[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1674121] Re: "Restore" asks for cryptic authentication to run /bin/sh as superuser

2017-08-19 Thread Michael Terry
Yes, Launchpad picked the wrong description. Here is the one that fixed
it:

deja-dup (35.4-0ubuntu1) artful; urgency=medium

  * New upstream release
- Adds support for GNOME Online Accounts
- Improves dynamic installation support for backend dependencies
- Fixes status icon in non-GNOME desktops (LP: #1592480)
- Improves sudo prompt when restoring outside HOME (LP: #1674121)
- Fixes password prompt loop with a bad gpg config (LP: #1710309)
- Fixes vertical size of backup detail output pane (LP: #1710491)
  * debian/rules:
- Tell deja-dup which packages to install for the various backends
  * debian/control.in:
- Update dependencies
- Drop deja-dup-backend-* meta packages, they are no longer needed
  * debian/patches/install-pygi.patch:
- Drop, no longer needed

When Deja Dup is starting the icons in the panel are moved and I can see a
gap but no deja dup icon.
To show this icon when the job is running is very helpful. I know that early
version had this feature.

Status in deja-dup package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Attempting to create a full backup to a SMB NAS, succeeds if backup is
set to unencrypted. Fails if password is specified.

Symptom: deja-dup loops endlessly through "scanning" -> "encryption
password needed" -> "require password?" and round and round.

Possibly related to recent gnupg options changes? Creating a GPG key
pair for enigmail to use was the last major change i made to my set-up
since the last time these back-ups succeeded. If that's the cause,
i'll be darned if i can work out what to revert where.

  Release:Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS
  deja-dup34.2-0ubuntu1.1
  duplicity 0.7.06-2ubuntu2

  Reproduction Steps:

  * Add the line "trust-model tofu+pgp" to the end of your gpg.conf (probably
~/.gnupg/gpg.conf)
  * Try an encrypted backup of any data to any destination.

Bug description:
I am trying to restore a full backup to an external hard drive.
After 20 minutes or so, a cryptic gui popup arises which says that "some
process" wants sudo authentication to run /bin/sh

It is surely a bug to generate such a vague request for sudo use.

I note it has been this way since 2013
  (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/deja-dup/+bug/1079553 which
has been unaddressed, so the outcome of denying this request is still
a great pain), but I am pointing out that this kind of permission
request is itself a bug, if not a security risk because it teaches
users to give that kind of permission to an unknown script.

   - Press 7 and Enter. Screen should show 7 = 7, input field should show 7.
   - Press left arrow and type 12, then the right arrow and type +7. Input
field should show 127+7.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1711856] Re: Help! Mouse moves but none of the buttons work!

2017-08-19 Thread Nima Dolatabadi
** Description changed:

- www
+ I start it up and everything goes fine for maybe the first two minutes of
whatever I'm doing.
+ then all of a sudden I can't click anything. Also I want to close a window,
move the cursor over the X, going backward and forward with my mouse buttons
but I can't. I can push right click, try to kill the window but then I can't
confirm because I can't click 'yes.' I can't even power down normally because I
can't click 'yes' when the duologue appears. Very annoying.
+ when I had windows 7 and 8 it happened and with so much searches that I did
nothing worked so I did not use my gaming mouse for months and after a long
time I did plug in my mouse and there was no problem.
+ rightnow I have Ubuntu 14.04 for one year and this problem happened again.
+ I have "MSI Gaming Mouse P/n s12-0400690-AA3"

Title:
120sec delay during shutdown or reboot with still mounted cifs (via
  Wifi)

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Using Ubuntu 16.04 Desktop with Unity, used the same approach in 14.04
  with no issue.

I prepare for mounting with the following entry in /etc/fstab my
  Synology NAS :

  //192.168.178.61/data /media/server/server_data cifs

users,uid=1000,gid=1000,username=x,passwd=xx,iocharset=utf8,sec=ntlm,noauto,_netdev
  0

After login to unity, I mount it with a bash-script (mount -a) which
  is called from ~/.config/autostart/myMounts.desktop

Doing this, and shuting down or rebooting lead into a very delayed
shutdown (round about 2 minutes) Pressing ESC Key, showed that the
process stops at the command "umount /media/server ..."

I have not tested if this also occurs when I am connected via
ethernet. I think it is because the (Wifi)Network is already disabled
  prior all umounts are done.

This issue happens even if I type in a shutdown command into a
Terminal or if I choose shutdown form the menue, also if I use the
  power-button.

Failure can be avoided if I umount the network-drives manually
  previouse to reboot.

Interim solution was, to create an alias for "shutdown" like "sh
  /path/to/umount/script.sh && shutdown" in /etc/bash.bashrc.local.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1711851] [NEW] bad default setting

2017-08-19 Thread Tim Dowd
Public bug reported:

I'm using the pre-release version of artful 17.10 and network manager
1.8.2-1ubuntu2 Much like in Debian Stretch, network-manager is set to
use the random mac address feature of network manager, which doesn't
allow certain wifi cards/ routers to work together. See Debian bug
836351. I think this feature should be disabled on a live cd, because
it isn't fixable during an install and it might cause a user just to
give up and not install Ubuntu.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Without these fixes, copying any more than a few files in several file
managers including but not limited to Nautilus and Caja either completely
freezes up the file manager (if this happens with a Cut and Paste, it destroys
user data by leaving files half moved) or slows it down to a crawl. These bugs
are not found when using the mv command in the terminal, which will copy the
files in a couple of seconds at maximum. This is a nightmare for people who
want to Cut and Paste a lot of files and who need to do it quickly.

  [Test Case]
Either find some files that you would be OK losing (or have a backup for) or
create the files yourself. You can run the following command to generate 1024
empty 1 MB files (do this in an empty directory, where you have at least 1 GB
of free space), which is a valid way to reproduce this bug:

  i=1 && while [ $i -lt 1025 ]; do dd if=/dev/zero of=$i bs=4k
  iflag=fullblock,count_bytes count=1M; i=$[$i+1]; done

  (Credit to https://stackoverflow.com/a/11779492/4123313 and
  http://tldp.org/LDP/Bash-Beginners-Guide/html/sect_09_02.html - also,
neither truncate or fallocate are used because the bug cannot be
reproduced when using those tools, my theory is that with dd it
actually writes the zeroes, with those tools, they say they wrote the
zeroes to the filesystems but it seems they actually didn't (something
along the lines of that), although I could be wrong)

If you open Nautilus or Caja, and Cut and Paste these 1024 files
somewhere else, the transfer will slow to a crawl, and in one instance
where I tried this with 1024 empty 512 MB files, Nautilus actually
crashed. This is very different to using mv in the terminal before
doing it in the file manager, which transfers these files flawlessly.

Once this fix is applied and I recreate these files, the transfer in
Nautilus and Caja is almost as fast as using mv (I'd say within a
second), which is what should happen.

[Breakdown of the patches and the regression potential for each]
First, I'd like to thank levien for providing the patch links to fix this.
Without that, it would have been a bit more work to hunt down which patches are
applicable.

  lp1133477-metadata-use-sequences-instead-of-lists.patch:
Patch Description: The metabuilder stores files and data in sorted lists. An
insertion into a sorted list is done in linear time, which highly affects
efficiency. In order to fix this, use GSequence instead which does insertion
and deletion in logarithmic time.

This patch is in here because it helps with a large amount of files.
Regardless if the files are 1 MB or 10 GB, the sorting of the files to
be moved/copied is inefficient. This addresses part of the problem by
making sure large amount of files can be dealt with efficiently. The
regression potential for this is low, and the only case that I can see
where a package would regress is a file manager that depends on (not
100% on this theory but it's a possibility) monitoring the status of
the list at a given time, and is incompatible with using GSequence. In
this case, the package would have something peculiar hardcoded, and
would most likely have an upstream fix that could be backported
because this fix is in the gvfs release that is already in 17.04 and
later (so they should have fixed it already). I can't think of a
package that does this (from what I can tell, it's not sane code if it
isn't compatible with this change) but if something does regress, it
  should be trivial to fix.

  lp1133477-metadata-use-queues-instead-of-lists.patch:
Patch Description: Some of the lists used by the metabuilder have items
appended to them. Appending to a list is done in linear time and this highly
affects efficiency. In order to fix this, use GQueue which supports appending
in constant time.

This patch is extremely similar in function to the last one, but this
one addresses items appended to a list instead of files and data in
sorted lists. As such, the regression potential is similar (low)
because it would involve a package

DNS and search domain is not pushed to systemd-resolved sometimes

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have an OpenVPN connection with statically configured DNS server
address and the search domain. When this connection is established,
there is a high chance that the DNS address and the search domain are
not pushed to systemd-resolved for this connection. The problem does
not reproduce reliably, sometimes the parameters are pushed. When the

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1691996] Re: DNS and search domain is not pushed to systemd-resolved sometimes

2017-08-19 Thread Tomasz Kontusz
~jonathanharker could you check if `nmcli connection show 'CONNECTION
NAME' | grep DNS` shows the nameservers you expect? You can list
connection names with `nmcli connection`. This way we'll make sure if
the problem happens between NM and the VPN or NM and resolved (for me it
was the latter, and the attached patch fixed it).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1691996] Re: DNS and search domain is not pushed to systemd-resolved sometimes

2017-08-19 Thread Tomasz Kontusz
There is a fix posted on the upstream bug
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=779087 - I've attached a
ported patch.

** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #779087
   https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=779087

** Patch added: "Port of patch from Patch from
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=779087 to network-manager

Title:
DNS and search domain is not pushed to systemd-resolved sometimes

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have an OpenVPN connection with statically configured DNS server
address and the search domain. When this connection is established,
there is a high chance that the DNS address and the search domain are
not pushed to systemd-resolved for this connection. The problem does
not reproduce reliably, sometimes the parameters are pushed. When the
parameters are not pushed, 'systemd-resolve --status' reports no DNS
servers or DNS domain for the VPN connection, and name resolution does
  not work.

This bug has been reportedly fixed upstream in NetworkManager 1.8. The
  upstream bug reports are:

  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=782597
  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=779087

Please, update NetworkManager shipped with Ubuntu or backport the fix.

Bug description:
  How it does work:
If I add some icons they are not realigned automaticly, instead I have to
deselect 'keep aligned' in the context menu (of the desktop) and then
reselect it.
  how it should work:
If anything happens with the icons on the desktop realign them to fit into
the grid.

Seems to me like there's just the part missing where the desktop calls the
realign function if an icon is moved/created.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1711841] [NEW] (Settings > Color) Button is too small to fit the containing text

2017-08-19 Thread Harald H.
Public bug reported:

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1. Open Settings > Color
2. Add a new profile
3. Remove the profile
4. Add a new profile again

Everything seems fine the first time you enter a color profile, but on
the second time the "Remove profile" button is too small to contain the
text.

Please see the attached screencap which better shows the issue.

You can run the following command to generate 1024
empty 1 MB files (do this in an empty directory, where you have at least 1 GB
of free space), which is a valid way to reproduce this bug:

  i=1 && while [ $i -lt 1025 ]; do dd if=/dev/zero of=$i bs=4k
  iflag=fullblock,count_bytes count=1M; i=$[$i+1]; done

As such, the regression potential is similar (low)
  because it would

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1681513] Re: Ubuntu 17.04/17.10: New feature in NetworkManager stops several WiFi adapters from working (MAC Address Randomization issue)

2017-08-19 Thread Ricardo
Same problem with a build-in laptop wifi

Device = BCM43142 802.11b/g/n
Manufacturer = Broadcom Limited
Driver = wl0
Driverversion = 6.30.223.271 (r587334)

Solved by adding:

[Device]
wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=no

to NetworkManager.conf && restart network-manager service

Title:
Ubuntu 17.04/17.10: New feature in NetworkManager stops several WiFi
adapters from working (MAC Address Randomization issue)

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  According to

https://blogs.gnome.org/thaller/2016/08/26/mac-address-spoofing-in-networkmanager-1-4-0/
there is a new privacy feature in the new version of NetworkManager.
This privacy feature can cause some USB WiFi adapters to stop working
while they used to work with older versions of NetworkManager (Ubuntu 16.10
or older).

The purpose of this privacy feature is to get your computer to report a new
random MAC address whenever you connect to a WiFi network.
This privacy feature is especially useful when you connect to public WiFi
networks, so that the operators cannot identify you when you connect multiple
times.

The downside of this privacy feature is that some USB WiFi adapters misbehave
when NetworkManager tries to change their MAC address repeatedly.
The result is that those USB WiFi adapters cannot connect anymore to the WiFi
 network.

  Original report follows:

My Panda USB wi-fi adapter works just fine on 16.10, but when I try to
connect to my wi-fi router in 17.04, GNOME network manager reports
"Connection failed." I did some tinkering, and noticed that my MAC
address for my wifi adapter, according to GNOME, is DIFFERENT every
time I make it forget my wifi settings and try to reconnect. Weird,
right? Any leads on a possible fix or work-around?

I'm running the latest beta of Ubuntu GNOME 17.04, kernel
  4.10.0-19-generic, GNOME 3.24.0.

  Confirmed

Bug description:
I've noticed my Kaby Lake i7 laptop with 16GB RAM become extremely
slow at time even when not performing any CPU intensive tasks. I've
tried to find out the culprit process and it turned out to be Gnome
Software. It was consuming 99% of CPU. I remember having clicking
"update all" in Gnome Software some time ago and also "check for
updates" in control center's details section some time after that.

Excuse me, but Jeremy Bicha (jbicha) ask me
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-software/+bug/1711728)
to DON'T creat the bug in gnome-software, but in the specific package of
the application.

Christophe.

Please file individual bugs against those apps and add the tag
'appstream'. If you can find the upstream bug tracker for a specific
app, it would probably be useful to file a bug there too.

I'm closing this bug because it's not specific enough to be fixed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1711793] [NEW] Get trash bin on Dock rather than on desktop

2017-08-19 Thread Amr Ibrahim
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1711753 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1711753

Public bug reported:

Can we get the trash bin on the Dock rather than on the desktop? For
some people like me who want their desktop to be clean, I prefer the
trash bin to be on the Dock. This also has the advantage of easy access
to the trash bin without going to the desktop.

Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Just like Debian offers.

Ubuntu needs to offer the firefox-esr package to be taken seriously in
the enterprise space. And I am sure there are a lot of users that
appreciate their addons not potentially breaking that often (which is
the real issue for me personally).

Our organisation strongly recommends firefox users to only use ESR.
This makes it hard for me to push Ubuntu within our organisation.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1676164] Re: REQ: firefox-esr package needed

2017-08-19 Thread Melvyn Sopacua
Not because of the enterprise argument, but because Xul support will be
dropped in 57.x. This means a large number of vital extensions will
cease to work.

Before switching Zesty over to 56.x, please consider adding 52-ESR for
Zesty users. Come release 56.x profiles will no longer migrate correctly
if one decides to downgrade.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 362112] Re: Nautilus location bar buttons take us backwards in history, but not forwards

2017-08-19 Thread Bug Watch Updater
** Changed in: nautilus
   Status: Confirmed => Fix Released

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop
Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu.

Title:
Nautilus location bar buttons take us backwards in history, but not
  forwards

Status in Nautilus:
  Fix Released
Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: nautilus

  Using Nautilus in "browser mode":

  1. Gnome Places --> Home Folder (for someuser). This brings up a new
Nautilus window. History menus: Back: . Fwd:
  2. Open the Music directory. Back: someuser. Fwd:
  3. Open a subdirectory of Music, e.g. Beach Boys. Back: Music, someuser.
Fwd:
  4. Click the Location Bar Button "someuser". Back: . Fwd: Music,
Beach Boys.
  5. Click on Location Bar Button "Beach Boys". Back: someuser. Fwd:

BUG: It seems inconsistent and strange that clicking on the location
bar buttons that represent the directory path would take me backwards
in the history. It is then inconsistent and strange that clicking on
the buttons that are ahead of the current button do NOT take me
  forward in the path.

That is, when I click them for directories that are parents, grand-
parents, etc. of the current/working directory, then I am actually
somehow/someway navigating in the navigation history stacks. But when
I click on a child, grand-child, etc. in the location bar buttons,
then I am actually starting a new path (clearing the fwd stack).

Perhaps this is by design, but if so, then I think the rules for these
buttons should be clearly stated in a design document. Each
step/behavior should be able to be conveyed (even if it is non-
deterministic) in the Gnome Nautilus Help.

( Bonus Question: What happens after step 5 when you click on "Music" in the
location bar buttons? )
