In the attached patch, I've beefed up the existing (and add some some new) 
helper methods in {{FieldType}} related to sorting to depend on a new method 
that subclasses can override...

...so by default, arbitrary field types will not support this implicit min/max 
selection based on the asc/desc keyword -- but PrimativeFieldTypes (numerics, 
boolean, str, etc...) will support it.  Custom field types can also override 
this method to do so as well if they wish -- they can even override it to flip 
the mapping such that asc->max and desc->min.

The rest of the patch consists of:
* refactoring a lot of redundent/common code related to sorting into helper 
methods.  Notably: I refactored a lot of the details related to the logic of 
which numeric values to use for {{sortMissingLast}} and {{sortMissingFirst}} 
depending on the {{asc|desc}} choice into the existing {{NumberType}} enum so 
that they could be removed from a lot of concrete type classes.
* adding {{StrField.getSingleValueSource}} -- in my opinion i droped the ball 
on not including this in SOLR-2522.  Adding it now allows the same explicit 
sort syntax like {{sort=field(my_str,min) desc}} to work, and along with the 
other changes above, the new implicit multivalued sorting works automatically 
as well.
* dealing with some unique special case "sort missing" behavior in {{enum}} 
field types.
* beefed up tests of the explicit function syntax on strings, as well as the 
implicit sort syntax for all primative types



I think this patch is solid & pretty much good to go ... anyone have any 
concerns?

The only changes between the last patch and what i comitted was a one line 
addition to the ref guide page on working with currencies to point out that 
range faceting is supported as long as start & end are in the same currency.

Jira's down for maintence, so i can't report this in jira, but...

These TestClusterStateProvider.testAutoScalingConfig failures seem to reproduce 
fairly reliably for me -- across both master and branch_7x.  Attempting to 
generate new seeds I've never seen this test pass.

Picking one seed at random, and using git bisect starting at when this 
test seems to have landed in master points to SOLR-11063 as being the 
culprit that broke it...

I committed a new version of the SPT with variable arity. First level is always 
divided by 6 (faces), and the following levels are divided either in 4 
sub-cells, 16 sub-cells or 64 sub-cells.

Performance of the tree can be checked using test classes. There are two 
conclusions:

 * For polygons you should always use 4-arity. 
 * For points only, users might want to use 16-arity. you loose a bit of query 
performance but decrease of loading time and index size.

A bit about me: I work as data architect for a scientific organization in the 
branch of astronomy. Currently my contributions have been focused on the 
spatial features of Lucene, specially for spherical projections.


I hope to keep contributing in that area and maybe later on learn other parts
