Re: [ANNOUNCE] Apache Royale 0.9.0 Released

2018-01-30 Thread Carlos Rovira
Thanks Piotr! I introduced the new texts.

@Dave, I think we are ready for review. Remember that is in preproduction
WP site.

If all is ok we can publish it in production, and announce in facebook and
twitter.

Thanks!

Carlos

I’m saying (1) comparing a project that had millions of downloads and a 10 year
history on a domain separate from and prior to acceptance in the Apache
Incubator did not need to argue for a separate user facing site. That it was
9GB meant that Infra wanted it separate. How spent a lot of effort
parallelizing and using ZFS on the CMS so that I would stop sledgehammering
overtime I changed the template.

By 100s of emails I mean that we already discussed in numerous emails on
multiple lists royalesdk.org. I really don’t want to do it again.

Cool, thanks for testing. Yes, as I mentioned in this thread [1], I had a
modify the package.json and a couple of .js files that deal with
downloading the dependencies.
But the Royale SDK part is exactly the same. Since the NPM release is not
an official Apache release, it is okay for us to claim that this is Apache
Royale v0.9.0.

It will be better for us as an organization if we maintain scoped releases
instead of one offs. I see this trend in other projects as well. For
example, the latest Angular code is available under the @angular org:
https://www.npmjs.com/~angular. Vue is available under @vue:
https://www.npmjs.com/org/vue

This approach would also protect us from outsiders taking up package names
that might cause confusion with our packages. Only we can deploy packages
under the @apache-royale namespace going forward.

Om

Sorry for the late response. I'm occupy by several tasks, also Royale one.
:) I just look into the website and I think if you add similar section as
releases called "Source code" and put there:

" Download the source code of Royale from one of the Apache mirror sites: "

I think it's enough. Let's push it. Dave and Andrew can review it.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Apache Royale 0.9.0 Released

2018-01-30 Thread Carlos Rovira
Hi Alex,

I think we provide all what they ask us to provide. We just only need the
text for source code bundles to put in source code page, and we can add a
link for source code and GitHub pages in download page. So we have in place
all the things they ask. And we use our own presentation since we pursue
and objective to compete with project like React or Angular. So I don't see
any reason of weight to make us start wasting time making changes that, IMO
will end having a worst site that the current one.

the focus in on source code? ok, we'll soon have more info on how to get
source code.
the focus is to get commiters? ok, we have in all pages a call to arms
banner that ask people to join and link to mailing list. Moreover we have a
safe button (top - right corner) with a icon of user+ that again as people
to join us with a big button to join mailing list.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Apache Royale 0.9.0 Released

2018-01-30 Thread Alex Harui
Hi Carlos,

We are under the rulings of the Apache Brand committee. I've seen them
request changes to other project sites in order to conform to certain
branding standards for consistency. It appears that whatever is on
project.a.o needs to attract new committers and emphasize source code.
So, whatever is on royale.a.o is not fully our decision. If someone from
Branding notices something a couple of months from now and doesn't like
it, we'll have to change it.

Apache Open Office has a user-facing domain and site. We weren't allowed
to have one because the Branding folks only wanted to allow pre-existing
domains, but IMO, they did not come up with a reason why allowing other
projects to have user-facing domains would harm the ASF.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Apache Royale 0.9.0 Released

2018-01-30 Thread Carlos Rovira
Hi Alex,

I have to say that I'd not like that direction at all. I think that after
many efforts for our part, we are getting a good organization and we have
the opportunity to compete with other technologies if we get some other
things we really need. Instead, if we go down that route we'll be providing
something that people coming could see it as something from the old school.
We must honor what people coming to us expect from us while compiling with
what Apache want for s to do. I think now we are proving both in a good mix
that is our brand.

IMHO, we need work in the Royale docs and we'll be with almost all the
public pieces for our users set. Then as I always say we need a good
working royale UI set.

I think although we are an Apache project we have our own personality and
while is great to copy others, we only need to copy things that really fit
us. But I think body and old organization only because many apache project
make in that way without thinking in what our project really demands will
be not good for our project.

But that's only my opinion

Thanks

Carlos

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Apache Royale 0.9.0 Released

2018-01-30 Thread Alex Harui
We could appeal to have royalesdk.org allowed as our user-facing site.
IMO, VP Branding never gave us a really good reason why it would be bad
for Apache to allow it. Every Apache project site I looked at is geared
towards committers as well as users. I don't think we can avoid appealing
to committers on royale.a.o.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Apache Royale 0.9.0 Released

2018-01-30 Thread Carlos Rovira
Hi Alex,

We are providing all of this. We can discuss the best organization, I think
is right to add a links in the Downloads page to Source Code and Github so
people interested could go directly to that point. I think that while we
are providing all what Apache require from us we as well are organizing and
presenting in a more modern way and more near to what people expect and
what others are doing.

For two sites, I think we already have it and are ok with apache rules.
Remember that royalesdk.org was not allowed by apache brand and legal. So
for me royale.a.o is the marketing site and Github (where code resides) is
the "code" site and something directly prepared for people that wants the
code.

Just my 2 ctnms

2018-01-30 Thread Carlos Rovira
No, I'm talking about this page: http://royale.apache.org/source-code/
(link is the footer since its priority is low)

For all: I updated as well the Home in the pre-production with the NPM info
so you can check. I added the "NPM" link to footer menu as well, as it was
some time ago before first website release.

Hi, please check downloads page in preproduction site (WP site) and let me
know is ready for publication.

I'll wait for Andrew text for Source code page to introduce buttons to
download source code bundles

thanks

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Apache Royale 0.9.0 Released

2018-01-30 Thread Piotr Zarzycki
Carlos,

Are you refering by source code - specific TAG in the repository ? If you
wanted to point to the sources you need to point sources for the all three
repository. Point to the 0.9.0 released tag.

But what is for on the Download page link to the sources ? Just to address
other type of users ? If they want to come and help us we have GitHub link
on our page.

Thanks, Piotr

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Apache Royale 0.9.0 Released

2018-01-30 Thread Carlos Rovira
Hi Alex,

Thinking about this and I think is not right. We define Downloads page with
the following phrase:

"Here you can find the binary distributions of Apache Royale SDK for you to
download."

the source is in the "source code" page and in the Github link.

I think that's the right way, since we provide the separated spaces to do
that, and make it more clear for users coming
(as I mentioned before, we should have two basic types of users, people
wanting to get the binaries to go fast without worry about more, and
people more advanced, first will go to downloads, and second will go to
source code page or directly to gihub link.

But, We should change the source code page with the links to the source
code bundles.
@Andrew can you provide a text and right links to source code so I can make
the same and put in Source code page?

thanks

mmm...it seems to me that README is the main file in GitHub. People that
goes to gihub would want to use royale building it.
In the other hand folks coming to the website use to be more like "users"
that wants the binaries and only have the more easy use

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Apache Royale 0.9.0 Released

2018-01-29 Thread Alex Harui
Hi Om,

I ran the install. I don't think the package.json is the one from the
released source artifact, so I think we might need to call this a nightly.
But it does seem to work!

Thanks for figuring something out so folks don't have to use URLs. One
question though: Is having folks use @apache-royale/royale-js better than
some day having folks use just apache-royale-js or might we switch to
apache-royale-js some day? I've never seen the @org/package before, but I
don't use NPM much, so I don't know what folks expect.

Thanks,
-Alex

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Apache Royale 0.9.0 Released

2018-01-29 Thread Alex Harui
IMO, we need to list the source package first. Apache is about source.

This is why I still think about a marketing site and domain that is more
like the other JS frameworks out there.

Here is the FlexJS 0.8.0 Download page in case it helps:
http://flex.apache.org/download-flexjs.html

My 2 cents,
-Alex

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Apache Royale 0.9.0 Released

2018-01-29 Thread Andrew Wetmore
What about text like this for the download page on the website?
===

The current version of Apache Royale is 0.9.0, released in January, 2018.
It is beta-quality. This means that Royale may not work entirely as you or
we want it to, and that certain “standard” components or functions are not
yet available. However, you can create applications in Royale and compile
them to run either in a browser window or on the Flash/AIR platforms.

*Download *the compiled (binary) version of Royale from one of the Apache
mirror sites:

To create JavaScript applications only:
http://www.apache.org/dyn/closer.lua/royale/0.9.0/binaries/apache-royale-0.9.0-bin-js.tar.gz
http://www.apache.org/dyn/closer.lua/royale/0.9.0/binaries/apache-royale-0.9.0-bin-js.zip

To create JavaScript or Flash applications:
http://www.apache.org/dyn/closer.lua/royale/0.9.0/binaries/apache-royale-0.9.0-bin-js-swf.tar.gz
http://www.apache.org/dyn/closer.lua/royale/0.9.0/binaries/apache-royale-0.9.0-bin-js-swf.zip

Copy the contents of the download into a directory on your computer, then
connect it to the IDE you are using.

*NPM*:

If you use npm, [WHAT GOES HERE?]

Go for it. I don't have time for that today.

Apache is very source-code oriented since it is about Open Source. In
fact, to Apache, the binaries are not official releases, just convenience
artifacts. So websites, readme's and lots of other things are supposed to
be about working from the source code.

We could put a different README in the binary artifacts. I just don't
know how many people will read it instead of the "Get Started" we put on
the docs page soon.

In the "release" section we are interested into the binary package only.
User have to download it and use in the choosen IDE. That is all.

2018-01-29 Thread Andrew Wetmore
I as a reader would want to see a summary of what is in the release, where
and how to get it, and what to do with it once I have it. The same
information would go into the appropriate pages in the help docs. I can do
a rough cut based on what I see in the README files, unless somebody with
more knowledge wants to do the first draft.

On that front, here is a naive reader's question: I see lots of
instructions in the README about compiling Royale, as if that were
something I would always have to do. Then, almost as a throw-away, I see
notes about the already-compiled binaries. Does EVERYBODY download and
build Royale for themselves? I would have thought your average app-builder
would start with the compiled binaries and just want to know how to
reference them from the IDE of choice.

2018-01-29 Thread Piotr Zarzycki
Carlos,

I'm not sure what to write in the "Release" section here [1]. Maybe Andrew
could suggest something. I know only that in that section should landed
installation through npm. Take a look into above announce. Mac and Windows
version.

I have noticed that many times in Alex's emails, but have never bother with
that, cause I was just copy whole things. Yep we could use some short
versions.

Thanks for pointing that.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Apache Royale 0.9.0 Released

2018-01-29 Thread Andrew Wetmore
I see what the problem is: Because the URLs are long the announcement,
which has hard returns instead of line wrapping, inserts a "_" character at
the line break:

http://mirror.dsrg.utoronto.ca/apache/royale/0.9.0/binaries/apache-royale-0._9.0-bin-js.zip

With the "_" removed the download works properly.

We should consider providing shorter alias URLs to avoid this issue, or at
least naming it so people like me can catch and fix it instead of maybe
giving up.

What do you see when you go to that link [1] ? Can you post the screenshot.
