It does have a reputation for being cool. This is justified in many
cases, less justified in others. I know some developers who refuse to
work with SVN in principle; true, maybe they would be perfectly
comfortable with git-svn or even with a recent version of SVN; but
relying on SVN is a factor that may scare new developers away. That
said, before moving we should ensure that those who work on the code are
happy: new developers can perfectly use git already now to checkout the
code and to submit patches.

This is usually caused by corruption in the User Profile and can be
fixed by resetting the Profile. For details on doing this see the

I'm just curious about these statements. Have potential new developers
remarked on this to you?
Since most IDEs support a variety of version control mechanisms, I'm
wondering how the suggestion to switch to git might have emerged. But,
again, I have never used git and it might be the coolest thing ever -- I
have NO idea! :)

I think there are many developers who only use Git and clamor for the
familiar. There is also tool religion involved.

It takes some brain rewiring to get your head around how git works for
an user, but it becomes easy after that.

The plus is that every working copy has the entire history, not just
the latest of things. Synchronizing with a master is an interesting
process, and handling branches is particularly easy if you are careful.
Collisions are handled in an intriguing way too.

It is easy to start a branch in a working copy for testing an idea
and getting it working, then merging it back to the main branch
before synchronizing with an upstream master. This doesn't clutter
the upstream and if you are careful to keep pulling down any changes
from upstream before merging your branch, it can go very nicely.

I did a Microsoft Virtual Academy on-line class on Git support in
Visual Studio. That was a trip.

RE: OOo4Kids & OOoLight Status

2015-02-16 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
I recommend something more neutral such as Starter, Intermediate, and Full or
some equivalent, so it is about the interface, not the user of it. The default
on an install could be Starter in the absence of an existing user configuration.

Should we consider having the skins simply be options on a single binary,
especially since they should all be able to consume the same ODF files? This
should mean that the same localizations would work and be done once for a
release. The help system might be specialized based on the skin selection, but
that is an isolatable provision. There would also be no explosion in the
builds and problems of users having to choose among them.

I am assuming there would be no dramatic difference in the "chrome" so the move
among levels is not startling in terms of appearance, but more in availability
of menus, sidebars, some dialogs, etc.

And, of course, this is yet one more interesting area where we would have to
find developers that are equipped and available to work on something like this.

 - Dennis

THINKING OUT LOUD

[To help with interchange, the configuration file could be used to signal which
level was used to produce a document, so that the consumer has some idea what
might be needed to edit all of its features. Having this be smooth in all
directions takes some more thought.]

My limited sense of OOo4Kids is that it is not just the build of OpenOffice but
the packaging of extensions and other aids that matters.

The downside of a single distribution is that it does not become smaller than
the current one. I don't know if that matters for an OOo4Kids clone or not.

OT: This is a problem that Microsoft Office has attempted to address in a
variety of ways over the years. The idea is not to confront new users and the
very occasional users with a plethora of choices and complex menus. One
attempt involved progressive disclosure of additional options and choices based
on what an *individual* user tended to use, so it was personalized and dynamic.
Like it or not, the ribbon was the replacement for all that. One useful
feature about the ribbon is that it can be collapsed and almost all of the
application window used for the document being worked on. The context
(right-click) menu provides a variety of immediate actions depending on where
the cursor is and the ribbon can be recalled when needed. And there are
substantial provisions for customization, including simple tuning by users who
put features they use often on a quick-start bar next to the window title. I
put a sample screen capture about this at
.

I think it is a good downstream project, but I do not currently see a

All the rest in http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/openoffice/ would stay

OK, if so then I'm out of the game and fine with changing to Git.

Dictionaries US/CA

2015-02-16 Thread Marco A.G.Pinto

Hello!

Yesterday (2015-02-15) Kevin Atkinson released an update for US and CA.

I have been working on en_GB but so far I have only added around 300 new
words this month, because I have been terribly busy.

I will try to add as many as possible before the official .OXT release
on 2015-03-01.

:-P

The news: the next update will have newer US+CA+the usual monthly GB update.

We are heading in the right direction and, in a year or two, we will
have the best open-source dictionaries... at least for GB since it has
over 10 000 new words since I embraced the project...

I want people to write Masters/PhD thesis with AOO in a year from now...
the trick is to use also the LanguageTool add-on for grammar checking (I
am creating the Portuguese rules for it).

PS->I can't remember if I already mentioned this, but I bought an Oxford
Gold Account in the beginning of the year to have access to all
examples. I hope people will realize that this is a serious effort to
develop the best en_GB around, soon better than commercial software.

:-) ;-) :-P :-D 8-)

Kind regards,
