[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1242767] Re: computer freeze trying to exit gnome-control-center

2013-12-31 Thread vmc
christopher.m.penalver Post# 17:

I just now saw your request and have installed the latest Ubuntu 14.04
dated today, 12/31/2014

First I needed to install:
sudo apt-get install python-apport

Then I ran:

apport-collect 1242767

The apport finished without incident. I needed to boot using nomodeset ,
otherwise the screen would freeze
as soon as I started the debugging procedure.

Waiting for further instructions.

2013-11-29 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
vmc, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest
development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains,
could you please run the following command in the development release
from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will
automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this
report:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1242767] Re: computer freeze trying to exit gnome-control-center

2013-10-30 Thread Petr Nosek
funny. Same problem. Nouveau is randomly freezing

nosek@ubuntu-vbi:~$ uname -a
Linux ubuntu-vbi 3.11.0-12-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 9 16:20:46 UTC 2013
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

and nvidia-drivers binary don't work for me too. Monitor is flickering (binary
drivers) after boot and freezing too.

and this (/etc/modprobe.d/options) didn't help me. But this line worked for me
on Gentoo.
options nvidia NVreg_DeviceFileMode=432 NVreg_DeviceFileUID=0
NVreg_DeviceFileGID=27 NVreg_ModifyDeviceFiles=1
NVreg_RegistryDwords=PerfLevelSrc=0x

My graphics is GeForce 9650M GT, 1GB.

Nvidia drivers binary and nouveau are unstable for me. It's blocking for
me. I can't use my laptop in the production environment :(

Does anybody have an idea, how to resolve it? - quick solution?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1242767] Re: computer freeze trying to exit gnome-control-center

2013-10-29 Thread Ysaias Torres
Short story: About four days ago I installed the Nvidia-current display
driver and removed the Nouveau display driver and my system has not
frozen

Long story: To remove the “Nouveau display driver” first install the
“Nvidia-Current” display driver.
I ran into trouble because I removed the Nouveau -specific kernel DRM services
-runtime and the “system settings” stopped working. Then I ran into more
trouble because I removed the Nouveau display driver before installing the
Nvidia-Current. Somehow I was able to go to a shell and installed the
Nvidia-current driver with sudo apt-get -install nvidia-current (or something
like that). That made the graphics work but still the “system settings” did not
work. I reinstalled the Nouveau -specific kernel DRM services -runtime and the
“system settings' still did not work. I found out that I needed to install or
reinstall de Gnome-Control-Center and I did using “sudo apt-get -reinstall
gnome-control-center” or “sudo apt-get -install gnome-control-center”. Since I
kept uninstalling and reinstalling the “runtime”, the “reinstall” worked at one
point but then it didn't so I finally used the “install”. My system has been
working fine since then and has not frozen, but I'm not using the Nouveau
Display Driver

Sebastien,

Yes it appears to be a nouveau problem, but another bug report that I thought
was a nouveau problem, turned out to be a mesa problem:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1232940

How can we prove nouveau or something else?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1242767] Re: computer freeze trying to exit gnome-control-center

2013-10-24 Thread Ysaias Torres
I also have a freezing problem with Ubuntu 13.10

The freezes happen doing simple things.
It did also happen with Ubuntu 13.04
I have an Nvidia GeForce GT 240 (GT 215) video card
I did a system test and what got tested passed
Memory 7.8 GiB
Processor Intel Pentium(R) D CPU 3.20GHz x 2
Graphics Gallium 0.4 on NVA3
OS type 64-bit
Disk 23.6 GB

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1242767] Re: computer freeze trying to exit gnome-control-center

2013-10-24 Thread Tom Frost
running Mint 14 Cinnamon DE with exact same graphics card as VMC using
Nouveau driver
same AMD Athlon K8 X 2 Dual Core CPU

same problem occurs..screen freezes computer locks up

have to do CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to terminal to reboot

this doesn't always work...only way to get back up is to do hard power down
and then restart

also seen using Ubuntu 14.04

have NOT seen this using Ubuntu 12.04...yet
