to selectively choose formats for different players you have to edit convert.conf. I have played only a little bit with this file, so for more help look at the 'Ripping / Encoding / Transcoding / Tagging' forum. The line mp3 mp3 * * . says when you choose a mp3 file convert it to mp3 for all player types and all players. So to send only mp3 files to the slimp3 you would change the line above to read mp3 mp3 slimp3 * and to send flac to the squeezebox only would update flac flac * * to flac flac squeezebox * Anyway, have a look at the other forum for more, and better explained, information about convert.conf. Re: [slim] v6.2 and Mac OS X Startup?
On 31/10/05 at 07:56 -0800, rei wrote Hi all, I just upgraded to 6.2 of SlimServer under Mac OS X Tiger, and even if I choose the Automatically Start When System Boots option in the System Preferences, SlimServer does not want to start by itself. I can manually start it using the Start Server button. Any ideas on how to go about troubleshooting and fixing this? Did you install for all users or just for one user? I installed just for one user. I have a vague recollection that I found the same problem, and so I switched to Start at Login, which does work for me. And there doesn't seem to be any advantage in starting at boot (even if it works) in this situation. Maybe someone from SlimDevices can give a definitive answer, but it would not surprise me if Start at Boot only works when the preference pane is installed for all users. -- Daniel Cohen ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

On 31/10/05 at 08:01 -0800, bec143 wrote I have been discussingmy dropout problems in the Audiophile forum, but I think this is better here, aince I may have noe new info. I am running a wireless SB2 on a Mac system with an Airport Exreme. I have been plagued by dropouts, and have gone through many many suggestions, but to no avail. This onlyhappens with ripped CDS (Apple Lossless, AIFF, AAC-all the same). Internet radio works like a charm. Well I finally set it up to continuously monitor the bufer while it is playing. I found that sometimes in mid-song the buffer gradually drops to 0% over a short time, and that's when the continous dropouts happen- and the buffer stays at 0% during this time. The signal strength has not changed when this happens, or when the buffer stays at 0%, and the wireless network is working otherwise during this time. What might account for this, and how do I fix it?? Probably accounted for by something taking all the CPU for a while. I'm told that some widgets do that (if you are using Tiger). More worryingly, some useful processes (maybe even perl) can do it. And refreshing the Web browser (particularly if pointed at the SlimServer page) can have that effect. But none of this really explains why this only happens on CDs. -- Daniel Cohen ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Memory Footprint makes me rethink recommending Squeezebox
I've been using Squeezebox for a while now and have enthusiastically recommended it to others (some of whom have actually purchased it). I can't bring myself to recommend it to someone with the caveat that they will need another 70-80mb of memory and additional cpu capacity to support it...even when it's not in use. I see the memory footprint getting increasingly bloated. Now we have an additional 7mb of memory to run some other process in the tray. I'm a software developer myself. We have an enterprise wide application that tracks all the assets and associated maintenance, accounting, etc for a VERY large institution. It does not use as much memory and other resources as Squeezebox. It seems like the software needs to be rearchitected so different plug-ins are only loaded as they are used and are unloaded when not in use (see Eclipse). Sorry to go negative, but I would like to see the software improved. -- baconrad ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Genre Question
Michaelwagner Wrote: Basically, the programmer who wrote that module misinterpreted the standard and therefore miscoded. The very first version of the ID3 tag standard allowed for a fixed number of genres, and they were numbered. 60 I think. And had an enumerated list of them. In the next revision, they decided this was too restrictive. So they made genres character strings. But they left a provision that you could use the old genres, in a multitude of ways: 1. just a single number - means use the old genre 2. (number) - means the same as above 3. (number)(number)(number) - the song fits into several of the old style genres 4. (number)refinement - the song is like old genre number but with a text string as a refinement. The original programmer mistakenly didn't require the opening bracket in case 4, so your 60's tag was being taken as genre 60, refinement 's. Sorry, it's not a simple explanation, but it wasn't a simple problem to figure out either. Hope this helps. Michael I understood that explanation. If the programmer forgot to add (number) then your left whith the refinement of just 's and nothing before it. The only curiosity I have with any of this, is that how come no one ever noticed that this was a problem before I mentioned it? [slim] Re: SB2 not connecting with WPA and AES
I was going to bump this once, since most of the new activity was on Sunday. I think the SB2 isn't picking up the new group key while I'm using WPA2. It'll run fine for about one hour (my group key update interval) after a router reboot, then fail to connect anymore. A router reboot will restore full functionality. Is there a bug already for WPA2? Should I be creating a new bug? -- Ron Palmer ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Automatic volume adjustment in 6.2
Two thoughts: -- would be worthwhile to mention that the volume adjustment requires an SB2 or greater. -- does iTunes and MP3Gain write their volume adjustments to the same place? i ask this because i did a test with MP3Gain to adjust some sound volumes, and when i opened those song in iTunes the volume adjustment slider reflected the change generated by MP3Gain. When i read this iTunes writes volume adjustment data into RVAD tags in MP3 files it made me wonder if iTunes and MPEGain write their info to the same places? -- eschurr ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
