This bug affected me on a previous release of Ubuntu, but it's no longer happen in an up to date Ubuntu 13.10. This bug always happends on 12.04.1. I uses also a french keyboard. According to french community documentation page (http://doc.ubuntu- fr.org/rhythmbox#la_barre_d_espace_ne_fonctionne_pas_pour_la_recherche), another workardound is to switch the default french keyboard map (français - variante) to another (french). I am also affected in Ubuntu Precise, but Ctrl + Space does not work for me, music plays / pauses anyway.
