[IxDA Discuss] Location/Geographic Search Design Patterns
Hi folks, I'm working on a project that requires users to be able to search for a teacher or school (for yoga, but that's not really important) within their neighbourhood. There are two main scenarios: Someone who just wants to find a place near them and someone who knows of a teacher/school and wants to find it. We have a database with all the names and addresses and, of course, can try listing these via postcode or suburb, but this usually is a bit of a failure for people living very near a different code/suburb. The Google Maps API is useful, but the density of results in a city can sometimes make it pretty useless with lots of zooming in and out and scrolling about to find anyone. Does anyone have any design patterns or examples where something like this is well implemented? (By the way, I had a look on Peter Morville's http://searchpatterns.org/ site - I don't have the book yet - but, oh irony, I couldn't find anything quite like what I was looking for when I searched. Maybe there is some terminology for such a search that I'm not aware of). Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Hi Andy, It might be worth taking a look at everyblock.com or dopplr.com as they show a lot of information in both textual and map display alongside each other - might give you some inspiration. everyblock.com may be especially helpful as they group results together at different zoom levels. In terms of general map design, Making Maps by John Krygier is definitely worth a look. http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=81aX0AIviv8Clpg=PP1ots=ymAvD1wliedq=making mapspg=PP1#v=onepageq=f=false Hope this helps Graham Sear . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Flash Rotators
Hi Kagan, I've recently ended up using carousels as they allow for freeing up valuable screen space resulting in less visual clutter, giving a cleaner design. So, I am pretty much in favour of them if you have a lot of content you have to display. Obviously they still have to be implemented correctly... If you're looking for design pattern input, when it's best to use a carousel and how best to implement them, these websites should help: http://developer.yahoo.com/ypatterns/selection/carousel.html http://ui-patterns.com/pattern/Carousel http://www.blinkinteractive.com/essays/usability_highlights_2008.php - further down the page there are a few small tips. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Location/Geographic Search Design Patterns
Andy, If you have exact addresses for businesses (rather than just zip), the Google Maps query can get more precise latitude/longitude, so if the user supplies an address you could give a more accurate sorted list (maybe sorted by proximity initially). The grouping on everyblock.com is really cool, but might be more difficult to implement (I haven't explored the maps API though, so maybe there actually is something relevant there). Having the combination of an embedded Google Map with live click/zoom and a sorted list next to it could be a nice solution. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Making a web application feel like a native application
Hi Miles, I've worked with EXT and Silverlight, both of which can make very rich client experiences, across a browser based system. If you make the browser chromeless, and limit/customize right click it's very difficult to tell you're ina browser, besides the title bar, (unless of course you get rid of this too). Note when I've designed for very rich interactions, cross browser compatibility can be a monster, as is browser version to version. If you can control the browser version, you'll be much farther ahead. OK best of luck, if you find a better/new framework, definitely tell me! Ciao! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Stop, Pause, Play
Hi Stephen, In Spain the symbols you mention are used, but I think they pre-date the internet as they were already on cassette and VHS players, so maybe it's not the best example for the impact of the internet on language (?). - Whether the internet and sites like YouTube have consolidated the use these of these icons could be another matter. In terms of language, it's true that the word play has entered the Spanish (spoken) language (whether due to cassette players or later technology, I don't know), but interestingly enough I would say it is not used as a verb, but rather as the name of the button (or icon). The verb to play in this sense would be reproducir. But you could tell someone to dale al play or hit play. I guess these words are/were printed on a lot of tape recorders, CD players etc and that's why. The verb pausar already exists in Spanish, so doesn't really change from the original Spanish as the words are so similar. Stop already existed (seen on road signs for example). Hope that helps! Thanks for the everyblock.com link %u2013 I hadn't seen that (I live in Germany, so not much use to me). It's got a pretty rocking interface and the grouping into number counts is a nice approach to that clustering problem. It's looking like the Google API can do what we need, the question for us it to work out how to expose the other text-based info in a graceful way. Even Google Maps doesn't seem to do this very nicely, but I think we can probably get something going. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Using ellipsis in menu, context menus or buttons
Mentally, I have always mapped the presence of an ellipsis to Puts the user in a modal state where he has to do something to get back to what he was doing -- ie, shows a dialog that the user has to interact with (if only to exit), but there could be other modal states to be processed that are not tied to a dialog. That isn't quite how it is usually used, I realize, but as you note, how it is usually used isn't consistent. (Note that the model I used would put an ellipsis on a command which just puts up a status alert. Because to the user, an alert is a dialog, no different than the no-op About dialog in what the user has to do next. Which should encourage use of other status techniques than mode-forcing alerts! -- Jim On 02/15/2010 02:28 AM, sysscore wrote: i have a question about when i should use ellipsis for commands in menus, contextual menus and buttons in desktop applications (in Java). Sadly, the guidelines of microsoft and mac osx are different about this topic. I have found some interesting links in the web but nothing could answer my questions... Microsoft writtes, that ellipsis should be used, when: Proper use of ellipses is important to indicate that users can make further choices before performing the action, or even cancel the action entirely. The visual cue offered by an ellipsis allows users to explore your software without fear. This doesn't mean you should use an ellipsis whenever an action displays another window—only when additional information is required to perform the action. For example, the commands About, Advanced, Help, Options, Properties, and Settings must display another window when clicked, but don't require additional information from the user. Therefore they don't need ellipses. In case of ambiguity (for example, the command label lacks a verb), decide based on the most likely user action. If simply viewing the window is a common action, don't use an ellipsis. *** Macintosh writtes, that ellipsis should be used, when the action: Is performed by the user in a separate window or dialog. For example, Preferences, Customize Toolbar, and Send Feedback all use an ellipsis because they open a window (potentially in another application, such as a browser) or a dialog in which the user sets preferences, customizes the toolbar, or sends feedback. To see why such commands must include an ellipsis, consider that the absence of an ellipsis implies that the application performs the action for the user. If, for example, the Send Feedback command did not include an ellipsis, it would imply that feedback is generated and sent automatically by the application. *** I think, the rules of mac osx are very easy to understand. But the rules of microsoft are not. Furthermore, when i check up some microsoft products, the rules are not respected (e.g. the Options button). In our application we have for example a non modal dialog, in which items can be locked or unlocked. The problem is, the user does not need to be perform the command immediately. But if i named the menu command Lock/unlock items the ellipsis are required, because user could be expected, that the command will be executed immediately. In other dialogs, user can managed diefferent presets of specific settings. Should i don't use ellipsis only if the command name is non-ambiguous e.g. Permission overview or only information will be displayed? Should i use ellipsis, if the user can make some changes (immediately or not immediately)? Or must commands named without the verb of the action? Re: [IxDA Discuss] UML for UX?
I've found UML to be quite helpful in requirements definition -- the process enables workflow to be described in a way that is entirely separate from defining the UI. The end result is a set of requirements that doesn't rely on UI elements (which can be defined later, and not baked in during requirements generation). -Anne On Mon, Feb 15, 2010 at 8:54 AM, gail swanson gail_swan...@sbcglobal.net wrote: My organization is moving toward UML for all of its documentation, from requirements through development and maintenance. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Taxonomy for IA?
Fascinating Tony, thank you. Here's what I get from this method, in no particular order or hierarchy with some duplication: user experience design mobile devices graphical user interfaces software interaction design taxonomies data modelling creating user interfaces sketching wireframes tools deliverables card sorting strategy best practices findability learning new interfaces content management models uml soa (?) I also searched the same keyword tool for information architecture. If anyone has any ideas about how they would sort and add to this very rough outline, I'd welcome the input. If it helps, I want to create a set of topics that I can use to publish content about IA so my IA readers can find information in 3-10 useful buckets. Thanks, Tony. Appreciate any other input, too! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Taxonomy for IA?
This looks like an interesting exercise, and it's one that is oddly apropos to my MSIS course-work; two semesters ago I took Information Architecture and I am currently in a Knowledge Organization seminar where we have just covered Linnaeus. Looking at @TimSlavin's post I am very much reminded of Vickery's Classification and Indexing in Science. Appendix A of his work is dedicated to a discussion of the historical aspects of the classification of science, and his conclusions seem evident in the above list - I forwarded it to my Knowledge Organization professor and said it looked to me more like a taxonomy specific to a webpage redesign. And there's nothing wrong with that because it is probably a reaction to an historical trend (or, a concept that has lately been percolating in my mind, natural selection of knowledge). But I think that a taxonomic methodology that doesn't take a wide historic view of IA will fail to miss the larger brush-strokes of the field, and consequently fail to miss some of the wider classifications and hierarchies within the field. I think that it is also fair to say it is worth figuring out which taxonomic approach might be the best fit for the field. Do we go for the IA equivalent Linnaean Taxonomy or go the phylogenetic systemics (cladistic) route? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] UML for UX?
Well, I've looked at the diagrams and thought about their implications for the confluence of technical culture and interaction design culture. Perhaps this will help ... Of the UML diagrams http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unified_Modeling_Language#Diagrams_overview ... at a detail level, the sequence diagram aligns best with what interaction designers like to talk about. You can have several actors experiencing events and notifying one another with messages. The activity diagram is basically a flow chart, which can be at a high level or a low level. The really delicate one is the use case diagram. If you can come to agreement with your UML adoption team on how to express scenarios and how those relate to use case diagrams, you'll have a good time. This is your chance to advocate for a view that is strongly context-driven, in which the systems play a supporting role and recede from playing a determining role in the interactions. You may end up writing the scenarios separately, or using the use case notation to write scenarios that come from your understanding of typical uses, or cross-checking your scenarios against use cases that were primarily written with systems in mind. It's not that the systems aren't important, but they can easily dominate the discussion. So it's the manner of interpretation of the use case diagrams that you'll probably want to pay the most attention to. [IxDA Discuss] [event] UX Show and Tell at Maark
Time: March 4, 2010 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm Location: Maark Street: 109 State Street, Suite 2 City/Town: Boston Website or Map: http://tiny.cc/oHI2v Phone: (617) 723-2122â Event Type: workshop Organized By: Chris Avore RSVP: http://uxshowandtell.ning.com Event Description: UX Show Tell is a casual workshop thatâs all about the work. Show shortcuts. Ask what to annotate in a wireframe. Draft scenarios and user stories, and identify one from the other. Get feedback from practitioners instead of stakeholders and engage in discussions on process and strategy. Bring your deliverables to either get useful, implementable feedback or to show unique solutions to potentially common design problems. Drafts/incomplete work welcome. We'll have a round-table discussion where one person tells the group if they need help with a design problem, or if they are sharing a unique solution that's worked well for them in the past. That person will then take a few minutes to walk through what he or she is sharing and where help is needed, if appropriate. Questions and dialogue from the rest of the group are expected and encouraged--this isn't meant to be one person presenting to an audience! If you don't want to bring anything to show, you're more than welcome to attend and contribute to the discussion. We'll decide later where to take the discussions after the workshop is officially over at 8:30 PM. As always, all current or prospective user experience designers, information architects, web developers, content strategists, graphic designers, etc. are encouraged to share deliverables or just attend. Paper deliverables are perfectly acceptable, and we'll also have wireless internet, a projector and screen available for showing work. Drafts, incomplete work, personal projects and prototypes are all welcome for sharing. Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! [IxDA Discuss] [EVENT] Practical User Research Interview Techniques
Date: Thursday, March 25, 2010 Time: 6pm socializing. 6.30pm to 8.00pm, interview practice Place: Microsoft New England RD Center, One Memorial Drive, Cambridge, MA 02142 (http://tiny.cc/JiAOd) Audience: Primarily IXDA members and UX practitioners RSVP: http://tiny.cc/fH6ef Event Description Interviewing is a skill that is at the core of a wide variety of research methods in user-centered design including stakeholder interviews, contextual inquiry, usability testing and focus groups. Consequently, a researcherâs skill in conducting interviews has a direct impact on the quality and accuracy of research findings and subsequent decisions about design. A skilled interviewer will be able to conduct an interview that uncovers the key elements of a participantâs perspective on a topic in a manner that is unbiased by the interviewer. User researchers and user-centered designers are hired for this very ability. But how do you know if you are a good interviewer? How do you know that you are asking the right questions in the right way? You want to be unbiased, but how can you be sure? Are you maximizing time you have with participants to uncover insights that will help transform your design? During this session, we will review research interview best practices and share an interview evaluation worksheet for coaching and staff development we developed. Meeting attendees will have the opportunity test their interviewing skills and provide constructive feedback to others during an interactive session. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Stop, Pause, Play
@ Cennydd - iPod ubiquity changed the old research findings. 10 years ago normal people weren't too aware of the different transport controls (especially the more esoteric ones such as next track/previous track). Now, a larger number use them on a daily basis. Of course, you could still screw things up with poor button placement. What I would point out in training sessions is that the red circle, when seen on its own, is often associated with stop, but in transport controls it means record. Of course in the days of physical controls you had to also hold down play to make record work, so the cost of the error would be lower. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I'm a big fan of the UML (except I hate saying The UML :-) In my past life I had to do double duty creating UX documentation and System Requirements.
