It is important to know that OpenOffice keeps merely a list of the last ten
files edited on that installation. These are stored on the local computer, not
remotely in the cloud; to be edited on one or other computer, the file(s) need
to be physically transferred from one to the other.

It _is_ possible to use remote storage (the cloud); if you know about that and
wish to do so, you probably know enough to sort it out yourself - I cannot help.

Re: Log On info

2021-05-03 Thread F Campos Costero
Thank you for downloading OpenOffice. OpenOffice runs locally on each
computer and there is no account to log into. The first time you start the
program, there is a registration process but that sets up a user profile
for that machine. The user profile stores your document templates, menu
customizations, macro scripts and other details that are specific to your
preferred use of OpenOffice on that computer. You may store the files that
you make on a remote drive so they can be easily accessed from many
computers but each computer must have its own copy of OpenOffice.
I hope that helps clarify the situation. If you need more help, it would be
best to use the user forum (https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/) or the
user mailing list. This mailing list is for developers.

Indeed, thanks! To be precise, the first link on that page leads you to
https://www.openoffice.org/qa/testcase/ManualTesting/
which is the "dump of former Testlink cases" I referred to. So it's not
on the Wiki; it is on the main website.

I notice that some like

have a notice saying "Execution Type: Automated" and there is a filename
for an "Automation script" in Java but I doubt this has anything to do
with the automated tests you refer to. I honestly have no idea where the

Things are very different depending on whether one is testing a dev
build or a release candidate.

A list of manual tests close to the "checklist" you were looking for
can be found here (and these apply to all builds):

former Testlink cases that I cannot find right now.

Maybe these?
https://www.openoffice.org/qa/testcase/

A RC (Release Candidate), instead, is very different. We ship both the
source code and convenience binaries, but the Apache release process
focuses mostly on legal checks to be done on the source code.

Details about voting on a RC:
http://www.apache.org/legal/release-policy.html

An example of OpenOffice RC testing (this is what I usually do; but
other people run different tests):

https://s.apache.org/openoffice-416-tests

There are also automated tests you can run against a build.
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/QA/test_automation_guide

I don't use the eclipse instructions and the Ant command line way is at
the end.

I've been trying to clean these up and it's work in progress.
The BVT test for trunk are in pretty good shape. All 80 pass for me now.
Some in 4.1 are still flaky though. pass/fail intermittently.
Threading/Processor speeds are my theory.
I'm working on cherry picking a lot of test fixes from trunk to 4.1 but
they're not ready yet.
There was a lot of API changes included that I don't think we should
backport.

Anyway it won't matter after 4.2 anyway :)

Best regards,
Carl

In the hope it can be useful, please see here:
https://github.com/apache/openoffice/pull/116

Apparently, Linux crashes because certain stacks are pop()-ed without
ever being push()-ed before.

My personal theory is that Windows's standard library may add some
implicit checks, and for this reason Windows builds do not seem to
crash.

The PR addresses the ``symptoms'' of a wrong parsing. The parsing
itself should be fixed, but maybe this ``quick'' fix is ok for a
minor release, if it avoids a blatant crash?

I hope it can be useful. It applies to trunk and AOO419 so it should
be easily integrated ``at the last minute'' if we found it's worth it.

I tried to look into it... and it's really too much for me at the
moment. I am sorry. If you have any ready-made checklist I will be
happy to go through it, but I could not make much sense out of the QA
section at the moment...

...except for the idea of verifying the bugs "changed after" the
release date. I used the date for 4.1.7 and I found this:

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=127952

The fun (?) fact is that:

 - the AOO 4.1.9 build for Windows by Matthias can open the file;

 - Jim's RPM builds for Linux _crash_ while opening that file;

 - My own build of trunk on Linux can open the file.

Do you think that this is worth more investigation before releasing
4.1.9?

There is a lot of QA information on the wiki at:
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/QA. A lot of the information is either
dated, or obsolete but there is still much good information that can be
used.

I don't know if we have any procedures, but you can always download,
install and test the build against regressions...

I am confident that the bug was fixed by Jim's commit.

Do we have any? I can follow it for the Italian builds.

That may be the problem, you have to change the bootstrap.ini, otherwise
you use the wrong AOO profile.

I now tested on Windows 10 with multiple AOO installations (4.1.8,
4.1.9, 4.2.0) and could not see a regression.

@all: Maybe some other can also test? I don't feel comfortable if we are

After changing bootstrap.ini all problems initially reported are gone.

The Windows builds are *not* Developer Builds.

Dev Builds have enough problems of their own, so I am building close to
the release builds, only branding them as "Developer Test Builds".

Hi Keith,

Just did a quick test with AOO 4.1.9 on Windows 7.

Clipboard works as expected for me.

Regarding the locked files, did you edit bootstrap.ini after "setup /a" ?

I will do some more tests (next year) with multi install on Windows 10.

[INFO] ProOOBox and Flyer

2020-06-05 Thread Peter Kovacs
I would like to inform you on a lengthy and broad discussion on dev-de
between Myself, Detlef Nennan, Jörg Schmidt and Jan-Christian Wienandt

My initial Question has been because Jörg hat removed ProOOBox from
Flyer contributors note I did on Cwiki so a recruiter could see what is
who doing. I wanted to know about some background of this.

Further more we talked about the Apache Way and personal issues.

ProOOBox will continue to support AOO, and Jörg has said they are
actively working on updating documentation.

Detlef has renewed his will to contribute to the flyers.

The German Pony Link to the discussion (untranslated. I could not find a
service that worked.):

[INFO] Contact with wikimedia.ch

2015-05-04 Thread Guy Waterval
Hi all,

I had an interesting discussion this afternoon in Lausanne with people of
wikimédia.ch http://xn--wikimdia-f1a.ch. This project has about 500
members and produces contents for Wikipedia. It also develops a software,
Kiwix. The project is not only composed of volunteers, it integrates also
employees, mainly project managers, who organize courses for new members in
different locations on a regular basis, provide maintenance of the
structure and are responsible for contacts with the media to guide them on
projects which make the demand when they organize events. I can count of
their help to promote the AOO project in Switzerland.
Regarding the documentation, there is no problem. If a work is initialized
under a dual license cc-by-sa / Alv2.0, their potential contributors will
work under the dual license. So, the ALv2.0 license will always be
maintained and the AOO project can anytime reuse the material, if desired.

Many thanks for these informations, Alexandro.
As I will have a stand in a commercial center in two weeks, perhaps I will

There are also other possible ways to collaborate, perhaps more accessible
for a school : extensions, translations, templates, etc. I will try to

a good place for that article.

There are some testimonials on the openoffice wiki with Hitek school
and Seneca from back in 2010.
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Education_Courses/Seneca_College
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/HitekSchool

As an ex-leader of the Education project we welcomed schools willing
to engage with the project. And we worked on protocols to be able to
work withing the schools own protocols.

A little offtopic here but just as an introduction.
Could it be possible to produce for next year a little document explaining
how a school of Engineering for instance, could collaborate to the code of
the AOO project. Such a document could be sent by members of the project to
schools where they have already internal contacts to promote the AOO
project and to test their reaction. At the end of their studies the
students receive a projet to do. Could it not possible to have a list of
tasks which could be submit to schools as possible projects for their
 students ?

I'm not sure this would give any results. Maybe OpenOffice caches the
update information, so one would still get the update notification even
if we retire it. But in general, 4.1.0 is the best version we can offer.
You cite https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124717 as the
reason but the root cause for it is an issue that has existed since
2010, and it took a huge effort and many misunderstandings before you
found a way to reproduce it.

I agree, though, that we should consider a 4.1.1, and maybe schedule it
for June; we already have a couple of new languages and some bugfixes,
we have an ongoing session of post-release tests and in a few weeks
we'll probably be ready to wrap it up and see what's best to do.

I also think that there should be a hint in 4.1.0 Release Notes under

Sure. I see it's there now and it's good to have it there.

Thanks for your answer.

To be honest I never present AOO against MS Office, but as a complement to
MS Office, to open certain files or for a use at home, or with some
extensions, etc. I don't will push people to a radical change, especially
in sensible areas where they could have too many interoperability issues or
in case I know there is locally no structure able to support such a change.
But of course, there are areas in a company where AOO can be viewed as an
excellent alternative, without inconvenients, and in this case, it's
certainly a good choice to suggest. For instance, I know a MS Office user
(a teacher) who uses only AOO for translations with the Anaphraseus
extension. He will perhaps never change totally for AOO, and I have no
problem with that. But as we have in CH a lot of users with daily
translation works between French English German and Italian, I know he has
made a demand (no response up to now) for a systematic installation of
AOO+Anaphraseus near MS Office on all the PCs in the Swiss Administration.
The alternative Wordfast for MS Office is certainly more sophisticated but
costs 400 euros pro licence. Another advantage of this soft approach is
to give people an opportunity to discover AOO without stress and use it at
home if they will. Also a possible way to enlarge the basis of the users.
For schools the situation is a little different, OOo4Kids is clearly the
solution for the primary school and AOO the best free solution for students
after 12 years. In this area a more combative attitude is suitable, I
find.

From a practical perspective it is important to realize that with most
changes their are winners and losers. Some people hate change, some
love it. If a company is moving from Microsoft to OpenOffice, who
are the natural winners and losers:

Winners: Those who benefit from cost savings, so the owners of the
company. Those whose departments now have extra money to spend on
other things than MS Office. Those looking for the opportunity to
advance their careers by driving cost-saving changes. Those who want
to demonstrate leadership by transforming the company's IT department.

Losers: Those who fear change, disruption. Those who identify
themselves and their competency as Microsoft Office exports and fear
that this career advantage will be lost.

The trick to adopting OpenOffice is finding your natural allies in the
organization and working with them to address the concerns of those
who fear they will lose by the change. In the end it is possible for
everyone to win. But you need a plan for addressing the
constituencies who will naturally fear and resist change.

Very good! I see that hanya, who already fixed several bugs, has just
submitted a patch or two for this one too. So I would recommend that, to
start, you:

1) Build OpenOffice (this is done, as I assume from previous
conversations here) and check that the bug still exists.

2) Post a comment to
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=56998
saying that you are a new developer and you will review hanya's patch as
discussed on the dev list (you will need to register for Bugzilla).

3) Apply hanya's patches (I see two of them in the issue) to the source
code and rebuild. In the process, actually look at hanya's patches to
review the code.

4) Report on the bug page if the bug is solved or not.

If you have any difficulties in a step, just ask.

A note: after being dormant for weeks, issue 56998 is seeing
(relatively) a lot of activity recently. It might happen that your work
overlaps with other people's work in this specific case, but it's useful
to learn anyway.

You are hanya (hanya.r...@gmail.com) in Bugzilla?

When you have attached a patch you choose the flag ? for that patch. It
will generate a mail to the dev list, with request for review.

Very good, thanks. There is some dangerous mix of whitespaces and

OK, I think I was not clear here. I know the ext_sources directory is part
of our SVN tree.

The directory is in SVN, but most of its contents are downloaded at
build time. If you run svn status there, you'll see the files downloaded
by ./bootstrap (in compressed form). Uncompressed files are found in
main/MODULENAME, so hsqldb sources, for example, get uncompressed and
patched in subfolders of main/hsqldb. You can find information about
this in the module's makefile.

The external sources are unpacked and patched in the project's own

  main/hyphen/${INPATH}/misc/build/hyphen-2.7.1/
with ${INPATH} being system dependent, e.g. wntmsci12.pro on Windows.

OK, thanks. This helps quite a bit. My assessment at this point is that

Regina -- how curious, but thanks for the hint! I will try this. In truth,
I started up this build, command line in Linux, and went off to do
something else for a few hours. When I got back, I got all the errors re
the QA build failing, but, well, I guess the hslqdb stuff has scrolled off.
Yet, why wouldn't it have just stopped there? Ok, I'm relatively new at
this -- so much to learn.

INFO: OpenOffice help authoring

2013-04-26 Thread Jürgen Schmidt
Hi,

I tried to find some info (thanks to Ariel for some additional pointers)
about our help format and the help authoring tooling. If somebody has
the time and interest to dive deeper in this material here are the
pointers I have so far.

http://www.openoffice.org/documentation/online_help/

http://www.openoffice.org/documentation/online_help/OOo2HelpAuthoring.pdf

As mentioned earlier I have also investigated in the helpauthoring
extension that is probably useful to maintain and/or create help files.

A version (including the template) can be found under
http://people.apache.org/~jsc/test/helpauthoring.oxt

Nevertheless should we start thinking about a replacement and using a
real online help as preferred solution. And an offline help version as
optional download... Something like that, it would reduce the install
package a lot
