Re: [IxDA Discuss] Tools for communicating styles to developers

2007-10-05 Thread Matthew Nish-Lapidus
If you're working with a good (proper) interface developer/engineer
and not just an app dev then you could probably trust them to
interpret your visual designs accurately for the look and feel.. a
good interface dev will have an interest in design and be willing to
work with you to make it all work. the functionality will come from
the wireframes, flow diagrams, and conversations.

When we work on a large project we usually have a team that includes a
visual designer, interaction designer/ia, app dev, and interface dev.
They would all work together from the beginning and develop a cohesive
vision of the final product.

Jim -

That's pretty much my method now, except I use comps brought into
illustrator, where I use callouts to spec styles (rather than a word
doc.)

The problem (for me) is this is time-intensive process, and puts the
burden on the designer to flesh out everything; something inevitably
gets missed.

Time allowing, creating actual css seems the best method. But i'm
wondering whether there's a tool out there to streamline the
process, much like blueprint.css streamlines css creation.

2007-10-05 Thread Jim Brennsteiner
Gabriel,

I create my wireframes and mockups in Illustrator. I document style
information in a word doc (style name, description, specs, etc.)

As the style information evolves, I update the word doc. I usually
don't go back to the illustrator file unless there are major
changes.

Jim

I use Illustrator, and a folder in Photoshop called 'Guides', in
which i put all kinds of comments, lines, and semi-transparent
(Multiply effect) blocks of colour to indicate areas .. etc.

I also use Comps a lot.

Thanks for the responses.

Bryan - I'm using illustrator rather than visio, but same idea -
using callouts to define specs.

Ty - css is the best solution since the work won't go to waste, but
in reality I rarely have the time. This speaks to my css chops!

Jennifer - I like the tracing paper idea, although it needs to be
digital, so transparent layers it would be.

Thanks for the thoughtful responses.
