Try first CAT rate 4800bps. I remember, that 817 or 857D work better
with lower rate (RigCAT) and for me this is default for both rig.

My Fldigi settings: Retry interval 30ms, Commands interval 70ms
FT857D with DigiKeyer and FT-817 with SignaLink-1+

[digitalradio] Interface and computer problems

I recently purchased a Signalink USB interface which works fine all

interface that didn't use a USB port bit rather the computer sound
card. The rig is 746 pro connected via the data jack. Any one else
have any ideas before I have the computer checked ?

Mike,

Have you switched to digital mode on the 746Pro? You need to hold in the SSB
button for two seconds until a D appears on the display. This activates
the data jack and disables the microphone.

2009-02-15 Thread Vojtech Bubnik
In a simple shoot out between olivia 250 x8 and msfk16 , olivia
stopped decoding whilst mfsk was still at 100% ... thought that was
 not supposed to happen ?

Hi Graham.

I am certainly not surprised and it confirms my Gaussian noise tests.
Olivia trades sensitivity for automatic tuning. MFSK16's convolution
coding provides for high sensitivity, but does not give sharp enough
indicator, whether the data is valid. Basically the Hammond distance
of the code is too low to give reliable indicator. Olivia uses Welsh
block coding, which provides good data validity indicator, but has not
as high coding gain as convolution codes.

For explanation of coding gain, see the excellent article from g3ruh
http://www.amsat.org/amsat/articles/g3ruh/105.html

I believe the perfect weak signal mode for HAM radio is yet to be
designed with easy tuning of Olivia and high sensitivity of MFSK16,
combining both convolution and block codes. Maybe overlying MFSK16
with Reed-Solomon block code and running multiple MFSK16 decoders with
half tone spacing will do the trick.

Re: [digitalradio] The perfect mode

2009-02-15 Thread Jose A. Amador

That's not me !

I wanted to stress the point that we have two seemingly different needs:
one for keyboarding, which is OK with a smaller character set, and a
full 8 bit word mode for data, that could be used instead of the old
packet modems. As usual, each one might carry a different name or
designation.

I should do my homework and find some time to read the specs of the
existent modes and identify which are the already 8 bit capable ones...
so far I have not... I might be speaking a bit off base without this
certainty.

PTT. However when using FL-Digi , frequency display corresponds with
the Icom 746 but the T/R button fails to place the Icom in to transmit

[digitalradio] Re: FLDIGI

2009-02-15 Thread rich

There was a (oops) in some of the rig xml files on the fldigi website
at the time of the 3.10 release. It was corrected quickly but you may
have a rig.xml that was missing the port/port tags. I have been
using Fldigi with FT857D 897D both without a problem. Try the
FT857D.xml from Dave's website.

If running Linux, be sure to use either Hamlib 1.2.7 or compile a
snapshot from the CVN as Hamlib 1.2.8 wouldn't work right for me until
some issues were worked out.

2009-02-15 Thread Andrew O'Brien
Still no go. I am talking him throught this via Skype, so it is not
easy.

He placed the Icom 746 Pro xml file in the FLDIGI.FILES/RIGS path,
He selected RIGCAT in FLDIGI CONFIGURE area and selected USE
RIGCAT. He saved and re-booted. When rebooted, FLDIGI says no
RigCAT above the frequency read out, there is no rig control.

He has baud rate set to same baud rate his rig 19200, and comm port
selected is comm 5, same one he previously had some rig control (but
no PTT) when using HAMLIB.

He is not sure which setting for PTT to use, RTS or DTR, he tried
both, no control.

Is Use PTT via Cat Command black (i.e. checked)?

DTR and RTS are not needed when using CAT for PTT.

Is he getting a frequency readout of the IC-746pro on fldigi?

Yes, get the 746Pro file from here:

Put the file in the Rigs folder in fldigi.files.

Set the baud rate, comport, and check PTT via Cat Command.

When using RIGCAT with an Icom 746P, should we be using a xml for
for
 that rig ?

OK, I see he has no rig control. That is why he has no PTT. Must be
a bad
setting in the Microham keyer. Once he gets rig control, he will
have PTT by
 CAT command, I think.

I use the IC-746pro also, but with the Radio Shack scanner USB
programming
cable. With this interface, there is no problem.

Andy, here you say he has frequency display, but now you say he does not.

According to the manual, he has to CREATE virtual ports. I guess you do this
and then configure fldigi to use the port of your choice, but it must not be
a port already in use.

When the ports are created, I think fldigi will detect them, so restart
fldigi and then choose the port.

I am trying to help a friend set-up FLDIGI on his new laptop using his
Microham Digikeyer. Using the device router for the digikeyer (control
port 5 and PTT port 6) the digikeyer PTT test button does toggle the
PTT. However when using FL-Digi , frequency display corresponds with
the Icom 746 but the T/R button fails to place the Icom in to transmit
mode. Any ideas ? When configuring FL-DIGI, we did try to use HAMLIB
and PTT via CAT control, but that did not produce a PTT wither.

Andy,

The Microham manual says you must disable autobaud in any ICOM used with the
router. Make sure it is disabled and either 9600 baud or 19200 baud is
selected in the ICOM.

You must get frequency control working before you can use PTT by CAT.

Read the manual carefully. You must specailly configure Microham to work
with each radio and each application.

Download the manual here:

Skip, thanks again.

I am familar with Microham and its device router, my friend has that
installed and working correctly. The Icom and the digikeyer can
communicate without problems. It is when we try to set up FLDIGI
that the problems begin. Using hamlib we can get frequency read out
but no PTT. When we try rigCAT we get neither, and NO CAT is
displayed in FLDIGI just above the frequency readout.

We will work on it some more tomorrow night
