Title:
Mouse pointer invisible after upgrade to Ubuntu 14.10

Status in gnome-settings-daemon package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in gnome-settings-daemon package in Debian:
  New

Bug description:
After upgrading from Xubuntu 14.04 to 14.10, the mouse pointer became
invisible AFTER the user session start. This is why it looks like an
XFCE problem (although it might be another problem with Xorg or the
  graphics stack triggered by XFCE).

The mouse works perfectly in the login page, and when logging in with
an user, it works fine when the XFCE logo is shown while starting the
session, but afterwards, a graphics mode seems to change (I can see
some activity in Xorg.log) and after that I can't see the mouse
pointer anymore. The mouse works, the pointer is just invisible. I can
even use it through VNC, I can see the VNC client showing the pointer
  perfectly too.

This is rendering my computer virtually unusable.

  * Steps to reproduce:
Install JRE, for example Oracle Java7
In File manager (nautilus) click on Jar file, for example download
Minecraft.jar file from
https://s3.amazonaws.com/Minecraft.Download/launcher/Minecraft.jar

  Actual result:
minecraft.jar file is opened in file-roller instead of Java Runtime
Environment (but Java Runtime Environment can be choosed by right-click->Open
With->Java7 Runtime)

  Expected result:
.jar file should be opened in Java Runtime

  * Regression potential:
verify that clicking on java types in nautilus works as it should

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 859560] Re: Gedit line number margin doesn't scale with font size

Title:
Gedit line number margin doesn't scale with font size

Status in Light-Weight Text Editor for Gnome:
  Invalid
Status in gedit package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Machine: 64bit Ubuntu Ocelot with all updates applied as of
  26/09/2011.

The width of the Gedit line number margin (enabled in preferences)
doesn't scale with the font size. I am visually impaired and thus have
my gedit font size set to 16. However when I do this and press enter a
few times (so I have more than 9 lines in a file) the margin isn't
expanded to fit the new two digit number. When we have more than 99
lines (three digits), the margin scales correctly once more.

This happens on a new setup with fresh configuration files.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1). Open gedit
2). Change font size to 16 (probably also has issues at other sizes too).
3). Make more than 9 lines in the file.

  device name: m75
  channel: ubuntu-touch/vivid-proposed
  last update: 2015-03-24 13:57:03

After libc 2.21 landed, pulsesink fails constantly when pausing or
  seeking the active pipeline.

  Abort message:
  Assertion 'pthread_mutex_unlock(&m->mutex) == 0' failed at
pulsecore/mutex-posix.c:118, function pa_mutex_unlock(). Aborting.

This is basically happens when it tries to unlock a mutex that is
  already unlocked.

This issue doesn't happen with libc 2.19.

  To reproduce the issue:
  GST_DEBUG=*pulse*:5 gst-launch-1.0 playbin uri=file:///tmp/foobar.mp3

Then when playing, just hit control+c, which will then pause the
pipeline, causing the crash. The crash happens with most of the times
you pause or seek the pipeline.

I've had this problem with empathy for a long time. Please fix. This is
a key feature of Ubuntu and it just doesn't work. Keeping an account

Status in gnome-settings-daemon package in Debian:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1436330] [NEW] Network Manager doesn't set metric for local networks any more, causing connection issues

2015-03-25 Thread Jason Straight
Public bug reported:

With Vivid, having two connections to the same network subnet is
unstable due to missing metrics for local networks.

Example:

Being connected to 192.168.1.0/24 via both wired and wireless will cause
connectivity issues as sent packets hop between the two interfaces.

It used to be that this wasn't an issue. I would go between work and
home and plug in and my machine would automatically connect to wireless
and it would use the lower metric ethernet interface for all
communications, while the wlan interface would remain connected but
unused.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 859560] Re: Gedit line number margin doesn't scale with font size

2015-03-25 Thread Morgane Roy
It seems that this bug has been fixed. I am currently using Gedit 3.1O.4

this bug be updated ?

2015-03-25 Thread Ricardo Salveti
So this issue is a combination of the following patches:
https://sourceware.org/git/?p=glibc.git;a=commit;h=47c5adebd2c864a098c3af66e61e1147dc3cf0b4
https://sourceware.org/git/?p=glibc.git;a=commit;h=03d41216fe09fc71a2750946af8fe2892bf4feb5

Basically the main problem is that futex_atomic_cmpxchg_inatomic got
disabled, even though we have that well supported in our kernels.

I just did another build (in canonical-arm-dev) including the patch bellow, and
with that I'm unable to reproduce this bug:

After libc 2.21 landed, pulsesink fails constantly when pausing or
  seeking the active pipeline.

  Abort message:
  Assertion 'pthread_mutex_unlock(&m->mutex) == 0' failed at
pulsecore/mutex-posix.c:118, function pa_mutex_unlock(). Aborting.

This is basically happens when it tries to unlock a mutex that is
  already unlocked.

This issue doesn't happen with libc 2.19.

  To reproduce the issue:
  GST_DEBUG=*pulse*:5 gst-launch-1.0 playbin uri=file:///tmp/foobar.mp3

Then when playing, just hit control+c, which will then pause the
pipeline, causing the crash. The crash happens with most of the times

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1414706] Re: [20ALCTO1WW, Realtek ALC292, Black Mic, Left][Lenovo ThinkPad X240] external mic has no sound at all

2015-03-25 Thread Taihsiang Ho
I tried the configuration similar to the one in comment 29 on CID 201307-14019,
and it could reproduce this bug.

It is:
14.04.1 on 201307-14019
BIOS VERSION: GIET60WW (2.10 )
oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms 0.201503250301~ubuntu14.04.1
3.13.0-46-generic #79-Ubuntu SMP Tue Mar 10 20:06:50 UTC 2015

The relevant alsa-info log dumped when recording audio could be found in the
attachment
comment39.tar.gz/comment39-3.13.46-hdadkms-GIET60WW-coef-on

Besides, I tested the other configuration.
Their alsa-info log dumped when recording audio could be found in
comment39.tar.gz as well.
They are
3.13.0-46 with/without hda dkms, bios GIET60WW (2.10 )
3.13.0-48 with/without hda dkms, bios GIET60WW (2.10 )
and all of them could reproduce this issue.

when dumping alsa-info, the dump_coef was on if available.

Please try to fix that (e g by running
"alsamixer -D hw:PCH" in a terminal) and see if that solves the problem.
Would you like to continue troubleshooting anyway?

However, the System Settings... -> Sound UI shows the mic as not
muted. When I tried running the alsamixer command, I saw mic and mic-
boost were both showing 0; I cranked them up to 100, but it made no
difference. I also tried re-running this command with the mic/mic-
boost still set to 100 and it threw the same error.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1435764] Re: FFe UI exception for LibreOffice Breeze Icons

2015-03-25 Thread Björn Michaelsen
So the patch looks innocent enough. I assume this is for LibreOffice
4.4/vivid -- not earlier, right? And LibreOffice 4.5/w-series has the
patch upstream already.

And just to clarify: This is just about this small patch, you are fine
with the media (the icons themselves) as they are on the 4.4 upstream
branch/release tarballs?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1432843] Re: Lubuntu failed to boot

2015-03-25 Thread Henk Terhell
Not only this problem, but I also crashed a third L15.04 installation
(i386) after update. This update causes the system not being able to
restart or shut off, not even in terminal mode with commands halt,
shutdown or poweroff. After a hardware shutdown the system no longer
boots upon selection in grub.

Title:
  hp photosmart 7450 communication problems.

Status in HP Linux Imaging and Printing:
  New
Status in hplip package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
My HP photosmart 7450 printer has been showing some communication problems
since using Hardy. Prior to this, I've been running Debian stable on exactly
the same hardware without any printer problems. The symptoms are:
printer is detected as photosmart 7400 & appears to install correctly. I can
sometimes initially print one or two pages, then it locks up completely, I get
a pop-up notice on the top panel about printer supplies low (although it
isn't). At this point, the printer firmware appears to have hung - it doesn't
respond to front-panel button presses & the only way to get it to respond is to
pull the power supply for a few seconds. On reconnecting, it sometimes prints,
sometimes doesn't.
I've tried uninstalling the hplip package and installing the latest version
(2.8.5) from the hp website. It didn't make any difference, the symptoms are
unchanged.

It looks like there's another user with the same problem:

Title:
Thunderbird's messaging menu highlight helps some people but not many

Status in thunderbird package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
By default, when new emails arrive in Thunderbird, they *sometimes* highlight
the messaging menu. As described by Chris Coulson, a message highlights the
menu if:
"- The message is sent with high-priority OR
  - The message is flagged (by a filter) OR
  - The message is addressed directly to the recipient (eg, not CC) AND the
message is not low prioirty AND the message wasn't automated AND the message is
not from a mailing list."

This is good behavior for some people, but not for others, e.g. ViViD:
"In my personal case, no message received through Thunderbird lacks
importance. Since I hide the launcher by default, many mails go
unnoticed for a time and I find myself randomly mousing over the
  launcher to check mails."

To suit more people, Thunderbird should contain a setting for which
messages highlight the messaging menu. One option should be to
highlight messages if they are from one of your contacts.

This setting needs design, and then proposing (and maybe implementing)
  upstream.

If you have a user account with a password, someone with physical

  password.

This is an intractable problem. For example, from Microsoft's "10
immutable laws of security": "If a bad guy has unrestricted physical
access to your computer, it's not your computer anymore".

However, probably it isn't obvious to a non-professional that a
password alone isn't enough to secure their stuff.

So perhaps, wherever Ubuntu lets you set a password (Ubiquity, System
Settings "User Accounts"), it should contain a brief (very brief)
explanation of this. Something like: "A password doesn’t protect
against someone with physical access to the computer."

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1431058] Re: Stable Release Update to provide possiblity of automatically reporting crashes

2015-03-25 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package apport - 2.14.1-0ubuntu3.8

---
apport (2.14.1-0ubuntu3.8) trusty-proposed; urgency=medium

  * Backport changes from 14.10 to ensure that automatic crash reporting
works. (LP: #1431058)
- Refactor whoopsie-upload-all to behave more reliably in case of
  overlapping crash processing.
- debian/apport-noui.upstart: refactor to make this an 'instance' job for
each incoming .crash file, and drop the racy handling of non-root .crash
files (as well as the unnecessary 'env MATCH' line).
- debian/apport-noui.upstart: remove early exit
- debian/apport-noui.dirs: create /var/lib/apport
- apport-noui: make the package installation automatically enable
autosubmission, and update the package description accordingly.

  4) pkill -11 sleep
  5) observe /var/crash/_bin_sleep.crash file
  6) wait a wee bit
  7) observe /var/crash/_bin_sleep.upload and .uploaded are created

The version of apport in Ubuntu 14.04 is missing a few changes that
would allow users to install apport-noui and allow crash reports to be
submitted automatically from systems with it installed. The changes
  are the following:

    * debian/apport-noui.upstart: remove early exit (LP: #1235436)
    * debian/apport-noui.dirs: create /var/lib/apport (LP: #1235436)
    * data/whoopsie-upload-all: backport utopic version of it
    * apport-noui: make the package installation automatically enable
autosubmission, and update the package description accordingly.
  LP: #1351137.

The changes to whoopsie-upload-all can be found in this revision
  (http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-
dev/ubuntu/vivid/apport/ubuntu/revision/2351) and they were fixing LP:
#1354318. It would be useful if users of 14.04 could install apport-
noui and have crash reports automatically submitted for them.

Nautilus gives me an "Error while moving."-message and describes it
with "There was an error reading the folder [...].“. "Show more

Nautilus creates a folder (sic!) with the exact name as the file i
want to move. So if i try to move the file "foo.baz" it creates the
_folder_ "foo.baz" in my target smb share.

Copying files works without any problems as far as i can see. On my
virtualbox win7 moving works flawlessly. So I think it is a problem in

The ubiquity window size display in HiDPI screens is small.

The new gSettings to scale GTK applications (and their corresponding
settings in System Settings) work great, but this does not help for
the account creation (first boot) for users buying a pre-install
  system.

We would need changes in Ubiquity to:

   * Probe the monitor to get resolution information
   * Re-scale the ubiquity window using the corresponding gsetting
(com.ubuntu.user-interface scale-factor) based on resolution

We would need the changes to be backported to Trusty as well.

  [Test Case]
  1. Install image on a system with HiDPI panel
  2. Check the ubiquity window size displayed on screen

  Expected Result:
The window size should be reasonable for user to read the content.

  Actual Result:
The window size is small and user is hard to read the content.

Just to advise, your laptop model is already in the Bug Description.

Ok. Does the issue occur in http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-
live/current/ ?

>"I didn't try the "unverified more recent" Nvidia one."

It's not necessary to test this, as we've already narrowed down where
the issue is.

Also, this report is scoped to the double mouse cursor issue, not how your
touchpad doesn't work. If you have an issue with your touchpad, it would help
immensely if you filed a new report via a terminal:

I've tried making a config file but it didn't work.
I hope this will be fixed/added soon becasue 9/10 of the time im in a building
with peap. And in my opinion a smartphone is kind of useless without internet.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1436211] [NEW] Remove GTK3 from phone images

2015-03-25 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Public bug reported:

This is a wishlist bug to eventually remove GTK3 from Ubuntu Phone
images to save some space.

-- gnome-control-center-signon --
Since libaccount-plugin-1.0-0 is included on Ubuntu Phone images, would it be
possible to refactor it so that it would not depend on GTK3 bringing it on the
images?

-- address-book-service --
address-book-service depends on evolution-data-server, which depends on GTK3.
evolution-data-server further depends on libgweather-3-6 and libgcr-ui-3-1
which both directly depend on GTK3 too.

Would it be possible to work with libfolks-eds25 and other libraries
alone? Or would it be possible to modify evolution-data-server building
to not depend on GTK3 since we're not using the toolkit anyway?

-- themes (unity-asset-pool, adwaita-icon-theme...) --

humanity-icon-theme, ubuntu-mono and unity-asset-pool depend on adwaita-
icon-theme. adwaita-icon-theme directly depends on GTK3.

-- ubuntu-system-settings --

ubuntu-system-settings depends on libtimezonemap1 which directly depends
on GTK3. Maybe the library could be made not to depend on GTK3?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1436207] [NEW] firefox stops reading syspref.js after encountering non-existent setting

2015-03-25 Thread Jan Groenewald
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 14.04 up to date 64bit, firefox 36

We had a non-existent setting in /etc/firefox/syspref.js. Firefox
ignored the rest of the file until we commented it out. This is probably
a bug. (FYI, this is a computer lab environment with network filesystem
and disk space quotas.)

// Mandatory settings
lockPref("browser.cache.disk.capacity", 0);
//lockpref("browser.cache.disk.smart_size_cached_value", 0); // non-existent
settings cause firefox to stop reading the rest of this file zomgwtfbbq
lockPref("browser.cache.disk.smart_size.enabled", false);
lockPref("browser.cache.disk.enable", false);
lockPref("browser.cache.offline.enable", false);

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1432843] Re: Lubuntu failed to boot

2015-03-25 Thread Henk Terhell
I tried version 20150324.1 of i386 last night and again this failed to install.
I was able to install amd64 version of 20150324 on another PC but after
installation loading takes 2 minutes until login menu appears. In recovery
mode it shows: "a start up job is running for dev-disk".

note about #3 above

it is not the package's 'changelog' indeed, but its 'description' that
needs to be more detailed.

Thanks for explanation
but the journalctl log is confusing and may catch also some more users attention

At least that iucode-tool package changelog might explain that the
'date' and 'rev' shown in the journalctl log is the most recent revision
available for that cpu model
