[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2059401] [NEW] No sound from Jabra 510 speaker after upgrade to 23.10

2024-03-28 Thread Shaun Crampton
Public bug reported:

My Jabra 510 speaker used to work in older releases of Ubuntu but, since
upgrade to 23.10 and switch to pipewire, only the microphone works. If
I select the speaker output in settings or directly in Zoom I hear
nothing.

I found an upstream issue here:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pipewire/pipewire/-/issues/1984. Some
users report that pipewire master fixes the issue.

I tried creating a file /etc/pipewire/pipewire.conf and adding the
configuration from that ticket:

context.properties = {
default.clock.quantum = 2048
default.clock.min-quantum = 1024
default.clock.max-quantum = 4096
}

The Jabra speaker then started working in Zoom but the Ubuntu settings app
showed no devices at all. I'm guessing that the quantum setting worked around
the bug but creating the file overrode some other config that Ubuntu is relying
on. It's not clear how to configure pipewire on ubuntu, upstream seems to use
a different file layout.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1899766] Re: Xorg freeze after selecting large cursor

2020-10-15 Thread Shaun Crampton
Found the source of the v4l warnings; I was experimenting with
v4lloopback to use a camera as webcam. Disabled that and it's gone
away.

Unfortunately, /var/crash is empty and I didn't see any report from the
right time in the errors webpage.

After applying the change to add "Crash" to the crashdb.conf, I still
don't see a crash dump in /var/crash after repro.

However, I did find that the problem only repros in NVIDIA PRIME mode,
not Intel.

HI

My problem returned.
When I use analog I run pavucontrol-qt and then I select the correvt input
device.

I don't know why but it seems like the default audio selector does not
work

Sound works correctly using the internal speakers. If you plug in analog
headphones to the 3.5mm jack, there is no sound from the headphones or
the internal speakers. All relevant options are unmuted in Sound
Settings. The Speaker Test exhibits the same behaviour.

Analog headphones worked correctly on this system under 18.04.

Pulseaudio: 1:13.99.1-1ubuntu1
Device CID: 201704-25503

Steps to reproduce:

1. Connect an audio interface. I tried with BT headphones and speakers as well
as a USB microphone/output.
2. Make sure it's the one selected as "Output device"
3. Click "Test"
-> the test sound outputs from the internal laptop speakers (NOK)
4. Select "Speakers - Built-in Audio" as Output device and click "Test"
-> the test sound outputs from the internal laptop speakers (OK)
5. Try to switch back to the BT device and click Test
-> same result as in step 3

Tested with 2 different BT devices (one headset and one speaker) as
well as a USB audio interface (Zoom H2N microphone).

Attached are btmon logs captured during the procedure described above,
and pactl logs capture after step 7.

I was previously using 19.04 and 19.10 on this device and never
experienced this kind of issue.

Up to this morning, it was harder to connect the BT device, but once
connected, the sound would output on it as expected. Now, the BT
connection seems to work better, but I can't output the sound to the
BT device...

I tried to reboot the device, and also to suspend/resume, but in each
case, the BT device can connect back, but the sound is still output
from the internal laptop speakers, even when the BT device is selected
in the Sound settings.

Still seems to be the same.

I booted from a Manjaro USB Pendrive.
The sounds works then on all devices.

Back in Kubuntu 20.04 only normal speakers works and Bluetooth HEadsets.

Any audio via my Headphone Jack does not.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1873413] Re: hanging clipboard when CTRL+X / CTRL+V text between two Ubuntu Focal VMs or between laptop and VM

2020-04-19 Thread Ian Shaun
Hi Daniel,

> Since your setup only uses gnome-shell in the host and not the guest
it

Host is KDE Plasma, guest is GNOME => I have problems with clipboard
when I close virt-manager or shutdown the guest => no problems

So if I remove GNOME from the equation, then it's OK.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1873413] Re: hanging clipboard when CTRL+X / CTRL+V text between two Ubuntu Focal VMs or between laptop and VM

2020-04-17 Thread Ian Shaun
Hi Daniel,

Thank you for coming back to me so fast.

I don't think it's related to either of those bugs you mentioned. This
is happening only when I'm running virtual machines and have "virt-
manager" opened.

Is it a bug in gnome-shell? It's difficult to say. I'm not experiencing
the issue with non-desktop VMs (no X) so it might be something in X11.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1869814] Re: ubuntu-docs build failure - possible solution

2020-03-31 Thread Shaun McCance
So in general, syntax errors in translations just cause a warning, and
the original text is used. itstool only errors on syntax if you pass
--strict, and yelp.m4 doesn't even give you a way to pass --strict.

There's a chance this is itstool's fault. You do still have to do memory
management with libxml2's Python bindings, so stuff like double frees in
application code is possible. But since this crash happens during error
reporting for a language with many-byte UTF-8 chars, and since it
weirdly only happens with Python 3, I suspect it's this libxml2 bug:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=789714

ubuntu-docs failed to build during the second Focal Fossa test

  rebuild-20200327-focal/+build/18982738

It was itstool which failed to generate the localized zh_CN pages. If
  dropping zh_CN from ubuntu-help/Makefile.am, ubuntu-docs builds. But
excluding the Chinese pages is apparently not an acceptable solution.

The itstool package in focal {build-,}depends on python3. I built
itstool in a PPA with python2 instead, and in that PPA ubuntu-docs
  built fine without modifications:

  https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/ubuntu/ubuntu-docs/+packages

So the root cause seems to lie neither in ubuntu-docs nor itstool. I
would suspect that python3-libxml2 is buggy, but since itstool was
built against python2 in eoan, it's hard to tell if it's a regression.

Would building itstool against python2 be an acceptable workaround in
  focal?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1834583] Re: [eoan][regression] GNOME Shell hangs when closing a Java dialog; hung in (varying functions under) meta_stack_get_default_focus_window() from meta_window_x11_focus

2019-07-10 Thread Shaun Crampton
I was hitting this on disco-proposed. I found that it was resolved by
setting an APT priority of -1 for disco-proposed and doing a dist-
upgrade (i.e. downgrading all packages to disco-updates). I found that
downgrading mutter and gnome-shell was insufficient (I guess there are
lots of related libraries).

On my eaon system, closing any dialog in CLion (a Java program, which
might be relevant) results in GNOME Shell hanging. I believe this to
be a recent (in the last week or so, maybe?) regression.

  [ Test case ]

   $ sudo snap install clion
   - Start clion, open a file
   - Hit Ctrl+Shift+F
   - Select Directory -> Click "..." to select the path
   - Hit OK / Cancel
   - The dialog should show and the shell should be responsive

  [ Regression potential ]

The wrong window or no window is focused when a window is destroyed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1647453] [NEW] postgresql-common 154ubuntu1 checks for existence of /var/run/postgresql and terminates before it has change to create via 'start' function in /usr/share/postgre

2016-12-05 Thread Shaun Johnson
Public bug reported:

The init script /etc/init.d/postgresql in Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr has
check:

start|stop|restart|reload)
if [ -z "`pg_lsclusters -h`" ]; then
log_warning_msg 'No PostgreSQL clusters exist; see "man
pg_createcluster"'
exit 0
fi

pg_lsclusters -h command will return an empty string (to STDOUT) if
/var/run/postgresql does not exist.

/var/run/postgresql does not get initialized however until the init
script can reach a call to 'start' from /usr/share/postgresql-
common/init.d-functions:

start() {
# create socket directory
if [ -d /var/run/postgresql ]; then
chmod 2775 /var/run/postgresql
else
install -d -m 2775 -o postgres -g postgres /var/run/postgresql
[ -x /sbin/restorecon ] && restorecon -R /var/run/postgresql || true
fi

do_ctl_all start "$1" "Starting PostgreSQL $1 database server"
}

/var/run is a volatile file system by default in Trusty - so on reboot
/var/run/postgresql will not exist.

Essentially, postgresql will fail to start on reboot.

Wifi doesn't work after resume, fixed by forcing scan

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Often after resuming from suspend, my laptop (Samsung series 9) is
disconnected from the wifi and it doesn't seem to reconnect. Network
manager seems confused; it displays that it is connected, but it shows
the wrong access point (i.e. one of my neighbour's access points that
I don't even have the password for).

Running iwlist scan manually fixes the problem almost immediately and
network-manager starts showing the correct state (connecting, then
  connected to the right AP).

Very similar to bug 1332904 but apport recommended filing diags on a
  fresh bug report.

Wifi card appears to be "Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino

Title:

Advanced-N 6235 (rev 24)" according to lspci.

Title:

Advanced-N 6235 (rev 24)" according to lspci.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1332904] Re: Network manager stopped scanning for wifi networks

2016-11-19 Thread Shaun Crampton
I have the same symptom (wifi ends up disconnected after resume, cured
by running a scan manually) but I'm seeing this after upgrading to
16.04.

One oddity is that network-manager often shows that it thinks it is
connected to an AP after resume but it's not the correct one. It seems
to think it is connected to my neighbour's AP, for example. I wondered
if the APs had swapped channels due to autodetection or something.

Title:
Network manager stopped scanning for wifi networks

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After I resumed my laptop from suspend, it would not connect to wifi.
For a while, it seemed confused about its connection state, then it
displayed "disconnected", and showed that there were no wifi networks
  available (which is not true).

To debug the problem, I ran "nmcli d wifi list", which showed no results.
Then I ran "iwlist scan", which also showed no results.
Then I tried "sudo iwlist scan" - which showed all the wifi networks, and
actually caused the network manager to start working again. It connected to a
network successfully, and so on.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1277733] Re: Backport newer Wacom tablet support

I'm curious if this is being worked on for the next LTS?

  Backport newer Wacom tablet support

Status in unity-settings-daemon package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
In Gnome 3.10 and upwards the Wacom plugin in Gnome Control Center has
several improvements over previous versions. Button mapping has an on
screen display that helps you map the tablet buttons with a
representation of the tablet, and for Intuos 4 Wacom tablets that have
the little OLED displays, when the buttons are mapped the shortcut is
displayed on the tablet's OLED display.

Until Gnome 3.10 the only way to set the OLED displays at the same
time as button mapping was to compile 3rd party code and edit some
scripts, which is not ideal for the average Ubuntu user.

As Ubuntu 14.04 is the LTS version, it might be a good idea to
backport this feature to Ubuntu's patched gnome-shell-daemon and
control centre as it might be the last opportunity to provide this in
the Unity desktop until/if this appears in Unity 8.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1399077] [NEW] File copy dialog disappears, won't re-show, can't alt-tab to nautilus

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1378487] [NEW] x server keeps crashing

2014-10-07 Thread Shaun Overholtzer
Public bug reported:

While I am using Ubuntu the x-server keeps freezing on me. I still can
hear sounds coming from open applications and when I click blindly
around, I get responses; but from my perspective everything is frozen in
place. I am able to work around this by pressing ctrl-alt-f2 whenever it
happens, but it occurs so frequently that it inhibits any work or play
that I try to do on the system. Hopefully there is a fix to this
problem.

Thank you.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1196073] [NEW] signon-ui keeps spawning facebook security warning page in background

2013-06-29 Thread Shaun Crampton
Public bug reported:

For the last few days, I've noticed a page suddenly appear in my browser
on the facebook domain (happens every few hours). The page is on a
simple white background with the following text:

Success
SECURITY WARNING: Please treat the URL above as you would your password and do
not share it with anyone.

The URL looks like this: https://www.facebook.com/connect/...

Last time, it happened at the same time that signon-ui told me that I'd
been logged out of google so I thought, maybe signon-ui is renewing its
login on all my accounts and that's somehow triggering the facebook
page.

To verify that, I opened signon-ui and went to the facebook account. As
soon as I did, it spawned a new copy of the blank page and it did that
each time I tried to log in via signon-ui.

I tried revoking access to ubuntu in my facebook settings in the hope
that that would clear any bad state. After doing that, when I try to
log in via signon-ui it spawns the facebook confirmation page in the
browser instead of in signon-ui's in-window browser and when I click
through to the end then I get the security warning page.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 984785] Re: .goutputstream files polluting $HOME

2013-04-25 Thread Shaun Turnbull
Since installing 12.10 have noticed that a warning box indicates a process is
not shutting down as quickly as it should be ref signon-ui at shutdown time.
This could be related to the use of Ubuntu One sign in with relation to the
Backup app. If Backup is closed from desktop session an Ubuntu One sign in box
appears.
After noticing the hidden goutputstream files and doing a websearch then
looking here it appears there is no definite cause to this happening. Reading
comment #33 did motivate me to note my own observations but do not have
programming experience to help identify what is the actual cause of the
goutputstream files in home folder. Ref
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/984785/comments/33 Have
noticed these hidden files but did not see them as problem until reading some
of the comments here referring to this possibly being a security issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1114570] [NEW] DNS suddenly stops working despite adding 8.8.8.8 as an additional server

2013-02-03 Thread Shaun Crampton
Public bug reported:

I see this problem somewhere between once a week and once a day: DNS
lookups suddenly stop working causing the browser to fail to load pages
and time out.

After the last time it happened, I figured must be comcast's flaky DNS
so I added Google's DNS server 8.8.8.8 as an additional server via
network-manager but it just happened again. Even while it was broken, I
could still ping 8.8.8.8 so I'm not really sure what's going on.

I had a look in resolv.conf but it seems to be the same whether it's
working or not. Wither way it only has 127.0.1.1 as the nameserver. I
was expecting to see the actual nameserver in there but I guess Ubuntu
is using some sort of local proxy DNS? Since I'm not sure how DNS works
anymore, I'm not sure if this is the right package to report against.
Please advise.

Note, the dialog is not the same one that I get if I click shut down on
the cog menu. IT only seems to appear when I press the power button.

pledge to actively monitor this thread as long as there is help being
  offered.

Here are my notes so far.

  WHAT HAPPENED
lost network connection upgrading unattended from 9.4 to 9.10, Karmic
ifconfig says the adapter is UP, but there is no IPv4 DHCP address assigned,
nor can it get one. It isn't communicating with the router. The router
doesn't use security.

  lsusb yields
  Accton Technology Corp. SMCWUSB-G

from dmesg I found the chip is zd1211b

  tried
ifdown/ifup wlan0
sudo service samba restart
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart #No DHCPOFFERS received.
booting previous kernel
pci=noacpi in kernel boot option
commenting out the line in blacklist-ath_pci.conf

ping--says unknown host
unplug, re-plug USB adapter
configuring the connection manually
looking for proprietary drivers on the system with the Hardware Drivers
application

  checked
still works normally under Windows XP
/etc/network/interfaces file still the same as before upgrade
grub/menu.lst and backup are the same as before upgrade
wlan0 was not changed, not assigned a new name
iwlist scan detects my network

connection with wire (ethernet cable)--it was normal, got a connection
correct driver (module) is loaded for my wireless adapter chipset
driver is not blacklisted
threshold settings are the same in Windows
it appears network-admin is not installed
router dns is entered in /etc/resolv.conf

  All updates have been installed.

I will be happy to repeat anything I did for anyone, because I can't
be sure I put everything back to how it was when it worked before. I
had hoped by now something common had been found between all those who
  lost the connection.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 522479] Re: Upgrade to 9.10 caused wireless network to cease working

2012-07-07 Thread Shaun
I use 10.04 LTS now, but yes, I never got it fixed. I believe I got
around it by switching to wicd. I don't think I tried switching back to
using Network Manager in 10.04.

What is /e/n/i?

nor can it get one. It isn't communicating with the router. The router
doesn't use security.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1005510] Re: yelp steals focus, cannot be killed, hogs system

2012-05-28 Thread Shaun McCance
Almost certainly the old forkbomb bug:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=464111

There are two things different between nautilus gedit versus grsync
gnome-terminal:

1) The former use the help: scheme, the latter ghelp:
2) The former use Mallard, the latter DocBook

Something is causing Yelp not to recognize these documents, which makes
Yelp tell the system to open them, which in turn tells Yelp to open
them, ad infinitum.

Title:
yelp steals focus, cannot be killed, hogs system

Status in “yelp” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
When opened from certain applications (eg grsync and terminal) but not others
(eg nautilus and gedit), the yelp window stays empty, steals focus (forces
itself on forground) and cannot be force killed.
The system becomes unusable, although everything seems to continue working.
CPU load increases dramatically, Xorg is the main culprit
Only solution to get control back over the system is a Alt-SysRq-REISUB
reboot.
Nothing relevant in .xsession-errors; i have no idea where to look or what to
look for in other logs
Should i file a bug? Yelp? Xorg?
  Anyone else with this problem?
  Please help...
Here's a video showing what the problem is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgH4BmdF4iEfeature=youtu.be

I'll be happy to provide log entries, upon request.
I can't gdb backtrace since yelp started from terminal without arguments
works flawlessly.

Marking invalid as it is no longer occurring and I am unable to
duplicate the results after system updates over the past few days. Have
not reviewed update logs to see if this included a gnome-power-
statistics update or not.
