I haven't looked at it in a couple of years, but last I looked at it, the
packaging was awful, and the interdependencies between sub-packages made me
walk away in disgust. As somebody who spends the majority of my waking
hours these days dealing with SIP and telecommunications systems, I'd be
happy to donate an hour or two to see if we can improve things with regards
to SIP clients in Fedora.

Indeed... I'd hate to see mocha disappear. That being said, there's a
bunch of these other packages that can probably safely be retired -- I
pulled in a couple hundred NodeJS packages in my hard-headed attempt to get
NodeRED into Fedora for the IoT team a couple of years ago, but got bogged
down in dependency nightmares and ultimately gave up. Since then, I've
been busy with my job and grad school to really spend a lot of time
worrying about NodeJS packages in Fedora, since I'm not a NodeJS
developer. That being said, if there are packages like mocha that really
need to be maintained to keep the NodeJS ecosystem working in Fedora, I
could probably be persuaded to pick up a few more packages.

I'm going to disagree with you here, specifically with regards to the "I
don't care" piece. From my time in FESCo, and as the FPL before that -- I
can never remember a time when someone abstained because they didn't care.
I remember people abstaining because they didn't feel it was appropriate
for them to vote on their own ticket, or they felt uncomfortable for
whatever reason, but never simply because they didn't care.

Please remember that FESCo members can vote either "+1" or "0" or "-1" for
a particular change. I would think voting "0" would be more appropriate
for a "I don't care" vote. But I still don't see an "I don't care" vote as
a reason to abstain.

Kevin, your comments like this are not helpful, and not in keeping with our
mantra of being excellent to each other.

As you're well aware, there's a cooperative relationship between Fedora and
RHEL. Fedora serves as the upstream for RHEL, but that doesn't translate
into it being the alpha version of RHEL. This ELN effort, from what I've
read about it (I haven't been a Red Hat insider for a long time, so I don't
have any non-public details about it) is aimed at making it easier for RHEL
to take advantage of the work done in Fedora, and even be more open about
the development. I don't see how either of those are bad things, as long
as they don't pose a burden on Fedora developers. From the discussions on
this mailing list, it looks like the team running the initiative has taken
great pains to clarify that they don't want to put any undue burden on
Fedora developers.

So, whether your agree with the decision that FESCo made or not, please
don't leave sniping comments like this -- they're not constructive.

One of the things we should always strive for in Fedora is to assume
positive intent. In this situation, that would mean assuming it was an
accident, rather than ascribing it to anything else. We want Fedora to be a
welcoming place, and comments like this don't help.

Asterisk has very few dependencies on Python (just some contributed scripts

Intent to unretire libresample package, needs re-review

2019-10-09 Thread Jared K. Smith
I intend to unretire the "libresample" package in Fedora, now that I have
it building properly from source again. It needs a re-review, which I've
asked for at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1759928.

I will open a Rel-Eng ticket for unretirement once the package has been
re-reviewed.

What you don't seem to appreciate, based on your comments in this thread
and others over the past couple of months, is that Fedora is a fast-moving
distribution by default. That's (the distribution) Fedora's niche. Fedora
(the community) is also largely driven by volunteers, who each have their
own reasons for contributing to the project.

Finding the right balance of forward-leaning and features first, which
still focusing on usability is a hard problem to solve. The proverbial
pendulum does swing back and forth between "things are moving too quickly,
and things are broken because of it" and "things aren't moving quickly
enough" quite a bit. But to "stop doing projects", to use your words, is
not what Fedora is known for.

If I'm reading the comments right in the bugzilla report linked above, it
sounds like Lenovo is going to do the right thing and put out an update
BIOS for doing thermal management in the BIOS itself, rather than having
the OS control it. I realize that probably doesn't cover everyone's use
cases (or maybe not even older-model Lenovo laptops), but at least for me,
this sounds like a more sane approach than trying to guess/reverse engineer
what the OS is supposed to tell the hardware.

I think your comments went from just being an opinion to being over the
line when they assumed that everyone (except for maybe Gnome developers?)
agreed with your opinion. When you use phrases like "it just works for
everyone" or "Things everyone hates" (to use your exact words), it
marginalizes those who share a difference of opinion. While my own
opinions on many topics don't necessarily match up with those of others in
the Fedora community, I would hope that my comments and opinions would
never make anyone else feel uncomfortable or unwelcome. There is plenty of
room in Fedora for differences of opinion, as long as we try to keep a high
level of respect and dignity for those with different views.

Please be a bit more thoughtful in the words you use to express your
opinions.

Be bold and just update the page... it's a wiki, so it keeps a change
history, and if someone else has a problem with what you wrote, they can
either update it or roll back the changes. You shouldn't ever feel like
you have to ask permission or have the details 100% correct before updating
something on the wiki.

One of the frustrating things with NodeJS packaging in Fedora is that
because of the crazy number of dependencies between NodeJS packages, a
simple version bump in one package could cause a whole cascade of other
packages that need to be updated to newer versions to support that
dependency here.

The right thing to do in this case is to look at each of those packages,
find anything that's dependent upon those packages, and make sure each one
will still work with the newer version of the package. It's tiresome,
thankless work -- and you often end up getting three or four levels down
the dependency tree before realizing things aren't going to work -- which
is why I've stepped away from packaging up new NodeJS packages for a
while...

I'm torn on this one... I think the release announcement should be done
before the release (with time to properly review it, etc.). That being
said, I'm afraid that all this proposal will do is shift the last-minute
scramble to the Go/No-Go meeting itself. I'd rather look for a solution
that fundamentally makes the situation better, rather than just shifting
the timing. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to come up with a better

I'm in agreement here -- they seem like very reasonable criteria. As for
the printer drivers, I think that the Postscript ought to be in the list,
and perhaps something along the lines of HP LaserJet 4, as there are lots
and lots and lots of printers that try to stay compatible with that. I'd
also love to see "Print to PDF" added to that list, as I find myself using
that more and more as time goes on.

License update for nodejs-qunitjs package

2018-07-31 Thread Jared K. Smith
I updated the version of nodejs-qunitjs in Rawhide today, and it's license
has changed from "MIT and ASL 2.0" to "MIT". Previously, the entire
package was under the MIT license, with the exception of the src/diff.js
file, which was under the ASL 2.0 license. That file has since been
removed, and the entire package is now under the MIT license.

I have reviewed the first twenty or so -- everything down to (and
including) golang-github-shurcool-markdownfmt. I probably won't have a
chance to work on these over the weekend, but I'll try to do more reviews
early next week.

Just another gentle ping -- do we have any more information here that can

I'm going to respectfully disagree here. Strong and resilient communities
learn to communicate well, and this communication helps to avoid problems,
conflicts, and resentment. Even if we didn't have this rule, it would be
common courtesy to announce any change that causes others to have to do
work, even if it's only for a few users.

I'll paraphrase a mantra that I learned from Greg DeKoenigsberg, which says
that "In communities, it's okay to be disappointed, but it's not okay to be
surprised." I personally feel that we'd be a stronger community if we all
focused a bit more on the principle of "least surprise".

No objections from me. I wasn't able to get to one internal site, but it
helped encourage our NOC to update the SSL settings on that particular
internal site. That being said, it might be helpful to document how to
upgrade a typical Apache configuration with SSL to support Diffie-Hellman
with 1024-bit parameters.

corruption issues on 32-bit ARM as well?

Due to the fact that you're having segfaults in command-line programs as
well, I'm tempted to say you've got a bigger (hardware?) problem on your

I'm actively working on fixing up Asterisk -- it took a while to get
systemd support back into dahdi-tools and get it unorphaned. Now, I'm
running into a problem where Asterisk won't build on s390x. See
https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=20012396. That, in
turn, is probably going to mean pulling in a newer version of pjproject,
which has it's own issues on non x86_64 arches (see
https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=20014157).

I'm hoping to get this all sorted out in the next few days.

I won't be able to make today's meeting, and since we haven't had a quorum
for the last two weeks, we don't have a volunteer to run today's meeting.
I'll vote in the tickets from last week's agenda.

The Fossology project (fossology.org) uses two different license scanners
that also do much more than a glorified grep -- check out
http://archive15.fossology.org/projects/fossology/wiki/Nomos and
http://archive15.fossology.org/projects/fossology/wiki/Monk for more
details.

I've found them to be much better than anything else I've seen in the open
source space.

I'm confused by your reluctance to use a side-tag here -- it's really not a
hassle at all to use, and it would really help those of us who regularly
use Rawhide. Would you be willing to at least try it for a couple of
iterations and see how it goes?

Not to put too fine a point on it, but I see SELinux like a seat-belt in a
car. Yes, you can point out some cases where someone would have been safer
*not* wearing a seat-belt, or would have been less inconvenienced. But the
benefits vastly outweigh the inconvenience. So yes, SELinux does cause the
occasional problem in development -- but I'd much rather have slightly more
complicated development if it means a safer experience for Fedora users.
