running sudo alsa force-reload does not solve the problem.
  Logging out and back in does not solve the problem.
  Disabling my onboard Intel HD audio in the BIOS does not solve the problem.
  Adding options snd-ice1712 model=audiophile to the end of my 
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file does not solve the problem.

  The only thing that DOES solve the problem is a full reboot, which
  works every time.

Title:
  NetworkManager falsely reports WPA network out of range

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  On boot with amd64 Broadcom BCM43225, Raring NetworkManager correctly
  detects the network name, then NM falsely reports out of range.
  What NM is trying to do is to connect without using the WPA encryption
  key which it already has.

  This is similar to bug 1097002 except in 1097002 NM doesn't even see
  the hidden network name even though it already has the encryption key
  for that network.

  In syslog below, says has security but secrets are required.  That's
  right, has security, but NM already has the secret encryption key; NM
  is supposed to use the key instead of disconnecting.

  Obviously NM doesn't even look to see it already has the key which it
  does.

  The branch in the NM script that sees secrets are required should go
  right ahead, see that it already has the secrets, and use them.
  NetworkManager either doesn't have this path or is refusing to use it.

  I go on to connect manually with settings  network using the
  encryption key network manager already had and should have used.

  In any case, when NetworkManager finally does ask the kernel to
  connect, the kernel connects just fine.  Not a kernel problem.

  Wrap pg_bench from -contrib

Bug description:
  It seems that PostgreSQL 9.1 (and as it seems older versions too) is
  missing the pgbench binary in its contrib-package.

  The contrib-package explicitly states, that it contains this program:

  $ apt-cache show postgresql-contrib-9.1

pgbench- TPC-B like benchmark
  [...]

  After trying a locate of the binary it seems that it is completely
  missing. I've tested this on my computer(12.04) and the computer of a
  co-worker(10.04) and on both the pgbench binary was missing after
  installing the contrib package.

  I have perfectly fine sound playback from my Audiophile 2496 card on
  initial boot, but every time without fail when I suspend I have no
  audio upon resuming.  When sound is gone after resume, activity can
  still be seen on the VU meters of envy24control when a sound is
  played.  I found and tried a few recommendations online for dealing
  with similar problems, to no avail.  Specifically:

  Running killall pulseaudio does not solve the problem.
  Running sudo alsa force-reload does not solve the problem.
  Logging out and back in does not solve the problem.
  Disabling my onboard Intel HD audio in the BIOS does not solve the problem.
  Adding options snd-ice1712 model=audiophile to the end of my 
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file does not solve the problem.

  The only thing that DOES solve the problem is a full reboot, which
  works every time.

  Kerberos accounts on Ubuntu 12.04.1 can't force password changes via 
unity-greeter.

  [Test Case]
  1. Set up a Kerberos server and client machine (see 
http://bobthegnome.blogspot.co.nz/2012/11/testing-kerberos-in-ubuntu.html)
  2. Log into unity-greeter on client machine
  Expected result:
  Unity Greeter shows appropriate prompts to change password and can log in 
once password changed/
  Observed result:
  Some prompts skipped, password not changed and unable to log in.

  [Regression Potential]
  Potential of breaking other authentication. This has been tested with the 
lightdm regression tests.

  In Ubuntu 12.04, when logging in using the unity greeter in lightdm
  (1.1.9-0ubuntu1) with a user using Kerberos with an expired password,
  the login screen doesn't give the user the appropriate feedback to set
  their new password.  The text console works correctly.  The previous
  LTS used GDM, which behaved correctly.

  The normal prompting for this is:
  Username: cmo-test
  Password:  
  Password expired.  You must change it now.
  Enter new password:  
  Enter it again:  

  Instead, in lightdm, it is:
  Username: cmo-test
  Password: 
  Enter it again: 

  The Password expired message is never shown, and Enter it again is
  shown in the box instead of Enter new password.  If you use lighdm-
  gtk-greeter, you get the password expired message printed under the
  box, but still have the same prompting, never asking for the new
  password.

I regularly connect to a cisco anyconnect vpn using vpnc through the
network manager.  I am often at various different location using wifi,
including connecting via wifi to a cellular hotspot.  Usually, when
connecting to a WIFI connection the MTU value (on the wifi connection)
is 1500.  When connecting to the vpn, the MTU value of the tun0
connection is set automatically and it usually sets itself to something
like 1412.  This works with no problem.

When the wifi connection has a lower MTU value (and the cellular hotspot
usually has an MTU of 1430, as do connections in various coffee shops),
the tun0 connection still sets itself to 1412.  For read-intensive
operations (e.g. accessing websites and downloading pages, pulling from
a subversion repository) there is no apparent problem.  But when
attempting to post to a web page (for instance, writing a bug report in
bugzilla) or commit to a repository over the VPN, the connection will
fail.  The MTU value for a VPN connections seems to want to be 78 less
than the MTU value of the connection that it is working over, and having
MTU greater than this causes the upload failures.

I use the VPN via the network manager (using network-manager-vpnc and
network-manager-vpnc-gnome). I am able to work around the issue by
setting the MTU value of the VPN connection manually from the command
line after connecting with the following command:

sudo ifconfig tun0 mtu 1330

It is tedious to do this each time, but it does allow me to successfully
upload or commit when connected.  (I also find that RDP connections fail
much less often when the MTU is set correctly.)  I should note that I
pick an MTU value that is 100 less than the MTU value of the WIFI
connection--it should be 78 but I opt for the easier math and don't
really notice the difference.

And for those that don't know, you can find the current MTU value of
your connections by issuing the ifconfig command.

If you do not have access to a cellular hotspot or other wifi connection
that has a low MTU value, it is likely you can replicate this issue by
manually setting the primary network connection's MTU value to 1430
(using the above command) though I have not tried to replicate it under
these conditions.

Ideally, the VPN connection would properly calculate an appropriate MTU
value to use with the network adapter it will be communicating over.
Perhaps it is trying that and simply cannot identify the proper
connection--while writing this it occurs to me that the eth0 connection
has an MTU value of 1500 even though I don't have a network cable
plugged in, but lowering the eth0 MTU value had no effect on the tun0
MTU value chosen when I connected to VPN over the WIFI connection.

To replicate the error:
* connect to a wifi connection that gives you an MTU value of 1430
* connect to VPN using vpnc via network manager
* verify that the MTU value of your tun0 connection was set to 1412

I just checked and the new version rewrites  the 
/usr/share/applications/inkscape.desktop 
So you have to re edit it by adding  to the end of the [Drawing Shortcut Group]
Name=No Globel Menu
Exec=env UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=0 inkscape
TargetEnvironment=Unity

I also found I had to re-drag the Icon on to the launch pad of unity!

This is only a quick fix, until unity is fixed it's just a work around I
found.

Finally resolved this issue, at least for my purposes. Folks on the
thread were correct that there was a driver issue but I could not figure
out how to get the intel drivers to load even though they were
installed. The problem was that I had set GRUB to nomodeset to resolve
an earlier issue  (when I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS there was a problem
with the drivers resulting in a blank screen). This must have been
preventing the correct drivers from loading. I tried to restore GRUB but
it kept stalling on boot. I ended up replacing Ubuntu 12.04 with LUbuntu
12.10. Now everything is running smoothly. Videos on XBMC are running
the CPU about 10% and everything looks a lot better (I had to set
resolution to 720p previously).

However, this may not address the underlying driver issue with Ubuntu
12.04 LTS.

I have a file named 
art%3A10.1007%2FBF01034471.pdf,
if I open document Properties (Alt+Return) for it I get
Location: 
file:///home/username/Documents/PDFs/art%253A10.1007%252FBF01034471.pdf.

So there are extra escape sequences for percent sign (I know that %25 is a code 
for %). If I try to 
ls -l /home/username/Documents/PDFs/art%253A10.1007%252FBF01034471.pdf I got 
ls: cannot access 
/home/username/Documents/PDFs/art%253A10.1007%252FBF01034471.pdf: No such file 
or directory.
If i try to navigate to correct file 
/home/username/Documents/PDFs/art%3A10.1007%2FBF01034471.pdf I get no error.

So there is an error in % sign processing in evince.
