[digitalradio] Re: Techs on HF digital

2009-12-26 Thread W8RIT
I'd like to say that I can't agree with Danny's comments any more.
I compare it to this:
Imagine a DX station @ one end of a football field with the rest of us trying
to work him at the other end by yelling our callsigns. The DX is able to able
to pick out a callsign and work them. Suddenly, one guy shows up with a
bullhorn. Then quickly others follow suit. After awhile 9 out of 10 of us use
amps. Guess what, most are back on the same level again and having just as much
time in their perceived need to bust the pileup in the first call.
First does this follow with using the minimum amount of power necessary to
carry on communications?? I think not, everyone was able to do it without a
bullhorn. I've heard arguments from others that feel differently that it was
necessary...they were able to get thru on the 1st call weren't they??
I've worked more than 180 DXCC entities...all on 100W or less with simple wire
antennas. It can be done...no you won't always bust the pileup the first time,
or get a 59+20 over signal report. There is a time and a place for using an
amp. It won't help you talk any farther if propagation will not support the
distance.
I think more needs to be done about when and when not to use an amp.
Digital modes in RF power have an advantage over SSB, generally you need less
RF power. Use it, find other methods to making contacts. Improve your antenna
is one that comes to mind first. There are other ways like improving your
communications skills, or equipment like filtering. Then learn when you should
use an amp, or when it isn't necessary.
In comparison, (as I'm sure many of you know, but there may be some who don't),
if you were to increase your RF power from 100W to 400W, that's 6dB1
S-unit, in many cases is that going to break the bank on making the contact or
not? I don't think so, not unless you're rising above the receiving stations
noise level.
I know of some hams that as soon as they turn on the rigs, the amplifier goes
on. I hear hams that since they have their RF gain turned up they can't hear
another station unless he's 20 over since they want perfect armchair static
free copy.
Again, especially with digital modes, 100W or more is not always necessary. My
1st PSK31 contact was to New Zealand w/ 5W.

I do not understand the instance of 200 or more watts. Most gear made in the

to that, or lower, to avoid pushing everyone into thinking they need an amp
for digital modes. It becomes a rat race, with the biggest rat wanting the
highest power, and then still leaving off those who have neither the money,
nor the QTH where an amp could be use . Level the playing field for these
guys and dont encourage them to use more power than necessary to make a QSO.

I believe the power limit and frequencies HF use by Tech licensed

I've been running the IC-7200 for several months now and love it. The twin
pass band filter and narrow filters work great and allow me to block out
everything above and below the desired signal on the waterfal.

The rig is simple to use but has a lot of great features. It's build like a
tank and you can even take it in the field on a rainy day and not worry about
getting it wet. It's also full duty cycle so I never have to worry about
running more than 50w on digital (which I seldom do with the exception of MT63
and Olivia if conditions are really poor). Even at a high duty cycle, the rig
never gets very hot to the touch. THe front firing speaker is another thing I
like for field ops under noisy conditions but here in the shack I have a good
bookshelf speaker plugged in.

I can't say much bad about the rig other than I wish it had the standard 6 pin
din connector. It has the 13 pin Icom jack for data but also has a USB
connector.

The last time I looked it's $900 on AES.

Be forewarned, though... no 2m/70cm, no auto tuner and no FM. It's strictly
160-6 SSB, AM, CW, RTTY.

I have the rig paired with the Signalink USB and an LDG Z-11 Pro tuner to
either my G5RV or 66' doublet

I have one of those and I like it for many reasons, but it's not a very
good rig for digital modes. Some issues that come to mind:

  * DSP is at the audio stage, useless for digital.

  * Narrow IF filters (300 and 500 Hz) are extra. It can be frustrating
to operate on HF without one of these.

  * TCXO is extra (but standard with the FT-897D, IIRC).

  * Minimum tuning step is 10Hz.

  * Much CAT functionality is undocumented by Yaesu, though HB9DRV
and co. must have discovered all of it by now.

  * Reference oscillator is mounted behind the rear vent/heatsink and is
therefore in the draft of air from the cooling fans. Fans always
activate on transmit so you will drift, even for short transmissions
and with the TCXO installed, which is most annoying on VHF/UHF.
Can't blame Yaesu much about this though, it's a small rig.

IMHO not worth considering for digital modes unless you _must_ have HF,
2m and 70cm in a compact radio. But then something like the IC-7000 is
much better for that. And if you only want HF you have many more
options.

I'm all for a good digital mode rag-chew...but allow me to be the Grinch on
Boxing Day and gripe about digital ops that take FOREVER to sign-off when
working DXpeditions and the like. Today when trying to work a needed entity ,

got through were sending such none sense as how many QSO's they had had in the
particular digital mode and the exact time and date they had logged the QSO.
Do we really need to know when you LOGGED the station you were JUST working?

I did work the DX, but I can complain too, right ?

You are not the first one to notice that so many digital ops seem
especially windy when it comes to any sort of contact. Even during a
normal rag chew I can't say I really care what version of OS they use,
whether or not they built their own PC, etc. AS you say all this sort of
stuff is tolerable in a regular QSO but really aggravating if you're
waiting for a tasty DX station for an area you need.

Maybe if we took away the macro function? :-)

Merry Christmas and 73 to all,
