2015-10-16 Thread Nekhelesh Ramananthan
Could we try to target this for OTA-8 or even OTA-9 consideirng it is
quite a nuisance that alarms cannot be heard if headphones are used to

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1307118] [NEW] Unity freezes on resuming from suspend

2014-04-13 Thread Nekhelesh Ramananthan
Public bug reported:

After suspending laptop (by closing the laptop screen) and then
resuming, the screen is black and doesn't seem to take any keyboard or
mouse input. As a result, the only way to fix the situation is to hard
reboot the system.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Suspend laptop
2. Wait for at least 10-15 minutes
3. Try resuming

What happens:
Black screen with the mouse cursor visible. However the whole screen is frozen.
No keyboard or mouse input is accepted. As a result, I cannot switch to any vt
to reboot or restart the lightdm process

What should happen:
Unity lockscreen is shown where one can enter the password and return to the
user session

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1289876] [NEW] Unable to switch to Nvidia (performance mode) in Nvidia Settings

2014-03-08 Thread Nekhelesh Ramananthan
Public bug reported:

After a recent update to Nvidia-331, I am no longer able to switch to
the Nvidia (performance mode) through the Nvidia X Server Settings

text which makes it impossible to understand why it doesn't happen. I
have attached a screenshot of the dialog that I see.

Unable to switch to Nvidia (performance mode) in Nvidia Settings

Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers-331-updates” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
After a recent update to Nvidia-331, I am no longer able to switch to

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 841409] Re: GEdit is the only choice as Calendar application in Default Applications dialog

2013-03-18 Thread Nekhelesh Ramananthan
Rainer, we understand the situation however there are no proper calendar
applications available. Sure there is Lightning as an add-on for
Thunderbird, however I don't think it is included by default. Probably a
bug report is to be opened in Thunderbird to include. We are working on
a calendar app for the Ubuntu Touch phone. And if it becomes mature,
sure it might even become default on the desktop but until then we just
have to wait a bit.

In Ubuntu Oneiric (11.10) beta1, opening the Default Applications dialog

choice) for Calendar items.
I think this is not expected, since it is not so useful to open calendar data
as standard text).

In Oneiric Thunderbird is default email client. Currently Thunderbird7 beta
is installed, and I noticed the Lightning extension for Calendar is not
compatible with it yet.

The current stack is being tested in https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-

  It includes
  - indicator-messages
  - gwibber
  - indicator-telepathy
  - thunderbird (soon, work is being finished)

Bug description:

severe, compiz hangs frequently after resuming from suspend or the

  [Testcase]:

  - grab xserver-xorg-video-intel from quantal
  - build it from the extracted directory
  - after the build run 'cd test make dri2-swap'
  - log in X
  - start two terminals
  - get dpms.sh from this bug, run it in the other terminal
  - on the other run ./dri2-swap

compiz should hang during the first couple of runs of dri2-swap

with the fixed package, it doesn't

  [Regression potential]

To ease the backporting, I did replace patch 101 with the commit that
was pulled upstream. This patch is needed for smooth transition from
plymouth to X. There _could_ be some issues with it (meaning
additional patches needed from upstream), but it seems to be working
  just fine for me.

The precise upload has another upstream fix for an issue referenced in
bug 992391, it should be safe.

  ---

This bug is about problems after resume, with Intel video hardware and
i965_dri.so. If you're having these symptoms with other hardware,
Nvidia or ATI/Radeon, this isn't the place for reports or questions.

[Those comments are building up, so brief links to direct other people
to appropriate bugs might be good here, if anyone has them. Thanks.]

This happens intermittently. Sometimes upon resume, all I see is a
black screen and the cursor. the mouse and keyboard respond (the mouse
moves) but nothing changes. Switching to console and back doesn't fix
it. Killing Compiz also does not fix the issue. Further, if one has
password lock disabled on resume the user will be stuck with a frozen
display of whatever was last shown on the screen before suspend. The
mouse cursor still changes as you hover over various elements but the
display is frozen solid. One can switch to another TTY via ctrl+alt+F1
but killing the X session is the only way to get back to the desktop.

Attempts to replace compiz have been fruitless. Trying the 3.4 kernel
also did not fix the issue.

BTW, I haven nothing connected to the laptop when I resume and before
suspend. This is a very annoying issue because the only way to
recover is to reboot, which means all the open files will be lost.

  [UPDATE]
It was discovered that switching to a tty, killing compiz, then invoking
'metacity --replace' would successfully switch over to metacity. Attempting to
invoke 'compiz --replace' afterwards would put the state right back where it
was (frozen screen, etc.) and output error messages saying something similar to
invalid configuration, this should never happen, you should probably raise a
bug report about it. After killing Compiz again and invoking compiz --replace
yet again I can get basic window management back (though unity --replace still
does not work as it whines about unclean exit states). So one still needs to
start over again to get it all functioning properly.

  Fix Released

Bug description:

Thank you for reporting this bug to make Ubuntu. However this is a
duplicate of bug 1035628. You will be glad to hear that that this has
been fixed. It is currently in Precise-Proposed updates. It should land
as an update to all Ubuntu 12.04 users in the next few days.

   Status: New = Confirmed

** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 1035628
[SRU Regression] Alt+Tab/Alt+grave brings other window to the front but
loses focus entirely.

Title:
Alt+section does not work as expected

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Reproduce:
Open two e.g. two Firefox windows. Use alt+section (key above tab, § on my
Swedish keyboard layout, ` on US layouts) to switch between the two different
windows.

  What happens:
A graphical window switcher is shown, with an orange glow around the window
not currently focused. You release alt+section, since the orange halo leads you
to beleive the window you want to switch to is selected. This is false -- you
are instead taken back to the window you had focused when pressing alt+section.

If I hold alt and press section again, the orange glow will move to
the right _together with the window it was highlighting_. After doing
this, window selection graphics work properly. This means I have to
double tap section in order to switch windows within an application.

Also, if I type alt+section really, really fast, the switcher window
does not appear, and then the window switching works as expected.

  Expected behavior:
  1. Alt+section should highlight the window that will actually be selected.
  2. I should not need to hold alt and double tap section to change to the next
window within an application. One section key press should be enough.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus

2012-09-13 Thread Nekhelesh Ramananthan
What I do not understand is that the official design decision has been
made by the Ayatana team (John Lea). So I do not see why the
disagreements should stop the development. Besides can't the final
decision be made after user testing this like in other situations?

Global menu in general (not only in Unity) is very unergonomic on large
screens (see the attached screenshot) because if you have a small window
somewhere near the low right corner you have to move the cursor all the way up
to to panel to reach the menu. I understand why the global menu was used for
the netbook edition (it saves space and most windows are maximized), but since
Unity is intended to be for the desktop edition there should be an option to
switch to the traditional position of the app menu. It would be welcomed by
many desktop users.

  A commonly suggested solution is:
   [ ] Global Menu on
   [ ] Global Menu off
[ ] Global Menu only for maximized windows
The default is usually suggested as either the first (on) or last (on only
for maximized windows).

  -
  Desired change:

Implement the 'Enhanced Menu' project for 12.10. This project will
address the issue described in this bug and also issues described in
the duplicates of this bus. Note this is the 'official' bug that
tracks the implementation of this project.

The following options will be added to 'System Settings/Appearance':

  ---
  Menus
  Location:Global/Local
  Visibility: Hidden/Always displayed
  ---

a progress bar shown, though no progress is initiated by those apps.
Some items are pushed 'up' and not visible, though if I move the mouse
into the blank spaces I get hovers for the items I can't see. The
hovers display at the proper Y location, however they trigger at the
wrong Y location. The mouse triggers the hovers roughly proportional

Note that the visible items all have proper hovers and display menus.
They behave proper, other than showing progress bars.

I am not sure what triggered this bug. I first noticed it when I saw

prior to that. I do not have steps to reproduce (I have only seen
  this happen once).

Chris, these keywords are used *only* for the sole purpose of improving
the matching in the dash. Currently, a new user can find totem in the
dash by explicitly searching for totem, movie. However the keywords will
help the user find totem using other generic terms such as Film, DVD etc

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 993537] Re: Sidebar does not always appear if mouse is moved to the left

2012-05-03 Thread Nekhelesh Ramananthan
Thank you for taking your time to report this bug to make Ubuntu better.
From Ubuntu 12.04, the launcher is designed to reveal only when applying
pressure (nudge). This is to avoid accidental revealing of the launcher.
Previously users in 11.04 and 11.10 accidentally revealed the launcher
when they were trying to click on the back button on Firefox which was
annoying. To tackle this issue the Unity developer made the launcher to
reveal not when the mouse is present on the left edge of the screen but
rather when you push against the left screen.

Hence marking this invalid since it is as per design and not a bug.

Bug description:
Since I upgraded my Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04, the sidebar (set to auto-
hide) does not always appear if I move my mouse to the left. I do see
a shadow (on the left side, only a couple of pixels width). To get the
sidebar to appear, I have to move the mouse up and down on that left
side. The shadow becomes somewhat larger, and after some movements the
  sidebar appears.

In 11.10, the sidebar directly appears after moving the mouse to the
  left.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 993783] Re: unity launcher steals mouse motion on dual-head display

2012-05-03 Thread Nekhelesh Ramananthan
Thank you for taking your time to report this bug to make Ubuntu better.
This behavior of stealing mouse movement is due to the sticky edge
option. You can disable it at Gnome System Settings - Displays -
Uncheck sticky edge. This will allow smooth movement across the
displays. Also for better movement you can also set the launcher to be
shown always. One of the reasons for implementing sticky edge is to help
reveal the launcher when it is in auto-hide.

Bug description:
On my dual-head system with screens in left-right juxtaposition, the
unity launcher now appears on the left of each screen. Fair enough,
it can be configured to hide itself. But it steals mouse movement
strongly, so that a rapid mouse move from one screen to the other
causes a long delay at the screen boundary -- longer than the cross-
screen mouse move, so quite an interruption.

A work-around is to auto-hide the launcher with reveal location set to
  top left corner.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 991846] Re: Provide Static quicklist support for LibreOffice grey's icon

2012-04-30 Thread Nekhelesh Ramananthan
Thank you for reporting this bug to make Ubuntu better. The quicklist
code you have mentioned in your code is outdated. It has been replaced
with the new convention. This is illustrated below,

[Desktop Action Writer]
Name=Text Document
Exec=libreoffice -writer %U
OnlyShowIn=Unity;

You can read more about this at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Unity/LauncherAPI#Static_Quicklist_entries.

Can you branch the libreoffice code, apply your patch and push this. We
will try to merge this into Ubuntu and Upstream as well?

@Other Unity developers
This bug is not a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/720716 since that
bug report only provide static quicklist support for writer, calc and impress.
This bug report is intended to provide quicklist support for the libreoffice
main launcher.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 979699] Re: Display on external monitor reverts to double display at restart

2012-04-13 Thread Nekhelesh Ramananthan
Thank you for taking your time to report this bug to make Ubuntu better.
I can confirm this issue on my system as well. Hence marking confirmed.

** Also affects: unity
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Tags added: multimonitor

** Changed in: unity
   Status: New = Confirmed

** Changed in: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu)
   Status: New = Confirmed

** Summary changed:

- Display on external monitor reverts to double display at restart
+ Display on external monitor reverts to mirror display on restart and logout

** Description changed:

I'm sorry I don't know what package this is related to.
Edit: Thank you Fabio Marconi for identifying the package.

My problem is that the system doesn't remember my display configuration when
I reboot my netbook.
I have an external monitor plugged to my laptop, and I use this monitor as my
principal and only display (laptop screen not used). But when I restart my
computer, even though the screen stays plugged in, the display goes back to
same image on both monitors. I have to use the shortcut Fn + F4 to go back
to my preferred configuration every time I boot up my computer.

  Steps to reproduce:
- 1. Plug in external monitor with VGA
- 2. Choose the external monitor as your main and only monitor
- 3. Reboot
+ 1. Plug in external monitor with VGA, HDMI port
+ 2. Choose the external monitor as your main and only monitor or as an
extended display.
+ 3. Reboot or log off.
  4. The display configuration is back to same image on both monitors

  Expected behaviour:
The system should remember the user's favourite display configuration for a
better work-flow. A lot of people use their laptop as a desktop with a bigger
monitor plugged into it.

2012-04-13 Thread Nekhelesh Ramananthan
Stephane, for me this problem exists on both log out and restart.
However this is only during the login screen and boot process. Once I am
logged into the Unity desktop, it is automatically restored to the
previous configuration I set it to. Can you confirm if this is the case
for you as well?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 973394] Re: Typing email into dash gives no results.

2012-04-05 Thread Nekhelesh Ramananthan
Chris Coulson, I basically read wikipedia about thunderbird where it
described it as Thunderbird aims to be a simple email, newsgroup and
news feed client. This is why I included client, news and
newsgroup.

1. However I see that only one of newsgroup and new is required since when
the user starts to type new.. thunderbird will start
showing up. So you can remove news from the keyword.

2. As for the client keyword I understand it is generic and can be
removed if you wish.

Summary: news and client can be removed.

_Keywords=Email;Newsgroup;News;Feed;RSS;Client;

The keywords best describe the functionality of thunderbird.

anyway) and now it triggers the dash and/or the shortcuts overlay each
  time.

new workspace switching shortcuts don't mix well with shortcuts help
  screen

Status in Unity:
  Confirmed
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
With the new supershift+arrows shortcut to switch workspaces, the
help screen pops up while the switch is in progress, making it hard to
  see what's underneath.

This isn't optimal because the choice of the workspace you work on is
based on the windows displayed on it, and it's much harder to find the
right workspace with an unwanted help screen in front of your windows.

Slightly off topic but still closely related to that bug : I was
looking for the rationale behind this keyboard shortcut change, I
skimmed through the latest unity and compiz commits and bug reports
and the unity-design mailing list but couldn't find anything, I must
have missed it while searching so if someone could point me to (or
tell me) why this change was made, I'd greatly appreciate it.

The CtrlAltArrows shortcuts is really universal on the Free
Desktop and has been there for years. I'm not saying that it's
forbidden to change it, but if someone did then he must want a pretty
good reason to do so. That's the info I'm looking for.

Title:
Shortcuts containing the Super key invoke the unity dash or help
  overlay

Status in Unity:
  Triaged
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
The unity dash and the Keyboard Shortcuts help overlay should not be
displayed when Super is pressed in combination with any other key -
even if it's just another modifier or if no other action is associated
with the combination. This situation has become worse after the new
keyboard shortcuts landed in today's updates.

  Cases:
  1. Press Super+Shift+Arrow to switch to a different desktop, releasing
the key combo very quickly. The unity dash will open.

  2. Hold Super+Shift while you use the arrow keys to find the
desktop you are looking for. The help overlay will display, covering
  the desktop.

  3. Press Super+Ctrl, then realize you were going for
Super+Shift, and depending on whether you've released Super or
not you'll be presented with the dash or the help overlay, when you
were obviously trying to do something else.

  4. Similarly, mistype Super+1 (to open, say, nautilus) as Super+q,
releasing quickly. You'll be shown the dash, even though you were
obviously trying to do something else. This does not happen when you
release Super+1 quickly, so I assume the dash is being inhibited
specifically when a shortcut exists for the combination - it should
also be inhibited when no shorcut is associated with it.

A fourth case that is not really part of this problem but is related:
  4. Press Super+Shift+Arrow to switch to a different desktop, releasing
the key combo less quickly than in point 1 above. The overlaid numbers in the
unity launcher will display (which is OK) - and remain there after having
released the keys (which is not).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 965328] Re: [UIFe] Change label of 'set up broadcast account'

2012-03-26 Thread Nekhelesh Ramananthan
I think this requires design decision from the ayatana team. Hence
marking incomplete until further feedback from the design team. Also we
need a UIFe exception since it involves string change.

** Summary changed:

- Change label of 'set up broadcast account'

Bug description:
The option for setting up accounts like facebook is disturbing. The term
broadcast account is not clear for new user.
We should replace 'broadcast' with 'social network'

This was pointed out in a Canonical's user study about the top
  showstoppers for new users:

  http://design.canonical.com/2010/06/when-new-users-first-encounter-
  ubuntu-5-show-stoppers/

  3. Use of jargon

During their exploration of Ubuntu, participants encountered words
they didn’t know, or didn’t expect, or terms that they had no use for:
examples included ‘Gwibber’,’broadcast’,’terminal’ and ‘server’. “You
lose me with ‘terminal’ and ‘server’.” one person said.

The use of such specialised language significantly influenced how
users perceived the brand and the intended audience for Ubuntu. Some
of the participants wondered whether Ubuntu was meant really for
expert users rather than for them.

The quicklists were modified to support the new desktop modifications.
And Unity at present does not support these modifications. Until then,
you wont be able to see the quicklist.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 942182] [NEW] Disable login sound option

2012-02-27 Thread Nekhelesh Ramananthan
Public bug reported:

The login sound in Precise can now be disabled by unchecking it in the
startup applications. However this is just a hack. Here is the
discussion on the ayatana mailing list.

I agree startup applications is not something that you would use
frequently and the only item inside is the Gnome Login Sound (which i
also believe is not the correct place for it either, as i was looking
how to disable startup sound a few days ago in more logical places like
user accounts or sounds but did not find it , so i had to do an online
instructions search...).

Agree, that's a terrible place for the login sound - it's a hack
surfaced to the user. Please file a bug.

Mark

I propose that it being integrated into the sound menu or the user
accounts menu as an option.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 942176] [NEW] Integrate Startup Applications into the gnome control center

2012-02-27 Thread Nekhelesh Ramananthan
Public bug reported:

As per the Ayatana mailing list, there was a discussion about
integrating the startup application menu option into the gnome control
settings since it would be more appropriate. A user does not change the
startup applications every day or more frequently than that. Hence it
does not seem logical to place it in the power cog menu for quick
access. It would nice for it to be integrated into the gnome-control-
center.

[UIFe] Please add unity quicklist item for 'new window' and maybe 'new

Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: firefox

A Unity static quicklist item that opens up a new window would be
nice. This would fire up firefox -new-window.

A proper rationale for this change is explained in comment #5 below.
Moreover, according to comments by didrocks on bug #709707, we need to
patch up desktop files to make up for the dropped 'Open a new window
of this application' feature in Unity. My patch to fix that in Unity
was rejected, and hence we had to follow the procedure of adding this
feature to only those applications which support multiple instances.

Once we get a UIFe for both the string additions, then we will upload
the change for 'Open a New Window', with the 'Open a New Tab' change
following soon. Both these changes have been announced to the ubuntu-
doc and ubuntu-translators MLs, and the translations for both of these
  have been set up on
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/Wanted/FirefoxDesktop . Moreover,
the translated strings for 3 locales have already been merged with the
desktop file in the attached debdiff. The 'Open a New Tab' change
later will also incorporate the translations for both the strings done
  till that point of time.

Title:
[UIFe] Please add unity quicklist item for 'new window' and maybe 'new
  tab'

2012-02-22 Thread Nekhelesh Ramananthan
It has been requested to include a quicklist option to Open a new Tab.
However I think this is redundant since you can do this from File-New
Tab and also from the new tab button present always. Hence I suggest the
following quicklist for firefox.

Open a new window
Open firefox in Safe Mode
Switch between Private/Normal mode

Firefox Web Browser

Unlock from Launcher
Quit

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 930289] [NEW] Sound Settings crashes with segmentation fault

2012-02-10 Thread Nekhelesh Ramananthan
Public bug reported:

sound menu in Precise. However when I try to launch sound setting, the
window disappers immediately without any warning. So I launched the

settings from it. It again disappers but I get the following message in

Title:
Sound Settings crashes with segmentation fault

Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I am running the latest Ubuntu Precise daily build. There was an
update today to the gnome-control-center and more specifically landing
the new sound menu in Precise. However when I try to launch sound
setting, the window disappers immediately without any warning. So I
launched the gnome-control-center from the terminal, and then launched
the sound settings from it. It again disappers but I get the following
  message in the terminal.
