My biggest objection here is that it blindly enables things, which
continues to make our package set a web of inter-dependencies and
makes any attempts at minimization harder. I don't think we should
default to building everything in here. I understand autotools might
do that, but I wouldn't necessarily call autotools a best practice to
begin with...

It's a bit confusing, but Igor is proposing that we *disable* auto
feature detection by passing -Dauto_features=enabled. Um, what? Yes,
the options are enabled, auto (default), and disabled, where both
enabled and disabled turn off auto feature detection. enabled is used
to fail the build whenever an auto dependency is missing, and disabled
is used to allow the build to proceed without that feature.

-Dauto_features=auto is the meson default, and it's what we currently
suffer with autotools: features get silently enabled or disabled
depending on which BuildRequires are present in the spec file. This is
the status quo, and it's a disaster. Auto dependencies are good if
you're building packages locally and don't want to install unnecessary
dependencies (hence a good default behavior), but very bad if you're a
Linux distribution building packages for other people to use and now
have a broken or inferior package due to a desireable dependency being
disabled by mistake. I'm pretty sure there's no argument for keeping
this behavior when building Fedora packages.

We had originally forbidden the use of meson's auto features in GNOME
due to this problem (the automagic dependencies problem [1]), which
annoyed the Meson developers and led to the creation of this
-Dauto_features option. Now it's safe to recommend using auto features,
because we assume distros will build with -Dauto_features=enabled. With
this setting, if you want to disable a feature that's recommended by
upstream, you'll now have to explicitly disable it, which is surely
what we want to avoid features disappearing by mistake.

Then on the other end of the spectrum, -Dauto_features=disabled would
disable all auto features... that would make packagers responsible for
constantly monitoring the upstream feature set with every release and
making choices about what to enable or disable. It sounds like you
might be advocating this option, but that does not seem at all
practical to me. Packagers sometimes know better than upstream which
features should be enabled in Fedora, but not usually. And packagers
might sometimes audit the upstream feature list after new releases to
see if new features should be enabled... but that seems like a rarity
to me. If we use -Dauto_features=disabled, a bunch of important
features will go missing, and Fedora will suffer from that. So let's
trust upstream by default, and override where it makes sense.

Yes, it's intended that distributions like Fedora build with
-Dauto_features=enabled. We should definitely do so. Otherwise,
desireable features will inevitably be disabled by mistake.

Fedora 29 Self-Contained Change: Merge Dstat And Performance Co-Pilot

2018-07-23 Thread Ben Cotton
Summary
Dstat is a resource statistics
tool for the local host. Performance Co-Pilot is a
system performance analysis toolkit.

This change will merge the existing python2 dstat utility and
associated dstat package into the pcp-system-tools package
where a python3 implementation is provided.

A symbolic link and package replacement rules will streamline the transition.

Owner
* Name: Nathan Scott
* Email: nath...@redhat.com
* Name: David Kaspar
* Email: dkas...@redhat.com

Detailed Description
The original dstat utility has reached end of life - it does not
support python3 and there are no plans to update it. It has been
unsupported upstream for some time. However, it is a widely used and
much loved tool. The Performance Co-Pilot (PCP) project has produced
a pcp-dstat utility which strives for 100% output compatibility
with the original dstat.

The new pcp-dstat utility displays metric values and metadata
(e.g. units) by accessing the PCP python APIs. This utility was first
included in PCP version 4.1.0 which is now available in all supported
Fedora versions, in the pcp-system-tools package. It is invoked
as: 'pcp dstat'.

This proposed change will transition Fedora to provide
/usr/bin/dstat as a symbolic link to the pcp-dstat script, and
will deprecate the original dstat package which requires python2.

Benefit to Fedora
There are several benefits.First and foremost - the original
motivation - we are able to continue to provide the primary dstat
functionality in a python3-based system.

In addition to providing the same compact, colourful output that the
original dstat provided, the new utility also supports distributed
analysis (monitoring one host from another) using PCP protocol, and
retrospective analysis via Performance Co-Pilot archives.

A configuration file format for plugins has been introduced to
pcp-dstat(1). This was on the original dstat roadmap for many
years, but not implemented. Because PCP metrics can be accessed by
name, and have strong metadata (including units), a generalised plugin
configuration is possible which allows pcp-dstat to display any
Performance Co-Pilot metric values. All of the original dstat
"builtin" plugins as well as many of the "extended" plugins are
provided by these configuration files, below the /etc/pcp/dstat
directory.

Customised plugins are encouraged and supported in pcp-dstat
just as they were in the original dstat, except these are now
configuration files rather than python code.

Scope
* Proposal owners:
The primary goal has been accomplished - providing the python3
pcp-dstat utility. The remaining effort involves ensuring a clean
transition through packaging updates. The pcp-system-tools package
will need to provide a spec file Obsoletes line and symbolic link in
/usr/bin/dstat to complete the transition - this final stage of work
has not yet been done.

* Other developers: N/A (not a System Wide Change)

* Release engineering: #7648

* Policies and guidelines: N/A (not a System Wide Change)

* Trademark approval: N/A (not needed for this Change)

Upgrade/compatibility impact
On upgrade, a system with dstat installed will be seamlessly
transitioned to using the pcp-system-tools package. The command
output format is the same.

The original dstat provided a facility for adding new (python2 code)
'plugins' to provide user-customisable metric reports. This feature
remains, but instead uses the configuration files for providing this
extension. Performance Co-Pilot allows arbitrary metrics to be added
to the framework as well (via PMDAs - Performance Metric Domain
Agents).

The upstream PCP mailing list, books, man pages and tutorials can be
used for anyone wishing to add new metrics, which will then be
automatically available to pcp-dstat configuration files for
displaying.

How To Test
1. Install pcp-system-tools

2. Verify that /usr/bin/dstat is now a symbolic link to
pcp-dstat and that the dstat package is no longer installed.

3. Run dstat and compare the output to the original dstat utility.

User Experience
Users of the dstat utility will have an improved analysis experience
using pcp-dstat, as not only is it more easily extended through
configuration files instead of python2 code, it also offers
distributed (remote hosts) and retrospective (historical) analysis
capabilities that the original utility does not provide.

Dependencies
The pcp-system-tools package depends on python3-pcp, which in
turn depends on pcp-libs and python3.

Fedora 29 Self-Contained Change: Liberation Fonts 2

2018-07-23 Thread Ben Cotton
Summary
Upgrading Liberation fonts in Fedora to Liberation 2.00.3 version.
Presently we are having Liberation fonts 1.07.4. Both version has its
advantages and disadvantages. Users interested in using Liberation
1.07.4 can install it from Copr repo.

Owner
* Name: Pravin Satpute, [[User:Pnemade| Parag
Nemade]], Vishal Vijayraghavan
* Email: psatpute AT redhat DOT com, pnemade AT redhat DOT com,
vvijayra AT redhat DOT com

Detailed Description
Liberation 1.07.4:
This is traditional version for Liberation fonts.

Advantages:
* It has bytecode hinting instructions and works very well.
* In uses from long time.
Disadvantages:
* Not good Unicode character coverage.
* License: Liberation

Liberation 2.00.3:

Advantages
* Wide character coverage.
** Latest Version - Older Version
** 2302 (sans) - 667
** 2274 (mono) - 666
** 2303 (serif) - 662
* License: OFL
Disadvantage
* Not bytecode hinting instructions.

We tried to change Liberation 1.07.4 with Liberation 2.00.3 in
Fedora 19
but due to regression about hinting, we revoked
this change.

Over the period many users suggested for upgrade. We had discussion on
fedora devel lists and also in fedora i18n meeting about same.

With this change planning to upgrade Fedora version to 2.00.3 and
provide Copr repo for 1.07.5

TODO List:
1. Update Liberation 2.00.3 in Fedora (Done)
2. Split Liberation Narrow fonts from Liberation 1.07.4. (Done)
3. Package Liberation-narrow-fonts in Fedora (Ongoing)
4. Build Liberation 1.07.5 in copr.

Benefit to Fedora
Liberation 2.00.3 has wider character coverage and automated hinting
instructions. Uuser interested in liberation 1.07.5 can install it
from copr repo.

Scope
* Proposal owners:
** Presently liberation upstream has both version in single repo (in different branch).
Upstream project splitting required. [Done]
** Update Liberation 2.00.3 in Fedora (Done)
** Split Liberation Narrow fonts from Liberation 1.07.5. (Done)
** Package Liberation-narrow-fonts in Fedora (Ongoing)
** Build Liberation 1.07.4 in copr.

Upgrade/compatibility impact
* Liberation 1.07.4 will be updated to Liberation 2.00.3
* User interested in Liberation 1.07.4 need to install it from Copr
Upgrade will be smooth.

How To Test
* Check whether Liberation Fonts 2.00.3 has been installed or not.
* Try to install Liberation 1.07.5 and see if users can use it properly.

Contingency Plan
* Drop the change and move to next release.

Documentation
Not at this moment, planning to update github.

Can we discuss this more? I would really like to see Fedora become a
bit more explicit about things overall.

Re: dnf history - change in how rpmdb checksum is computed

2018-07-23 Thread Jeff Johnson
The real problem is that both E:N-V-R.A and N-E:V-R.A are equally imprecise.

The concept of "reproducible builds/installs" requires much more complete
identifiers for serious work. But that was not the question asked in this
thread.

So calculating both checksums, on rearranged plaintext items, for
compatibility, kinda misses the underlying need to verify system installs on
hundreds of machines.

RFC: Pass --auto-features=enabled in meson

2018-07-23 Thread Igor Gnatenko
Hello,

meson 0.47.0 has new option type - feature

(tri-state option - enabled/disabled/auto). It is quite common that in
autofoo and less in cmake worlds people rely on auto-detection of
dependencies and enabling features based on those.

I believe that for distribution we should make sure that all default
features are enabled and if not, packager should explicitly disable
feature. For instance when I was testing some RPM patches for new
compression types, it was disabling some default feature because the
configure script was written in a wrong way.

It would be nice if we could have some standardized way of specifying
options for buildsystems which would convert into autofoo/cmake/meson way
of specifying parameters but this is topic for another discussion.

Thoughts? Objections?

Unless there is strong opposition, I'm going to switch this parameter in
%meson macro and you would be able to change its value by redefining
%__meson_auto_features.

If you used dnf to enable the copr repository, then "dnf list --all
kernel" should show you at least one from there. An upgrade won't work
if the version in the copr is lower than the latest one in the main
Fedora repo, so you might need to do a dnf install with the specific

I need installation instructions to use this kernel, apparently. I've
got the copr enabled, but can't figure out how to actually install the
kernel and kernel modules.

Note that sticking "%undefine _annotated_build" to the top of the

Forget that statement, I haven't recreated the SRPM. It actually fixes

I've been asking about names of those 144 packages.
As long as concern about used disk space used during Fedora packages
builds was main reason of introduction direct BRs for C/C++ compiler
I'm 100% sure that it is possible to reduce even more such minimal
packages set.
Simple it would be good to have look on this list and I'm sure that
between many of those packages from such minimal list are some
dependencies which could removed/corrected to allow form even smaller
list.
Second propose of publishing names of those packages is to probably
tweak list of current BRs as it is not possible to build even simplest
package without any of those packages.

Just please post here result of the command like "rpm -qa --qf
'%{NAME}\n' | sort | xargs"

Likely they are just busy with other things, hopefully they will get to it.

The processes run are listed in the mail on 16 July. The apps are mostly
Firefox with half a dozen tabs or so, Konsole with few tabs, Dolphin etc on
a KDE Plasma desktop. Occasionally postgresql database with a python2.7
application, but the `perf' traces were taken while these aren't running.

Need Sponsor for WPE webkit packages.

2018-07-23 Thread BunnyApocalypse
Hello everyone,

I have mostly finished the packaging process for a suite of packages around WPE
webkit, a webkit port optimized for low powered/embedded devices. I have had
the generic backend package that the main package itself depends on approved by
a reviewer.

However, I still need a sponsor in order to actually finish the process of
packaging. I intend to continue contributing to the Fedora project as a
packager once this group of packages get through, and would really appreciate
someone taking me on as a sponsor to help me as I continue to learn the process.

Here are the related package reviews:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1601186 (wpewebkit)
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1601058 (wpebackend)
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1602078 (wpebackend-fdo)
Thanks,

Re: F29 System Wide Change: OpenLDAP without Non-threaded Libraries

Florian is right, the idea is to make changes to the source code
(probably a downstream patch will be needed) such that the threaded
library will be built twice, once with libldap soname and once with
libldap_r soname, and the non-threaded libldap won't be shipped at
all.

The non-threaded version basically provides a subset of capabilities of
the threaded version, which are additionally thread safe
(i.e. mutexes). There shouldn't be really any noticeable change.

Does this make sense?

So can it happen that both the libraries will be loaded at the same time
by a single process (one of them for example through libcurl)?

Will everything work as expected in this case?

It's certainly quite risky, and many things can go wrong (dlopen of the
dormant copy of the library, ELF constructors running twice).

Matus, have you considered turning libldap.so into a linker script
(referencing libdap_r.so) and libldap-2.4.so.2 into a stub which only
depends on libldap_r-2.4.so.2? The dynamic linker will then search
libldap_r if the application links against libldap.

Thanks,
Florian

License clarification of libmodulemd - MIT

2018-07-23 Thread Stephen Gallagher
I recently released libmodulemd 1.6.x into Fedora. It was always labeled as
MIT license in the spec file and intended that way, but due to an incorrect
copy-paste, most of the files in the tarball had actually been indicating
that they were MITNFA instead. I fixed that upstream and 1.6.x is properly
licensed as MIT.

File provides in %{_bindir} and %{_sbindir} aren't supposed to trigger
filelist download as far as I know.

The thing is that the reality have not changed since the #549. The
primary metadata still contains the data about /usr/bin and several
other directories as they used to and DNF still downloads entire file lists.

At that time, I was proposing to allow file dependencies generally. But
at the end, they are now more discouraged then they were previously. I
would love to see the guidelines changed, but I am not going to drive
it. One failure was enough.

FWIW I can help co-maintain json as it's a build dependency of one

Could we just update dnf/"newyum" to calculate both checksums and
only represent the discontinuity if neither match? Obviously this
increases the chance of a collision, but could put this conversation
to rest.

At some distant point in the future we can stop calculating 'E:N-V-R.A'
since all new transactions would have been calculated based on 'N-E:V-R.A'

That's true, but in any case it's all irrelevant because as I understand
it dnf always downloads the full filelists anyway.

It was yum that was optimised not to do so.

Re: Build failures of packages which use waf as build system

2018-07-23 Thread Thomas Moschny
Please note that we have two different issues here, with different solutions:

- Packages using an embedded waf: as the upstream waf script uses a
shebang like '#! /usr/bin/env python', these packages fail due to the
removal of the unversioned Python binary and should call their waf
copy using one of the %{__python2} or %{__python3} macros, and BR on
python2-devel or python3-devel to get the macros.

- Packages using the system-wide waf script in the Python3 variant
(note that waf is using alternatives, so /usr/bin/waf can be either
using Python2 or Python3, depending on the declared BRs): these will
currently fail in rawhide, as the version in rawhide is not fully
Python3-compatible, which will be fixed soon.

(Of course packages using embedded waf, and calling it via
%{__python3} will likely also see the second issue, and should simply
update their embedded waf script.)

glibc-common is an internal implementation detail of glibc.  You
should not add dependencies on it.

For building against the C run-time, you should only specify

   Requires: gcc

or (if necessary)

   Requires: gcc-c++

This is explained here:

That's actually a reasonable request, but it cannot be expressed with
the current packaging. I filed an enhancement request for glibc:

 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1607366

Until this is implemented (hopefully quite soon, and I will also
backport this to Fedora 27 and 28), you simply cannot express such
fine-grained dependencies, and you need to rely on the tools being
included in the buildroot implicitly.

Thanks,
Florian

Thanks. Also does someone have any information how our flags affects
performance?
(which is also important for the upstream project)

Currently -D_GLIBCXX_ASSERTIONS has fairly negative effects on
performance of some code using the C++ standard library. GCC is not
able to optimise away as many of the checks as we initially thought.

Do you know if anything else besides ?
That one at least a simple source-level fix (probably fixing a real
bug in some cases): Use size_type/size_t for the index variable.

That's the only specific example I'm aware of, but there might be
plenty of correct code using unsigned for the loop variable, which
gets pessimised by the assertions. It's unusual to have more than
UINT_MAX elements in a vector, so we can't just say such code needs
fixing.

It's not just about -D_GLIBCXX_ASSERTIONS. The type mismatch inhibits
loop optimizations in general (looks like strength reduction in particular).

I don't agree with your resolution.

c/ppport.h is "GPL+ or Artistic". Because Fedora does not permit Artistic, the
file is compiled as "GPL+". And if you link GPL+ code into an Artistic 2.0 code
(lib/Params/Validate/XS.c), the result is tainted by GPL. Thus the binary
package must state GPL+ in the license tag.

Raising to the Fedora legal team for a decision.

glibc-common is an internal implementation detail of glibc. You should
not add dependencies on it.

For building against the C run-time, you should only specify

 Requires: gcc-c++

Please don't recommend that. Instead of munging all packages that use
waf, waf should be fixed. In the other thread the maintainer said they
can do it next week. If more speed is needed, prepare a PR in src.fp.o
and maybe have a provenpackager push the build.

Intent to retire pkpgcounter

2018-07-23 Thread Zdenek Dohnal
Hi everyone,

pkpgcounter (alternative sw written in python2 for counting pages of
several document types - usually covered by CUPS system - and computing
ink coverage needed for printing specific document - never heard of
someone who uses it...) started to fail to build from source.

I would like to retire this package (read it as I will not solve FTBFS
bugzilla, so pkpgcounter will get retired in the future) because of
following reasons:

- dead upstream - the last update on upstream website is 2013

- code is python2 only, which is going to be retired at 1st January 2020
- if someone would like to take the package, then the package will need
to be ported to python3

- AFAIK the package is unused (no user's bugs in long time, no
dependencies on pkpgcounter by other packages...)

Is anyone against pkpgcounter's retirement from Fedora? Does anyone use it?

I actually already filed the respective bugs:

There is even PR:

https://github.com/rpm-software-management/dnf/pull/1109

that got blocked for an unknown reason and mainly unknown period.

I wanted to confirm that more people are experiencing this issue,
that it's
not just some "local" network problem. The problem is that dnf does not
respect max_retries option for a repo when mirror manager is being
contacted. I have no idea why it hasn't been fixed yet given that it
affects basically all dnf users and it also quite significantly affects
building in Copr.

Thats a good workaround and we should do it, but I sure wish we could
track down when and why those sporadic 503's come from our mirrorlist
containers. ;(

Perhaps we could add further debugging and track it down. I'll see what
I can do...

Can we use something like Sentry? https://sentry.io/

Thats a non free 3rd party service? no thanks. :)

It's an libre service we can run by ourselves if desired.

The question is not about Fedora comps, but about comps from the Koji
repository:

https://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org/repos/rawhide/latest/x86_64/

specifically:

https://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org/repos/rawhide/latest/x86_64/repodata/db824c6dd6664943bcec0a8fcd3bda7fc855e5a787623c0da6d49deb79438fc7-comps.xml

Where are these coming from? How to fix them? I'd love to see the
examples above to behave correctly, i.e. to not install gcc.

I opened releng ticket to track this: https://pagure.io/releng/issue/7649

Can I type python2 without absolute path? If so it's even easier...

Legit question, rpm -E %{__python2} results in /usr/bin/python2 not in
python2

Sometimes you need full path, sometimes just the name of the command. To
run (execute) python2, you just need the command (but path also works).

Try this on the command line:

$ python2 --version
Python 2.7.15
$ /usr/bin/python2 --version
Python 2.7.15
