Re: [IxDA Discuss] IxDA SF Presents When UX Research is Evil
Although I won't be able to make it, one thing I would (if I could make it) like to hear discussed is the issue of allowing users who don't otherwise struggle with using something to hold misperceptions about how that something works, and when that's appropriate or not appropriate. I tried to explain what I mean on my blog, but as I thought about this problem myself my conclusion was that if the cost of misperception is low, then allowing misperception may be appropriate, while if the cost of misperception is high, then allowing misperception is inappropriate. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [IxDA Discuss] [EVENT] IxDA NYC: Tues May 12 - Cindy Chastain on Experience Themes
RSVP http://tinyurl.com/ixdanyc-may09 IxDA NYC invites you to our May event: CINDY CHASTAIN speaking on Experience Themes: An Element of Story Applied to Design As designers we too often neglect to define a common vision, or coordinating force, behind the scope of what we’re designing, making or building. Without some means of unifying our efforts we can easily end up with a product or service that falls short of its potential of delivering an optimal user experience. One path to holistic coordination is to employ the concept of themes as used by fiction writers and filmmakers. For storytellers, themes are used as a compass, a means for examining every element in the story for its possible implication with regard to theme. For readers, themes offer an cognitive and emotional response to the story that is often much deeper and more memorable than details of plot. In experience design, themes can be used to pattern and unify product solutions as well as a means of unifying teams, assisting in the work of defining strategy and helping to design for the intangible pleasure, emotion and meaning in experience. By aiming to capture the value and focus of the experience we intend to deliver to users, themes guide us in the design process and, by extension, strengthen the impact and meaning of that experience. Please join us for a presentation about how experience themes were developed in the context of an interactive agency. The talk will delve into the notion of themes as they relate to user experience as well as discuss how they can be generated by a team and then used in the design process. WHEN Tuesday evening, May 12, 2009 6:30 - 7:00 networking and refreshments 7:00 - 8:00 presentation 8:00 - 8:30 QA and discussion The event is free of charge. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Need for and Contents of Left Navigation
Thanks, John - First, the 'mega-menu' usage for us is only up in that very top-area of links on the pages, e.g., Shop or North America . For the main/global navigation (red), we're just using short link lists as drop-downs. I will keep the 'mega' option on the table longer-term as I push to re-approach how we're organizing and allowing access to information. And yes, you're correct about us not showing an active state: something that was either overlooked or deliberately done (this project was well underway before I came on board). I've also noted to my team that the 'tabs' themselves are not functionally clickable; that is, you can click, but you no go nowheere :( (VP says he likes it this way to 'force the user' to find a quicker path to destination... don't get me started.) I completely agree with the red issue, and we're slowly changing that to a soft blue as we launch updates/new projects. So, thanks for the input! It really helps me to feel I'm not alone in much of my thinking. I may have said earlier that I'm the sole UI/UX/IA/IxD person on our global web team. :-/ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Your mission, as our fourth team member and first person focused on IA and writing, will be to figure out how to communicate this new content category to users and match users with specific content. You will… • Define “X”’s boundaries and characteristics by sorting through examples of “X” • Create and test language for communicating about “X,” including: What should we call “X”? • Design product iterations, producing site maps, wireframes, behavior documents, etc. • Work with our IxD/ visual design-focused UX designer to QA and improve each others’ iterations • Write descriptors for specific content. Establish a pattern, develop guidelines, outsource • Use language to persuade users to interact with our product and content You’ll need… Experience with Websites • Taking functional requirements and producing UI specifications ready for engineering • Demonstrated strength with information architecture, e.g., • • Auditing content, inferring patterns, and defining relationships • • Designing devices for the user to find content, including: • • • Static devices, e.g., site maps, navigation, labels • • • Dynamic devices, e.g., search, collaborative tagging, recommender systems • Demonstrated strength with writing- both to explain and persuade Attitude • A passion for finding patterns… • … and the patience to sift through massive quantities of data in search of those patterns • A love of language and words • The empathy to see your work through the eyes of our users… • … and the inclination to seek inspiration from, and test ideas with, users Other • A portfolio that demonstrates your experience • Desire to work in an agile startup environment • Willingness to work with us in Seattle The work will be hard. The challenge will push your skills to the limit. We may make a lot of money… but we may crash and burn. Join Angry Lapdog Productions. Change how the world understands the Web. [IxDA Discuss] Dealing with Table width beyond a defined area
Hi all, I have an issue where I need to display a dynamic/custom results table. The display results can go way beyond 1024 thus creating an horizontal scroll at that resolution and even beyond. This is because when generating the results/report, there are multiple options for columns - anywhere from 5-25, many with varying width based on dynamic content filling them. This table would then dynamically generate a PDF, HTML, or Excel file. There are options for the user to select what columns they want generated, but mast seem to choose all. (eg): property name | address | city | id number | bill type | 2006 | 2007 | 2008 | 2009 | difference | % change | . (up to 25 across) Results are then compared and sortable per column I would really like to elliminate the horizontal scroll if possible, I have a few thoughts, but would be glad to hear if anyone has been faced with this. Or, if there are any examples to view. BTW - This is a secure online application Thanks. Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Industry survey: Your help needed!
Hello IxDA members! [Apologies again for cross-posting!] If you missed it before, EightShapes is conducting an industry-wide survey on documentation practices. The survey is 25 questions, 20 minutes long, and by completing it you get a chance to win a book! We'll publish results later this summer. (If you had trouble before, please try again. Issues have been ironed out!) This is my last reminder on this mailing list. Sorry for the intrusion. Thanks, -- Dan On Wed, Apr 8, 2009 at 7:58 AM, Dan Brown brownor...@gmail.com wrote: [Apologies for the cross-posting!] EightShapes is conducting a survey, and if you participate you could win a book! *Please find the survey here:* *http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=yQN15syZwN0j2Tw4fE1vUA_3d_3d* We're giving away two copies each of Communicating Design by Dan Brown and Modular Web Design by Nathan Curtis. You could win one, if you give us 20 minutes of your time to complete a survey. The survey is about documentation. Our industry needs a better understanding of the many documents produced by designers. Communicating our design is a crucial part of our work, and yet no industry standards have emerged. When employed effectively, deliverables inject accountability, predictability, and traceability into our process. And yet documentation sometimes comes under fire when people don't feel like they're spending enough time doing design or aren't proficient enough to produce good documentation fast. The purpose of this survey is to paint a picture of documentation's role in our work, of our favorite tools, and of how we use time-saving techniques. The survey asks questions about your role, your design process, and the kinds of artifacts you create. It's *25 multiple-choice questions and takes about 20 minutes to complete*. Though we've beta-tested the survey, there's probably a few things wrong with it. Your patience with its shortcomings is greatly appreciated. *Please find the survey here:* *http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=yQN15syZwN0j2Tw4fE1vUA_3d_3d* * * EightShapes will publish the results of the survey later this year. -- Dan Brown, Principal • (301) 801-4850 EightShapes, LLC • eightshapes.com Also at: communicatingdesign.com • greenonions.com -- Dan Brown, Principal • (301) 801-4850 EightShapes, LLC • eightshapes.com Also at: communicatingdesign.com • greenonions.com -- Dan Brown, Principal • (301) 801-4850 EightShapes, LLC • eightshapes.com Also at: communicatingdesign.com • greenonions.com Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Who codes your production HTML/CSS/JS?
I don't work on much web stuff, so I'll jump in with this to stir the pot: I get a professional to write code for me. Embedded interfaces are generally more difficult for the layman to produce, but also, I want someone who knows code in and out to write code. ESPECIALLY production code. Always thought it strange that Google wanted IxDs to code. Maybe if you're just doing a simple web site, the designer and coder can be one, but then, those jobs aren't really the core of IxD anyway. If I was limited to what I could code (even using toolkits like Flex, et al.) my interactions would be pedestrian, unimaginative, and necessarily limited by my knowing I had to deliver it in the end. And, finally, I work at a consultancy and ownership over the code by my client is the single biggest contributor to the success of the end-product I've seen in my 15 years. Hands down. So this might be moot for in-house design/development. My $.02, Gretchen Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Who codes your production HTML/CSS/JS?
Always thought it strange that Google wanted IxDs to code. The IxDs in a sense are writing the psuedocodehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudocodejust like a tester writes bugs hopefully in a format that can quickly be transposed into the expected result. I think if you have to overly reformat either roles deliverable to make working sense the role is expendable and could be done by the receiving party just as well. 1 cent Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! [IxDA Discuss] How do you pitch UCD process (or design thinking)?
Hi all, I am a graduate student at Stanford doing a course project for a design consultancy startup. We are trying to understand how to effectively promote the user centered design process (or the buzzword design thinking) to potentially unaware clients. During my internship at Google as a user experience researcher, I recall we used different methods to accomplish a similar goal, such as inviting engineers and PMs to the usability lab observation room, designing and promoting posters and brochures about user personas, and having sessions for engineers and users to have conversation face-to-face. Also we think that IDEO gave a nice example by their deep dive TV show. So, we would be interested in hearing more examples, ideas, and stories from you. How do you tell people what you are doing everyday as UX designer/researcher? How do you convince engineers/PMs/stakeholders/clients that the user-centered design is the right way to go? They are very important to us as we are in our observation and understanding stage. Thanks a lot for your time, and we hope to learn from your experience! That's really insensitive. It was only 7.5 yrs ago. Think of all of NYCers, millions of them, having a little bit of PTSD. It scared me too, just watching the footage on the news.
