Re: Starting Introduction to Contributing to Apache OpenOffice Module

2013-07-25 Thread Raphael Bircher

Hi Adroaldo

Welcome to Apache OpenOffice. You can find general instructions under
http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/index.html

It looks like you are a marketer, so it's probabily the best to join the
marketing mailing list of Apache OpenOffice. We are also at diverse
Social Media like Google+, Facebook, Twitter and Xing.

If you have questions, you can always ask. I wish you a nice start here.

Greetings Raphael

My name is Adroaldo Flores do Prado, I am a Brazilian Plywood Import and Export

I am volunteering for the Apache project, because I believe I could help the
project and mainly the future users, advertising the benefits of open source
Projects in my blog, also on other social medias I am involved in. Anyway I
could easily translate articles from English to Portuguese and any other tasks

I am looking forward to hearing your comments and suggestions.

Legacy (3.4.1 versions)

2013-07-25 Thread Rory O'Farrell

To answer a query on the en-Forum I have been searching for an archived version
of AOO 3.4.1 (Swedish). All the archived versions I find, of whatever
language, are of OOo 3.3 and earlier.

Perhaps I am just having a bad day (yes, from other aspects!), but if not, the
3.4.1 versions ought be made available in archives or legacy links.

The Install Guide covers installation on Linux -- but not
from a distro specific perspective. These instructions work
very well for some distros and not well for others. I can't
elaborate much more on that statement.

 http://www.openoffice.org/download/common/instructions.html

When we released 3.4., we found some additional installation
instructions which are included in the wiki version of the
Linux install page (which now also needs some slight
 updating):

 http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/FAQ/Installation/How_do_I_install_OpenOffice.org_on_Linux%3F#Where_can_I_find_more_information_on_installing_OpenOffice_on_Linux.3F

I would suggest if you find tutorials, or create tutorials yourself, for
any Linux distros, that you put links to them on the above
 wiki page.

if a distro installs LibreOffice when the user select
OpenOffice it's a trademark violation and it is time to stop
 this...

Just my opinion, they can do whatever they want but we should
stop them to use our brand.

If the PMC wants to do this then we should discuss this with
 Shane on the trademarks@ list.

We probably want to see if the distributors are willing to
 cooperate first.

 What do you expect?

We should look deeper into the process how the installation or
update if openoffice/libreoffice works in the distributions (actual
 versions)

If people tell us that they don't get the office they want then we
have to analyse what the do. Then we have to explain how they get
 what they want

So we can solve most of the problems.

Please NO trademark war against Linux distributions.

nobody wants a trademark war, we simply want that it is taken careful
and don't underestimate the power of our brand.

I really would like to collaborate with the distros and also with
volunteers of LibreOffice.

The question is how wec an collaborate with LO best, the current
approach how they take stuff from AOO is damaging open source in
general. They can take it but the communication how they do it is key
here. And to be honest I have no respect for this but I also believe
that this is only driven by a smaller group of people and not the
broad LO community.

I hope they will see the benefit of closer collaboration in the future.

Linux distros will hopefully be more open if we can find maintainers
who are interested to help and improve our building and packaging
process. This is a minimal requirements to find the way back into the
distros. Maybe not all but the ones that are open and believe in open
source.

As I told some weeks ago we need volunteers to maintain Apache
 OpenOffice in each GNU/Linux Distributions.

agree that is key for all further steps to fnd the way back in any
distro. We need people who are interested to help here in this area

The problem is mostly the lack of volunteers which are
willing to package and maintain AOO among these distros'
 developers.

Gentoo has a precompiled version of AOO packaged:

Besides that, there exist some user maintained packages for
Ubuntu, Arch, Slackware and other distros.

I tried Chinese download page http://www.openoffice.org/zh-cn/download/ .
But it looks I can not simply replace the global parameter VERSION with

The design of the Chinese download page is similar to en download page. So
I just wondering what makes 4.0.0 appear in en download page?

For 3.4.x, people should be sent to
http://archive.apache.org/dist/incubator/ooo/
http://archive.apache.org/dist/openoffice/
(if you publish it online, please post both links; it is possible that
the formed is merged with the latter in the next days).

It is good to tell people that, if they are looking for an older version
due to missing language support, it is often easy to help and get
OpenOffice 4 released in their language. All instructions at

http://openoffice.apache.org/translate.html
and we can make (or already have) snapshot builds available in
unreleased languages for volunteers who want to try them out.

How can I get a list of commits, that happen between r1384746 and r1388589?

If you are using svn directly do
svn log -r 1388589:1384746
in your repository.

Or if were using git-svn you could use the wonderful gitk tool or its
relatives like qgit.

nobody wants a trademark war, we simply want that it is taken careful

I really would like to collaborate with the distros and also with
 volunteers of LibreOffice.

The question is how wec an collaborate with LO best, the current
approach how they take stuff from AOO is damaging open source in
general. They can take it but the communication how they do it is key
here. And to be honest I have no respect for this but I also believe
that this is only driven by a smaller group of people and not the
 broad LO community.

That isn't a problem caused by the GNU/Linux-distributionsor their
maintainers. It's caused by some LO-developers.

I hope they will see the benefit of closer collaboration in the future.

That would be the best - especially for the users of a Free office-suite.

Linux distros will hopefully be more open if we can find maintainers
who are interested to help and improve our building and packaging
process. This is a minimal requirements to find the way back into the
distros. Maybe not all but the ones that are open and believe in open
 source.

We have to find out the needs and necessities of the distros. And we
need people who are willing and able to package AOO in the distros' way.
That's not easy.

As I told some weeks ago we need volunteers to maintain Apache
 OpenOffice in each GNU/Linux Distributions.

agree that is key for all further steps to fnd the way back in any
distro. We need people who are interested to help here in this area

There a not a lot of people in the world who are able and willing to do
that. AOO (and LibrOffice also) is really a beast of code.

Michael

For the record, it seems that the fonts usually delivered by default (in

I've filed a bug: https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=122835

Many of them are freelancers, paid by the word, not by the hour.
Using prepared materials, whether a press release or release notes,
makes their work easier and faster. So the first wave of articles
will be summaries or even copypaste of our materials, with a little
bit of added commentary and analysis. This is expected.

Anyone who is serious about doing a real review of the product, it
will take them a few more days. We should see that eventually. But
right now it is about being first, reporting the news while it is
still new. Deeper analysis will come later.

  Hi all,

I've created a new webpage to offer all possible download links for a
  release version:

  http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/download/test/other_tables.html

This looks super! A great job.

  Advantages:
  - created automatically, depending on the respective available
languages for the release version, controlled via the globalvars.js
 file
-- no manual changes in the other.html for every new release

  - contains links to all checksum files
-- no separate webpage just for checksum files necessary

  - all possible downloads for a respective language and OS in a single
 place

New Features and Enhancements video

2013-07-25 Thread Drew Jensen
Howdy,

Well, I decided that I could go ahead and let DARPA-NET have another bite
at me today, rather then waiting for next week, so took a little walk into
town.

That and I wanted to cover the basic template first.

Here is an example of what I mean.
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bx7ZNEXlmR0IUWt5cnUxQ3JNbnM/edit?usp=sharing

There is an opening 8 seconds with the logo on a non-white background:
1 - is that acceptable
2 - is the ASF tag line acceptable

Then there is what would be the body of the piece - a full white
background, as this logo really doesn't work to well otherwise it seems to
me.
1 - I assume the logo is not an issue here, but thought I'd double check.
2 - I changed the ASF tagline to blue, as you can see
2a - I wonder if I may drop that (the ASF tagline) on the body frames,
leaving it on the opening and then bringing it back for the credits at the
end, as I will include sub-titles with this piece (in English) and that
space would be the place for these to display of course.

Anyway, that is enough for now and to get things started.

Ok - this time it will be a few days before I will be able to get back to
folks..

Thanks

This is not really clear in our Orientation modules. And, I think in most

SNAPSHOT builds -- but I think it would be better if we stated this

I also suggest that any artifact we feel should be considered source --
like the new logo svg files -- be put, if not in /trunk, in an SVN area

You need to reset the file associations.
Right click (ctrl/click) on the document you wish to open.
Click on Get Info
In the dialogue window that opens, under Open with: select from the drop down menu
OpenOffice.app.

Then click on the button Change All...

You will need to do this for all file types you wish to open with Apache
OpenOffice.
I assume you are trying to open .doc files since you can open them with Pages. If they are
files you created with OpenOffice, you should safe in the native .odt format.

If you are using svn directly do
 svn log -r 1388589:1384746
in your repository.

Or if were using git-svn you could use the wonderful gitk tool or its
relatives like qgit.

It is not clear to me, what to do. I have not got a local repository,
which has that range. Therefore I look for a way to get that information
from http://svn.apache.org/

I can jump to a special revision. Then I can move up and down, but that
contains the commits of all projects, not only those from OpenOffice.
The range between r1384746 and r1388589 has over 3000 commits, so not
doable.

I use git svn.

clear either. There are some implicit assumptions -- like don't mess with
SNAPSHOT builds -- but I think it would be better if we stated this
explicitly.

I also suggest that any artifact we feel should be considered source --
like the new logo svg files -- be put, if not in /trunk, in an SVN area
that has some distinguishing name so that it is clear to committers this is
really a RTC area.

I like that idea. Something like /branding, a peer of /trunk and
/ooo-site. That can hold the branding related source. But we can

Update 3.4.1 - 4.0.0

2013-07-25 Thread Guenter Marxen

Hi,

tested the upgrade mechanisme to 4.0.

After klicking on ... Update available (German: ... Update
verfügbar) at the right in the menue bar and then in the following
dialog on Download (Herunterladen), there is shown the web-page

http://www.openoffice.org/de/?utm_source=AOO3_4_1_deutm_medium=Clientutm_campaign=Upgrade

  (1) The prominent headline is Announcing Apache OpenOffice 3.4

  (2) There is no prominent link to download AOO 4.

I think unexperienced users are disturbed and perhaps they don't know
how to go on.

Only after klicking on Download in the menue bar of this page with
Produkte Download Support ... there is the download link for AOO 4
Windows (EXE) and Deutsch.

But furthermore I suggest to make the link for all platforms,
_languages_... more prominent for those (like me) who install several
language packs (and do not check all text on the page).
