 a beta (or any other pre-release build) has a defined date of expiry and
 shouldn't be used after this.
 So +1 to delete from every mirror server.

 I agree we should remove it both from dist and from SF.

done

 *Maybe* we can save it (or just a few files) on the archive for
 historical reasons. ;-)

 We voted on 4.1.0-beta. This makes it a release we should archive. Our
 archive at
 http://archive.apache.org/dist/openoffice/4.1.0-beta/
 already has the source and all checksums. Binary files are missing. They
 should be moved there too for completeness. And then we can forget about
 the beta.

the problem is that I made a mistake and that the binaries are not
longer available on the server. Because it is very time consuming and
the binaries are for convenience only I will not upload them again. We
should delete the checksum files for the binaries as well and should
keep the src release only.

Dear Sir.
I want to let you know that I can't load OpenOffice 4.1.0.
Get a Error message Error 1316.A network error occurred while attempting
to read from the File C:\windows\installer\openoffice401.msi

I am using a desk top computer with windows 8.1.
I have OpenOffice 4.0.1 working now with no problems.
Have been using OpenOffice for at least 10 years.
Works good.

Checking my files I found that openoffice401.msi was not in the
folder C:\windows\installer.
I was able to copy the file openoffice401.msi from the desk top folder
to  C:\windows\installer.
I tried to install the program Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.0_Win_x86_install_en-US.exe
again and got the same error message.

Is this a Windows 8.1 problem or what?

Thank You
Lewis

Re: [PROPOSAL] Do not drop languages in minor releases

2014-05-12 Thread Tal Daniel
In brief:

Currently, a translation is released when it reaches 100%.
There were a few ideas when to include and exclude a translation in a
release (different for major, and minor). Some suggestions where to
continue to release even if there's no 100%, and there's an active
community of translator for a language. Rob suggested even to get an OK
from the trans. community of each language.

Rules should be simple, though, as Jürgen Schmidt commented, since it cause
effort to manage track too many rules, in addition to manually build the
translation releases each time.

Andrea proposed a more flexible strategy, which emphasizes the importance
of continuing the language support over versions (at least in minor
releases), who may find it annoying, for example, that there was Hebrew
support in AOO 3.3, but not in AOO 3.4 (grr@#$!!).
+ That's a strong point, TMHO.

+ In addition to Andrea's concern about being in touch with the community
of translators,
as a solution, maybe we should build a list of private emails. For example,
I wonder if translators would prefer to add their private email to the
cwiki page of volunteers, instead of just subscribing to the L10N list.
This would allow the PMC to send important updates/requests directly to
translators (e.g. a wake-up call, before a release).

 There are several ways of answering your question. I'll take the high
 road, and presume, for argument's sake, that the main Linux
 Distributors (the distros) are acting in good faith and chose to
 align themselves with what they believed to be a sustainable
 community organization ca. 2011.

 These main distros that most in the West think of when they think of
 Linux, I'd guess, include Canonical's Ubuntu, Red Hat's Fedora
 Project, and KDE.* (I didn't check SuSE.) None includes Apache
 OpenOffice.

 Well KDE is a window system and not a distro. It is used on a variety of
 distros including openSUSE, Fedora, Ubuntu (Kubuntu), etc. But, your
 statement is true enough that no major Linux distribution includes Apache
 OpenOffice.

For Ubuntu, please register / log into Launchpad and visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1131253 where you can subscribe
for notifications and select that the bug affects you too and thus
generate a higher bug heat, hopefully persuading packagers that AOO is
important to package into the (universe?) repository. The bug gets 4
points of heat per person affected and 2 points per person subscribed
to receive notifications, so we only need 9 more people to do this,
for it to get 60 points which will put it on the first page of
needs-packaging bugs ordered by bug heat :).

  1) We do a blog whose main subject is AOO and Linux and interview some

  Thoughts?

  IMHO, most users just take what's provided by default. Unless it is too
  buggy.
  So I think that basically, we are back to the question: why AOO is still
  not
  available in the standard packages?

  As long as it is not easily available, users won't bother removing
  another
  application to install AOO. Especially if it involves command line (to
  install but also sometimes to remove the default suite).
 [..]

 On an initial Debian installation, if GNOME is selected, it will
 install LO by default.

 Accordingly the burden falls on the user to remove LO:

 $ sudo su
 $ apt-get purge libreoffice-base-core libreoffice-common
 libreoffice-core libreoffice-draw libreoffice-gnome libreoffice-gtk
 libreoffice-impress libreoffice-java-common libreoffice-math
 libreoffice-writer

 I have no experience with Debian as a distro, only with Debian derivatives
 such as Ubuntu. As far as I know, it is only necessary to
 sudo apt-get purge libreoffice-core
 to remove all libreoffice, before installing OpenOffice.

 Note, however that, once downloaded, it is not intuitive for a
 relatively novice (i.e., Ubuntu user) to install ApacheOO since after
 expanding its *.tar.gz file, there appears a directory: en-US (or
 whatever the locale selected).

 The user then must become root (super user) or prefix su to install at
 /opt/ privileged directory:

 $ sudo su
 $ dpkg -i en-US/DEBS/*deb

 AND then still there is no link for the the user with normal
 privileges to start up ApacheOO from the normal PATH directory
 /usr/bin/. And thus root privilege is required again to create the
 appropriate symlink there; the most simple one (I think) and that
 would not be overwritten by an subsequent (accidental installation of
 LO) would be:

 $ sudo su
 $ cd /usr/bin
 $ ln -s /opt/openoffice4/program/soffice  apacheeoo
 $ cd /opt/openoffice4/program/soffice
 $ ln -s soffice.bin apacheoo.bin

 The above just creates a symbolic link required due to our use of
 apacheoo instead of the default soffice/soffice.bin that is used by LO
 as well.

 Now the Ubuntu user would have to create executable icons for the
 ApacheeOO productivity apps to match the default LO that is now
 removed. On the other hand, those of us who don't care simply start
 ApacheOO from a shell as a normal user now:

 $ apacheoo

 Is it obvious now -- as MS did before by preinstalling its own
 constrained software and denying users the freedom of choice -- why
 ApacheOO may be lacking traction on GNU/Linux?

 Best Professional Regards.

 Leading Open Source office application and personal productivity suite
 for Windows, Mac, and Linux reaches a major adoption milestone

 17 April 2014 --Forest Hill, MD-- The Apache Software Foundation
 (ASF), the all-volunteer developers, stewards, and incubators of more
 than 170 Open Source projects and initiatives, announced today that
 Apache OpenOffice™ has been downloaded 100 million times.

 Apache OpenOffice is the leading Open Source office document
 productivity suite, available in 32 languages on Windows, OS X, and
 Linux. OpenOffice includes a word processor (Writer), a spreadsheet
 (Calc), a presentation editor (Impress), a vector graphics editor
 (Draw), a mathematical formula editor (Math), and a database
 management program (Base). As Open Source software, Apache
 OpenOffice is available to all users free of charge; the C++ source
 code is readily available for anyone who wishes to enhance the
 applications.

 Originally created as StarOffice by StarDivision and after further
 development as an Open Source product under the name OpenOffice.org,
 OpenOffice entered the Apache Incubator in 2011 and graduated as an
 Apache Top-level Project in October 2012.

 I'm extremely pleased to see us reach this major milestone in less
 than two years, said Andrea Pescetti, Vice President of Apache
 OpenOffice. This is a testament to our community volunteers: the
 hundreds of talented individuals who make Apache OpenOffice what it
 is, who write the code, test for bugs, translate the user interface,
 write documentation, answer user questions and manage our servers. We
 remain committed to offering the successful combination of reliability
 and innovation that so many users appreciate.

 Official downloads at openoffice.org are hosted by SourceForge, where
 users can also find repositories for more than 750 extensions and over
 2,800 templates for OpenOffice.

 By continuously improving Apache OpenOffice Extensions and Templates
 sites we show how committed we are about providing projects with what
 they need most, said Gaurav Kuchhal, General Manager for Slashdot and
 SourceForge. We are happy to help open source projects to grow, no
 matter where they are hosted or developed. We have been serving over
 122 Million downloads for the Apache OpenOffice project, with daily
 peaks of about 250,000 and we are committed to providing products and
 services that demonstrate our dedication to technical excellence.

 Apache OpenOffice reaching 100 million downloads is a remarkable
 achievement in the project's 29-year history and testament to the
 power of successful Open Source communities, said Shane Curcuru,
 Apache OpenOffice mentor and ASF Vice President of Brand Management.
 We extend our gratitude to all the volunteers and users whose
 contribution, feedback, support, engagement, and enthusiasm keeps us
 focused on delivering great software. We couldn't celebrate this
 milestone without them!

Took a longer Time, but here are the answers to your questions.
You remember this ;-)

- who is going to use them?

** Raphael Bircher, openoffice-pmc-member, Committer (rbircher), Switzerland
** Jörg Schmidt, Committer (joesch), Germany
** PrOOo-Box-Team (Jan-Christian Wienandt, Jörg Schmidt, myself, Detlef Nannen)
** FSFE-Team (http://fsfe.org/index.en.html)
** Mechthilde u. Michael Stehmann Working for events in Belgium an Rhine-Area
** Sidux-ev. (http://sidux-ev.org/)

- where will these people use them (list of events, conferences)?

** Kieler OpenSource und Linux-Tage (2d) at Kiel
** Berlin, Linuxtag at Berlin
** Linuxtage at Chemnitz
** Cebit at Hannover, (planned 2015 or 16, we need support)
** OpenRheinRuhr at Oberhausen
** FROSCON at Brüssel (Bruxelles, Belgium)
** Augsburg, Linux-Infotag (South-Germany)
** Linuxday at Dornbirn (Austria)
** Linuxwochen (Linuxweeks) in Austria (planned in 2015)

- what materials you are producing ? (you already sent this in the ZIP file)

** no changes in the last weeks

- an estimate of costs?

** 1000 Flyer = EURO 70 / $100
We prefer to order two or three times a year this amount.
So we don't have to discard too much when changes are made.

** 5000 Flyer = EURO 130  / $180
** 1 Flyer = EURO 230 /$320

We order new flyers at this time.

Is it also possible to produce Beachflags or RollUps. We need this for
the same purpose as the Flyers. We have here two old RollUps, but with
the old logo. In addition, the RollUps are pretty worn out. New cost
per piece approx 110 euros incl. delivery.
Example:

I would recommend styling the select boxes, here is an example of how CSS
can style them:
http://bavotasan.com/2011/style-select-box-using-only-css/

The code should be something like the following:
div class=styled-select
select
 ...
/div

and the css:
#lang #os, #ver {
background: transparent;   width: 268px;
padding: 5px;   font-size: 16px;
line-height: 1;   border: 0;
border-radius: 0;
height: 34px;   -webkit-appearance: none;
}

thanks for your design suggestion and example. I'll add this to the
todo-list.

  Ok, maybe the subject is bit melodramatic but after some of the
  twisted
  things we read about, basically how non-supportive either AOO is of
  Linux,
  or Linux is non-supportive of AOO, here's what I'm thinking.

  1) We do a blog whose main subject is AOO and Linux and interview some
  of
  our Linux volunteers/users (hopefully a nice dstro cross section --
  Fedora, Ubuntu. openSUSE, Mint?) and ask them why they're using AOO
  and
  how
  did they find the installation given that it isn't available in their
  existing repositories.

  -- or --

  2) We do a Linux centered blog on what support we provide for Linux,
  what
  Linux packages AOO provides wtih additional distribution details, and
  why
  they're not in repositories for distributions. On the latter point,
  I'm
  thinking talk about whose job this is, etc.

  I think we really should do something a bit more visible on this
  topic,
  and
  hopefully some of the open source press can pick it up.

 $ sudo su
 $ apt-get purge libreoffice-base-core libreoffice-common
 libreoffice-core libreoffice-draw libreoffice-gnome libreoffice-gtk
 libreoffice-impress libreoffice-java-common libreoffice-math
 libreoffice-writer

 $ sudo su
 $ dpkg -i en-US/DEBS/*deb

 $ sudo su
 $ cd /usr/bin
 $ ln -s /opt/openoffice4/program/soffice  apacheeoo
 $ cd /opt/openoffice4/program/soffice
 $ ln -s soffice.bin apacheoo.bin

 $ apacheoo

 Is it obvious now -- as MS did before by preinstalling its own
 constrained software and denying users the freedom of choice -- why
 ApacheOO may be lacking traction on GNU/Linux?

 Best Professional Regards.
