[josm-dev] JOSM Server certificate
Hello, today I switched our server certificate from Globalsign to Wosign. Works fine on my Linux systems also with Java. Could others please test and report if there are Java versions rejecting the certificate. If we have trouble we need to apply for a new Globalsign certificate, which is much more effort than Wosign. The old certificate is still valid till end of December, so there is still a little time. Hello, new server is up and running. Report any issues which have not been there before. Until IP change has been propagated completely connections will be redirected over old machine - this is slow. Enforcing really good security comes later, but then it's a matter of plain software settings instead of totally new concepts. A major fact that prevented all-day encryption are these security fanatics which come with their unpractical all-or-nothing approach. A lot of admins and programmers and other people still have to learn a lot. Enforcing too much will result in to hell with your encryption. At work I currently have trouble with company wide firewall rules which freely allow HTTP, but block any self-signed certificate. So actually they block the higher security level due to misunderstood concepts. And that's only one example of the many troubles out there. [josm-dev] JOSM Server Sponsoring (Hetzner)
Hello, as the 1 year sponsoring is over in February I asked for an update. Hetzner updated the sponsoring for another year, so we don't need to find a new server for 2014. Server works fine after most of the performance issues caused by WebCrawlers have been reduced (not by totally prohibiting crawling like some sites do, but by adapted I/O settings). Thanks a lot to Hetzner for their sponsoring! Some stats: The server delivers between 20 and 30 GB data a day and about 750 GB a month. One third of this is the daily backup :-) We could deliver 4TB without bandwidth restriction, so there is some space for growth. Maybe, having a subdomain for static content might be worth a try (getting rid of cookies, sessions etc.). /maps is cached now. In a test I saw that editing the maps page is awful slow. It really must be splitted. Takes about 45 seconds to change the page (after I improved the validation, before it took many minutes). It's also hard to edit a wiki page that long. I've been copying the page out to a text editor, editing it, the pasting it back in. With the size the page is I think it should either be split into multiple sub-pages (global, Americas, Europe, etc) or managed with source code version control. The Wiki was not designed for a massive XML page. Trying to edit the wiki page is why I started the project to abstract away the imagery XML into separate files. My GitHub project already breaks apart the JOSM imagery XML into one file per entry to make it easier to edit and can be combined back together to build the JOSM imagery XML again. ___ josm-dev mailing list josm-dev@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/josm-dev
[josm-dev] JOSM Server
Hello, additional to Pauls text some background information: We had server troubles regarding the database performance for about 2 years now. Mainly these issues have been caused by the increasing activity of you all which resulted in growing database and activity. SqLite is a very simple database and got to its limits. The JOSM-Trac was too successful (one of the reasons why there are so many spam attempts :-) To fix the database issues I wanted to change to postgresql instead, which is more suitable for the current requirements. As the change of the database is a big issue and the current server had no IPV6 connectivity I simply asked Hetzner for sponsoring a new server not really expecting a positive answer. But they said yes immediatelly, so database upgrade also got server move. I promised them some unobtrusive advertising for their sponsoring, but there is no contract enforcing this. BTW: Why Hetzner - I use them private and in company a lot and they are pretty good. So I got a complete new server instead of only a new database. The hosting with FOSSGIS was fine, nothing to blame about this (the IPV6 issue is due to the fact GFZ has no IPV6 yet). Thought an own server is always a bit better. So instead of only doing the database update we also have a new server now (still database migration was much more work than the server move - we have a pretty good guide for server migration right now, we did it 2 times in the past :-). Regarding new server, database: There needs to be a little more finetuning, so the setup does not exceed the available ressources - The defaults of web server and database are very ressource hungry for no good reason. Please report any issues - I expect some more troubles in the next days, but hopefully we have some time until we exceed limits next time. So lots of thanks again to FOSSGIS who provided server space for us for such a long time. As there is enough demand for computer power in the OSM community I believe the old server soon will get used for other fancy purposes. Others are dynamic and usually for good reason. Others are plain static (like e.g. the downloads, icons, ...). There is little we can gain by optimizing this further. What creates a lot of load are necessary database accesses and sometimes large results. Reducing them would reduce the service of JOSM. As long as we get the required server power there is no need to restrict service. somewhere so you don't require database actions every time someone starts JOSM. Actually the amount of connects by JOSM itself can be ignored compared to the web spiders, SPAM bots, hacker attempts and all the other things accessing a webpage nowadays. And the wiki, ticket and svn stuff is pretty dynamic. If only real users would access the webpage we would have less trouble. Blocking stuff for spiders on the other hand is also no good idea, as web search engines like Google are the main entrypoint to the pages (f.e. we have pretty good clicktrough rates with Google.) OTOH that makes stuff more complicated - will have to think about a useful solution. Would you consider requesting the imagery.xml from a separate server? For now, that project contains a script that spits out tons of JSON documents. The goal is to store those JSON documents in GitHub and write scripts that write out files in formats specific to the various editors. These files could then be grabbed by the editors themselves. I'm considering doing the same sort of thing for presets, but obviously that would require more coordination. Hello, the JOSM Server moved and I'm now the official maintainer :-) During the server changes I also introduced some news - TRAC now supports lots of options it did not support before. a) State NEEDINFO has been introduced. b) Trac has now Bayes-filtering for SPAM detection. It will take some time till the filter is trained well. Currently it is good but ignores some stuff. c) Trac now supports email notifications. d) New Links http://josm.openstreetmap.org/latest and http://josm.openstreetmap.org/tested return software versions e) TRAC allow to register logins for those of you, who use it more often. f) Whereas #1234 allowed to reference a bug and r1234 or [1234] a change we now have #o1234 and [o1234] to reference reports and changes in the main OSM bug tracker/svn. g) The is a close as duplicate action which closes as duplicate and enters that fact in the duplicate report. Comments, errors, suggestions wellcome. Don't inform me about new SPAM during the next week and also do nothing with it. I will handle that.
