[slim] SB volume, why is it so loud? (i did a search already)

2006-02-05 Thread beatdownvictim

Hi all, i just got my SB to work today, and i was wondering why the heck
it's so bloody loud?!?

Anyway, I'm using the SB's volume control into my amp (analogue
connection). Anyway, When i open up slimserver, it shows volume 1-11.
On my SB, it shows 1-40.

I tried doing a search, but i can't even begin to think what to search.
Can someone help a noob out?

Thanks all!

[slim] Re: Buffer drained, pausing playback

2006-02-05 Thread Michaelwagner

As I recall, there is a performance problem, introduced by a
well-meaning database call at the top of the browse pages. This call
forces the database to enumerate all the tracks every time the web page
refreshes.

This is why I believe this is what is happening to you:
>
> 2006-02-04 16:10:44.4561 browsedb - hierarchy: age,track level: 0
> 2006-02-04 16:11:12.7645 Generating page for status_header.html took: 0
> wallclock secs ( 0.02 usr + 0.00 sys = 0.02 CPU)
> 2006-02-04 16:11:12.9464 ***Stream underrun: 200
> 2006-02-04 16:11:12.9479 00:04:20:04:19:5dBuffer drained, pausing
> playback
> 2006-02-04 16:11:12.9733 00:04:20:04:19:5d Buffer full, starting
> playback
>

at 16:10:44, you started to generate a browse out of the database.
28 seconds later, it finishes and formats the status page.
Then (and only then, because of the way Slimserver is architected) it
notices that it underran the SLiMP3 buffer.
But the SLiMP3 buffer is only about 5 or 10 seconds. So the music
stopped.

There are several solutions.

As suggested, newer squeezeboxes have bigger buffers, so they hide this
problem.

Or remove the expensive and totally unnecessary database call. You can
do this by hacking the web page yourself (hard) or upgrading to the
6.2.2 version, where they reduced the expense of the call by (I think)
caching the result.

A faster processor would have to be about 6 times faster (for your
system) to reduce that 28 second delay to something the SLiMP3 can
overlive. It's unlikely you'd find such a processor.

Re: [slim] Re: Announce: squeezeslave 0.4

2006-02-05 Thread Mark Lanctot
Great to hear that the hissing problem is solved.

I wanted to try this out, this time on my laptop. But
something strange happened - Squeezeslave only runs
for a second or so, just long enough for me to see
the screen, then quits.

There's nothing unusual about the laptop. It plays a
SlimServer stream through foobar2000 just fine. It's
WinXP Pro SP1. Pentium M 1.5 GHz, 512 MB of RAM.

Anything to look for?

I have a sneaking suspicion it's ZoneAlarm Pro. The
first time I ran it, the screen remained open until I
ackowledged ZA that it had permission. As soon as I
did that, the Squeezeslave screen disappears and won't
stay on for more than a second after that. But if I
remove Squeezeslave from ZA's list, it runs just long
enough for ZA to ask permission again, then quits.

Hey Kyle-
Thanks for the suggestion. It used to be the case that the hardware
only supported MP3 playback, however, not that long ago they added
native WMA (Windows Media) support to SB2's and SB3's via a firmware
upgrade. With this said, a SB2 or SB3 should be able to play it...

I know nothing about about it, but AlienBBC uses a player called
Mplayer to play (I think) RealPlayer streams. I may be wrong, but I
think Slimserver can only play mp3 streams. I'm pretty sure than when
you tune into an online station, you have to find an mp3 stream.

Yeah, I don't think there's an easy way to enable scrolling for what
you're doing. Right now that display is refreshed every second (since
it's usually displaying the time) so there wouldnt be enough time to
have it scroll text.

As far as spaces inbetween words, I'm not sure why it wouldn't let you.
I just tried it on my version with no problem. Are you using the

I already run an enhanced version of the MVP software that was
developed by some guys on the Snapstream forums. I use Beyond TV 4.0
and the skin integrates well with the MVP. It resembles Beyond TV, as
a matter of fact. It's a shame, though, because Hauppauge rarely
releases any sort of updates and the tech support is crap at best. If
it wasn't for the community un-officially supporting and hacking it, I
would use it as a paper weight. Cool that there are others releasing
hacks for the skin though!

Eek.. yeah I guess kids have a knack for complicating things. I'm
married but the wife and I visit the local movie theater several times
a month usually, have an extensive DVD collection (several hundred),
and I can't get by without recording the new Battlestar Galactica,
LOST, and a variety of stuff on the History/TLC/Discovery Channel.

I'm a total multimedia addict. My reading skills are A+ but give me a
good film any day of the week.

I have no interest in video -- haven't had a TV in nearly 5 years , and
we just use a laptop if we ever do want to watch a movie. Music on the
other hand is crucial. I'll probably get a flatscreen TV to hang on the
wall when they get down to a reasonable price (maybe two years?), and at
that time I'll build a MythTV box. If Slim Devices is packaging a
solution at that time, fine, and if not, whatever. My interest in the
entire category is lukewarm at best.

Movies require a lot more attention, and my downtime is usually claimed
by hanging with the kids or reading a book -- these activities, like
working, support listening to music in the background. My Slimserver or
a radio is playing music at least 12 hours out of 24... we watch a movie
maybe twice a week.

[slim] Re: Slimbox for travellers

2006-02-05 Thread stokessd

I've got a pair of tivoli radios, a radio one and the stereo one (radio
2 I think). I'm not too impressed with the sound quality. I have a
Boston Acoustics clock radio on my nightstand, and it sounds a whole
lot better to my ears. No line in on the boston radio though.

For travel, I use my iPOD with a set of etymotic research headphones,
and it's hard to beat. Small size and the earphones block out the
airplane noise.

On my electrostatic speaks, I can hear the difference between high bit
rate VBR lame and either flac or the original CD, but the differences
are surprisingly small. Fraunhoffer vs flac is much more obvious.
This arguement is much like TIFF vs low compression JPEG, there are
differences, but it takes some scrutinizing to see it.

I use lame encoded MP3's on my pod, and based on my looking, there is
really no other portable player out there of any merit. I use MP3's
rather than lossless on the pod because I'd rather than a larger music
library rather than a smaller one. I never know what I'll be in the
mood for. IF my pod didn't have enough space for enough music, I'd
compress more, rather than suffer with a smaller library especially
when traveling.

I can't speak from experience, but from what I've read the Roku HD-1000
cannot even stream HDTV that you've recorded via a PC HDTV tuner card
just yet. That's as half-baked as they come, seeing as how they're
touting the HD stuff for that product.

Seeing as how most decent PC HDTV tuners "record" (that is, dump the
transport stream to your hard drive) in *.ts - perhaps Slim could have
the files trancoded on the server side...though, even my dual core
4400+ might sweat at the thought of that! ;-)

In general it has seemed to me that most MMPC solutions in general are
rather half baked at this time.

Certainly if you've got thousands to throw at building a state of the
art multimedia PC solution complete with multiple HD tuners, etc, etc,
then you can get something that is pretty decent.

And in reality it won't be a whole lot better than what something like
the HD-1000 does out of the box.

I would think that Slim could release something pretty impressive in
the $500 range that would blow the community away, but they might have
to move away from Perl to do it, and right now the market might not
support it.

I tried synchronising with a SB2 player.

I had music playing on the PC via SqueezeSlave. I then selected my SB2 player
and selected to sync with the SqueezeSlave player. I then pressed stop - the
music continued to play (I was next to PC - not sure if music stopped on my
SB2). Music stopped after a minute or so, but then couldn't start it again!

I noticed the following in the SqueezeSlave DOS window:

decoding error
decoding error
http_recv: error reading from socket
http_recv: error reading from socket
decoding error
decoding error
decoding error
decoding error

I restarted SqueezeSlave, and then it was much happier.

There seems to be a problem when selecting to play new music whilst other music
is already playing. When I do, I hear a quick pause in the currently playing
music, then a 1/2 second of the music, then it stops permanently but reports
that it is playing. This seems to result in the "decoding error" messages.
Pressing stop and start (from web UI for the SqueezeSlave player) a few times
seems to sort it out, but the synchronisation is sometimes 1/2 second out.

Is there any way to start the app without the DOS window? Maybe I could run it
as a service (via srvany)?

I'm an iPal user myself. It's a class bathroom radio and you can charge
it up and take it away for the weekend with your iPod. Stereo
separation where the speakers are only a foot or two apart is worthless
so you'd be better off with a quality mono speaker.

As for detecting the difference between 128kbps QuickTime AAC and FLAC,
it's damn difficult even on good speakers. Try a proper ABX test if you
don't beleive me (visit Hydrogenaudio for test setup details).

[slim] Re: Roll back / uninstall 6.5 beta?

Hi,

I'm having trouble finding a specific list of how to totally remove
SlimServer from Mac OSX. I was using 6.5, but it was not working, and
I tried removing it and then installing 6.2.1, but now it only starts

[slim] Re: Slimbox for travellers

2006-02-05 Thread Pale Blue Ego

A nice-sounding powered speaker is the Tivoli iPal. It's basically an
AM/FM radio with a rechargable battery and a single "high-end" 2.5"
speaker. It has a stereo headphone jack and an inupt jack to handle an
iPod (or SB).

The tuner in this thing is better than the one in many modern
receivers. It pulls in tons of stations and locks on without drift.
We use it out in the yard with FM or an iPod and it sounds great. The
lack of stereo speakers doesn't matter much - with most small powered
speakers, you don't get much separation anyway. The amp and speaker in
the iPal sound clean, clear, and (dare I say it?) rich. It sounds
better than many big boomboxes with cheap ear-bleeding speakers.

It's kind of pricey at $150, but this is a quality unit that will last
for many years, and it's something you'd actually want to listen to.
The rechargable battery is supposedly good for up to 16 hours, though
I've never come close to verifying that claim. It's fine for hotel
listening and would work great with a SB in a net-connected hotel room.
Use it with SqueezeNetwork for internet radio, the live archive, or the
sleep-inducing ocean/rain/cricket sounds. Good alarm clock, too.

MusicMagic stores these as playlists, but they are located within the

the slimserver scans. The best way to be able to put this into

Using moods is already filed as an enhancement request for slimserver.

some cheap (they will have to go) 15$ lab tech speakers.

My wife did change the songs and I could not see the display.

Reslut in the Bath room I could tell the diference every single time
In the Kitchen I was accurate 70% of the time

I used the following albums to test :
Made in heaven form Queen
Carmen Fantasie Anne Sophie Mutter (Deutsche Gramophon)

The CD's are all encoded to flac transcoded them to 256VBR MP3 for the
test

Did test some other pop Track where I could not tel the difference for
most of them

I agree, as long as it's analog out. There are lots of setups using
laptops where the difference would be obvious. People with those setups
probably wouldn't have a squeezebox though...

[slim] Re: Multiple song entries in SlimServer...

2006-02-05 Thread Amberale

Hi,

I have duplicate tracks too. After digging through the forum a few
months ago I think it is due to adding songs to playlists. I create the
playlists using Winamp not slim server's interface and place them in the
Slimserver playlist folder. I seem to get a duplicate track for
everytime the track appears in a playlist.

I keep updating slimserver to the latest version hoping they will fix
this, but sadly it continues. (SlimServer Version: 6.2.1 - 5194 -
Windows XP - EN - cp1252 ) It is a VERY disappointing problem. With
this and the inability of the device to recover after a wireless
network disconnect without me doing a device restart, I'm starting to
look for another product.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Rob

[slim] Re: Slimbox for travellers

2006-02-05 Thread ideasculptor

There is no way in heck you are going to be able to detect the
difference between a VBR 256Kbit mp3 (or even much lower, like 160)
with small powered speakers connected to the analog output of a laptop.
That's just not physically possible. Just rip a copy of your library
to high bitrate VBR mp3 with lame and use that. Any blind test
comparing flac to such an mp3 is never going to reveal the slightest
difference through speakers so small. Anyone who tells you differently
has obviously not done a blind test. I have 18400+ tracks that takes
up over half a terabyte in flac also ripped to less than 100Gigs as
128kbit AAC, which sounds just fine for any non-critical listening.
OK, so I can't fit my entire library on a 60gig ipod, but it comes
awfully close. Compared to the expense and hassle of trying to build
an audio platform into my suitcase, I'd take the ipod every time
(especially for the airplane listening factor). We're talking about
tunes to listen to while sacking out in a hotel room, not some kind of
audiophile review.

Yeah I'm not interested in a video solution from Slim just yet; I like
the fact that their speciality is an audio device.

That said, if they ever do get around to getting into that market I'm
sure their solution would be the best. That said...I'm just weary of
it all - I've had a Hauppauge Media MVP for just that since its release
(I use it with Beyond TV) and while it's open source and *SUPER
AFFORDABLE* (less than $100 USD) support for it has been slow going and
sloppy as hell. I don't see something from Slim being much more
successful in that relation.

Only time will tell...

You are probably right. I will copy a few gig of flac music on one of

The speakers you refer to see pretty bit for a traveller. I guess I

Who has had experiences with a FLAC compatible portable music player

Me too.

Wouldn't it be easier to make a boombox that accepts CF memory, and
synchs with the home network to update selected files/playlists?

My table synchs when in range, but the MS ActiveSynch 'ware seemed to
encompass mostly email, datebook, contacts- just saying I know it's
possible, not that I have exp..

Then you could take your music, and have it update automatically.

edit: oops I meant 'tablet' not 'table'.

Hissing doesn't seem any better for MP3's on 0.4 compared to 0.3.

[slim] fast forward/rewind problems with WMA

2006-02-05 Thread elidaniel

I'm using slimserver 6.1.2, configured to play WMAs natively, not
transcoded.

The fast forward and rewind operations for WMAs (and the song scanner
plugin) do not work: playback just stops completely. It's working fine
for MP3s, however.

I can't tell whether this is a known bug. There's an open issue in the
bug database about this, but it predates the native WMA support, and
there is nothing in there indicating whether it's still a problem now.
I have seen a couple other complaints along the same lines, but no clear
resolution.

So, should I file a bug report? Is this already a known issue? Is
there some debugging output I can provide that would help track down
the problem?

Thanks!

Good to hear!

Yeah, Mp3tag handles a lot more than MP3s, but
they've been out there too long to change their
name now...

According to their website, it handles:

"* Advanced Audio Coding (aac)
* Free Lossless Audio Codec (flac)
* Monkey's Audio (ape)
* Mpeg Layer 3 (mp3)
* MPEG-4 (mp4 / m4a / m4b / iTunes compatible)
* Musepack (mpc)
* Ogg Vorbis (ogg)
* OptimFROG (ofr)
* OptimFROG DualStream (ofs)
* Speex (spx)
* True Audio (tta)
* Windows Media Audio (wma)
* WavPack (wv)"

which will cover any Squeezebox user and then some.

BTW among the more esoteric formats, WavPack is
the most interesting:

"The hybrid mode provides all the advantages of
lossless compression with an additional bonus.
Instead of creating a single file, this mode
creates both a relatively small, high-quality
lossy file that can be used all by itself, and a
"correction" file that (when combined with the
lossy file) provides full lossless restoration.
For some users this means never having to choose
between lossless and lossy compression!"

[slim] Re: Squeezebox3 seems very buggy

2006-02-05 Thread shawkie

Yet another update.

5) The artifacts are actually gaps introduced by the squeezebox (or
slimserver?). Not entirely suprising. I've tested it with the same
track at different bitrates. At 178kbps (avg?) I just get a couple of
(relatively) long gaps near the start of the track. At 448kbps (avg?) I
get longer gaps near the start and small gaps at fairly regular
intervals all the way through the track. I guess thats logical. But why
does it play perfectly when transcoded to WAV which is 1440kbps?

I'm with you. I think Stern's program is aimed at 13 year old boys.
At least, that's about how old when I was when that sort of stuff

[slim] Announce: squeezeslave 0.4

2006-02-05 Thread rtitmuss

squeezeslave is a command line C program to play audio from the
slimserver. It has no gui so all player control has to be done using a
web browser or another program like Moose.

A new release of squeezeslave is available today, you can download
binaries for Windows, Linux and OSX from:
http://tinyurl.com/9zt4b

This includes fixes for the background hiss in mp3 playback and adds
support for pcm (wav, aiff) playback.

This release supports:
- native flac, pcm and mp3 playback
- gapless flac
- dithering on mp3 audio
- player synchronization
- password protected servers
- multiple players on one slimserver (use --mac option to set player
mac address)

It does not yet support:
- volume (gain) control
- replay gain
- direct streaming (e.g. internet radio)
- audio looping (e.g. for short clips)
- anything other than 44.1Hz streams
- built in ssh tunnelling
- cross fading

Feedback welcome, as always ...

I don't know if windows has the equivalent of a symlink (symbolic link),
but I made a symlink in my root drive which points to the Music
directory on my externally hosted drive, and now rescan actually seems
to function, which is just as well, since browsing the music folder and
adding the entire thing to a playlist did not add album artwork.

I don't think so. You have to use the MMM itself. If it's a feature

2006-02-05 Thread ideasculptor

The same goes for me, in OS X. My Music folder is on a NAS, and
contains 2 subfolders, FLAC and lossy, for the things I haven't yet
ripped to FLAC. No amount of pushing the rescan button does anything,
no matter what setting the drop down is on. Actually, I take that
back. Clear and rescan does clear, but doesn't rescan. Merely adding
each folder to a playlist causes the contents to be imported (although
I am not yet sure whether the artwork is also geting added, since the
scan is still ongoing). What's particularly odd is that all of us had
no issues with the initial scan (I asume. I sure didn't), but we all
have this strange failure when rescanning. It is very annoying as
adding a single new album or artwork involves blowing away the entire
library and rescanning.

Furthermore it would be cleaner if we could add the custom

Okay, I've looked at the bugzilla database (scary reading) and thought
I'd update my comments a bit.

1) This is listed as #571 although this report dates from before the SB
could do native wma.

2) This is listed as #2486 and #1191.

3) This is not listed.

4) Personally, I think WAV should not be transcoded by default but I
don't really care since its configurable.

5) This is not listed and is the most serious in my opinion.

6) This is not listed but also seems to have stopped happening. Not
quite sure what changed.

7) This is not listed. My guess is that it sometimes forgets its
dealing with a sorted list.

8) I think this only happens in the 6.5 beta so it doesn't really
count.

If I can create a login for bugzilla I will add bug reports for 3, 5
and 7.

OK - I know that slim server converts Ogg Vorbis files before streaming
to the player and I have found the "File types" page in the setup, but
by default it seemed to say that Ogg files had three options to be
converted to AIFF, FLAC or MP3 - so how, without unchecking two of the
boxes, do I tell the server which format to stream Ogg files to the SB?
Initially all three were checked.

On SB2/3 SlimServer will use FLAC, SB1/G WAV, SliMP3 MP3. It's always the
"best" format a player supports. If you disabled OGG -> MP3, that wouldn't
change for the Squeezeboxen, but SliMP3 would not play any more, as it
only supports MP3.

the players call for formats in a preferred order. you can loo at the
log with d_source if you want to actually watch the process. In
general, its FLAC, WAV, MP3 in that order. Older hardware drops FLAC,
and even earlier is only MP3. and of course, WMA is played natively on

However, some versions of MMM are known to have a problem with

encoding, if you have a lot of unicode tracks. Some versions of
slimserver have also incorrectly imported the data. Unfortunately,
with
so many versions, nightlies, etc, I cannot recall if this was a known
problem with 6.2.1 specifically. I'd try 6.2.2 for starters, and the
latest from MMM. I'm using SS 6.5, with MMM 1.5 for linux and the

perfectly. The only issue currently is that MMM import slows to a
painful crawl at around 6500 songs when importing at the same tme as
music folder. So, I empty the music folder setting to run a wipe
library and scan. When that is complete (and I do get artwork from that

too), I then enter a music folder. That runs a 'look for new' scan on

the musicfolder, and gets any tracks that MMM didn't handle.

Your missing album art from MMM is likely due to encoding errors as
well

=k

Roger that I will try the latest 6.2X nightly. I thought mine was
quite recent (1 week or so?)

make sure you have the latest MMM as well.

I tried 6.5X and it wont start.

any info as to why? c:\program files\slimserver\server\slim.exe from
command line will give a good reason for not starting.

I dont think I have many (if any) unicode tracks. All I know is almost
every single entry has a MM and a non MM entry.

Since most of my files are FLACs I store all my album arts in a
seperate directory. Is that the recommend way? I never got tagged
album art to work.

I would recommend a cover.jpg in the same folder as each album, as that
is the simplest way. Having all artwork in a single folder should work,
use d_artwork to check that the naming is being translated correctly,
and remember that you need to set the Cover Artwork AND Thumbnail
artwork settings starting with the % character to use the variable
naming. the server user also needs to have valid permissions to access
that folder. If all that you have are files that MMM recognises, then
you probably have no need for the Music Folder setting. If having that
blank does solve the problem, you arent really losing any functionality
aside from the Browse Music Folder.

There are just so many combinations that people want to use when setting
up their music. It is very hard to suggest a "right way" or to guess at
what any one might be doing "wrong". I recommend having a small test
library that you can play with and scan quickly, so that you get used to
how things fit together. The d_scan, d_info, d_musicmagic, d_import,
and d_artwork (and d_parse for cue/playlists) are your friends for this
process, and the smaller library keeps the logs manageable. Accessing
remote systems is an added complexity, with encodings and file sytem
mixes getting in the way. Maybe try a few local tracks and see if you
get a different behaviour.

Hi I just downloaded and installed 6.22. Did a clear and recan. The
same problem with duplicate is happening again.

I am referring to the same network drive using Windows UNC (e.g.

Another reason for not switching to Roku is that some Roku users get
this error as well even on wired connections.

What is worse is the Roku has a timeout in the slimserver emulation
which means after underrun it will reset the connection and stop
playing even though slimserver still sends the data. The only solution
is to stop the song and restart it - your current situation is annoying

I agree. Up until recently (when I upgraded to SB2's as I like that form
factor better) I was using a SLIMP3 a lot. Bug fixes were still forthcoming.

Of course, someday, they will stop supporting the SLIMP3. And I will argue
that that is reasonable. You cannot support legacy hardware forever,
especially if you're a small company.

I'm willing to bet, though, that when that day comes, whatever legacy code is
needed in the slimserver to drive the SLIMP3 is left in there indefinitely, so
it will not be as though the device implodes or something.
