[IxDA Discuss] User cookie authentication vs. Security

2010-01-06 Thread Devin A . Brown
Hi,

I work for a very well-known publishing / corporate site that
attracts a high number of C-level global visitors. Our Security IT
department has has asked us to change our login procedures to
auto-log out user after 30 minutes (like a bank) as opposed to never
auto-expiring a login authentication cookie.

Unlike other online publications, we require a free one-tine login to
view 95% of the article after a preview snippet And we have a
high number of repeat visitors to our web site.

1) As anyone experienced the removing auto authentication and its
result to usability on website?

2) Are there any studies out there that talk to the balance of cookie
authentication vs. logging in every time?

Devin

[IxDA Discuss] JOB: Front-end Engineer with UX Sensibility at SocialFeet in New York, NY

2010-01-06 Thread Michael Weiksner
SocialFeet.com is a seed-funded startup in NYC that helps online
retailers drive sales through social networks. Our beta product
(called EchoSales) prompts people to share their purchases at
checkout to Facebook and Twitter. Good bye, interruptive
advertising…hello, product referrals!

As we expand sharing to reviews, ratings, wish lists and more,
SocialFeet seeks an exceptional engineer to lead our front-end
development. We require expertise in javascript, css, html, jquery,
cross-browser compatibility, etc. Beyond these standard web tech
requirements, though, we have middleware challenges: API design,
compatibility across publishing frameworks, creating and maintaining
a library of reusable widget code. We develop robust and maintainable
code through prototyping, rapid deployment and refactoring. In short,
we require not just an html jockey but a real engineer with UX
sensibility.

The founding team consists of three previously successful
entrepreneurs and technologists. For our part, we will do great core
engineering, product and business development. To apply to join us,
send us your resume, links to past work, and a cover note. Please
tell us why you think that there is a good fit!

Requirements:

* 4-6 years of experience creating slick, fast, and engaging web
apps
* Experience in Javascript frameworks (MooTools, prototype,
scriptaculous, jquery) unobtrusive javascript techniques: please
share your past work with us!
* Extra-credit: Flex or other data analytics visualization
frameworks; lean startup experience
* Be a self-starter; play well with others; have a get-it-done
mindset; focus on output, not input;

Benefits:

* Join as a key player on a small, ambitious team
* Set the standard pattern for sharing on engaging web sites
* Gain experience designing for the entire gamut of Social Media
Applications (Facebook, Twitter, Open Social, OAuth, etc)
* Join a hungry promising startup which offers enough cash to
eat (and drink) and generous equity compensation

To apply, go here (preferred):

Thanks Weixi. Jeff and Nancy for your replies. We were leaning towards
going with collapsible/tree type navigation over flyouts for the

Re: [IxDA Discuss] User cookie authentication vs. Security

2010-01-06 Thread Brian Mclaughlin
As I am sure you are aware, there are different levels of any of
saving info.
Does the login screen need to be blank when a person is logged out
(either by choice or by system) or can there be trace information
left?

Example...
When returning to the login page:
- the person sees their name and password pre-populated
- the person sees their name pre-populated but no password
- the person sees 2 blank input areas

I do not have have any study info on any of these scenarios ...which
is what you are asking for... but what is allowed to remain on the
login area may play a part in all of this.

Devin,

It's about the experience you want your users to have. If you want
it to be smooth and happy - and for people to continue to return to
the site - keeping the cookie authentication is the way to go. When
people are logged out automatically, it takes more effort, which
presents an obstacle to doing something that is optional to them, and
they may not ever come back. This may be the desired outcome. That is,
it may be that your company wants to get more people to commit or go
away.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] User cookie authentication vs. Security

2010-01-06 Thread Greg Knaddison

I think the right answer here will depend on some more details about
the site. Banks kick people off after 30 minutes because of the high
exposure associated with a session sticking around after the person
has left the computer: someone might steal their money. What
operations (if any) are possible on your site that reach the
importance of losing money?

If you can come up with a list of those actions that cause so much
concern to the Security IT folks then you can propose an alternative:
require users to re-authenticate if it's been more than 30 minutes
since they logged in and they are trying to do one of those
operations. In this hybrid approach your users will still be able to
easily access the articles you want them to read and yet the really
important operations will be protected. Your users may even thank you
for adding this security enhancement because it shows you care about
their assets.

If there aren't any really important operations that your visitors
take on your site then this sounds like a typical corporate top-down
mandate-for-mandate's-sake. And the best way I know to defeat those is
to get an ally high in the company to see your side of the story who
can fight against it ;)

Regards,
Greg

[IxDA Discuss] [Plug] IxDA Discount to Search Patterns Webinar (with free book)

2010-01-06 Thread Jared Spool

Hi Everyone,

With the recent discussion of patterns for results pagination (thanks
Paul Sherman!), I wanted to make sure everyone knew about our upcoming
UIE Virtual Seminar on the subject.

WHAT: Leveraging Search Discovery Patterns For Great Online
Experiences

WHO: Peter Morville Mark Burrell
WHEN: Tuesday, January 12, 1:30pm ET
WHERE: 90-minute online webinar
COST: $129 per connection (pile everyone into a conference room)
WEB SITE: http://www.uie.com/events/virtual_seminars/search_patterns/

I'm very excited that Peter Morville and Mark Burrell are presenting
for us next week. If you're working on anything related to search, you
definitely want to catch this session.

Two special things to note about this seminar:

First, Peter has a new O'Reilly book coming out called, appropriately
enough, Search Patterns. I've seen an early draft of the book and
can't wait to get my copy. (In fact, I'll be getting multiple copies
because I have certain clients that NEED to read this book.)

Thank to the great folks at Endeca, you'll get a free copy of the book
by signing up for the seminar. As soon as it's off the press, the
Endeca folks will send you your copy.

Second, as an IxDA reader, you can use the promotion code IXDA (we're
nothing if not clever!) to get lifetime access to the seminar's
recording for your entire organization. This means, in addition to
watching it live, you can make sure everyone on your team sees it.

You can find out more and register here:
 http://www.uie.com/events/virtual_seminars/search_patterns/

See you there (virtually),

Jared

[IxDA Discuss] Expression/Sketchflow workshops in Portland or Seattle?

[IxDA Discuss] How do you sell UX?

2010-01-06 Thread Justin Davis
For those out there who work as freelancers or standalone UX agencies,
what does your sales process look like?

Is it primarily selling to the companies who own the web properties,
attempting to convince them of the need for better UX, or is it more
strategic partnerships with development shops?

Seems like the latter is the most stable approach, and a somewhat
easier sell (since dev shops or other 'full-service' web shops are
at least familiar with the UX world).

What are you experiences?

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Expression/Sketchflow workshops in Portland or Seattle?

2010-01-06 Thread David Shaw
Hi George,

There's a ton of training out there for the more programmatical aspects, but
not a whole lot for true UX practitioners (I'm also in Portland BTW). I
attended the Silverlight Tour back in August (
https://agilitrain.com/Workshop/Schedule/Silverlight_Tour_Workshop) and
thought it was pretty good. Much better than a few other classes that I've
investigated. Erik Mork (PDX resident too) was the instructor for it. It
really depends on what you need out of the training, but I definitely
suggest you talk to the instructors first to see if what they teach matches
with what you need.

Email me off-list if you need/want any more information.

Good luck!
David

Re: [IxDA Discuss] How do you sell UX?

2010-01-06 Thread Michael Dunn
I'm in the process of ramping up a UX consultancy shop right now, and we're
approaching a lot of smaller shops and offering ourselves as a resource.
We've already established a relationship with one and so far so good.

We're keen on this model as it lets us focus on providing UX services
without falling into the trap of becoming a one-stop shop (which in my
experience tends to lead to problems- it's the reason why we broke off and
started our own thing). Mind you, we can do non-UX related execution but
prefer to take that work on on a case by case basis and it always is a
result of the UX work rather than separate from it.

Important thing to remember: Forcing items into a heading they don't
fit under is worse then having no headings at all. Also, items can be
in more than one heading, really. If you have too many items to do
that, well, perhaps you have too many items? Maybe your app should be
broken into a suite of apps.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Search Results Pagination (top bottom?)

2010-01-06 Thread William Brall
Pay EXTRA close attention to what you are paginating. Sometimes a
big-ol-list of items page after page is the wrong fit. In the app I
am working on, for example, there is a big old list of all the
articles released in the last forever. The obvious thing to do was to
paginate them into 10 or 20 item chunks, but what is the use of such a
list. really?

We decided that our users were using this mainly to get a handle on
what everyone was doing that day, and to scan back to items they knew
were released recently but weren't sure what they were named.

So we paginated by day. However many came out that day, are shown.
The idea being that should there ever be THAT many items on a single
day, we'll look into ways to filter it, but for now there are only
10-30 articles released a day, so it isn't a big deal.

[IxDA Discuss] Social Network Open Source Platform - Recommendations?

2010-01-06 Thread Thomas Greenough
I am looking for a Social Networking Platform (LAMP preferably) - Open
Source would be ideal, which will allow the user to see a specific
template once they login, dependant upon the domain they align
themselves to during sign-up.

The user chooses an email username, which is then attached to one of
200 domain names. This domain is branded and the user sees this once
they login through the main portal.

Any pointers?

Thomas

ps: as for assigning email addresses - I am open to taking advice
here too!! :)
