Title:
  fprintd allows unauthorized root access

Status in fprintd:
  Invalid
Status in fprintd package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:

For some reason, fprintd-enroll does not require any special authorization to
run.

This means that anyone coming across or stealing a machine with it
installed and which is currently logged in and for which fingerprints
are enabled for sudo authentication can elevate their access to
superuser by simply running fprintd-enroll and scanning their own
fingers. A subsequent sudo command will then give the new user
  access.

Even if sudo access is not granted through fingerprints, a thief could
get continued access to someone's account (for subsequent logging in)
if they can enroll new fingerprints without re-authenticating as the
  original user.

  This seems a security threat.

  second (useless) fingerprint scan

Status in fprintd package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
After upgrade to 16.04, any action which invokes the fingerprint
scanner (for me: unlocking screen, sudo, etc) will cause the scanner
to flash its green light until I scan my finger. Then the desired
  authentication and action take place.

However, the scanner continues to flash its green light until I scan
my finger a second time. However, this scan accomplishes nothing
except to make it stop flashing.

Also, when I log in (with my password, not fingerprint, otherwise I
won't have access to encrypted folders), the scanner flashes
  needlessly until I scan once.

Bug description:
libpam-fprintd is not a dependecy of fprintd, so it is possible to have

If this is so, the user account dialog in system setting still offers to
enroll fingerprints (which is technically correct) and then claims that the
user can login with the fingerprint reader (which is NOT correct).
The user account dialog should check for the presence of libpam-fprintd (not

Title:
Swipe messages are redirected to stdout (Dangerous!!)

Status in fprintd package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
This thing had just broken my apt lists (and muon not starting). I found
three extra lines with
"Swipe your finger across the fingerprint reader"
  in the generated /var/lib/apt/lists/some_repo_Packages

Here is the command I executed:-

  sudo dpkg-scanpackages . /dev/null | gzip -9c > "Packages.gz"

although i can fix this specific issue with
  sudo dpkg-scanpackages . /dev/null | grep -vE "^Swipe your finger" | gzip -9c
> "Packages.gz"

but I am not sure what it will break in future.

I will try to see if I can suggest some code fixes but have been away
from C for a few years.

  Thanks

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1745455] Re: [MIR] fprintd

Title:
  [MIR] fprintd

Status in fprintd package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Availability]

Already in universe, in sync with debian.

  Built for all supported architectures.

  [Rationale]

Ubuntu desktop team wants to enable fingerprint lockscreen unlock
support by default in GNOME installations and this includes the daemon
to which gnome-shell and gnome-control-center talk to (using DBus API)
and the PAM library to enable that.

  [Security]

  No known security issues.

Bug 1532264 is the only security-related bug here, but this doesn't
seem to be a real thing. Also it's all about distro management,
  nothing related to upstream project.

  https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/source-package/fprintd
  https://launchpad.net/fprintd/+cve

  [Quality assurance]

  - The Ubuntu Desktop bugs team is subscribed.

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fprintd
  https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?src=fprintd
  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/buglist.cgi?component=fprintd=libfprint

  No upstream tests or autopkgtests.

  [Dependencies]

  libfprint. See MIR bug #1745454

  [Standards compliance]

The package meets the FHS and Debian Policy standards (4.1.1)

  [Maintenance]

  - Actively developed upstream. Last release was 0.8.0 in September

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1669927] Re: fprintd fails often and there are traces in log files

Title:
fprintd fails often and there are traces in log files

Status in fprintd package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
After installation of fprintd, pam module and related middleware, and
enrolling fingerprint, it started to work within expected pattern in
command-line interface cases - in most cases it is enough one scan,
sometimes needs second scan and rarely third or even defaulting to
  password.

When it comes to login into Mate desktop environment (I use Mate on
Ubuntu standard distribution), it has significantly worse misses rate
  - password typed in approximately 60-70% cases.
