As a native English speaker, I also have no problem with those
abbreviations. In that context, there are not many other words that could
be there, so it is very easy to understand the meaning.

Reporting broken download link

2020-01-25 Thread C-M Evenson

Hi!

I have just finished downloaded win 10, when I discovered that I had no
access to Mic. Excel any more. As I have Open office on another
computer, I decided to use your Excel-programme instead. I found very
soon, that your programme could not be downloaded; in fact no page at
all could be reached. After some seconds the page disappeared and the
following sign was shown:

Oh no! Some styles failed to load. Please try reloading this page, or

Underneath was a list of clickable headlines.

Re: Can't download updates

2020-01-24 Thread F C. Costero
You can go to the web page http://www.openoffice.org/download/, choose the
appropriate operating system and language and then click on Download Full
Installation. You will be redirected to a page on SourceForge where the
download will start automatically. You do not need to click anything on the
SourceForge page.
If you still have problems, it would be best to ask on the users mailing
list or on the forum at https://forum.openoffice.org/en/. This is a list
for developers.

Re: Transferring Openoffice to new computer

2020-01-06 Thread F C. Costero
This is not he best place to ask user questions. Please use the users
mailing list or the forum (https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/) in the
future.

You can simply download the installation files for Apache OpenOffice from
the web site www.openoffice.org to the new computer and then run the
installation process. You can transfer your existing files using a USB
drive or by uploading them to a network accessible location like dropbox or
google drive and then downloading them to the new computer. Be sure to
place them on the new computer in a folder intended for user files, such as
the Documents folder or one of its sub folders. If you use a USB drive, be
sure to follow the correct procedure to eject or unload the drive before
physically removing it.

Re: Time for our first 4.2.0 beta?

2019-01-28 Thread F C. Costero
I am a moderator on the en forum but I am speaking only for myself here. I
think gathering feedback on the forum would be a good solution. The en
forum has a User Experience area that gets very little traffic and could
perhaps be used to gather beta build input. Feedback in languages other
than English could be gathered on the appropriate forums, though they may
need to make a dedicated area. It would be nice to widen the range of
participants beyond people comfortable in English.

I am not sure what the concern is behind the comment "What I mean is, is
there enough coverage of moderators and power users?". On the en forum we
have close to 24 hour coverage of moderators and volunteers and I don't
think an increase in traffic from a beta build would be a problem. The es
forum is the only other one I have experience with and I think there are
plenty of moderators and volunteers there to handle an increase in traffic,
though I obviously have not asked them about this.

I would be happy to make note on this list of interesting or repeated input
about a beta build appearing on the en or es forums.

Stating the correct way to give feedback on the Splash screen should be
considered.

Francis

Re: Error:: While installing openoffice debian menus

2019-01-26 Thread F C. Costero
Hi Nikhil,
Try purging LibreOffice with
sudo apt-get purge LibreOffice*
I did this before installing OpenOffice on my Linux Mint system and it
installed with no error. I was then able to download LibreOffice from the
LibreOffice site and install that in parallel with OpenOffice. I believe
the error you are encountering is seen with any OpenOffice installation on
Ubuntu and is not a result of your build process. See

Re: branch 4.1.7?

2019-01-21 Thread F C. Costero
One "regression" that merits immediate attention is crashing on Windows
when trying to edit a macro embedded in a Writer or Calc document ( I
haven't checked Impress or Base yet). If I open a new document and try to
make an embedded macro (menus Tools -> Macros -> Organize Macros ->
OpenOffice Basic) OpenOffice crashes immediately after I accept the default
module name of Module1. Going through the recovery process, I am asked to
Enable or Disable macros, so the module is created but I cannot get at it.
I can edit the Standard library in My Macros but it is unstable. For
example, if I select two lines of code and press backspace, the program
crashes. This problem started after a Windows update last summer. I thought
a subsequent update fixed it, but I was wrong. I have checked 4.1.5,
4.1.6 and 4.2.0 and it affects all of them. It is not really a regression,
since 4.1.5 worked fine until the Windows update, but Windows users cannot
use macros. I looked for a bug report and did not find one but my Bugzilla
skills are poor. Are the devs aware of this problem?

Francis

Re: Small website refresh

2018-11-23 Thread F C. Costero
I like the update. I am puzzled by the three different Download
buttons/links. The one at the top right says Download, there is a central
one for Download For Windows, and a small link under that that says Other
Platforms. All three lead to the standard download page where the OS is
detected automatically. On this Linux Mint system I am using, the Download
For Windows button results in me being offered the Linux 64 bit RPM (RPM is
the wrong choice, but that is a different problem). Why is the button
labeled as a Windows download?
Please keep this effort going!

Re: License of specific fonts?

2018-09-05 Thread F C. Costero
Hello Simon,
No one here or on any Apache web site can provide legal advice. See
https://opensource.com/article/17/11/open-source-and-fonts for a layman's
discussion of font licensing. What that article seems to say is that
whether you can include the font when you distribute a document depends on
the license. For example, this Microsoft site (
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/typography/font-redistribution-licensing)
says you may not copy or redistribute their fonts, though they can be
embedded for certain uses. It seems you will have to think about just how
your writing will be distributed and then read the font licenses and check
with a lawyer if necessary.

Re: creating a spreadsheet (was: new cool feature)

2018-08-16 Thread F C. Costero
I changed the LOOKUP() function in columns D and E to be a VLOOKUP() with
the fourth parameter set to 0 so the function looks for an exact match. The
LOOKUP() function requires that the lookup vector be ordered. Since column
A of the Database sheet is not ordered, incorrect results were returned.
I fixed the formulas in column I to have the form
=H4-G4 + (G4 >H4)
This accounts for cases where the end time (H4) has a smaller clock value
(e.g. 07:00) than the start time (e.g. 19:00) but is in the next day. Times
are stored in units of days. The time 07:00 has the value 7/24 and the time
19:00 has the value 19/24. You were subtracting
7/24 - 19/24 = -12/24 = -0.5
If a cell is formatted as time, -0.5 is displayed as12:00, but the value is
still -0.5.
I appended
+ (G4 > H4)
which returns FALSE (equal to zero) when H4 is larger than or equal to G4.
When G4 is larger than H4, it returns TRUE (equal to one) that gives
H4-G4 + (G4 >H4) = 7/24 - 19/24 + (19/24 > 7/24) = -0.5 + (TRUE) = -0.5 + 1
= 0.5
The 0.5, when formatted as time, is 12:00 and it is the desired answer.
This is not a bug. All spreadsheets treat times as fractions of a day.

As Peter says, it is better to get help on the forum or the user list.

Re: open office file and Excel

2018-03-11 Thread F C. Costero
Hello Ami
The problem is almost certainly that the default program your computer
wants to use is Excel and that the icon displayed for the file is therefore
an Excel icon. The file content is unaffected in this case. There are two
things you can try to open the file. I assume you are using Windows. I am
not on a Windows machine at the moment, so I have to rely on my memory.
Please excuse an errors in my instructions.
Method 1. Start OpenOffice by clicking on the Windows button and searching
through the available programs. Once OpenOffice is running, use the menu
File -> Open to navigate to the file.
Method 2. Right click on the file icon and select Open With. OpenOffice
should be on the list of available programs. Before selecting OpenOffice,
look to see if there is an option something like "Always use this program
for files of this type". Select that option if it is present and then
choose OpenOffice.

If the above does not solve your problem, please ask on the user forum:
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/ You will have to register but that
is the more appropriate place to ask questions like this. If you prefer
mailing lists, there is a users mailing list intended for this type of
support. This mailing list is for developers.
Best regards,
Francis

Re: OPEN OFFICE DRAW - PLEASE CONTACT \ME ASAP

2018-01-01 Thread Patti C.
We save the cost for a toll free technical support number in order to ship
the Product for free.
May I ask where you got your copy of Open office from?
Which version of Open Office do you use?

I do not understand the Problem you have. I can open Apache Open Office
Draw and set the ruler as I whish.

Why the pressure. ASAP sounds very urgend. Why is that.
A=I am trying to start a business of my own and using Open Office Draw.
I need everything to work properly and effectively
Even the AVG technician(s) were having problems with the ruler measurements.

Why is it that sometimes you click Open-Open Office-Draw and every once in
a while a draw window opens without the side panel, to view the content(s)
on each page in the individual Draw windows?
How do you correct this?
What buttons on the keyboard do you press, to correct this?

ASAP as it is important to me and I want to complete all contents within
the Open Office Draw window(s), so each looks impressive and I can correct
the error(s) being made by
using specific keys on the keyboard, instead of becoming flustered, and/or
frustrated; without any simplistic steps provided to resolve the problem(s)
at hand.

To me it is an urgent matter which needs immediate attention. When I
couldn't get a hold of you, open office by phone I called AVG techs. The
AVG techs were even bewildered as to how to resolve the problem(s)
presented.

Why is Cross Fading, Fields, Links, Object and Hyperlink grayed out in Edit?

Why is crop picture grayed out in Format?

Why is Distribution,Group, Ungroup, Enter Group, Exit Group, Combine,
Split, Connect and Break grayed out in Modify?

Why aren't all option selections made available to be used?

Not all computer users are computer technicians or programmers and need to
know the simplified steps of what keyboard keys are needing to be pressed,
to resolve the issue(s) and, or problem(s) which have occurred at the
present time(s); otherwise the unresolved issue(s) may become very
frustrating and/or blood pressure elevating..

In the help selections, could all the methods/steps of using the keyboard
buttons for each problem which may arise, be simply stated in the Help
selection.
Such as: Draw-Side Panel window display- press ? key+?key+?key (Shift+ F3,
Ctrl+S, CTRL+Shift+S, etc.)
instead of all the technical jibberish that is unable to be understood by
many.

Thank you for replying, I just got impatient of waiting for reply and
called the AVG techs.
As I said, all problems which I have faced are urgent to correct, as I am
trying to do impressive work in starting a business of my own and Open
Office Draw was the option which suited my needs beat at the time.

OPEN OFFICE DRAW - PLEASE CONTACT \ME ASAP

2017-05-15 Thread Patti C.
Why is there not a toll free number to call for technical Support?

Why aren't all the proper tools provided which are needed for rulers? at
the top of Draw and on the left hand side of Draw?

Where are the normal measure scale(s) for all rulers provided
which measures 01-25, 01-50, 01-75 0r 01-100 from the left to the right,
for millimeters, centimeters, inches, etc..?!

Why does it seem the ruler correction(s) are so impossible to make? Do you
want to discourage user(s) so each no longer uses Open Office?

Why are *6* *options* grayed out and made unusable in *Edit*?

Why is it that in* View*-*Input* *Method* *Status* grayed out and made
unusable?

Why is *Special* *Character* grayed out and made unusable in *Insert*?

*Tools*- Why aren't all *proper* *tools* *provided* to be used, that are
*needed* to *correct* any *error*(*s*)? This *needs* to become a *priority*
to be *corrected* *immediately*.

*Format* - Why is *Default Formatting* grayed out and not made available to
be used?
Why is *Position* and *Size* grayed out and made
unavailable to be used?
Why is *Crop* *Picture* grayed out and made unavailable to
be used?

*Insert* - Why is Formatting Mark grayed out and made unavailable to be
used?

*Modify* - Why is *Convert* grayed out and made unavailable to be used?
   Why is *Arrange* options grayed out and made unavailable to
be used?
   Why is *Distribution* grayed out and made unavailable to be
used?
Why is *Name* grayed out and made unavailable to be used?
 Why is *Group* grayed out and made unavailable to be used?
  Why is *Enter* *Group* grayed out and made unavailable to
be used?
   Why is *Exit* *Group* grayed out and made unavailable to
be used?
   Why is *Combine* grayed out and made unavailable to be
used?
Why is *Split* grayed out and made unavailable to be
used?
 Why is *Connect* grayed out and made unavailable to be
used?

These need to be made a priority to be made available to all user(s) to use.

Why isn't there a *download* *bar* on every *Open* *Office* *download* to
let you know when the download(s) have *started*, *downloading* and when
*finished*? This would be greatly *appreciated* by all Open Office users,
I'm sure.

One feature I am appreciative of is the document recovery.

  Time to make a lot of improvements to Open Office so it is much more
effective and simple to use, as well as meeting professional standards.

Do you have a remote screen capability?

I can't help here other than provide a translation by a Russian speaking
friend of the original message. She also provided a little extra
explanation.

"I am considering your product as a replacement for Microsoft Office. I
found the following errors:
In the MS Office template document, there is a "Today's Date" field. When
I open it up, it shows the wrong Russian spelling (the ending of the name
for month in Russian is different if it is used in a date format). Also,
the month in Russian is not capitalized (July is july), but it is in this
case.  Please correct."

  I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble. It should not be necessary to
reinstall OpenOffice. The Quickstarter is a feature of OpenOffice that
starts automatically when you start your computer so that launching
OpenOffice will appear to happen more quickly. Since it is running,
OpenOffice is still on your computer. What leads you to think that
OpenOffice has disappeared?

You do not say what operating system you are using, so I will guess it is
Windows. If you have a Windows Start button (typically at the lower left of
your screen), click that and select All Programs. Scroll down the list that
appears until you see a folder called OpenOffice 4.1.2. Click on that and
then click on the component of OpenOffice you want to start.

I hope that helps. A better place to get user support than this mailing
list is the user forum. The English forum is at
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/index.php

Hi Patricia,
   My fonts are set just as yours are but your odt file looks normal when I
open it, not at all like your bmp. When I click on the Pi in the formula
editor it is centered both vertically and horizontally in the dotted box.
That was all on Windows 7. I also looked at a similar formula in Linux and
had no problem. The fonts there are Liberation Serif, Liberation Sans and
DejaVu Sans Mono. If no one has a suggestion here in the next several

Sorry I was unclear. I meant that you should rename (or delete) the user

I haven't had any problem with the spell check in the latest version. I
suggest you reset your user profile. There is a tutorial on the English

I verified the Check for Updates in the Extension Manager on Windows 7 64
bit and it correctly flagged my downlevel extensions.
Clicking the Install button doesn't seem to do anything useful. A progress
window makes it look like a download is underway but afterwards I can't
find any extension files and restarting AOO shows that the old extensions
are still in place. Am I being stupid?

That is to account for the actual year being slightly less than 365.25 days
and is the difference between the Gregorian calendar and the earlier Julian

[EXT] Dialog doesn't show up for Filter Extension

2015-06-30 Thread Mani N C
Hi,

I am writing a C++ filter extension for DOCX file format. I need to get
some information from user before opening the document, After that default
DOCX filter will be used.
I was able to create a filter which can open DOCX files. Also created XDL
file using Basic Dialog editor.
Now when I try to use this XDL file, I don't see any dialog opening up.

I tried to follow the directions in
http://openoffice.2283327.n4.nabble.com/help-with-dialog-boxes-td3026585.html
But I couldn't get it working yet.

sal_Int16 SAL_CALL SimpleDialog::execute() throw ( RuntimeException )
{
Reference XDialogProvider  xDialogProvider(
mxServiceFactory-createInstanceWithContext(
C2U(com.sun.star.awt.DialogProvider2), mxContext), UNO_QUERY_THROW );

OUString sXDLPath = getFilterInstallPath();
sXDLPath += C2U(xdl/SimpleDialog.xdl);

mxDialog = Reference XDialog
(xDialogProvider-createDialog(sXDLPath), UNO_QUERY_THROW);
Reference XControl  xControl(mxDialog, UNO_QUERY_THROW);

short nRet = mxDialog-execute();
return mRet;
}

I get a valid xdl file path in sXDLPath, File path starts with file://
instead of vnd.sun.star.extension:// Is this OK ?
Is there any mistake in the code snippet above?

Because, If I create dialog programatically, it works fine. Problem happens
only when I use XDL file.

Thanks in advance!

 Hello Everyone!
 I read a lot of documentation about creation charts using macro BASIC
 And I still can't create chart in Writer (almost all documentation describe

 First of all I create a chart object like this:

 'Prepare embedded object
 Dim oEmbeddedObject
 oEmbeddedObject =
 oDoc.CreateInstance(com.sun.star.text.TextEmbeddedObject)
 oEmbeddedObject.SetPropertyValue(CLSID,
 12dcae26-281f-416f-a234-c3086127382e)
 oEmbeddedObject.Name = ChartID

 'Insert chart in document
 oCursor.GetText().InsertTextContent(oCursor, oEmbeddedObject, False)

 'The first approach inserting data like this:
 oDocChart.Diagram.DataRowSource =
 com.sun.star.chart.ChartDataRowSource.ROWS
 Dim aData(1, 3)
 aData(0, 0) = 10
 aData(0, 1) = 20
 aData(0, 2) = 30
 aData(1, 0) = 10
 aData(1, 1) = 40
 aData(1, 2) = 90
 Dim oData as Object
 oData = oDocChart.Data
 oData.Data = aData
 for this case I get 2 series Y data, but I need 1 series with data X-Y

 'The second approach inserting data using Writer table as datasource
 'I'will miss a lot of code

 Dim oChartType
 oChartType =
 oDocChart.FirstDiagram.GetCoordinateSystems()(0).GetChartTypes()(0)

 Dim oDataProv
 oDataProv = oDoc.createInstance( com.sun.star.chart2.data.DataProvider )

 Dim oDataSeries
 oDataSeries = CreateDataSeries_XYDiagram(oDataProv, table1.A1:A10,
 table1.B1:B10)

 Dim oNewDataSeriesList(0) as Object 'new data series
 oNewDataSeriesList(0) = oDataSeries

 'Correspond with last approach I get good chart, but after reopening the
 document Y values become to X values

 The question is, how to right create a X-Y chart?

Hello Semen,
  I find that the code below, a slight modification of yours, works for me.

oDoc = ThisComponent
oCursor = oDoc.Text.createTextCursor()
oTextObject = oDoc.CreateInstance(com.sun.star.text.TextEmbeddedObject)
oTextObject.SetPropertyValue(CLSID,
12dcae26-281f-416f-a234-c3086127382e)
oTextObject.Name = ChartID

'Insert chart in document
oCursor.GetText().InsertTextContent(oCursor, oTextObject, False)

oDocChart = oTextObject.EmbeddedObject.Component
'The first approach inserting data like this:

oDocChart.Diagram = oDocChart.createInstance(com.sun.star.chart.XYDiagram)
oDocChart.Diagram.DataRowSource = com.sun.star.chart.ChartDataRowSource.ROWS

Dim aData(1, 2)
aData(0, 0) = 10
aData(0, 1) = 20
aData(0, 2) = 30
aData(1, 0) = 10
aData(1, 1) = 40
aData(1, 2) = 90

oDocChart.Data.Data = aData

oDocChart.DataSourceLabelsInFirstRow = False

I hope that helps.

Hi Steve,
   The registration process is no longer active, so you can just ignore
that. A JRE is a Java Runtime Environment, which is available from
Java.com. It is needed to run a few of the features of OpenOffice. However,
if you haven't run into any other problems, you don't seem to need it. Your
older version of OpenOffice requires and old version of the JRE and I don't
recommend going through the trouble without a reason.
You should consider getting a more recent version of OpenOffice from
www.openoffice.org. That download process will redirect you to SourceForge
and the download will start automatically. There is no need to click on
anything at SourceForge.

 Is Apache 4.1.0 the latest version of what I already have?

 If I install Apache 4.1.0, will it upgrade my present 3.0 or will it
 install a completely different system, so that I would have to delete the
 3.0 myself?

 I normally save my documents as .doc - is that still possible with 4.1.0?

 Is a .doc usable (edit, etc) with 4.1.0?

 My OpenOffice documents are .odt - does 4.1.0 still use that extension?
  If not, is it still usable with 4.1.0?

 In addition, I have a problem with printing envelopes: they print barcodes
 across (up and down) the envelope face. I have worked with a printer
 technician, and we cannot find any way that the printer could be adding the
 barcodes. He suggested that I call OpenOffice; that is why I have
 discovered Apache OpenOffice! If the answers to all my above questions are
 positive, I will download the 4.1.0 and hope that the barcode problem will
 no longer be present.

 If the barcodes persist, I will go to Support, but before that happens, I
 need to know the answers to these questions.

 Thank you very much.

 Sincerely,
 Roberta Yule Owen

Hello Roberta,
   Yes. 4.1.0 is the latest version of Apache OpenOffice.
   The 4.1.0 version should install in parallel to your 3.0 version. I
suggest keeping both versions active for a little while until you are sure
that 4.1.0 works well for you. There have been many improvements since 3.0
but it only takes one bug sometimes to cause a big problem.
   The latest version can still save in the .doc format and its native
format is .odt.
Best regards,
Francis

We have some confusion here. The forum that is dead is not the official AOO

Re: Which SQL commands support OpenOffice Base?

2014-04-23 Thread F C. Costero
Hello!
If you create a Base file using the menu File - New - Database - Create
a New Database, you will get a Base file that runs HSQLDB version 1.8 as an
embedded database. The SQL documentation for that is here:
http://www.hsqldb.org/doc/1.8/guide/ch09.html. I would not recommend using
the embedded mode for critical work because of the possibility of data
loss. The data loss is not due to instability of HSQLDB but to the nature
of the embedded mode.
If you create a Base file using the menu File - New - Database - Connect
to an Existing Database, you can connect to an external database through
JDBC, ODBC or any of the other listed methods. This means you can connect
to any database engine of your choosing and use its version of SQL.
More detailed answers are best provided on the user mailing list or on the

 I noticed this note, which I thought was odd:

 http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/msg35699.html

 I'm hoping this is just a confusion, but we do need to be careful to
 avoid confusion in this area, since it can cause users to panic.

 The facts, as I understand them:

 There are two features in OpenOffice (and in LibreOffice and Microsoft
 Office) that users refer to when they talk about passwords:

 1) Password protected encrypted documents

 2) Password protected sections, cells, read-only files, etc.

 An encrypted document is as good as your password. We use good, high
 quality encryption in ODF documents by default. And we use MS Office
 compatible encryption, which is also good, with Office files.

 But in practice most users have far weaker passwords than they should.
  The context of a password protected file is much more vulnerable than
 a website password. A typical website will allow you to attempt a log
 in 3 or 5 times before locking you out for an hour or more. But
 someone who has your encrypted document can attempt to guess the
 password without any such restriction. They can run sophisticated
 programs, standalone password crackers, with GPU hardware acceleration
 to attempt billions of passwords. So a casual password of 6
 alphanumeric characters will be quickly broken. So given the context
 users should be using longer, more complex passwords. Of course, that
 makes it more likely that they will forget the password and show up on
 the forums when they forget. However you look at it, document-based
 passwords are a 1985 solution to a problem that is better solved today
 in other ways.

 As for the protected sections, we should all know that these are
 honor system protection mechanisms, essentially child safety locks,
 and offer no real cryptographic protection. This is true in MS Office
 is well. The feature is there to help the user define sections that
 they don't want accidentally deleted, but the password protection can
 be trivially defeated in 30 seconds with a text editor and a copy of
 unzip. This is not a flaw in OpenOffice. This is not a bug. This is
 how the feature was designed and has been used in Microsoft Office and
 even 1-2-3 before then.

 Hopefully we're telling users something that is consistent with what I
 outlined above. Of course, it is quite possible that many users will
 not understand this and all they hear is My password can be broken so
 OpenOffice is bad.

 Hi,

 I've been a loyal user of Open Office for the past several years. The

 Two things though that I really would like to see be improved or added for
 future releases:

 1) In a large spreadsheet I block several cells and only want to print
 those cells. Print Preview and Print wants to print the whole spreadsheet,
 which could be several pages. But, maybe I only need a half page or about
 one page only. Maybe there is a way of doing it, but try as I do I can't
 seem to get to print only what I've blocked or highlighted.

 2) Excel has a very nice block and move feature. You can block or
 highlight a group of cells and just drag them to a different location and
 keep the formatting of the moved cells. This is slick and you don't have
 to go thru a copy and paste procedure which is much more cumbersome.

 Keep up the good work!

 Jerry [?]

Hello Jerry,
   If I understand you correctly, the equivalent actions in Calc are:
1. Highlight the cells you want to print. Select the menu Format - Print
Ranges - Define. Selecting File - Page Preview will then show only the
selected cells.
2. Highlight the cells you want to move. Left click and hold the mouse
button down inside the selected range (not at the edge of the range as in
Excel) and drag to the new location.

I hope that helps.

Hello Marco,
   I downloaded your document and I see two lines in blue and 13 lines in

For the signature problem on the forum, you might try saying you use
version 3.4.1. I have reported the problem but I'm not sure how long it
will take to fix if it is indeed a general problem.

Finally, there is a tutorial on the forum about fixing spell check

BootstrapException: no office executable found!

2013-06-29 Thread Juan C. Sanz

Hello.
I've just start to learn with the OpenOffice Developer's Guide.
Following the Getting Started chapter I've installed:

 * a 32-bit version of JDK (jdk-7u25-nb-7_3_1-linux-i586.sh and
   jdk-6u45-linux-i586.bin)
 * a Java IDE (Netbeans 7.3 - I installed 7.3.1 but I uninstalled it
   due some problems)
 * OpenOffice SDK
   (Apache_OpenOffice_incubating-SDK_3.4.1_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz)
 * OpenOffice
   (Apache_OpenOffice_incubating_3.4.1_Linux_x86_install-deb_es.tar.gz)
 * OpenOffice plugging for Netbeans
   (org-openoffice-extensions-3.0.2.nbm, from
   http://people.apache.org/~cmarcum/devtools/)

All it is running in a VirtualBox machine with Linux Mint 15 32-bit
(linux 3.8.0-19 and MATE 1.6.0)
My problem is that when I try to run any sample of the Developer's Guide
I always get the same error:

/com.sun.star.comp.helper.BootstrapException: no office executable found!//
//at
com.sun.star.comp.helper.Bootstrap.bootstrap(Bootstrap.java:239)//
//at
com.example.OfficeUNOClientApp.main(OfficeUNOClientApp.java:49)/
Also if I create a new empty Apache OpenOffice Client Application
project, running the frame created, I get the same error.
I've tried to change the java platform (that's why I have jdk-7 and
jdk-6 installed), following the (very old) advises from some forums I've
tried to add everything to the CLASSPATH, I've tried soffice
-accept=socket,host=0,port=2002;urp;, I execute the setsdkenv_unix...

I think I've done everything, but I get always the same error.
What am I doing wrong? Some more advises?

  I'd like to run the survey at least through the weekend, so we don't
  bias against home users who might only have time to do the survey on
  weekends. But I think we can wrap this up early next week.

  I've started to prototype the analysis scripts, using R, so when the
  final data comes in I should be able quickly put out a report. So far
  it looks like there will be around 5 logos that are bunched together
  at the top.

  -Rob

  I would think running it for at least a week would be good.

   It is probably worth thinking about what we want to do with all the
   data. I did an analysis of the results so far, and some quick
   thoughts:

   1) The question asking for person's age appears to be useless. Unless
   we have an unusual number of users in their 70's , 80's and 90's, a
   large number of users are entering their birth year rather than their
   age. So I'm planning on just ignoring that field. (This is probably
   why you often see this done as a drop down list of years in other
   surveys, less error prone).

   2) I will be able to produce a list of logos, sorted by average score
   and given the % breakdown of 1's, 2's, 3's, etc. Maybe even a
   histogram chart for each.

   3) We're receiving a lot of comments on the individual logos, many
   more than I expected. So we can expect that for each logo there will
   be 200 or more text comments. I'm not sure what we want to do with
   these. Since this is an anonymous survey the users are quite blunt
   with their comments on the logos they did not prefer, using coarse
   language, etc., stuff that would be inappropriate if a list subscriber
   posted. It is not all constructive criticism. Some of it is quite
   harsh. On the other hand, there is a tremendous amount of valuable
   feedback as well, that we and the designers specifically might find
   useful.   So what to do?

   a) Post it all, the good the bad and the ugly?

   b) Remove or censor only profanity and post the rest?

   c) Make feedback available only to the individual designers via email

   d) Publicly post the feedback only for the top 5 logos, share the rest
   privately with the individual designers.

  I think probably c) and only if the designers request it.

  But, if we're looking to narrow down choices to 5, those who are more
  intimately involved in this process (marketing folks?), would probably
 like
  to see the constructive comments for those.

 Another approach would be to have some volunteers read through the
 comments and summarize in a paragraph, giving something like:

 12 people thought that the font was too old-fashioned and suggested a
 bolder font. Two people said that the number 4 was unlucky in
 Chinese culture and should not be featured so predominately in the
 logo. Four people wondered whether the logo would render well at
 smaller image scales.

 In other words, take the raw comments and figure out the prominent
 trends, like someone might do to summarize feedback raised in a
 meeting or focus group. (Or those in the US might be reminded of
 Zagat restaurant reviews)

 Since each logo has 200+ comments we might want to do this only for
 the top 5 or so logos, I could probably volunteer to do this for one
 of the logos, but not all of the top ones. But with enough help this
 would be possible.

 -Rob

I'd be willing to summarize comments and note the main trends. I think that
strikes a good balance between accepting all the input but not asking busy
people to wade through a lot of material.

Re: [CODE][PROPOSAL]: AOO 4.0 getting rid of the 3 layer office, part 1

2013-03-22 Thread Ian C
Hi Jürgen,

On Sat, Mar 23, 2013 at 12:15 AM, Jürgen Schmidt jogischm...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi,

 the so called 3layer office is not really useful anymore (it was never)
 and makes more problems than it helps.

 I thought that AOO 4.0 would be the best time to start at least with the
 necessary rework. The main idea is to use a new simplified directory
 layout and tweak the necessary config file (*rc, *.ini), rpath or
 similar linker flags where necessary etc. Eliminate the URE completely
 because we don't really want support it as a standalone product.

 I did some initial work so far and I am now able to build an office for
 Windows, MacOS and Linux with a new simplified directory layout.

 Windows and MacOS have already one main directory whereas on Linux we
 have openoffice (basis layer + URE) and openoffice4 (brand layer).

 I removed all this base-link, ure-link, URE, urelib stuff and
 reorganized the directories.

 Example layout on Linux:
 openoffice4
 openoffice4/help
 openoffice4/presets
 openoffice4/program  - contains basis-link/program + URE/bin + URE/lib
 openoffice4/program/misc  - former URE/share/misc - will be removed
 openoffice4/README
 openoffice4/README.html
 openoffice4/readmes
 openoffice4/share

 In general the layout becomes more equal on all platforms.

 The good news is that the office work on all 3 platforms, I am able to
 select Java, extensions seems to work as well. Python is not yet tested,
 language packs are not yet tested and built but in general I am thinking
 it will be no problem.

 Advantage of this move would be a simplified structure, long term a
 simplified configuration when the *rc/*.ini files are consolidated.
 Easier deployment on Linux, no conflicts with an URE from LO or the
 distro at all.

 My idea is to continue this basic work, do further cleanup in the office
 as well as the build system, do further testing including the SDK...
 Still some work to do but from my point of view a useful move forward to
 get rid of this complex and unnecessary 3layer stuff.

 What do you think?

 On demand I can provide test builds if there are people interested to
 help with testing.

is the code available on a branch? If so I can make some time to help
check the build on Fedora and do some smoke testing.
Or if you can get the code to me in some other way let me know.

I have limited time but happy to try these things if that helps.
