Re: packaging of nix

2024-02-23 Thread Pratham Patel
Hi!

Apologies for such a late response! I didn't receive the reply in my mailbox
and noticed it yesterday night when I circled back here to see the state... :/

Trying to build it locally on an aarch64 board with your spec file, I already
noticed that `libcpuid-devel` is missing from the available packages on Fedora
for aarch64. Being a bit more familiar with the Determinate Systems' Nix
installer, there are a few problems with the setup too, which I will tend to,
but after getting Nix to build on RHEL 9.x and Fedora 39+, both on aarch64.

I'm actively interested in having Nix available in Fedora repos so there can be
one less shell script I need to run!

Since there is no git repository, I'm not sure where to send PRs to. In the
meantime, I will create a repo on GitHub as `thefossguy/nix-for-fedora`.

You now seem to have just built re2 for Rawhide without any of the
deps:

https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2024-daa3669e4d

that's not how you're supposed to do things, these days. You should
build re2 on a side tag and then get all the deps rebuilt on the same
side tag, then create a combined update. The update failed tests
because of this.

The best thing to do at this point would be to create a side tag, bump
re2 and do a new build on the side tag, then ask maintainers of
dependencies and/or provenpackagers to rebuild the dependencies on the
side tag.

It was a program for controlling Canon cameras that has been
retired.
Some group you have installed has that package listed in it.

Ah, this likely explains why neither "dnf repoquery" nor "dnf group
list" could find "multican".

  The comps
groups need to be cleaned out and that's just a warning.

Well, ... IMHO, most about comps and groups is in an embarrassing
unusable shape.

No. Well, sort of. As mentioned, those are packages that have been
removed from the distro, but are still listed in the comps groups. dnf
checks the installed groups for packages that need to be updated and
can't find these ones.

Yes, many times. :-) This kind of thing happens when a pointer to a
64-bit integer gets passed to something that expects a pointer to a
32-bit integer. In this case, src/rng/rng_helpers.c has a number of
variables named "dimension" that have type PyGSL_array_index_t. That
type has the same size as a pointer; i.e., it is a 32-bit integer on
32-bit systems and a 64-bit integer on 64-bit systems.

At various places in rng_helpers.c, a dimension variable is
initialized to 1, then PyArg_ParseTuple is called to parse an integer
into it. The type code "i" is given. Python thinks that means we
passed it a pointer to a 32-bit integer. On little endian systems,
that's okay as long as the integer to be parsed fits into a 32-bit
integer; we overwrite the 1. On big endian systems, however, we write
the parsed 32-bit integer into the most significant 32 bits of the 64
bit integer, leaving the 1 in the least significant bits. This leaves
the dimension variable holding a value like 42949672961 ==
0xa0001, when it should have held the value 10. The fix is to pass
"l" into PyArg_ParseTuple instead of "i".

I have added a patch for this to
https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/pygsl/pull-request/2, which (gentle
prod here) has now been open for 6 months. If you don't want all of
it, we can eject unwanted commits from the PR.

I'll open a PR upstream for this issue.

Regards,

I don't use sudo or my regular user is not in sudo users , sudo is
needed for others things like wheel group and always have been present
in Linux

I mean using sudo and can't login as root or root don't have password ,
like in Ubuntu model and if you are admin you do sudo for everything .

This xkcd is not new for me and made me think, I already stated my

pygsl tests fail on s390x

2024-02-23 Thread José Abílio Matos
https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=113947607

Most of the errors are like this
E numpy.core._exceptions._ArrayMemoryError: Unable to allocate 320. GiB
for an array with shape (42949672961,) and data type float64

I am surprised with the fact that the s390x builders do not have at least 320
GiB of RAM, they are clearly under-powered. ;-)

On a more serious, and boring, note does this warning rings a bell to anyone
who had a similar problem?

FWIW what is failing are the tests in x390x as they work for all other archs.

Best regards,

To add: sudo itself pre-dates Linux itself by around 11 years - sudo was
created closer to when su was created than to when the Linux kernel was
created.

sudo's config syntax is a little awkward, but it is a far superior
solution over su when it comes to security. sudo _can_ be configured
insecurely, but that's a function of who configures it and how, not the
tool itself. You could also make su insecure with bad configuration.

sudo has been part of the Red Hat/Fedora family since Red Hat Linux 7.0
https://archive.download.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/7.0/en/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS/
(2000-09) and had been in powertools since at least 5.2
https://archive.download.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/5.2/en/powertools/i386/
(1998-11). Both of those dates vastly predate Ubuntu. While they had been
part of Debian before that they were included in Powertools in 5 due to
requests for it being used on Unix systems which were being replaced with
Red Hat Linux. [sudo was already a preferred tool in various university and
corporate environments because it did allow for all kinds of policy
decisions which were easily updated versus the standard at that time to
make a chroot wrapper and control via group permissions. Many times these
wrappers were the most insecure thing on a system. ]

There have been holy wars over /usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin for as long
as I have been a systems administrator in the 1980's. Different schools of
thought have their world view of when/who/how people should have access to
it and it would be even split into which Unix you used because of what was
needed to act per system.

In the end, this choice tends to be deeply personal where each person
assumes the world should follow their model and then get increasingly angry
that is not the case. I have seen it create complete forks of an operating
system due to needing to compile in such paths in various tools.

2024-02-26 @ 17:00 UTC - Fedora 40 Blocker Review Meeting

2024-02-23 Thread Adam Williamson
# F40 Blocker Review meeting
# Date: 2024-02-26
# Time: 17:00 UTC
# Location:
https://matrix.to/#/#blocker-review:fedoraproject.org?web-instance[element.io]=chat.fedoraproject.org

Hi folks! It's time for another blocker review meeting. We have 7
proposed blockers and 4 proposed freeze exception for Beta, and 5
proposed blockers for Final.

The meeting will be on Matrix. Click the link above to join in a web
client - you can authenticate with your FAS account - or use a
dedicated client of your choosing.

I'll be on vacation on Monday, so Frantisek Zatloukal will be running
the meeting, thanks Franta!

If you have time this weekend, you can take a look at the proposed or
accepted blockers before the meeting - the full lists can be found
here: https://qa.fedoraproject.org/blockerbugs/ .

Remember, you can also now vote on bugs outside of review meetings! If
you look at the bug list in the blockerbugs app, you'll see links
labeled "Vote!" next to all proposed blockers and freeze exceptions.
Those links take you to tickets where you can vote.
https://pagure.io/fedora-qa/blocker-review has instructions on how
exactly you do it. We usually go through the tickets shortly before the
meeting and apply any clear votes, so the meeting will just cover bugs
where there wasn't a clear outcome in the ticket voting yet. **THIS
MEANS IF YOU VOTE NOW, THE MEETING WILL BE SHORTER!**

We'll be evaluating these bugs to see if they violate any of the
Release Criteria and warrant the blocking of a release if they're not
fixed. Information on the release criteria for F40 can be found on the
wiki [0].

For more information about the Blocker and Freeze exception process,
check out these links:
 - https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA:SOP_freeze_exception_bug_process

And for those of you who are curious how a Blocker Review Meeting
works - or how it's supposed to go and you want to run one - check out
the SOP on the wiki:

Have a good weekend and see you on Monday!

Not convinced, dnf repoquery can be used by any user.
I don't see any major problem but also I don't see any great
benefit, so I don't think we should change that, as it will be, most
likely, a lot of work to everyone

Introduction / unorphaning package request

2024-02-23 Thread Joshua Stone
Hello everyone,

I've been a Linux user since my friends showed me Ubuntu 9.04! That was a
lifesaver when I needed an OS with a functional office suite after my MS
Office 2007 license expired and Windows Vista was having stability issues.
After multi-booting Windows and Linux for several years, I had decided that
I no longer boot Windows enough to warrant the disk space, so I've been
running Linux exclusively for over a decade.

When I was first using Linux, I would distro hop between Ubuntu, Linux
Mint, and Fedora, finally before settling on Fedora right around the time
it switched to Wayland by default.

I think Fedora has been very beneficial for me because it's given me enough
of a background on RPM-based distros to have a career where I can use Linux
professionally. My current employment is at Red Hat so I spend a lot of
time packaging software.

I also spend time maintaining several apps on Flathub, and I'd like to
expand maintenance efforts to Fedora!

Earlier I filed a request for unorphaning a package:

https://pagure.io/releng/issue/11963

It would appear that there are several requirements I must fulfill,
especially finding a sponsor. If there's anyone who can help, then I'd
really appreciate it! I hope to be more involved with the Fedora community!

Thanks!

- Josh

We're not breaking backward compatibility. We would install a symlink
pointing sbin to bin, which ensures any absolute path usage of
binaries formerly in sbin will still work.

But /bin/sh is present and runnable when I try in /mnt/sysroot (the log shows

Anyone else hitting this?

Yes, someone else is, when installing in VirtualBox:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2244744

It's confusing, isn't it? Are you using VirtualBox?

I think the problem is that bash is getting installed before glibc,
presumably due to some kind of circular dep chain that rpm has to break
arbitrarily. I don't know how best to determine that though.

I too am getting the "kernel version list is not available" error when
a package listed in my kickstart is not available. I encountered this
when trying to install Fedora 39 directly on x86_64 hardware. My bug
was #2264240, but I recently concluded the problem was the same as
Orion's #2238045.

name it one , I'm not aware.

Fedora old school (or just me I don't know ) don't use sudo , sudo is a
bad idea that came from Ubuntu and turn computer much more insecure ,
since if a regular user is compromised the access to all computer is
much more easier .
And PATH at root user have sbin and PATH of regular user should not
have /sbin/

but checking we got this pearl in /etc/profile

pathmunge /usr/local/sbin

I did run `dnf system-upgrade` and it revealed no issues at all, not
even downgrades. I am excluding a bunch of packages from being installed
via exclude= in /etc/dnf/dnf.conf, though. These include hardware
enablement for hardware I can't possibly have on this particular
machine.

So, good job on F40, Fedora community!

Shouldn't sbin be removed from the path with this change?

The only reason normal users have sbin in the first place is because of the
convenience of tab completion with sudo.

When normal users got sbin, it was important that it was at the end of the
variable or it would break consolehelper. I’m not sure if consolehelper is
ever used anymore but its still part the repo.

Thank you very much, Zbigniew

Okay I have opened a crucial one:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2265552 (pandoc-cli),

which will actually replace the pandoc binary package.

With this it will simplify the pandoc package further, since this
package depends on the pandoc library!
