Igor is the only "admin" for the rust-sig group in koschei. However,
this is one of the few things that are actually automated:
The list of packages in the rust-sig group in koschei is regularly
synced from the packages that are maintained by @rust-sig group on
src.fedoraproject.org.
Note that this syncing is not instantaneous, but sometimes takes a
while (a few hours or days, depending on the timing, I think).

Done. Sorry for the delay, I was running behind on my mailing lists
during the holidays.

One question: I don't seem to be able to register a package into the
Koschei rust-sig group, so for new packages I'm adding, they are
currently ungrouped.

Who has access to this? I'm already a member of rust-sig in FAS.

Thanks,

This is a nice fit
/var/lib/rpm -> /usr/var/lib/rpm

But it's an ask directed at those who have already implemented this
change, if it's compelling enough for them to change again.

Going back to the original discussions on moving rpmdb...

Preferred is a new top-level location in /usr, .e.g /usr/sysimage/rpm.
Next is "least worst" in /usr/lib/sysimage/rpm
http://lists.rpm.org/pipermail/rpm-maint/2017-October/006764.html
http://lists.rpm.org/pipermail/rpm-maint/2017-October/006722.html

And the convergence was on /usr/lib/sysimage/rpm
http://lists.rpm.org/pipermail/rpm-maint/2017-October/006785.html

I don't see how /state solves the problem, rather than just
rearranging the chairs.

Should /usr be independently portable? And is that with a version
matched /opt, or can there be mix and match revisions of /usr and
/opt?

If /usr is to be truly portable and have e.g. 'rpm query, verify,
remove, reinstall' work as expected, you need the metadata (the
database) representing its state to always come along for the ride.
Either the database is already in /usr, or you have to make sure /usr
and /state are inseparable.

If /usr and /state are inseparable, and if rpm can also describe
anything in /etc or /var or /opt, then all or part of those
directories are also inseparable from /state. And thus /usr. So I
think /state doesn't help.

To what degree do rpm and dnf intend to touch locations outside of
/usr *and care* about tracking those changes? I think rpm can't remain
static for all time. It either needs to become aware of multiple root
trees, and even mix and match top-level directories to create variable
roots. And possibly even manage these things. Or it needs to constrain
its reach to /usr and /opt. Whether /usr and /opt are tied together,
or can be mix and match with their own rpmdb's, I have no strong
opinion on.

+Because Perl methods are just regular subroutines, it's difficult to tell
+what's a method and what's just an imported function. As a result, imported
+functions can be called as methods on your objects. This pragma will delete
+imported functions from your class's symbol table, thereby ensuring that
+your interface is as you specified it. However, code inside your module
+will still be able to use the imported functions without any problems.

xen soname bump with 4.16.0 release

2022-01-10 Thread Michael Young
I have built an update of xen to the 4.16.0 release on rawhide in the
f36-build-side-49362 side tag. This changes most library
versions in the xen-libs package. I believe that the qemu and libvirt
packages will need to be rebuilt due to the version change.

dosbox-staging license change: from GPLv2+ to GPLv3+

2022-01-10 Thread Otto Urpelainen
I have changed the License field of dosbox-staging from GPLv2+ to
GPLv3+. That has been the correct license from start, but previously,
licenses of this package's many bundled dependencies were not
considered. Most of the licenses are permissive or public domain-like,
but one is GPLv3+, which becomes the effective license.

There's no way to tell pagure.io "everyone in the fedora packager group
thats a manager is a admin here", so I have manually been adding any
sponsor who replies to a ticket.

I suppose if we wanted we could manually list everyone out and add them
and then add new folks as they became sponsors.

Self Introduction: Brad Smith (aka buckaroogeek)

2022-01-10 Thread Brad Smith
Greetings

Peter Hunt (aka haircommander) asked if I might be interested in
assisting with the maintenance of the kubernetes packages for Fedora.
I have the time and interest and some of the needed skills. I am
certainly willing to learn.

I am a retired senior manager for a U.S federal agency (US Forest
Service). I have a background in software development over the past
several decades contributing PRs for a number of open source projects
but am not an active member of any specific project. I have a number
of repositories on github including several fedora specific ansible
roles (https://github.com/buckaroogeek?tab=repositories). I also
recently submitted a short note to fedora magazine about some
optimizations to DNF that are useful on low/expensive bandwidth
internet connections (see
https://fedoramagazine.org/use-the-dnf-local-plugin-to-speed-up-your-home-lab/).

Fedora is my primary OS at home for my workstation and Raspberry Pi
kubernetes cluster. The RPi4s all use Fedora 35 minimal currently with
ongoing experiments with Fedora CoreOS. I started with Fedora 2,
switching from Red Hat desktop.

I have long been an open source advocate. During my federal career, I
was the principal open source advocate within the Forest Service IT
team. I led the adoption of collaborative source code management, and
the adoption and use of open source tools and code. I installed and
managed Enterprise SourceForge in the early 1990s for the agency and
was an active leader in moving the agency from SUSE and AIX to RHEL as
the primary OS in our data centers.

Looking forward to contributing where I can.

Best wishes

Brad

So I'm pretty sure the qtwebengine fail was also caused by the
pkgconfig file bug you noted. I've sent a new build of re2 that fixes
that bug, and am trying qtwebengine again. If that works, I'll look at
the others, but that's the one that's blocking Rawhide so it's the
highest priority right now.

Well, os-tree is doing filesystem rollback / -rollforward by architecture. If
you want to feed rpm into it, it may be tricky.

But this argues for just moving rpmdb for rpm-oss-tree, since os-tree has its
own logic anyway. No need and no advantage to do it for non-rpm-os-tree systems
as well.

No, this is not about developers tar'ing up `/usr` by hand. It's about cleanly
separating who owns what, and what its lifecycle is, which is critcially
important for both "image based" updates as well as "local client side
snapshots". Both these approaches end up creating more than one copy of
certain files.

See

I struggle to how to even respond to this. Multiple independent groups who
*actually work* on image based updates and/or client side snapshots all
generally agree that the rpmdb should be in /usr.

That's where this Change came in.

On what basis are you making this claim "unnecessary and sort of out of place"?

Yes, we call this "factory reset".
https://github.com/coreos/fedora-coreos-tracker/issues/399
I am not sure where the terminology came from, but it is widely used when
talking about e.g. mobile phones today.

At least from my PoV, the rpmdb is by default read-only (except to rpm-ostree)
along with the rest of /usr, so you can't just rm -rf it alone.

No. An image based updates model (both ostree and container images) ships a
pristine copy that is bit-for-bit the same on every system. Container runtimes
tend to make it mutable by default of course, but that doesn't change the fact
that it's not by default host specific.

We have years of investment in rpm-ostree in the current design. For example,
the tooling supports `rpm-ostree db diff` which shows you the delta between the
current and pending rpmdb.
How would this new directory work? How would it better solve problems that are
today solved with the location in /usr? And do you even have a sense of how
much work would creating for the rpm-ostree stack at least with a new toplevel
directory with new, as yet ill-defined semantics?

That's one interesting definition of "fine"

If I ever see a system with /state I'll automatically assume
this is the only location that's not wiped on a reboot,
invented because the admin gave up on denylisting useless stuff in /var.

The whole proposal is kinda sad to read.
It's 2022 and we're catering to filesystem-level rollbacks.
Filesystem rollbacks *are* a gigantic unsubtle hammer
that should not be used in an automated manner,
or better yet, not used at all.

I *think* what David is suggesting here is that while databases and
container images are indeed changeable data that lives in /var (and
are likely VERY important to the user), they are not critical to the
functioning of the operating system itself. The OS will still boot and
you can still log in[1] if /var is wiped clean, though the system will
probably not be doing anything useful at this point. Whereas if the
RPM database is damaged or removed, a core function of the operating
system (installation and updates) will no longer work.

I think there is definite value in considering adding a new location
(though it need not be at the top-level) for data like this.

I'll note that the FHS states the following[2] in regards to /var:
"Everything that once went into /usr that is written to during system
operation (as opposed to installation and software maintenance) must
be in /var."

This exception seems to me to be clearly implying that "installation
and software maintenance" do not need to be in /var (and as CoreOS has
shown, there's value to keeping it somewhere else).

A further quote from the same section of the FHS suggests the use of
/usr/var, which is a location we are not currently using in the Fedora
Project, but seems like it would fit the requirements for both CoreOS
and traditional RPM Fedora. This same hierarchy could be used for
/var/log and /var/lib/libvirt/images as well.

[1] With the possible exception of enterprise logins, since SSSD
stores its offline cache in /var/lib/sss/db

This currently is in the FAQ.[1]
We recently discussed this in the EPEL Steering Committee Meeting, because
some clarification was requested.[2]
I am in the middle of writing a new page with the outcome of the meeting
[3]. I'll write a separate page, because this gets asked enough, that it
deserves it's own page.

Because I haven't gotten the new page written yet, follow the instructions
in the FAQ, and ask if things are not clear.
Two things to note.
1 - Name it web-assets-epel
That has changed from a recommended to a Must for packages that are just
supplying a missing -devel sub-package.
2 - Most -devel packages have a Requires: %{name}-%{version}-%{release}
It is suggested that you drop the -%{release} to save headache if you need
to redo the package.
If you do need it tied that closely to the release, let us know. We've
come up with ways to do that, so just ask.

Troy

Currently, ibus-cangjie is the default input method for zh_HK in
Fedora. ibus-cangjie is not actively maintained anymore upstream.
ibus-table and the cangjie tables in ibus-table-chinese are actively
maintained and can replace ibus-cangjie.

== Benefit to Fedora ==
A better input experience for users of the zh_HK locale.

== Scope ==
* Proposal owners:
The langtable package has data about default input methods. Change
this data. But the data in langtable is currently apparently not used
by gnome-initial setup. The list of default input methods used by
gnome-initial-setup us stored in

libgnome-desktop/default-input-sources.h

Currently there is the following default input method for zh_HK locale:

static DefaultInputSource default_input_sources[] =
{
   ...
   { "zh_HK","ibus", "cangjie" },
   ...
}

Here, `cangjie` would need to be replaced with `table:cangjie5`.

fedora-comps needs to be updated to install
`ibus-table-chinese-cangjie` by default.

== Upgrade/compatibility impact ==
Nothing should happen when upgrading from a previous version of
Fedora. If a user used ibus-cangjie before the upgrade, they will
still use it after the upgrade. This change proposal only changes the
default input method for zh_HK locale for new installs or new user
accounts.

== How To Test ==
Do a new installation of Fedora 30 in zh_HK (Chinese Hongkont) locale.
The package `ibus-table-chinese-cangjie` should be installed.
Log into Gnome. See what input method is suggested by default by
gnome-initial-setup.

== User Experience ==
Less buggy and better maintained cangjie input method.

== Dependencies ==
gnome-initial-setup

* Contingency mechanism: Leave the default input methods as they are
now and move the change to Fedora 37
* Contingency deadline: Fedora 36 Beta release

F36 Change: Malayalam Default Fonts Update (Self-Contained Change proposal)

2022-01-10 Thread Ben Cotton
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/MalayalamDefaultFontsUpdate

== Summary ==
This change will update existing default Malayalam fonts and also
rename to new upstream source, which brings improved text shaping,
better glyphs for readability, Unicode 13 support, Appstream data
amongst other improvements.

== Owner ==
* Name: [[User:Rajeeshknambiar |Rajeesh K V]], [[User:Pnemade| Parag Nemade]]
* Email: ,

== Detailed Description ==

Till Fedora 35, Meera (`smc-meera-fonts`) and Rachana
(`smc-rachana-fonts`) fonts were default sans-serif and serif fonts
for Malayalam script/language. From Fedora 36, these are obsolete by
Meera New (`rit-meera-new-fonts`) and RIT Rachana

== Benefit to Fedora ==

Enhance the experience of Fedora for Malayalam users by improving font

# AppStream metadata which provides preview of the font in software

# Notable differences with Noto {Sans,Serif} Malayalam fonts are the
‘reformed’ script which contains very less conjunct characters, while
all RIT fonts are ‘traditional’ script fonts. The ex-height and
em-size of RIT fonts are more suitable for reading/composing long
Malayalam text on web/print.

Huh, a new top-level directory is a pretty big hammer. Seems like it

[EPEL-devel] Guidelines for adding subpackages not shipped by RHEL

2022-01-10 Thread Petr Pisar
Hello,

I happened to hit a request for adding web-assets-devel binary package of
web-assets component to EPEL 9 (bug #2036086) while web-assets-filesystem
binary package is shipped in RHEL. I recall it is allowed, but ones need to
follow some rules which I cannot find now.

Current Packaging guide lines
 do not document
this particular case. The closest one is adding missing architectures (Limited
Arch Packages section).

Do you know the rules for adding the missing subpackages?

I remember that release number needs to be kept lower.
What about component (source package) name. Can I use reuse it, or do we need
to rename it to keep Koji happy in case it has imported CentOS builds?
I guess I should disable subpackages already shipped by RHEL.

I didn't see this in c9s. The last built ruby in c9s was built by

The ruby-mri binary has no deep DT_NEEDED dependencies which should

Just keep trying and it will eventually pass.

OK then, running:

while ! \fedpkg build --fail-fast; do sleep 5; done

I have stopped now, with 11th build running. You will eventually need
to rebuild ruby for https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Ruby_3.1
anyway.

Well, but I am afraid the failures are likely different then the
original one. Please see:

https://koschei.fedoraproject.org/package/ruby?collection=f36

All the buildroot changes seems to be related to FFI. Also scratch
builds are failing in some strange way:

https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/ruby/pull-request/106

I am not really sure what to blame.

Hello packagers,

I intent to rebuild the following packages with libffi 3.4 in Rawhide side tag

Thank you for helping with the rebuilds!

The previous version remains available as libffi13.1, so failures to build will
not result in uninstallable packages.

You can inspect some known failures:

https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/churchyard/libffi-3.4/package/jffi/
make: *** No rule to make target '-L/usr/lib64/../lib64', needed by
'/builddir/build/BUILD/jffi-jffi-1.3.4/build/jni/jffi/Array.o'.  Stop.

I don't know why this one fails. Passed in c9s with earlier jffi and libffi 3.4.

Rawhide did build successfully on 2021-08-22, but that was a while ago.

https://koschei.fedoraproject.org/package/jffi indicates this is libffi 3.4
related.

https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/churchyard/libffi-3.4/package/thunderbird/
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status

The logs don't contain any more information. This is a static linker failure
when building
libxul.so.

Rawhide did build successfully on 2021-12-15.

https://koschei.fedoraproject.org/package/thunderbird indicates this is not
related.

Not yet rebuilt packages:

$ repoquery -q --repo=koji --whatrequires libffi3.1 --source | pkgname
gambas3
hadolint
jffi
llvm
llvm10
llvm11
llvm12
llvm9.0
python2.7
python3.6
python3.7
ruby
thunderbird

All are known. jffi seems to be the only libffi-related failure.

I would like to second David Cantrell's suggestion.

For Fedora Server it seems to me essential to strictly follow FHS. And from an
"enterprise" perspective, it is essential that FHS indeed does not change every
week.

A /state directory is not included in FHS, sure. But at least it does not
blatantly violate existing and accepted regulations.

And the fact that rpm-ostree based installations have already made this change
is not a relevant argument for FHS based installations.

Best
Peter

This failed in the same place in two different builds in the test_ractor.rb

test case, and it crashes in 'ractor_select()' within 'rb_vm_exec()'.

This is odd that it should fail with the libffi update since this the
failure is in the
Ruby Ractor test, which I wouldn't expect to use any of the FFI APIs. It has
failed

twice though in the same place.

I didn't see this in c9s. The last built ruby in c9s was built by me and it
is 3.0.2-155,

where test_ractor.rb passes just fine built with libffi 3.4.

The ruby-mri binary has no deep DT_NEEDED dependencies which should need
libffi or other
libraries to be built in a particular order, but with dlopen you can get odd
ordering
issues that are only resolved after the SONAME bump is complete and rebuilds
completed

across dependent libraries.

I feel like I'm missing something, but rpminspect has been doing what
license-validate does for years now.  It's ready for SPDX expressions.
Results show up for Fedora builds in Zuul.  Or you can run it
locally.

Here is my motivation:

We are automating packing - hundred thousands libraries to be
automatically packaged. But some of them have restrictive license. For
that we need **simple** tool.

rpminspect is big beast for that. I learned that I can run

rpminspect-fedora-Fjson-Tlicense foo.src.rpm

But I need something which can evaluate just the string.

That's fair. I've tried to make rpminspect as simple as possible. It is just
a CLI tool you install and run. What you're trying to do is not out of scope
of rpminspect. I could add another CLI tool called licenseck that just checks
the License tags in a given spec file.

My main concern here is you have introduced another License tag parser that
produces different results and uses a different set of source data than other
tools. There is an ongoing project to both normalize and centralize the
License tag data. This is to replace the wiki as the source.

One of the difficult things with the Fedora abbreviations is that
tokens can have spaces in them.  For example, the Apache 2.0 license
in Fedora is called "ASL 2.0".  This makes it really hard to work with
in software.

Likewise, we have historically allowed full expressions through that
contain otherwise forbidden licenses.  For example, many Perl module
packages use the License tag "GPL+ or Artistic" so in a way that
entire expression is treated as a token.

This information is currently captured in this JSON file (not the
original author, but I make use of the file):

https://github.com/rpminspect/rpminspect-data-fedora/blob/master/licenses/fedora.json

rpminspect's license check uses this data to validate the License tag
in RPM headers based on the rules as they exist in the packaging
guidelines plus the assorted expressions we have historically allowed
through that would not otherwise validate.

*nod*

The string

 'GPL+ or Artistic or MIT'

evaluates license-validate as correct, while rpminspect results that as bad
license.

But this expression is not valid. It would be valid as

(GPL+ or Artistic) or MIT

This will break cloud-init, since it doesn't know how to configure
NetworkManager directly. It only knows how to configure netplan (which
isn't packaged in Fedora currently), ifcfg-rh, and ifupdown configuration files.
