[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1563110]

2020-02-12 Thread monkeygre7
Cannabidiol (CBD) has been as of late shrouded in the media, and you may have
even considered it to be an include sponsor to your post-exercise smoothie or
morning espresso. What precisely is CBD? For what reason is it out of nowhere
so famous?

Title:
List view in Nautilus does not allow dragging a selection by mouse

Status in GTK+:
  New
Status in Nautilus:
  Confirmed
Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
When viewing files in Nautilus one can drag a rectangle around them to
mark certain files. This is not possible in the list view of Nautilus
even though there is usually a large white space in folders with few
files that can make a user believe that dragging with the mouse there
would produce the same rectangle as in icon view. I do it all the time
by habit, and it is very annoying.

  Proposal:
  * Make it possible to drag a rectangle in list view. The problem is that
starting to drag on a list item moves that item. Konqueror has solved this that
you have to drag on the item name itself to move, else a rectangle marquee is
started. Personally I find this quite efficient but may be annoying for less
experienced users...

I have quite good machine:

model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6770HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz

and ibus daemon is running randomly about 100% cpu. Keeping htop opened

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1855469] Re: gnome-shell lags on wayland

2020-02-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This bug is closed for now because the information requested in comment
#2 was not provided.

I'd like to note though, that if you find 'swapoff -a' helps then that's
an indication your system was experiencing a memory leak. For some
reason Ubuntu is better able to deal with those situations when swapping
is disabled. But it doesn't mean the kernel's swapping behaviour is the
main issue...

If you would like to continue discussing this bug then please:

 (a) Provide the information requested in comment #2; and

 (b) Reproduce the lag situation again and while it is happening run:

ps auxw --sort -rss > allprocesses.txt

and then attach the file 'allproceses.txt' here.

I'm not sure Kelvin's patch is to blame. I think it's just exposing a
latent issue.

So we are in an infinite loop in process_address() calling

long and I'm currently using creduce to minimize the test case.

Maybe not. Today I did see the bug, or something like it, occur in Gnome
Shell 3.35.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1853638] Re: BCM57416 NetXtreme-E Dual-Media 10G RDMA Ethernet device seems to be dropping data

2020-02-12 Thread Nivedita Singhvi
Additional observations.

MAAS is being used to deploy the system and configure
the bond interface and settings.

MAAS allows you to specify which is the primary interface, with
the other being the backup, for the active-backup bonding mode.
However, it does not appear to be working -it's not passing along
a primary primitive, for instance, in the netplan yaml or otherwise
resulting in this being honored (still need to confirm).

MAAS allows you to enter a mac address for the bond interface,
but if not supplied, by default it will use the mac address of
the "primary" interface, as configured.

MAAS then populates the /etc/netplan/50-cloud-init.yaml, including
a macaddr= line with the default.

netplan then passes that along to systemd-networkd.

The bonding kernel, however, will use as the active interface
whichever interface is first attached to the bond (i.e., which
completes getting attached to the bond interface first) in the
absence of a primary= directive.

The bonding kernel will, however, use the mac addr supplied
as an override.

So let's say the active interface was configured in MAAS to be
f0, and it's mac is used to be the mac address of the bond,
but f1 (the second port of the NIC) actually gets attached
first to the bond and is used as the active interface by the
bond.

We have a situation where f0 = backup, f1 = active, and bond0
is using the mac of f0. While this should work, there is a
potential for problems depending on the circumstances.

It's likely this has nothing to do with our current issue, but
here for completeness. Will see if we can test/confirm.

  gnome-shell leaking memory

Bug description:
On one of my machines which has been upgraded over several years and
is now running 19.10 just one of the configured users appears to be
seeing a dramatic memory leak in gnome-shell, even when nothing is
happening on the UI. Immediately after logging on, using the Ubuntu
selection from the logon screen, gnome shell shows as using about
134MB. From there it climbs at about 300MB per hour and after a few
hours the machine grinds to a crawl, not surprisingly. This happens
even if the user logs on and then the machine is left completely
alone. Logout and back in frees all the memory.
A test user I have configured sees no such problem.
I have uninstalled all extensions apart from the system ones, disabled
all the system ones and reset all the gnome settings using dconf reset
-f /org/gnome/ to no avail. Also I have removed
~/.local/share/gnome-shell and allowed it to recreate it.
Also I have removed .compiz, .config/dconf/user, .gconf, .gnome, .gnome2.
I can't see anything obvious in the log.
It must be something in my settings that is triggering it as the other
user does not see it, but I have run out of ideas on what to try.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1862910] Re: gnome-shell leaking memory

2020-02-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
> I installed appimagelauncher [1] some time ago and if I disable the
daemon and reboot then it seems the memory leak is no more.

Yes, please verify that. It's hard to imagine how that's relevant to
gnome-shell's memory usage, but one theory is that it is periodically
triggering code execution in gnome-shell that a default system would not
experience. This could happen via dbus interfaces, or by repeatedly
changing the set of installed apps. That would still be a gnome-shell
bug, but not a common one...

> I did already have show seconds set, I have now tried without and it
doesn't seem to make a difference

Can you please check that again, without show-seconds? That was my
strongest suspicion of why the leak continues on a desktop that's not
being used.

  I'm running LibreOffice 6.3.2.2 on Ubuntu 19.10.

In this environment, copy/cut/paste often fails. Specifically, the
paste command sometimes does not paste the text that was cut/copied
most recently. Instead, it pastes text that was cut/copied at some
  prior time.

I use LibreOffice Writer a lot, and I now see this problem very often,
  i.e. many times every day.

There is some discussion of the problem here:

 https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/213510/copypaste-issues-
  libreoffice-calc/

Several posters there say that they are also using Ubuntu 19.10.

Ubuntu 19.10 includes Mutter 3.34, which has a new clipboard manager:

 https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item=GNOME-3.34
  -Clipboard-Manager

It seems like that could be related.

Repeatable hang within 5 minutes using stress-ng + sleep + usb mouse

Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  If I run a thermal transition test script (30 seconds stress-ng, 30
seconds sleep, in a loop) and move a local USB mouse, Kubuntu reliably
crashes, usually in the first couple of runs and almost 100% of the
  time by run 6.

This appears to be hardware-linked, but not due to a specific piece of
bad hardware: I have swapped literally every piece of hardware in the
  system.

It shows up (while running the script at the end):
  - On both an MSI B450 Gaming plus max and MSI MPG X570 Gaming plus mainboard.
  - On both an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 and 3600X CPU.
  - With one or two sticks of RAM. I've tested both sticks individually, in
more than one mainboard slot.
  - Regardless of whether the mainboard is in/attached to a case.
  - Regardless of whether there is an m.2 SSD installed or I'm running off a
live Kubuntu 19.10 USB stick with no hard disk attached.
  - Regardless of which of two mice I use (an old Logitech one, or a GTX 133
Gaming mouse).
  - Regardless of whether I'm using a Corsair VS650 or Corsair AX850 PSU.
  - Regardless of whether I'm using an AMD RX 5700 XT or using an Nvidia
Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2700 Super (with open source drivers in both cases).
  - Regardless of whether I'm using KDE or XFCE.
  - Regardless of whether I'm using the default KDE DM or switch to GDM3 and
set WaylandEnable=false.
  - Regardless of whether I use the default 5.3.0-29-generic kernel or
5.4.17-050417-generic.
  - Regardless of whether I go directly into the graphical environment or start
in runlevel 3 and then manually run startx.
  - Regardless of whether it's on the rising or falling edge of the
stress-script's temperature changes.
  - Regardless of bios version on the X570 mainboard (the one it shipped with,
or the newest one released in January 2020).
  - Regardless of whether XMP is on or off in the bios.
  - Regardless of whether I use the default or set global c-state to "control =
disabled" in the bios.
  - Regardless of whether I add processor.max_cstate=5 idle=halt in grub.
  - Regardless of whether or not speakers are plugged in.
  - Regardless of whether I'm using a USB port that is directly on the
motherboard or is on the front of the case.
  - Regardless of which monitor it is attached to.

  It doesn't show up:
  - On an old i7-4771 machine I have, also running Kubuntu 19.10, while running
the test script.
  - When I use a mouse remotely with ssh -Y [ip of the machine I am reporting
this from] xeyes, while running the test script.
  - When I do non-mouse USB input, ie via a USB keyboard or USB wifi dongle,
including under saturated network load, while running the test script.
  - During stress tests of the GPU, CPU, etc. Tools like memtest, mprime,
Unigine Superposition, repeated kernel compiles, etc run stably overnight.
  - When the system is entirely idle aside from mouse movement.
  - When I start in runlevel 3 and run the same test script, using the mouse
with gpm.
  - Running the same test script without mouse movement: this was stable
overnight, then crashed within a couple of minutes of moving the mouse.

It shows up with load other than the stress-ng+sleep script too, but
much less reliably - I'm writing this bug report on the relevant
machine, with firefox open. Crashes occur at least once a week under
  these conditions, but not frequently.

Crashes occur with sensor-reported CPU temperatures of 32 to 41
degrees Celsius. Nothing is overheating, and the system is stable at
much higher temperatures under sustained stress tests.

The symptoms of the crash: the display stops updating and the system
does not respond to any further input, including via the network or
magic sysrq key. There is nothing related to it in syslog or
journalctl, including when I'm running journalctl -f at the time of
  the crash.

  The test script:
  #!/bin/bash
  for x in {1..1}
  do
  echo "Run $x at `date`"
  stress-ng --cpu 12 --cpu-method all --verify -t 30s --metrics-brief
  sleep 30
  done

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1862792] Re: gnome-shell always crash after boot

2020-02-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks, but unfortunately none of those are usable, for a variety of
reasons. Obviously we should ignore the crashes in google-chrome-stable
and cups-browsed here since this bug report is about gnome-shell
crashing. But the gnome-shell crashes are not usable for reasons like:

---

Invalid core dump: BFD: warning: /tmp/apport_core_getbxb5s is truncated:
expected core file size >= 1186811904, found: 249229312

---

You have some obsolete package versions installed. Please upgrade the
following packages and check if the problem still occurs:

usb-modeswitch

---

Please keep collecting crash reports as one of them should eventually be
useful. Please also try uninstalling these:

'dash-to-pa...@jderose9.github.com',
'sensory-percept...@harlemsquirrel.github.io',
'alternate-...@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com',
'openweather-extens...@jenslody.de'

We need extensions to be uninstalled because we find a large number of
bugs are caused by extensions. And just disabling a buggy extension is
not enough to stop it from interfering.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1862910] Re: gnome-shell leaking memory

2020-02-12 Thread Colin Law
I think this may not be a gnome-shell issue at all. I installed
appimagelauncher [1] some time ago and if I disable the daemon and reboot then
it seems the memory leak is no more. At least I think that is the case, I need
to do some more testing but thought I should report back immediately so that
no-one wastes any more time on it.
I will follow up when I have reached a firm conclusion.

Title:
  gnome-shell leaking memory

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Podcast episodes deleted if "played" while waiting for download

Status in rhythmbox package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  To reproduce:

  1) Find a podcast that (a) has at least three episodes in it and (b) has
episodes that are sufficiently long that you can perform step (5)
below while waiting for one to download. (I encountered this bug on
, which is the podcast for
the U.S.A. radio show "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" by NPR).
  2) Subscribe to the podcast (i.e. select "Podcasts" under "Library",
click "Add", enter the URL in the search box, click "Search", click
 "Subscribe", and click "Close".).
  3) Rhythmbox will download only the most recent episode. Wait for that
 download to complete.
  4) Select at two of the older (not yet downloaded) episodes with
ctrl-click. Then right-click on the selected episodes and choose
"download episode" from the context menu. Rhythmbox will start
downloading one episode and mark the other as "waiting".
  5) Before that download completes, double-click on the "waiting" episode.

  Results:
  1) The double-clicked episode immediately starts playing, but it still
displays its status as "waiting". The existing download is not
 interrupted.
  2) When the existing download completes, the double-clicked episode
continues to play but also starts "downloading", apparently from the
 beginning.
  3) When the double-clicked episode finishes downloading, it abruptly
stops playing and then disappears from the episode list. After this,
the episode is no longer visible anywhere in Rhythmbox. This
 persists even after a restart.

Expected result: Not sure what I would expect, but episodes most
certainly should not be getting deleted. ;)

The attached 'rbx.log' contains the output of 'rhythmbox -d' when
performing the performing the procedure described above.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1824874] Re: undismissable, unclickable authentication dialog left on screen (top-left corner) after policykit authentication [pushModal: invocation of begin_modal failed]

2020-02-12 Thread Bruce Copeland
Sergey, I think you might be onto something. I use a yubikey and have
PAM configured to detect the yubikey automatically for sudo. So it could
be a timing issue as you suggest, or maybe GNOME is making inappropriate
assumptions about whether authentication requires actual user input.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1861340] Re: All bitmap fonts no longer visible after upgrade 19.10 -> Focal (development)

Title:
All bitmap fonts no longer visible after upgrade 19.10 -> Focal
  (development)

Status in Pango:
  Fix Released
Status in pango1.0 package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
For years I've installed a bitmap font for my terminals, but since I
upgraded to Focal (development branch) today, it (and other bitmap
  fonts) no longer work.

The font is 'Dina', from here:

http://www.dcmembers.com/jibsen/download/61/?unapproved=504=f1abb9d89caafa881dcfc05cd32372e7

I have always installed it using a script:

  # install dina
  sudo mkdir -p /usr/share/fonts/Dina
  cd /usr/share/fonts/Dina
  sudo unzip ~/Downloads/Dina.zip

  # enable bitmap fonts
  sudo rm -f /etc/fonts/conf.d/70-no-bitmaps.conf

  # rebuild the cache
  fc-cache -f -v

  # Set as default mono font
  gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface monospace-font-name "Dina 8"

This has always worked in the past, through many versions of Ubuntu,
  including 19.10.

  I installed Focal today, using `sudo do-release-upgrade -d`.

Now the above script does not make Dina visible in font selectors such
as that produced by the Tweaks / Fonts / [Monospace Text] button.
Terminals that were previously configured to use that font now display
the "box of hex digits" characters (what are they called?)

gnome-font-viewer does not list any of the installed bitmap fonts.

While trying to find a fix, I tried a few changes to the above script,
  which did not help:

  * Unzip to "$HOME/.fonts" instead
  * Trying other symlinks in the fonts config.d:

  (
  cd /etc/fonts/conf.d
  sudo rm -f 70-no-bitmaps.conf
  sudo ln -sf ../conf.avail/70-yes-bitmaps.conf
  )

(tried with both 'yes-bitmaps' and 'force-bitmaps')
  * fc-cache -r # "really" force cache re-creation

2020-02-12 Thread Sergey Zolotorev
Just want to add five cents: I am not active user of Ubuntu right now
but I faced with the same issue in many other versions of GNOME in other
distributions (currently I suffer from this issue in Arch Linux). I
suspect that it caused by custom PAM modules which add to authorization
process some delays (in my case this module is pam_yubico which waits
for user action) but I still do not have a chance to check it.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1862281] Re: Repeatable hang within 5 minutes using stress-ng + sleep + usb mouse

2020-02-12 Thread Luke Barone-Adesi
The problem does not show up on "Ubuntu on Wayland" (as judged by 20
minutes of moving the mouse while running the stress-ng script in the
first post).

Repeatable hang within 5 minutes using stress-ng + sleep + usb mouse

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

  #!/bin/bash
  for x in {1..1}
  do
  echo "Run $x at `date`"
  stress-ng --cpu 12 --cpu-method all --verify -t 30s --metrics-brief
  sleep 30

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1824874] Re: undismissable, unclickable authentication dialog left on screen (top-left corner) after policykit authentication [pushModal: invocation of begin_modal failed]

2020-02-12 Thread Bruce Copeland
This morning, I managed to trigger this bug again. I installed a new
component from the Activities/Search view. The component installed
without requiring any authentication, but 30 minutes later, the
offending authentication dialog image appeared on the screen.

I believe there are probably two different bugs here:

1. In the ubuntu software install, there is probably a thread
synchronization defect that allows software to install without
authentication.

2. Separately gnome shell appears to paint widgets even though there is
apparently no logic/process attached to the widget.

2020-02-12 Thread S Jaker
A viable work around seems to be increasing shared memory via the
sysctl.conf file and opening a small (?KB) image before opening a larger
(?MB) image. This does cause a noticable system lag when the mouse
cursor passes over the rendered image window.

add the following line:

kernel.shmmax = 1073741824

then execute:

sudo sysctl -p

...

This solution does NOT always work if a small image has not first been
opened. Looking through the source code, it appears the cairo routines
find exhausted shared memory pool and return a NULL ptr. Why opening a
small image first seems to help? I have no idea.

Version 3.18.1 on 16.04 LTS does not have this issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1862855] Re: "file does not exist" for existing files

2020-02-12 Thread Heather Ellsworth
Thanks for the report! First off, what version of libreoffice are you
using? Your system info says "Package: libreoffice (not installed)".
What version is in the libreoffice -> Help -> About libreoffice ?

If you're using the deb that is provided in the 19.10 update archives,
then that should be 6.3.4-0ubuntu0.19.10.1, and running libreoffice
/tmp/testfile.txt should open writer.

If you're using the snap, then that is 6.4.0.3 and the snap does not
have access to /tmp. Because it's an isolated app package, the snap has

Title:
Podcast episodes deleted if "played" while waiting for download

Status in rhythmbox package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

  Request for update: SANE 1.0.29

Status in sane-backends package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
In Focal we are still a bit old-fashioned regarding scanning. We are
still at the ancient SANE 1.0.27! That is really INSANE.

Current version is 1.0.29 and it contains a very important new feature
which will make hundreds (thousands?) of new scanners work with
Ubuntu. This new feature is Apple AirScan support as a client. I have
introduced a lot of nice printing stuff to support AirPrint, making
lots of printers (practically all modern network printers) working,
and all the multi-function devices under these (printer and scanner in
one) do AirScan, so all these scanner will work with SANE 1.0.29 (if
yours does not, it is a bug in SANE, please report).

The AirScan support is provided by the new "escl" backend. supporting
the eSCL protocol AirPrint is based on. The protocol uses HTTP and
XML, so this works out-of-the-box if your printer is connected to the
network, if it is connected via USB it work via IPP-over-USB using the
  ippusbxd package.

  Changes list from upstream:

  - Backends
+ adds an escl backend (theoretically supporting all AirPrint devices with
a scan unit
+ adds support for 23 new scanner models via existing backends
+ significantly changes genesys and pixma backends
+ fixes bugs in canon_dr, fujitsu, hp3900, mustek_usb2, plustek and
xerox_mfp backends
+ fixes all compiler warnings on Debian 10 (#120)
+ fixes portability issues for uClibc-ng and MacOS builds
+ adds support to record and replay USB I/O traffic
+ adds timestamps to debug logs

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1862969] [NEW] On SystemReboot wifi failed to connect on tplink wifi adapter

2020-02-12 Thread FeaturizSudhakar
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 19.10 64bit for my PC. For network/wifi I'm using TP-
Link wifi adapter.

My network works only when I do a fresh start (That is completely shutdown and
start).
But network connection fails to connect to my wifi on REBOOT(on system software
updates , etc..).

After reboot:
1. I can see my mobile device(wifi service providing) name in the list at WIFI
SETTINGS -> VISIBLE NETWORKS.
2. BUT IT FAILS TO CONNECT. It tries many times and finally says , CANT CONNECT.

I searched GOOGLE, UBUNTU FORMS, but I failed to find the solution.

As per now solution:
After reboot , I have to shutdown pc again and do a boot. To make wifi connect.

** Affects: network-manager (Ubuntu)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1853357] Re: display (whole computer?) hangs when I attempt to use DisplayLink with Wayland

2020-02-12 Thread Ppaalanen
I tested with a Dell D3100 dock and two monitors connected to the dock
via HDMI in addition to laptop built-in screen. I did this on Ubuntu
19.10 with the libmutter fix from eoan-proposed (libmutter-5-0 package
version 3.34.3-1ubuntu1~19.10.1).

I tried unplugging and hotplugging each HDMI cable individually and
together. I tried hotplugging and unplugging the dock itself (USB). I
tried booting with the dock connected, and booting with the dock
disconnected then hotplugged.

With all three monitors on, I left one glxgears running on one
DisplayLink output and the laptop screen each, and a terminal printing
the fps on the other DL output for 10 minutes. Then I changed the
refresh rate of one DL output to 50 Hz and the other DL output to 75 Hz,
confirmed from the monitors themselves to actually run with those
refresh rates, and left things running for a couple of minutes more.
(Everything defaulted to 60 Hz before.)

I was unable to reproduce any kind of freeze.

However, I did notice that with three monitors, gnome-control-center
Display settings is crash-happy if any monitor was disabled. But that is
off-topic here, because even that did not cause anything to freeze.

I did also observe the "outdated content" issue I referred to in my
earlier comment here. That should be fixed in EVDI kernel module once
DisplayLink releases an update.

DisplayLink is working under Xorg, but when I try to use it under
Wayland my whole display hangs and I can't even switch to a different
VT with Ctrl-Alt-F3 so I think maybe the whole computer is hung? Not
  certain.

  [ Test case ]

  - Install DisplayLink drivers
  - Start GNOME Shell in wayland mode
  - Connect to a display-link dock
  - Expect the shell to work properly and be visible in the external device

  [ Regression potential ]

Wayland session won't work even for standard drm devices

I am using the DisplayLink driver for Ubuntu provided at
https://www.displaylink.com/downloads/ubuntu, which I think is the
only way to get DisplayLink fully working under Ubuntu? That is,
DisplayLink didn't work when I installed the evdi-dkms and libevdi0
Ubuntu packages, and I couldn't find any other packages that might be
relevant (did I miss something?) so as far as I can tell the only way
to get everything that's needed is from displaylink.com.

I'm reporting this issue while logged in under Xorg because I can't
report it when logged in with my DisplayLink monitors plugged in under
  Wayland, for obvious reasons. :-/

  gnome-shell leaking memory

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Title:
  gnome-shell leaking memory

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1862910] Re: gnome-shell leaking memory

2020-02-12 Thread Colin Law
1. Screenshot attached. I have been using two screens but to simplify
things I have confirmed that only having one makes no difference, so I
am sticking to that whilst testing.

2. I did already have show seconds set, I have now tried without and it
doesn't seem to make a difference

3. I thought I had disabled all extensions, though I am not entirely
sure of the official method of doing that. If I go to
https://extensions.gnome.org/local/ I see only Desktop Icons, Ubuntu App
Indicators and Ubuntu Dock and they are all disabled, but as you can see
from the screenshot I don't see exactly the same as I see if I logon
using Gnome. For instance the Dock is not autohiding. So I don't know
what is going on there. Logging on using Gnome does not stop the leak
though.

I see I have a larger selection of logon options than I see in a clean
install, I have Gnome, Gnome Classic, Gnome on Xorg, Ubuntu, Ubuntu on
Wayland, and Unity. I tried them all a few days ago and they all
exhibited the leak except Gnome Classic and Unity, though I have done a
lot of cleaning up trying to fix the problem since then so if it would
be useful I can repeat that test.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1861882] Re: Shift key cancels accented IME input with fcitx

2020-02-12 Thread T.D. Stoneheart
** Description changed:

  Prerequisites:
  * Ubuntu Bionic or Zorin OS 15
  * chromium-browser=79.0.3945.79-0ubuntu0.18.04.1 amd64
  * fcitx=1:4.2.9.6-1
  * fcitx-unikey=0.2.4-1.1

  Steps:
  * Launch fcitx and chromium-browser.
  * Focus input to a text box (e.g. omnibox, F12 console).
  * Trigger fcitx IME with UniKey.
  * Type a character sequence that produces a Vietnamese character (e.g. "aws"
(without quotes), with Telex input method, will produce "ắ"). Do not press Ctrl
or Spacebar, which will commit the word.
  * Press either Shift key.

  Expected result:
- * Nothing happens, or the typed character should not change, to the very
least.
+ * Nothing happens, or the typed character should not change, at the very
least.

  Actual result:
  * Typed word reverts back to "aws". The underline on the word still retains,
meaning that the word is not yet committed. This issue is a real nuisance when
typing a Vietnamese word followed by a Shift-punctuation (e.g. a question mark
right after the word).

  Remarks:
  * This issue does not happen on any other programs, only happens on Chromium
and Google Chrome, version 79.
  * Using fcitx-mozc, after typing a Japanese word, the Shift key does not
change the character.
  * This issue, more or less, is similar to bug #1859294, although not a strict
duplicate.

Title:
Bluetooth headset HSP/HFP mode not working in Bionic

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
There is a previous bug with almost the same title, but for Xenial
  (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/1549163). I
have had this issue in Artful, and when commented on the old bug, I
was asked to raise a new one instead. I waited to see if Bionic fixed
it for me, but it does not seem to work still. So!

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. enable bluetooth on computer and switch on the headset.
  2. pair and connect the headset
  3. go to settings to switch headset to HSP/HFP mode to enable mic
  4. save and close window.

  Expected behaviour:
  1. mic should be enabled and headset should be usable to attend calls on
laptop.

  Behaviour in error:
  1. Headset profile switches back to A2DP and mic is not enabled.

I am using a generic bluetooth headset on a fresh updated Kubuntu
  18.04 bionic with plasma DE.

  Software versions:
  Kernel: 4.15.0-20-generic
  Bluez version: 5.48-0ubuntu3
  pulseaudio: 1:11.1-1ubuntu7
  pulseaudio-module-bluetooth: 1:11.1-1ubuntu7

  Additional information:
Running "pacmd list-cards" says that HSF/HFP is 'not available' on the
headset:

  Output from Headset section:
  profiles:
a2dp_sink: High Fidelity Playback (A2DP Sink) (priority 40,
available: unknown)
  headset_head_unit: Headset Head Unit (HSP/HFP) (priority 30,
available: no)
off: Off (priority 0, available: yes)
  active profile:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1862910] Re: gnome-shell leaking memory

2020-02-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I would also like to know more about your GPU/driver configuration, in
case the problem is unique to a particular driver.

Please run:

  lspci -k > lspcik.txt

and attach the resulting file here.

Please also run:

  sudo apt install mesa-utils
  glxinfo > glxinfo.txt

and attach the resulting file here.

Title:
  gnome-shell leaking memory

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

I would like to understand if there's something about your system
triggering these leaks that most of us don't encounter.

Please:

1. Take a screenshot of your whole Ubuntu desktop (all monitors) that is
experiencing the problem and attach it here.

2. Try setting this to false:

   b'org.gnome.desktop.interface' b'clock-show-seconds' b'true'

and run the leak test again.

3. Try disabling ALL Ubuntu extensions, or just try a raw GNOME session
which should be the same:

   sudo apt install gnome-session

and choose GNOME on the login screen.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1862264] Re: Browsing smb share is painfully slow

2020-02-12 Thread Pablo Copissa
Looks like gio is part of glib, not gvfs, so changed the package accordingly.
Also made clear in the title that gio vs mount is part of the issue.

** Package changed: gvfs (Ubuntu) => glib2.0 (Ubuntu)

** Summary changed:

- Browsing smb share is painfully slow
+ Browsing smb share is painfully slow when mounted via "gio" (compared with
"mount")

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop

Title:
Browsing smb share is painfully slow when mounted via "gio" (compared
  with "mount")

Status in glib2.0 package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Ubuntu 18.04 LTS here, fully updated (as of late Jan 2020).
  TEST #1:
To establish a baseline/expected behavior, we first mount an SMB share via
mount.cifs and time an ls command:
  $ sudo mount -t cifs -o username=pablo //myserver.example.com/share
~/mnt/share
  $ cd ~/mnt/share/some/dir
  $ time ls
  ... approx 320 files ...
  real 0m1,080s
  user 0m0,008s
  sys 0m0,005s
  $ sudo umount ~/mnt/share

  TEST #2
Now we do the same via gio mount:
  $ gio mount smb://myserver.example.com/share
  cd
/run/user/1000/gvfs/smb-share\:server\=myserver.example.com\,share\=share/some/dir
  $ time ls
  ... same 320 files ...
  real 0m28,999s
  user 0m0,013s
  sys 0m0,032s

Enumeration of files is about 29 times slower when mounted via gio
mount than via mount -t cifs.

  TEST #3
Now for the real weird: while using the gio-mounted folder, we now time ls IN
COMBINATION WITH SOMETHING ELSE (can be strace ls, ls|wc etc...):
  $ time ls | wc
     321 3239804

  real 0m0,546s
  user 0m0,006s
  sys 0m0,004s

Note that this is almost TWICE AS FAST than the "fast" mount of test
#1 and about 53 times faster than "slow" test #2 !

The expectation is that Tests 1 and 2 should have similar timings, not
differing by a factor of 30 or so. More disturbing, there is no good
reason why tests 2 and 3 differ by an even bigger factor of 53: They
use the same underlying infrastructure which test 3 proves is
adequately fast. And yet, we get this slow down in test 2.

As a final note, these benchmarks are a distilled version of the original
real-life motivating scenario where a Java-based program would simply take tens
of minutes to display the same list of 320 files when mounted via gio mount and
a second or so when mounted via mount -t cifs.
The same timing difference is of course visible in any file manager.

  Hope this helps

PS: several old/ancient bug reports exist for a similar issue and I
deliberately copied the title from one of them (#259771)

PS2: may or may not be relevant: The remote server is a VM running
Windows 7 (yes, I know...) and the connection was made via VPN (Ubuntu
  stock SSTP).

PS3: Another data point (server is now a Synolgy NAS, not a Win7 VM)

  $ gio mount smb://nas.example.com/share2

  $ cd /run/user/1000/gvfs/smb-
  share\:server\=nas.example.com\,share\=share2/another/path

  $ time ls

  ... 528 subdirs approximately ...

  real 0m45,075s
  user 0m0,013s
  sys 0m0,058s

  $ time ls | wc
  5281631 10893

  real 0m0,911s
  user 0m0,003s
  sys 0m0,005s

  Factor is about 50.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1862926] [NEW] Request for update: SANE 1.0.29

2020-02-12 Thread Till Kamppeter
Public bug reported:

In Focal we are still a bit old-fashioned regarding scanning. We are
still at the ancient SANE 1.0.27! That is really INSANE.

Current version is 1.0.29 and it contains a very important new feature
which will make hundreds (thousands?) of new scanners work with Ubuntu.
This new feature is Apple AirScan support as a client. I have introduced
a lot of nice printing stuff to support AirPrint, making lots of
printers (practically all modern network printers) working, and all the
multi-function devices under these (printer and scanner in one) do
AirScan, so all these scanner will work with SANE 1.0.29 (if yours does
not, it is a bug in SANE, please report).

The AirScan support is provided by the new "escl" backend. supporting
the eSCL protocol AirPrint is based on. The protocol uses HTTP and XML,
so this works out-of-the-box if your printer is connected to the
network, if it is connected via USB it work via IPP-over-USB using the
ippusbxd package.

Changes list from upstream:

- Backends
+ adds an escl backend (theoretically supporting all AirPrint devices with a
scan unit
+ adds support for 23 new scanner models via existing backends
+ significantly changes genesys and pixma backends
+ fixes bugs in canon_dr, fujitsu, hp3900, mustek_usb2, plustek and
xerox_mfp backends
+ fixes all compiler warnings on Debian 10 (#120)
+ fixes portability issues for uClibc-ng and MacOS builds
+ adds support to record and replay USB I/O traffic
+ adds timestamps to debug logs

debdiff attached.

** Affects: sane-backends (Ubuntu)
 Importance: High
 Status: New

** Patch added: "sane-backends_1.0.27-3.2ubuntu4_1.0.29-0ubuntu1.debdiff"

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1862264] [NEW] Browsing smb share is painfully slow

2020-02-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Ubuntu 18.04 LTS here, fully updated (as of late Jan 2020).
TEST #1:
To establish a baseline/expected behavior, we first mount an SMB share via
mount.cifs and time an ls command:
$ sudo mount -t cifs -o username=pablo //myserver.example.com/share ~/mnt/share
$ cd ~/mnt/share/some/dir
$ time ls
... approx 320 files ...
real0m1,080s
user0m0,008s
sys 0m0,005s
$ sudo umount ~/mnt/share

TEST #2
Now we do the same via gio mount:
$ gio mount smb://myserver.example.com/share
cd
/run/user/1000/gvfs/smb-share\:server\=myserver.example.com\,share\=share/some/dir
$ time ls
... same 320 files ...
real0m28,999s
user0m0,013s
sys 0m0,032s

Enumeration of files is about 29 times slower when mounted via gio mount
than via mount -t cifs.

TEST #3
Now for the real weird: while using the gio-mounted folder, we now time ls IN
COMBINATION WITH SOMETHING ELSE (can be strace ls, ls|wc etc...):
$ time ls | wc
   321 3239804

real0m0,546s
user0m0,006s
sys 0m0,004s

Note that this is almost TWICE AS FAST than the "fast" mount of test #1
and about 53 times faster than "slow" test #2 !

The expectation is that Tests 1 and 2 should have similar timings, not
differing by a factor of 30 or so. More disturbing, there is no good
reason why tests 2 and 3 differ by an even bigger factor of 53: They use
the same underlying infrastructure which test 3 proves is adequately
fast.

$ gio mount smb://nas.example.com/share2

$ cd /run/user/1000/gvfs/smb-
share\:server\=nas.example.com\,share\=share2/another/path

$ time ls

... 528 subdirs approximately ...

real0m45,075s
user0m0,013s
sys 0m0,058s

$ time ls | wc
5281631 10893

real0m0,911s
user0m0,003s
sys 0m0,005s

Factor is about 50.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1852183] Re: [X11] copy/paste (clipboard) is broken in Ubuntu 19.10

2020-02-12 Thread AJenbo
This issue is present in 20.04. I'm mainly seeing it in CodeLite
(probably because that is where I spend all my time), but one
interesting thing is that it also affects VMs (Ubuntu 18.04) running in
Boxes with shared copy paste.

  I'm running LibreOffice 6.3.2.2 on Ubuntu 19.10.

In this environment, copy/cut/paste often fails. Specifically, the
paste command sometimes does not paste the text that was cut/copied
most recently. Instead, it pastes text that was cut/copied at some
  prior time.

I use LibreOffice Writer a lot, and I now see this problem very often,
  i.e. many times every day.

There is some discussion of the problem here:

 https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/213510/copypaste-issues-
  libreoffice-calc/

Several posters there say that they are also using Ubuntu 19.10.

Ubuntu 19.10 includes Mutter 3.34, which has a new clipboard manager:

 https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item=GNOME-3.34
  -Clipboard-Manager

It seems like that could be related.

This breaks compilation xorg-server on i386. I believe that -static
-fPIE -pie is probably invalid, and it fails on amd64 too.

$ gcc -fPIE -pie -static conftest.c
  /usr/bin/ld: /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.8/crtbeginT.o: relocation

snapd has a hard-coded list of allowed URL schemes. Currently that is
limited to "http", "https", "mailto", "snap".

We have a number of applications in the store which are trying to use
protocol handlers outside this scope and break when that's not
  possible.

  e.g.

  Telegram Desktop: tg:/
  Github Desktop: git:/
  IRCCloud Desktop: irc:/

These are the ones I know of, others may also be affected. Can we
please at least expand the list to those that we know of, and perhaps
  research other popular protocol handlers?

Ideally we wouldn't have a whitelist, because this delays our ability
to land new applications with as-yet unknown url schemes.

2020-02-12 Thread Colin Law
Public bug reported:

Changed the hostname of a system recently by opening the system

Noticed afterwards that running sudo commands in the terminal resulted
in an 'unable to resolve hostname' message, although the commands ran
  successfully.

Checked and it looked like changing the name updates /etc/hostname as
expected, but it didn't update /etc/hosts for me - it still had:

  127.0.0.1 localhost
  127.0.1.1 (old hostname)

Replacing the old hostname with the new one removed the message from
the terminal when running sudo commands.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1862895] Re: [focal][nvidia][gdm3] Xorg crashes when virt-viewer or remmina are used to connect to a windows10 VM

2020-02-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.
