IIUC, it was fixed by adding the environment variable workaround to the
.desktop file.

If you start Skype from the dash/menu all should be well. If you start
it from the command line then you're on your own.

This is not ideal.

I think that I was experiencing this problem.  I tried the workarounds
mentioned above, but none of them really worked.  But I do not seem to
be experiencing this issue when I switched to using DVI instead of HDMI.
For what is worth, I am running Xubuntu 14.04 on a Dell Studio-XPS.

Bug description:
  I had an HTPC with Mythbuntu 12.04 installed.  Upon upgrading a new
  behavior that if the TV is power cycled it no longer detects a link
  with the HTPC.

  When this happens I can find in the xorg log that there is an
  accompanying log item:

  [ 39829.509] (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode NULL

  After debugging with NVIDIA at
  https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/729955/linux/tv-stops-being-
  detected/ we've deteremined it's a X client that reacts to the RANDR
  events causing the mode to be set to NULL.

  Working through the list in an Xfce environment, the culprit is
  xfsettingsd.  If xfsettingsd is running, it causes the TV to come up
  in a NULL mode.  If it's killed, it remains in the mode it was
  previously running in.

  
  Until this is fixed, this behavior can be worked around with a simple shell 
script:

I start Sykpe from the Launcher and the sound is broken. If I start it

Similar issue,
nvidia 550ti - gnome ubuntu 14.04 also mint 17
setting tv to off and main monitor on - no change to position on saving in 
either nvidia-settings or display results in both turned on after reboot.
this worked fine previously on mint 16 or ubuntu gnome 13.10

Plus setting importance to low is not very helpful to those who have the
issue, I bet if it affected a developer it would be much higher
importance, every bug is important to those it affects!

There will also be some collaterall damage, e.g. mozvoikko extension
will be deleted and user Firefox profiles, so this rule fix applies only

  I have recommended pre-installed Dell laptops to many new Ubuntu
  users. One of them started to complain a few weeks ago that the start
  page of Firefox is http://www.yahoo.com/?fr=dell_lin-home and it is
  impossible to change.

  Indeed, when I tested to change default search engine or URL of the
  home page the UI of Firefox allows me to do it, but once Firefox is
  restarted all those settings are lost and Yahoo comes back as the
  default search engine and home page URL is set to
  http://www.yahoo.com/?fr=dell_lin-home.

  This is really bad, because the Finnish users in question really have
  no interest in US-centric nonsense entertainment news from Yahoo and
  none of the content is in Finnish.

  I've deactivated the http://dell.archive.canonical.com/updates/
  respository and de-installed the Dell packages that look safe to
  remove, and I did delete ~/.mozilla/firefox to make sure it is really
  a system wide problem that presists. I haven't found out what package
  injects these behaviour in Firefox. What are the options, what can be
  done?

A kinf off dirty work around that a just added. It will not show You're
network icon but well show a menu entry network settings. In the real
base menu. Which after all is the most importatnt. I was also ennoyed
with the missing sound settings. And for both there is no descent gnome
extention to find for gnome 3.10 .

Just add to the file /usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/status/volume.js  The
following adds after line 325

this.menu.addMenuItem(new PopupMenu.PopupSeparatorMenuItem());
this.menu.addSettingsAction(_(Network Settings), 
'gnome-network-panel.desktop');
this.indicators.connect('scroll-event', Lang.bind(this, 
this._onScrollEvent));
this._control.open();

this.menu.addMenuItem(new PopupMenu.PopupSeparatorMenuItem());
this.menu.addSettingsAction(_(Sound Settings), 
'gnome-sound-panel.desktop');
this.indicators.connect('scroll-event', Lang.bind(this,

and before the line containing
this.menu.addMenuItem(this._volumeMenu);

And restart you're pc. Now you will find network settings and sound
settings under the basic menu (where you find the start and stop
commands log outs commnads and so on

I ran into this again when upgrading another system, which didn't have gforth 
installed. So I guess the problem is independent of gforth. 
As before, uninstalling the emacs-related packages and then installing emacs24, 
followed by an install of the other packages worked to solve the problem.

same problem for me on 14.04. After installation i haven't  such
problem, but after last update (i make it last week) the keyboard layout
is set to en. I have only two layouts de and ru. If switch two times the
layout, en is disappears.

Bug description:
  As I can see, evince saves the print options between sessions
  regardless of the printer. I have made two queues for the same printer
  to avoid unneccessary color prints and to easier handle different
  paper in different trays. If I change the printer in the GTK print
  dialog from evince the options of the previously choosen printer still
  are active, makes my two queues needless.

  I think the software should save the options per printer, and
  eventually per document.

29.0.1 fixed the empty printed pages but created another problem.

Steps to reproduce
1. create a new FF profile
2. open http://www.tmoshavim.org.il/uploadimages/2014Temps.pdf
3. print
4. The result - all the hebrew characters are printed as empty squares (the
numeric charecters are printed ok)

This is another Hebrew Text pdf but this one was printed OK.

Installing PDF Viewer 0.8.1334 addon fixes the problem.

After uninstallig or disabling this addon the problem DOES NOT return
(the print is ok).

Fresh install + install of new upgrades (official repositories)
Install amarok 2.8 (including automatic selected necessary packages) out of
the official repositories.

On starting amarok, amarok window appears but freezes almost instantly
(before the usual animation on first start after installation). There is no
reaction by clicking anywhere inside the window.
The window may be maximized, but only the frame maximizes, the content of the
window doesn't get maximized.
The computer can still be used or shut down the usual way when amarok is
hanging that way.
The amarok process doesn't use CPU then. It must be killed to stop.

On a previous install of the same OS (exactly same version) on the
same computer, Amarok started after some trials (I did nothing
special. I had just played an MP3 with Gnome MPlayer before, but I
don't think it was the reason. I shall also say that it first worked
on the day after installation of the OS). Afterwards, amarok always
worked fine.

With Lubuntu 14.04 i386 on this machine, amarok works fine.

This issue seems to have improved, I presume with package updates since
it was first reported. Animations are generally no longer jerky. Soft
and hard reboot are generally no longer required. Keyboard Shortcuts
appear/disappear smoothly. Remaining problems:

* Opening the Dash almost never works. Certainly not the first time or
after having other windows have been open for a while. It behaves almost
as though we have switch to the Dash pane, but it hasn't been rendered.
As a workaround, if I open Dash then trigger Guake, Dash appears (with
Guake behind it).

* Closing or minimising windows generally works, except for the last
window. Closing or minimising the last window fails completely, or
starts the minimise animation but then halts. Either way, despite the
window remaining visible, it is no longer clickable.

Steps to reproduce:

* Minimize current window or alt-tab between windows
* Reveal launcher to click on application
* Click `Super` to bring up Dash
* Hold `Super` to bring up Keyboard Shortcuts

What should happen:

Action completes smoothly and quickly.

What happens instead:

* Action may be slow / animation jerky.
* Action may stall (animation frozen on given frame, e.g. window partially
minimized) - initiating another action cancels first action and second action
may succeed (most often calling Guake with F12 seems to solve the issue)
* Action may freeze - cursor no longer moves - a soft reboot
(Alt+PrtScr+REISUB) usually works, otherwise a hard reboot

Notes:

* Not application specific. Minimizing is reliably slow/stalls with
minimizing Firefox (including 29, I do not have a lot of bookmarks) or Pidgin,
but I use those programs more often.
* I am using an Nvidia Optimus machine with the default Nouveau driver - no
`nvidia-prime`, no Bumblebee. I temporarily installed the latest stable Nvidia
driver (including `nvidia-prime`) and it made no difference.
* I did not experience this issue on the same machine running 13.10 (with
Bumblebee).
* I am running Maximus.

At the risk of just making things worse ...

My €0.02 is that we should stick with level 5 right Control as being
optional. This is a marginal (in terms of percentage of userbase that
will ever see/use it) layout that people have to go out of their way to
use, but still taking away a modifier is a pretty big and surprising
step.

I've got sympathy with the non-breaking-space thing from a strict
technical correctness point of view, however it just can't be essential
for day-to-day usage if Windows requires you to enter it by the Unicode
codepoint. If such a large percentage of the French-speaking world cope
with it, then so can we.

I think Andreas's proposal is the only sensible one. Some people won't
be happy with it, but if this discussion (and that of Bépo) has shown us
anything, it's that you really can't please anyone when dealing with
alternate French keyboard layouts.

  In the fr(oss) keymap, both space and Ctrl + space return the same 
XLookupString, which prevents space from being used in some applications.

  This had been fixed in lucid and maverick, but the patch appears to
  have been misplaced during the (rather major) update from 1.8 to 2.1,
  thus the reports of it regressing in comments #135 and #141, as well
  as dupe bug #938671.

  [Development Fix]
  Patch 128_fix_oss_ctrl_space_accelerator.patch fixed this problem in lucid 
and maverick, but was dropped in natty when we updated to upstream 
xkeyboard-config 2.1.  However, the patch was also sent upstream and accepted 
there.  So for quantal a cherrypick of that commit was backported.

  [Stable Fix]
  Since currently quantal is shipping the same xkeyboard-config version as 
precise, we can carry the same patch there as well.

  [Test Case]
  1. Set keyboard to fr(oss).  (Note due to unrelated bug, you need to do this 
in your /etc/defaults/keyboard config file.)
  2. Start rhythmbox
  3. Do a song search
  4. Type in a search term that includes a space character

  Broken Behavior:  Space triggers the play/pause function in rhythmbox
  Fixed Behavior:  A space character is inserted

  [Regression Potential]
  The patch is one we carried in lucid and maverick (when rhythmbox was the 
default music player IIRC), and has been upstream for a while.  So I think it 
is a safe change.

  Actually, I'm surprised there have not been more complaints about it
  lately.  But during the interim we'd switched to banshee so perhaps
  users didn't notice it.

  I tried to search for The Do in the search bar, but the space bar didn't 
write a space. Instead, it played the currently selected song (space is the

Bug description:
  The number of messages waiting is displayed in the thunderbird icon in
  my unity launcher, which is great. Normally, as I read the messages,
  this number decrements and then it disappears once they have all been
  read.

  However, if there are messages waiting when I first launch
  thunderbird, the number displayed in the icon remains fixed as I read
  them, until new messages arrive.

  Is this perhaps a dbus or unity issue instead? The same thing seems to
  be true for the number of events awaiting attention in skype - if
  there are events when I launch it, viewing the events doesn't reset
  the counter.

  When the entry for the new mail (there may be multiple entries per
  each mail folder with new email) is clicked, then Thunderbird is
  opened with that folder. In that moment, both the Unity Thunderbird
  icon overlay and the top bar entry are updated to the actual count of
  new emails. However, when I just use Thunderbird to read email, the
  icon overlay and top bar are not updated. They always reflect the
  number of new mails since either the start of the session, or since I
  last clicked the top bar menu entry.

Bug description:
  The thunderbird launcher icon shows a seemingly-arbitrary number of
  unread messages. My inbox currently has 7 unread messages, and I have
  at least 500 unread messages in other folders according to the
  thunderbird UI. However the launcher icon currently shows there are 42
  unread messages. The number in the launcher icon does fluctuate, and
  it usually decrements when I read a message. It's never been correct
  about the number of unread messages, though.

  The Mail indicator in the panel also has a list of folders with unread
  messages, and a count of the number of unread messages in each of
  those folders. The unread counts in the indicator's listing are also
  inaccurate, and the sum of the unread messages in the indicator does
  not match the number of unread messages in the launcher icon.

  Thunderbird is configured for a pair of IMAP accounts. Each account
  has a number of folders and subfolders.

  If Thunderbird has a new message in Inbox but another folder is open
  at the time, both the Messaging menu indicator and the counter on the
  window show the message as unread, but will not deactivate if the
  folder is switched and the message read. The only way to get rid of
  them is to explicitly click the folder name in Messaging menu.

  How to reproduce:
  1. Open Thunderbird, switch to any folder other than Inbox.
  2. Send an e-mail to yourself, wait until it arrives in Inbox.
  3. Switch to Inbox, select the message just arrived so it is marked as read.
  4. Observe Messaging menu and Thunderbird window icon.

  Expected results:
  After the message is read, Messaging menu is inactive, and Thunderbird window 
icon has no unread message count.

  Actual results:
  Messaging menu is still active (blue), shows 1 unread message in Inbox; 
Thunderbird window icon shows 1 unread message as well.

  In Trusty, Unity window decorator  compiz doesn't have proper support

  2. It appears shadow-less  border-less.

  3.  In gnome-tweak-tool, when toggling among tabs, the middle section
  gets transparent! (Screenshot attached).

  It seems applications are drawn without any decoration properly
  applied on them.It also occurs with themes which do have headerbar
  support. Other desktop-shells based on compiz are affected as
  well...for example, compiz session for Gnome-Flashback.

  The launcher and indicator menu display a number of unread messages.
  This is very often (but not always) incorrect. See the attached image
  for an example. There are no unread messages anywhere in my
  Thunderbird folders, but the launcher icon shows 199. The indicator
  menu does the same.

  There are several bugs with incorrect number being displayed on them.
  This is different to all of them.

  Bug 850229 claims to have been fixed in oneiric. This still happens on
  quantal.

  Bug 856642 is about the launcher showing too small a number (new as
  opposed to unread). In this bug the number is shown even if all
  messages are read.

  Bug 848774 seems to be consistent. This bug happens quite often but
  not all the time. Otherwise the descriptions are very similar.

  In Ubuntu 13.04, the keyboard backlight does not work in Samsung
  Series 9 NP900X4C.

  Adding the FN key mappings as described in
  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SamsungSeries9 does show information
  in the notification area when pressing the keyboard backlight's + and
  - buttons, but:

  1) The notification always identifies the backlight as full max
  2) It has no effect on the backlight - it's always off

  When I first installed Ubuntu on this machine (12.10), even though the
  fn keys never worked I did have intermitent backlight functionality -
  the light sensor would sometimes work and I'd see light in the
  keyboard.

  I dual boot in Windows 8 and backlighting works there, so this is not
  a hardware issue.

AFAIK compilers are not clever enough to avoid running a constructor for this
at startup, and so this should be avoided (comment 12 and comment 14).  It
will be used soon after startup anyway, but I don't know the details on how
the different reads benefit from read-ahead.  There are people who have worked
hard to remove similar variables, so let's not add one here.  I guess
either StaticRefPtr or manual ref counting can be used.

Rhythmbox has been updated but the problem persists. I can confirm what
DrX found out: Other tools like gtkpod or Banshee behave in the same
way. CopyTrans Manager in a VMWare (Windows 7) is working perfectly on
the same Ubuntu 14.04. workstation. I also installed Linux Mint 16
(which is based on Ubuntu 13.10.) in a VMWare and everything works fine.
Obviously it's not a bug in rhythmbox but a bug in some library/driver
that is used to connect the device. And obviously the bug was introduced
in Ubuntu 14.04.

  I'm used to the tilde (~) key being a dead key that can be used to
  type ñ or Ĩ. This changed with a recent update where it stopped
  connecting to the next typed character. After considerable effort I
  found Deutsch (veraltet) ie. German (deprecated).

  There used to be a way to tweak layout settings which also disappeared
  so there's no way for me to change this behavior.

  libgrip has some troubles when accessing a Ubuntu 12.04 desktop via
  x2go, which uses libnx-x11.

  The applications (evince and eog) start up very slowly. It takes about
  50 seconds to open a 900k pdf document.

  The following output makes me think that the problem is libgrip-
  related. A way to avoid the issue is running evince in preview mode
  (-w).

  Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
* Don't run the lldb tests on armhf (time out on the buildd).
* Disable the lldb build for AArch64.
  These changes are already in Debian.

  Other Ubuntu delta:
    * Backport upstream patch to not try to handle [SU]MUL_LOHI nodes on
  aarch64, needed to build ghc.
    * Unconditionally link lldb with -latomic.
    * Rebuild for ocaml-4.01.
    * Bring over Ubuntu changes from 3.3:
  - Revert to using the static copy of libjsoncpp, since the shared
    library lacks sane versioning, and this is only a few thousand
    lines of cargo-culted code from a reasonably stagnant upstream.
  - Drop lcov build-dep to avoid pulling it into main, due to its
    being fundamentally incompatibe with our newer GCC versions.
    * Build-depend on gcc-multilib on amd64 and i386.

Bug description:
  On xubuntu 14.04 the package gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg_0.10.13-5_amd64.deb is not 
available,
  so I could not use mp4 h264 files in html5 tags. I used the .deb package from 
ubuntu 13.10 and after an apt-get -f install everything works fine.
  I don't know why the gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg package is not available anymore, 
it looks like firefox could use gstreamer1.0-libav. I don't know if the h264 
decoder is enabled in gstreamer1.0-libav package.

  I hope that this bug report will help people get html5 video working.

  Tested with firefox 25 and 29.

Hello,
If I am not mistaken i was affected by the same bug (see attached stack trace).
Updating to the -proposed repository fixes the segmentation fault. Simple-scan 
now runs normally with my HP scanjet G2410.

Huh, I'm not sure what on earth you are doing, but clearly the build
process doesn't always fail if compare-locales is not in the path before
building, otherwise we wouldn't be able to build it in the archive and
the various PPA's, every day. And it doesn't leave any files outside of
the build directory here either.

You are doing something wrong or there's something wrong with your build
environment

  1. Use apt-get build-dep firefox to obtain build dependencies
  2. Use apt-get sources firefox to obtain the firefox package 
(firefox_29.0+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.2).
  3. Run dpkg-buildpackage -b -us -uc -j12 to build the package

  During the build process the following python packages are installed to the 
default location ($HOME/py-bin and $HOME/py-lib):
  compare-dirs
  compare-locales
  easy_install
  pip

  These packages depend on the virtualenv python interpreter located at
  firefox-29.0+build1/obj-x86_64-linux-gnu/_virtualenv/bin/python and do
  not work if the firefox package source is later deleted.

  The build process for this package should be modified to prevent these
  external side effects by overriding the location of py-bin and py-lib
  to be within the source directory.

  The build process itself always fails if compare-locales is not in
  the path before building (#1320004), but this can be resolved by
  installing it to a py-bin directory within the source directory at the
  start of the build process (instead of somewhere in the middle of it).

I've already tried ssh://user:password@server (in the Search box,
replacing user, password  server appropriately) but it did nothing.
'Browse Network' looks like it's a Samba facility, which I don't want to
use as all my boxes are Ubuntu.

When I lock the screen (strg-alt-l) or the sreensaver locked the screen 
atomatically, I can't unlock the the screen by typing in the correct password. 
The Screensaver reports 'password not correct'.
I can only lock in to the existing session by chosing 'change user' and doing 
the lock in from there.
I'm using ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
The File shadow has the permissions witch are mentioned in BUG #34775. But the 
file is not in /etc/shadow, that does not exist. It is directly in /etc.

I found the solution in 'Ask Ubuntu'. sshfs package is not automatically
installed on a clean Trusty install. It should be automatically
installed. 'sudo apt-get install sshfs'  restart allows (e.g.
ssh://192.168.1.4) entry into Server Address box of 'Connect to Server'
dialog.

  At Nautilus, when we click on File  New Document the only option
  showed is Empty Document, ie, it does not show the option to create
  new files based on the templates at $HOME/Templates. Because of that,
  one can not use HUD to create a new document based on his/her
  templates.

  I have reported upstream

  The behavior is different if I right click on an empty space and select New
  Document. Then my templates are showed.

  cann't unlock screensaver

Bug description:
  When I lock the screen (strg-alt-l) or the sreensaver locked the screen 
atomatically, I can't unlock the the screen by typing in the correct password. 
The Screensaver reports 'password not correct'.
  I can only lock in to the existing session by chosing 'change user' and doing 
the lock in from there.
  I'm using ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
  The File shadow has the permissions witch are mentioned in BUG #34775. But 
the file is not in /etc/shadow, that does not exist. It is directly in /etc.

  I unintentionally changed permissions of the files in root directory.
  Hence I'm seeing login issues.

  I'm Unable to login from 'ctrl+alt+l' or Screen lock after normal 'Power 
Save'. On entering the correct password the machine fails to unlock.
  I Need to click 'Switch User'  then the screen takes to main login screen, 
where on entering the password, the login succeeds
