Re: [IxDA Discuss] Green and not: ON and off

2007-10-13 Thread Jim Drew
I've had that problem recently with alarm clocks. My old one with
the red LEDs died, so I had to go shopping for a new one. I couldn't
get one like the previous one, and I went through *three* that were
too bright to sleep facing the clock (which is the only side I can
regularly fall asleep on), because they had glowing screens even when
put on dim. The first one got returned, the second became a new
clock for the bathroom, and I finally gave up and lost an hour or
more of sleep a night for a couple weeks until I managed to get used
to it.

Technological progress positively sucks some times. I'm sure the
glowing screens are touted as a feature, too. Rrrr.

be better to make it very clear what the channel is and use some sort
of hardware indicator other than light to indicate volume that is
easily understandable from a distance. That or put a dimmer or off
switch on the lights for nighttime use. (It's also the case on the
one in my son's room, the light's woken him a couple of times--it's
the brightest thing in the room. A glowing green something. Who's
gonna want to sleep when they can examine that?)

Re: [IxDA Discuss] IxD Managers (was: d schools)

2007-10-13 Thread Kontra
[There is a] common perception that a sales guy can sell
*anything*, be it cars or jeans or computerware. This view holds that
the domain of business is not determinant, the process is. You learn
the process (at business school), you're good to go.

As the inadequacy of this approach is exposed we now have another
trend: inject the sales guy with some appreciation of the domain,
surely now he can do even better. Welcome to 'design thinking,' the
finishing school for the Steve Jobs wannabes out there, if you will.

I explore this tension further at:

The new managerial class: cure for design?

Re: [IxDA Discuss] tangible interaction

2007-10-13 Thread Dan Saffer
When you find interesting companies working in this space (or
products) and they are working with touchscreen or interactive
surfaces, please add them to the Interactive Gestures wiki!

I started a list, but it is very incomplete.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] tangible interaction

2007-10-13 Thread Jeff Howard
Hi David,

In terms of institutions, The Tangible Media group led by Hiroshi
Ishii of the MIT Media Lab is probably at the top of the list. Their
work in tangible computing has a long history.

http://tangible.media.mit.edu/

For plenty of examples (including MetaDESK and phicons from MIT), two
of the best books to read are:

Where the Action Is: The Foundation of Embodied Interaction
by Paul Dourish

Everyware: The Dawning Age of Ubiquitous Computing
by Adam Greenfield

Tangible interaction is still a niche and not many consultancies are
focusing on it exclusively but a couple worth checking out include:

ThingM
http://thingm.com/

Schulze and Webb
http://schulzeandwebb.com/

See also:
http://nearfield.org/

Two companies that are providing frameworks for experimentation in
tangible interaction (via physical computing) are:

Tinker.it
http://tinker.it/

Phidgets Inc.
http://www.phidgets.com/

Finally, check out the presentations from Sketching in Hardware 2007.
It's a who's who of the people working on the front lines. Camille
Moussette's presentation on haptic interaction is especially good.
