Re: Poor tool detail on lucene.apache.org/solr/ site
Dear Tom, Speaking as a Solr user who has not even been very active on this list for a while, though we continue to use Solr, I am a little surprised to hear the sentiment in your message. In my experience, anything that I needed to know about Solr, from getting started with the basics to much more complicated requirements were answered by the online documentation, Google searches, and queries on this mailing list. Have yet to buy a Solr book, and have not seen anyone pushing people in this mailing list to buy a book. I think that books serve a different purpose, and are often useful, so not sure why they would not be referenced in the available resources. Further, among the several open-source mailing lists that I subscribe to , this list has been among the friendliest, and most welcoming to people. There are several regulars, including many Solr / Lucene committers, that take the time to help people. Maybe your criticism would be more constructive, and help improve the documentation if you would point out specifics of where it falls short. What did you try, and what issues did you have that were not addressed by the documentation? Did you try following up on this mailing list? Regards, Gora

What you want should not be very difficult, but it is probably easier to get started with Solr rather than using Lucene directly. Off the top of my head, you could add a token filter, possibly along with a custom analyser. This would convert input for both indexing and querying into the respective hashes. Please see http://wiki.apache.org/solr http://wiki.apache.org/solr/AnalyzersTokenizersTokenFilters I would also add that comparing hashes is not necessarily a good idea: What benefit does it get you, and what happens in case of collisions? So that people can see/try different features on the fly. And once in a day or so, we can clean up the index and re-index the default sets of documents. Because people could add some dummy documents to test their features. or we can disable updates so that people won't mess up the sample index. This way, latest features can be demoed with sample data. Your thoughts or does this already exists somewhere? I like the idea, but Solr is so vast, and people's use cases vary so much that I think it would be difficult to provide a comprehensive overview. It would also be a headache to maintain, especially if one is to allow users to add to the index, or tinker with the configuration. The default setup with Jetty, included in the codebase is usually a good starting point. Maybe that ought to be promoted more, as people seem to ask basic questions on this list that are already addressed there. I can't even predict all the good things that can come out of owning this layer of the app. The same way we couldn't predict all the changes that would come with the freedom of flexible indexing. I also don't think we need to drop the war right away - the first step is a mindset change. Start calling this an implementation detail in version whatever. It's hard to say who will have the time to do what work here when - but removing limits will allow many changes that are hard to impossible in a webapp world. Help, I'm stuck in a webapp and I can't get out! Completely agreed: As I said, I have seen the error of my ways :-) People arguing for this change are right, and your point about a mindset change is important. Being largely an end-user of Solr, for me it took the arguments put forward in this thread to make me realise the importance of such a mindset change. IMHO, the intermediate step of deprecation is also important so that users who do view Solr as a webapp, manage multiple installations from such a perspective, and might not be subscribed to the dev list are given reasonable warning.
