Re: Starting Introduction to Contributing to Apache OpenOffice Module
Hi Adroaldo Welcome to Apache OpenOffice. You can find general instructions under http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/index.html It looks like you are a marketer, so it's probabily the best to join the marketing mailing list of Apache OpenOffice. We are also at diverse Social Media like Google+, Facebook, Twitter and Xing. If you have questions, you can always ask. I wish you a nice start here. To answer a query on the en-Forum I have been searching for an archived version of AOO 3.4.1 (Swedish). All the archived versions I find, of whatever language, are of OOo 3.3 and earlier. I can't elaborate much more on that statement. http://www.openoffice.org/download/common/instructions.html When we released 3.4., we found some additional installation instructions which are included in the wiki version of the Linux install page (which now also needs some slight updating): http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/FAQ/Installation/How_do_I_install_OpenOffice.org_on_Linux%3F#Where_can_I_find_more_information_on_installing_OpenOffice_on_Linux.3F I would suggest if you find tutorials, or create tutorials yourself, for any Linux distros, that you put links to them on the above wiki page. if a distro installs LibreOffice when the user select OpenOffice it's a trademark violation and it is time to stop this... Just my opinion, they can do whatever they want but we should stop them to use our brand. If the PMC wants to do this then we should discuss this with Shane on the trademarks@ list. We probably want to see if the distributors are willing to cooperate first. What do you expect? We should look deeper into the process how the installation or update if openoffice/libreoffice works in the distributions (actual versions) If people tell us that they don't get the office they want then we have to analyse what the do. Then we have to explain how they get what they want So we can solve most of the problems. Please NO trademark war against Linux distributions. nobody wants a trademark war, we simply want that it is taken careful and don't underestimate the power of our brand. I really would like to collaborate with the distros and also with volunteers of LibreOffice. New Features and Enhancements video
Howdy, Well, I decided that I could go ahead and let DARPA-NET have another bite at me today, rather then waiting for next week, so took a little walk into town. That and I wanted to cover the basic template first. Here is an example of what I mean. https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bx7ZNEXlmR0IUWt5cnUxQ3JNbnM/edit?usp=sharing There is an opening 8 seconds with the logo on a non-white background: 1 - is that acceptable 2 - is the ASF tag line acceptable Then there is what would be the body of the piece - a full white background, as this logo really doesn't work to well otherwise it seems to me. 1 - I assume the logo is not an issue here, but thought I'd double check. 2 - I changed the ASF tagline to blue, as you can see 2a - I wonder if I may drop that (the ASF tagline) on the body frames, leaving it on the opening and then bringing it back for the credits at the end, as I will include sub-titles with this piece (in English) and that space would be the place for these to display of course. Anyway, that is enough for now and to get things started. Ok - this time it will be a few days before I will be able to get back to folks.. Thanks //drew

I have followed the discussions in here, and have seen a number of not wanted changed in our important artifacts happen. I think it is important, that items like our logos, release notes etc. cannot be changed by accident. I believe it happens by accident and that could avoided with a simple measure. It might be useful to think of this in terms of Review-Then-Commit (RTC) versus Commit-Then-Review (CTR) rules. Once we clarify these and when they apply, then we can discuss whether additional technological means are needed to enforce this. For the wiki the general rules is CTR for all users with an account. No additional karma is needed. The for resources in Subversion the general rule is CTR for all commiters. Additionally, the public can submit patches, to the list, attached to BZ issues, or using the CMS anonymous submission tool. This then is effectively RTC since a committer must first reviews the patch. Those are the default postures, but there are exceptions. For example, as we approach a Release Candidate we switch into RTC for the trunk code. We only make changes after a bug has been proposed and approved as a release blocker on the dev list. So we could simply adopt a RTC for certain resources at certain times. For example, Release Notes once a release occurs, are RTC. The project logos, once approved and published, are RTC. If we agree to such things there are lightweight ways of reminding ourselves. For example, we could have a README file in directories that are RTC that explain this. That should be enough for conscientious, well-intentioned volunteers, I am normally strong against limitations, but I would like to suggest that these items are moved to one (or more) subdirs, where the commit right is restricted e.x. to PMC members or even less. Doing so will not prohibit anybody from making their changes but simply avoid that the changes are product wide. Personally I think this is a RTC versus CTR question. This distinction is a tool that we don't invoke as often as we could. Maybe that would be sufficient, at least in SVN. Also, I think even a PMC member should be following CTR rules when it is in effect. I don't think of a PMC member as a higher class of committer in terms of what they have access to. I think you misunderstood me. I agree with the RTC/CTR discussion, but that does not prevent the accidential commit, I think it has happened to most of us, that we commit our changes, and we overlook that another file is also committed. I disagree that we have a a problem with accidental overwrites in SVN in cases where it is clear that RTC is in effect. I think the problem is that it is not clear when CTR is in effect. And, I think in most people's minds, knowing when to go from CTR to RTC is not particularly clear either. There are some implicit assumptions -- like don't mess with SNAPSHOT builds -- but I think it would be better if we stated this explicitly. I also suggest that any artifact we feel should be considered source -- like the new logo svg files -- be put, if not in /trunk, in an SVN area that has some distinguishing name so that it is clear to committers this is really a RTC area. If you are using svn directly do svn log -r 1388589:1384746 in your repository. Or if were using git-svn you could use the wonderful gitk tool or its relatives like qgit. It is not clear to me, what to do. I have not got a local repository, which has that range. Therefore I look for a way to get that information from http://svn.apache.org/ I can jump to a special revision. Then I can move up and down, but that contains the commits of all projects, not only those from OpenOffice. The range between r1384746 and r1388589 has over 3000 commits, so not doable. I don't think that it will help to prevent every error of this kind. Also, I don't see how your solution helps with truly accidental commits. Surely PMC members make errors as well? Marcus what about updating the feature section? You means this text? Features Cross platform (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X) 170+ Languages Extensions available Commercial support available I would also add a line with Templates available as it is linked on the bottom of the webpage. Also at least a new screenshot with the sidebar would be great. Marcus - To unsubscribe, e-mail: dev-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: dev-h...@openoffice.apache.org
Update 3.4.1 - 4.0.0
Hi, with AOO 3.4.1 DE with system integration under Win 7 Pro x64 I just tested the upgrade mechanisme to 4.0. After klicking on ... Update available (German: ... Update verfügbar) at the right in the menue bar and then in the following dialog on Download (Herunterladen), there is shown the web-page http://www.openoffice.org/de/?utm_source=AOO3_4_1_deutm_medium=Clientutm_campaign=Upgrade (1) The prominent headline is Announcing Apache OpenOffice 3.4 (2) There is no prominent link to download AOO 4. I think unexperienced users are disturbed and perhaps they don't know how to go on. Only after klicking on Download in the menue bar of this page with Produkte Download Support ... there is the download link for AOO 4 Windows (EXE) and Deutsch. But furthermore I suggest to make the link for all platforms, _languages_... more prominent for those (like me) who install several language packs (and do not check all text on the page). -- Grüße Günter Marxen - To unsubscribe, e-mail: dev-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: dev-h...@openoffice.apache.org

I'm just saying that if you are the originator of a feature then you get press coverage twice: the 1st time when you initially release it and then a 2nd time when another project copies it. We're seeing that now. A specific example, Ars Technica, on the LO 4.1 release: http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/07/libreoffice-4-1-is-released-borrows-new-sidebar-from-openoffice/ Your comment there doesn't help anyone. Peter Headline: LibreOffice 4.1 is released, borrows new sidebar from OpenOffice / 3,000 bugs fixed in latest LibreOffice, many by Apache developers. Regards, -Rob Personally, I think it is an advantage to get such press coverage. Maybe you disagree. But since this is a thread about press coverage, such observations are entire on topic.
