If you press Play on an album (or track, artist, genre etc) to make the
playlist contain just that album, random mix will stop. Likewise, if
you go to the screen that says Now Playing and press Add, it will stop.
Anything that clears or replaces the playlist will stop the mix.

Yes, it can easily be coded out, but it's not a feature that most would
want. You could apply a custom patch to your copy of slimserver, or
add it as a hidden pref and see if you can get it committed. Apologies
if you're not a coder, but I'm sure you could get someone to do it for

[slim] Re: Restrict MP3 vs. FLAC formats by the player and/or player type?

2005-10-31 Thread dropbear

to selectively choose formats for different players you have to edit
convert.conf.

I have played only a little bit with this file, so for more help look
at the 'Ripping / Encoding / Transcoding / Tagging' forum.

The line
mp3 mp3 * * .
says when you choose a mp3 file convert it to mp3 for all player types
and all players.

So to send only mp3 files to the slimp3 you would change the line above
to read
mp3 mp3 slimp3 *
and to send flac to the squeezebox only would update
flac flac * *
to
flac flac squeezebox *

Anyway, have a look at the other forum for more, and better explained,
information about convert.conf. Also, always make a backup of
convert.conf just in case.

[slim] 6.2 SLIMP3 (original)

I've had multiple issues trying to get my SLIMP3 to work with 6.2.
Basically, it takes forever to load and then the funtionality is
severly crippled all around (see all the other posts on the issues).
Ended up being simply a waste of my time.

I initially tried running it on my G4 Sawtooth. Thought it may be a
processor related problem Perl so I installed it on my G4 Mini
(1Ghz). Same story.

I'm now back on 6.0.2 and working fine.

Is 6.2 supposed to support the SLIMP3 player?

If yes, I would have to say it's a pretty poor attempt, and anyone in
my situation should not even try it. Your time is worth more than
this.

that this only makes sense if you have multiple genres in use (which I

(include, exclude, don't care).

Is anyone looking at this, or is this just too much of a minority
requirement right now?

BTW, I should say that I think the Random Play feature as it stands is
absolutely excellent, I am using it quite a bit, so much better than a
dumb shuffle anything from the library approach. I'm just looking
for some icing on the cake. If I was brave enough I might even have a

I ordered my Squeezebox 2 from UK, to avoid problems with customs, VAT
etc. This was the best alternative when I ordered, comparing US, UK and
the Swedish alternatives.

One problem though, the UK dealer includes AC Power adaptor
(appropriate plug by region) on their web, just as Slimdevices do on
their page. So I assumed that I'd get a Swedish plug. You can't assume
anything, the plug was for UK. But my unit was faulty, i didn't power
up (using a temporary power solution) so I returned it. I complained
about the plug and their interpretation of appropriate plug by region
was that that their deliver was correct from the start. But I got a plug
adaptor for free with the replacement for the faulty unit.

[slim] v6.2 and Mac OS X Startup?

Hi all,

I just upgraded to 6.2 of SlimServer under Mac OS X Tiger, and even if
I choose the Automatically Start When System Boots option in the
System Preferences, SlimServer does not want to start by itself. I can
manually start it using the Start Server button. Any ideas on how to
go about troubleshooting and fixing this?

Thanks in advance for any pointers,

Sadly you pay customs and VAT on the freight costs too, so you will end

SlimServer supports replay gain tags from J River Media Center. Media
Center also supports WMA files, so you might try it for adding replay
gain to your WMAs. (There's a 30-day trial version.) I only use MP3, so
I don't know if it tags them the same way to be compatible.

@ Mark: MC supports Flac files, so it might work for those, too.

Hej hanpa!

Which UK dealer did you order from and what was the total amount you

I use EAC for ripping, together with MAREO some DOS scripts I wrote to do

I had at one time used the PDF Catalogue Creator from the plugins page, and

2005-10-31 Thread ModelCitizen

If anyone manages to get the SQLite ODBC Driver to work on XP Pro with a
late version of Office (I'm using 2003 here) could they post a how to
here?

I copied slimserversql.db to my desktop (so I did not screw up the
original one), created a SQLite3 User DSN via Administrative Tools/Data
Sources with a path to the db file on my desktop and a friendly name (I
assume Data Source Name is a friendly name thing), put Lock Time Out to
1000 seconds (gained from SQLite ODBC Driver readme.txt). Ignored the
two check boxes.

When I opened slimserversql.db in MS Access I received the message MS
Jet Database Engine could not find the object slimserversql.db. Make
sure the object exists and you spell it's name and the path name
correctly. As I never typed any names or paths (used browse function)
the message didn't help. The associated Help File is blank (thanks MS).

I then tried changing the User DNS to aim at C:\Program
Files\SlimServer\server\Cache\slimserversql.db and then tried opening
the db in Access and Excel but received the same result.

I installed just for one user. I have a vague recollection that I
found the same problem, and so I switched to Start at Login, which
does work for me. And there doesn't seem to be any advantage in

Maybe someone from SlimDevices can give a definitive answer, but it

suggestions, but to no avail. This onlyhappens with ripped CDS (Apple
Lossless, AIFF, AAC-all the same). Internet radio works like a charm.

Well I finally set it up to continuously monitor the bufer while it is
playing. I found that sometimes in mid-song the buffer gradually drops
to 0% over a short time, and that's when the continous dropouts happen-
and the buffer stays at 0% during this time. The signal strength has
not changed when this happens, or when the buffer stays at 0%, and the
wireless network is working otherwise during this time.

What might account for this, and how do I fix it??

Probably accounted for by something taking all the CPU for a while.
I'm told that some widgets do that (if you are using Tiger). More
worryingly, some useful processes (maybe even perl) can do it. And
refreshing the Web browser (particularly if pointed at the SlimServer
page) can have that effect.

But none of this really explains why this only happens on CDs.

[slim] Memory Footprint makes me rethink recommending Squeezebox

2005-10-31 Thread baconrad

I've been using Squeezebox for a while now and have enthusiastically
recommended it to others (some of whom have actually purchased it). I
can't bring myself to recommend it to someone with the caveat that they
will need another 70-80mb of memory and additional cpu capacity to
support it...even when it's not in use.

I see the memory footprint getting increasingly bloated. Now we have an
additional 7mb of memory to run some other process in the tray.

I'm a software developer myself. We have an enterprise wide application
that tracks all the assets and associated maintenance, accounting, etc
for a VERY large institution. It does not use as much memory and other
resources as Squeezebox.

It seems like the software needs to be rearchitected so different
plug-ins are only loaded as they are used and are unloaded when not in
use (see Eclipse).

Sorry to go negative, but I would like to see the software improved.

You should be able to use your public IP address
to access SlimServer. Unfortunately with a
dynamic IP address, it may change on you after you
leave. But you can fix an address using a DDNS

Also your router has to be set to port-forward the
SlimServer port. Otherwise your public IP address
cannot resolve to the private IP address of the
SlimServer running in your network.

be easy, just play location http://SlimServer IP

I'm not sure what happens if you connect the

to look for SlimServers and fail. I'm not sure
then if it asks you to enter the IP address of
SlimServer since mine always connects.

There's always SqueezeNetwork, and that should
work regardless of where the Squeezebox is.

[slim] Re: Genre Question

2005-10-31 Thread dfk

Michaelwagner Wrote:
Basically, the programmer who wrote that module misinterpreted the
 standard and therefore miscoded.

The very first version of the ID3 tag standard allowed for a fixed
number of genres, and they were numbered. 60 I think. And had an
 enumerated list of them.

In the next revision, they decided this was too restrictive. So they
made genres character strings. But they left a provision that you could
use the old genres, in a multitude of ways:

 1. just a single number - means use the old genre

 2. (number) - means the same as above

 3. (number)(number)(number) - the song fits into several of the old
 style genres

 4. (number)refinement - the song is like old genre number but with a
 text string as a refinement.

The original programmer mistakenly didn't require the opening bracket
in case 4, so your 60's tag was being taken as genre 60, refinement
 's.

Sorry, it's not a simple explanation, but it wasn't a simple problem to
 figure out either.

 Hope this helps.

Michael

I understood that explanation. If the programmer forgot to add (number)
then your left whith the refinement of just 's and nothing before it.

The only curiosity I have with any of this, is that how come no one
ever noticed that this was a problem before I mentioned it? Either
everyone who used a genre of 's was inputting them in (as was pointed
out in this thread) correct English :-) Or, no one is using genres of
60's 70's etc.

ceejay said earlier in this thread that he has succesfully applied a
test of 70's but if SlimServer was at fault how could he manage that?
Just curious

Perhaps he wasn't using MP3s as his test case.

So a comment tag could contain
 Theme:Party
 Tone:Mellow

 or whatever you wanted.

AFAIK SLIM doesn't support this (nor does anyone else I'm aware of).

SlimServer does support the comment tag as I have it working :-) But
IMHO comments is the place to put info about the artist or album. It
would be great if Slim could see 'Theme' tag. Surely it can't be
that difficult for you guys here to put in place?

comment tags work. I use them too. But the segmented, 2 level
comment tags (for lack of a better name, I can't recall what the
standard calls them) are, I think, not (yet) supported by Slim. But
they could be.
It would be great if Slim could see 'Theme' tag. One can't just go about
making up one's own tags willy-nilly. There is a
standard to be followed. If you don't follow it, no one's tagging
software will work on those song files. And users will be very
unhappy.
Surely it can't be that difficult for you guys here to put in place?
It's not that it's hard for slim to do. It's that no one else would
support this non-standard tag, so it would at worst be essentially
useless and at worst might break things.

That's why I suggested improving the support for the comment tag. There
is a sub-structure within it that allows arbitrary tags and values,
somewhat like you suggested.

2005-10-31 Thread Michaelwagner

The code that reads tags in MP3s is different than the code that reads
tags in FLAC. So that might be the difference. Also, from my reading of
the code, a leading space or other whitespace (that you might not
notice) would cause the bug to be bypassed. All sorts of posibilities
... sometimes in code the oddest bugs remain unnoticed for the longest
times ...

The ID3 spec says the same tags are used in other situations, like
FLAC, but at least in the current Slim code, no advantage is taken of
that parallelism (if indeed it's even correct - I haven't taken the
time to check yet). Might be something to check out.

You are kidding, nothing will ever stop me from complaining! That's my
duty as a customer, and I take my duties very seriously...

Apart from that, I would like to throw my 2 cents on the knob-issue.
As a user of an audiotron, some soundblaster wireless music thingies,
a grand old slimp3 and a squeezebox 2, I have to say that the audiotron
really shines with its knob navigation. Having a slim bundled with an
rf remote with display (which is the only great thing of the sbwm) and
a ipod-like navigation knob would be heaven.

Sonos is a bit going that way, but they are not in my budget and the
song title limits and their very closed product approach are not what I
am looking for.

Re: [slim] SB1-G fonts

2005-10-31 Thread Triode

SB2 uses different font files from SB1-G as the
resolution is higher. If you fancy playing with a bitmap editor then you
can change the font definitions, but it is not trivial and I would not recommend
it unless you have lots of patience to get it right..

  Hello
  all.

I run a mixed setup which is
mostly SB2 but also includes an SB1-G. The fonts on the SB1-G appear to be
‘chunkier’ than those on the SB2 but for me – in certain situations it makes
them appear more ‘readable’. I appreciate that the SB1-G VFD is a different
resolution to the SB2 but is there a relatively simple way to force the SB2 to
display the same fonts as the SB1-G?

  I am currently running the
‘official’ 6.2 release – though this appears to have been the situation for as
long s I can remember – or at least from the time I got my first
  SB2.

  Kind
  regards

OK.. downloaded the trial and its now 'analysing' all of my audio files.
Do I need to do anything else to ensure ReplayGain info is added to the

You need to make sure MC is set to save the analysis to your tags. It
probably already is, but to make sure, go to Tools Options General
and make sure that Update tags when file info changes is enabled.
Than also go to the Library section of options. Scroll through the
Library fields to find Replay Gain then click edit and make sure
store in tags is enabled. Do the same for Album Gain (not sure if
SS reads albums gain too, though.)

If you find that it wasn't saving to tags before you started, just
select the analyzed files, right click and go to Library tools Update
Tags (from library). Then I'm pretty sure you will have to do a clear
and rescan in SS. You can verify that SS is reading the volume
adjustment by going to song info either in the Web UI or on the remote
by pressing right and then the up/down arrows to scroll through the
song info.

[slim] Re: Accessing slimserversql.db contents

2005-10-31 Thread lostboy

MC, this worked for me on XP/SP2 - Access 2003

1. Using the Administrative Tools / Data Sources option - select the
System DSN tab and configure (or add another) a SQLite3 source pointing
to your copy of the db.

2. Open Access and create a new blank database, use the menu options:
File - Get External Data - and either Import or Link Tables (as you
prefer). In the dialogue box that opens set file type to ODBC(). This
should open a Select Data Source dialogue box. Select the tab 'Machine
Source' - click on the source you configured in 1. Click OK (I used
1000 msec as a time out).

3. Select the tables you want to link to in the dialogue that appears
and click OK - the tables you want will appear in the Access database
control.

4. The relations between the tables will not come over, but if you link
rather than import the table specific indexes and keys seem to be
preserved (all are lost if you import).

Happy querying

Chris

I was going to bump this once, since most of the new activity was on

I think the SB2 isn't picking up the new group key while I'm using

after a router reboot, then fail to connect anymore. A router reboot
will restore full functionality.

Is there a bug already for WPA2? Should I be creating a new bug?
