[slim] GUI to manage Slimserver DB?

2006-08-27 Thread agentsmith

For me Windoze mere mortal, the slimserver DB is a blackbox. And
whenever I encountered any of the many little slim DB hiccups, I ended
up deleting the entire database and let it rebiuild which takes hours
on end.

Is there any programs out there for windoze users to be able to diretly
access the SQLite DB to make minor adjustments?

[slim] Re: Newbie problem with installing SlimServer on Linkstation

2006-08-27 Thread stevos

Okay cheers for the advice.

As a recap, i reset the firmware of the linkstation and did a factory
reset of the squeezebox.

I have left the default version of perl installed.

As indicated slimserver version 5.4.0 worked on the linkstation, but
not on the squeezebox, but from the above post it appears that it
doesn't support squeezebox3, so i guess this is normal.

I have installed version 6.3.1 and a version named v2005-09-10 (not
sure which version this is). With these i get the following error
message

./slimserver.pl --daemon --prefsfile /mnt/slim-data/slimserver.pref
--cachedir /mnt/slim-data

The following modules failed to load: DBD::SQLite XML::Parser
HTML::Parser Compress::Zlib

To download and compile them, please run:
/mnt/slimserver/Bin/build-perl-modules.pl

So not really much further on, could this indicate i need to install
some other 3rd party software like mySQL (see above post)?

Did you run /mnt/slimserver/Bin/build-perl-modules.pl? If so, did it run
okay? It is a script that builds the perl modules that you need -- these
aren't pre-built for the Linkstation. You don't need MySQL to run
slimserver 6.2 or 6.3; MySQL is only required for versions of 6.5
released since mid-May.

[slim] Re: Buffering!?

2006-08-27 Thread davep

First of all, how are your friends connecting and attemting to play
music? What players are they using at their end? What format is the
music stored in on your server?

If they are trying to stream high bitrate music across the internet it
is likley that this will fail as the player at their end cannot get
enough data fast enough to enable playing of a continuous stream. You
will need to set up bitrate limiting for the remote players such that
the streams get transcoded to a suitable mp3 format prior to sending.

Secondly, having your ports open is a little dangerous as you are
enabling access to your slimserver to anybody who can hit your ip
address. This would include the neat trick of selecting a suitable song
and feeding it to your player (ideally if you have one called bedroom)
at maximum volume at 3am. I would hope you are using some form of
security such as ssh.

Steve, I have been running version 6.1.1 on a PPC first gen LinkStation
for well over a year now. It has worked without any problems and
response is excellent with about 650 albums/7000 tracks (mostly FLAC,
few mp3s, no transcoding, no album art). I have resisted the urge to
upgrade because it works so good. In parallel, I also run some of the
latest nightly builds of version 6.5b on Mac OS 10.4 Windows boxes on
my backup libraries and I haven't noticed any difference in the response
(with the exception of transcoding for remote streaming) even though my
Mac and Windows hardware is significantly more powerful.

I beleive I still have the original v.6.1.1 tar someplace.

2006-08-27 Thread Michaelwagner

Oh, guys, give it a rest already.

There is excellent support, from Slim Devices, for their box and their
software. If you have a problem with Slimserver, you can take it
there.

This forum is not for problem solving. It's for enthusiasts to trade
other more esoteric information. We can also occasionally help out with
problems, but we're not well equipped, don't have the database and
whatever other tools the support staff have, and most importantly,
we're not paid to be problem solvers.

While it's true that a few of the Slim staff, including the CEO, browse
these forums, almost none of the support staff do.

*Reporting a problem here is not reporting it to Slim support.* And it
has a considerably *lower* chance of getting fixed here than with the
proper support channels.

The original poster has already made it clear he wasn't asking for
help. So, for the purposes of this forum, his posting was noise, not
signal.

How about we let this drop now?

It's a totally pointless waste of time to debate whether we should be
polite to someone that is not looking for help by venting in the wrong
place. Regardless of who thinks they paid what for Slimserver, they
didn't pay it to any of us.

I think the idea is that 6.5 is considered close enough (and with
September 18th looming large on the horizon) that they've branched 6.5
off to only receive bug fixes. I would expect most or all of those bug
fixes to also be posted to the 7.0 trunk, but I'd also watch the Slim
Checkins list very carefully for the bombs that will be dropped there.

I'm a little surprised at the jump to 7.0 myself, since the Software
Roadmap (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SoftwareRoadmap) shows
some Post 6.5 (But pre 7.0) goals. I would have thought that meant
the release of a SlimServer 6.6 almost by definition.

[slim] Re: Slimserver Version 7.0 on downloads page

2006-08-27 Thread Mark Lanctot

Looks like they've just put this info up there. Give the guys a chance,
it's a Sunday morning in California...

Ordinarily to see the new features/fixes you'd take a look at the
changelog, but that's broken right now:

7.0 - This is the latest alpha pre-release (yes, we really mean it)
development version of SlimServer. It may be unstable at any given
time. Download this version if you are interested in new features, the
latest bug fixes, and don't mind reporting new bugs. *Read the change
 log here.*

(emphasis by me) Change log points here:
http://svn.slimdevices.com/*checkout*/trunk/server/Changelog7.html
which is erroring out on me right now.

The software roadmap, which gives a view of the directions and goals as
opposed to the detail of the changelog, is here:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SoftwareRoadmap

Last updated by Dan on July 21, which IIRC is right after they
announced the Transporter which will be powered by 6.5, so it's still
fairly current.

Note there will be post-6.5 but pre-7.0 stuff, so maybe a 6.5.1
release, although this is more than just bugfixes so possibly a 6.6.

Give them a chance to sort this all out. Early days yet, 6.5 is still
not official and I believe KDF stated that 6.5 will shortly be
splitting into stable and still beta branches (6.6?)

[slim] Problems playing ogg.m3u radio from NAS

2006-08-27 Thread Autodromo

Hi all. I recently moved the slimserver application from a computer to
my Synology DS101G+ NAS and it works like a charm.

I now feel that I have the optimal system, but I have one problem; I
can't play the radio playlist files that I used when slimserver was
running on the computer. These are ogg.m3u files that I paste into the
slimserver internet radio field and save as playlists, like
http://media.hiof.no/streams/m3u/nrk-mpetre-172.ogg.m3u

Any idea why the squeezebox says can't open the file now and not when
slimserver was running on a computer. I thought it was a folder sharing
problem but I can't figure it out

[slim] Re: Dumb networking question

2006-08-27 Thread totoro

Hmm. Just out of curiosity, I turned WEP back off. Now it got an IP
address.

I had 2 different people look at the WEP key I entered, and they
thought it looked exactly like the one on my router config and my
laptop: then I had them try entering it: nothing (I did this to try to
eliminate user error as the cause-- clearly this might not have worked,
but I don't think the probability of that being the case is terribly
high).

Interestingly, I only turned WEP on yesterday, at a friend's insistence
(I do have mac address filtering on, though).

The several months I had the squeezebox working, I had the network
open. I realize this is a security hole, but my attitude is that anyone
who can break through my firewall to do anything really bad is perfectly
capable of breaking through the wep.

So I guess I'll go back to having an open network for now (the idea of
going back to a cd player is so unpleasant that I'd much prefer going
back to leaving my network open :)).

Thanks everybody for all the help.

Re: [slim] Re: Slimserver Version 7.0 on downloads page

2006-08-27 Thread kdf

This is nothing new, folks.

Trunk remains experimental, and there is a branch for what will be
considered stable and only for tested fixes. As 6.3.x has been release
and done for some time now, and 6.5 is due for release, this means 6.5
is now being branched as a stable build.

There is always the transition time, and for at least a few days 7.0
will be exactly what 6.5 is. no changes, therefore no changelog.

To find out what is going on, you simply have to watch.

Try a different, very easy to enter WEP key. Either you have the wrong
key, or else the SB's WEP implementation isn't compatible with your
router.

Tried an easier 64-bit key instead of 128. Nothing. I, too have begun to
suspect some kind of WEP incompatibility. After googling
my router, I found that a lot of people have complaints about it,
although I never had problems with my ex-wife's laptop, and my new one
works fine. I agree with you that this seems like the most probable
culprit.

I was thinking I'll just get a newer router that does 211.g at some
time soon, and see if that fixes things. At this point, since I have
music again, I'm happy :).

Thanks for the help.

Checkins list very carefully for the bombs that will be dropped there.

I'm a little surprised at the jump to 7.0 myself, since the Software
Roadmap (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SoftwareRoadmap) shows
some Post 6.5 (But pre 7.0) goals. I would have thought that meant
the release of a SlimServer 6.6 almost by definition.

Generally speaking, you branch off the next major dev branch _before_
you branch off the next minor point release. That way, today, new major
functionality that's too big for 6.5 can get started in the 7.0 branch,
but bug fixes and small stuff will still go in 6.5. Later, when 6.5 is
closer to release, a new 6.6 branch will be created for small features
and bug fixes, and only the most critical fixes will go in the 6.5 branch.

It's not that different from when the 6.3 branch was created months
after 6.5 work was well underway.

should all thank Andy for adding this feature. Andy has mentioned that
RadioTime will also be available in the next upgrade for Squeezebox

There are currently 2 active branches. 6.5 is in late beta, and only
small new features and bug fixes are being done in this branch. It will
very likely ship on or about the september release date of the
Transporter. 7.0 is in early alpha. Major new functionality will be
added to that branch, and on any given day, it might reformat your
harddrive or download scads of free music for you from iTunes.

At some point in the future (probably in 2 or 3 weeks), you can expect
6.5 to get locked down even tighter, with only critical fixes going in,
and a 6.6 branch to get started for small features and bug fixes.

Once 6.5 ships, small feature work will continue in the 6.6 branch, and
a new 6.5.1 branch will be created for critical fixes.

In general, if there are multiple active branches, the smallest version
number will always be the next one that ships, and thus the most stable.
A good rule of thumb is that the more branches currently exist, the more
likely a beta branch is to be stable (because big work isn't going into
it, it's going into one of the further off branches). However, by the
same token, the more branches that exist, the _less_ likely you'll be to
see a fix for any given bug going into the most stable branch --
because, unless it's really critical, it'll get pushed off to one of the
less stable branches.

no problem.

7.0 is a stable branch of 6.5 which will not be changing. 6.5 is still
in development as before - correct?

7.0 is the trunk. Subversion trunk is always the bleeding edge.
6.5 has just been branched (around rev 9178 I believe). From this
point onward, 6.5 will only get
fixes and tweaks that have had some testing time in the trunk or are
critical needs. By definition, this makes 6.5 now a 'stable' build.

Or is it that 6.5 is considered most stable?

most stable is not a phrase I'm prepared to use. Most is
subjective, and will depend on the needs of the individual user.
What is true is that 6.5 should no longer be seeing any big new feature
shifts, which are the thing most likely to cause long term
probability of bugs. There are still bugs that remain in 6.5, as
anyone can see from a search on bugzilla. Hopefully most, if not all,
of these can/will be fixed within the timeline of 6.5. There is always
the chance that some bugs will be determined to require large rework in
order to be fixable. In those cases, the fix would have to wait for
7.0, or maybe a 6.6 if it is determined that there is a reason for a
release at that level.

After 6.5 is released, if there are minor problems found at that time,
you will likely see the 6.5 branch get renamed to 6.5.1, while the 7.0
trunk will remain 7.0 and experimental. Nothing from 7.0 would be
thrown in to 6.5.1 without the same kind of conditions as we have now
for putting something into 6.5.

Please could you put this in terms which us simplton non developer
types and understand.

hopefully I have :)

Yes, no doubt you have some of those types of bugs that I mentioned
above. Unfixable without larger framework changes. 6.5 works very
well for me. There are the aforementioned issues, and those will vary
in importance for each user. At this point, I should think that most
users either won't see the issues or finds them to be nothing that
can't be lived with. I haven't checked if the nightly builds are
sorted out with the latest branch (as I use subversion), but I would
encourage at least considering a look at 6.5 before it is released if
you are counting on a fix for a particular issue.

this question is a lot like mine:

which got no love, guess i'm unpopular. ;)

anyway, are you guys saying mp3tag is smart enough to know to take
Folder.jpg from the dir the files are in, and only embed it only in
those files it shares the dir with?

i thought mp3tag got its art from the net only, i didn't know you could
tell it to do this, (use local art and match it to the files in the same
dir).

has anyone done it successfully yet? i would love to be able to do
this for friends who need it embedded. thx.

Unfortunately there's no way to do this automatically.

You can do it without a rescan by finding the new stuff through Browse

I tend to agree that MusicIP seems to complicate things. It seems to

[slim] Re: Slimserver scan procedure needs some serious work!

2006-08-27 Thread Michaelwagner

MrSinatra;131530 Wrote:
the problem with your argument is:

 1. Slim HOSTS the website the forum is, and reads the forum, and posts
 to it.

Sorry, I don't see the relevance of this.

I used to own an audiotron. Voyetra, the people who made the audiotron,
ran a forum for enthusiasts. Here you go, here's some disk space and a
forum to talk amongst yourselfs. It was very clear, as it is very clear
here, that this is not the official support channel.

Some Slim people, the wrong people, as I pointed out, not the support
staff, read the forums.

It's still fundamentally the wrong place to find support.

  2. The OP directed his comments to the people at slim specifically, but
obviously wanted others to see them, for reasons which are his own, but
 not by necessity illegitimate.

He also provided a diagnosis, and a slur. As I will explain later, his
diagnosis was incorrect and his slur uncalled for.

 3. he is totally free to post his comments, regardless of whatever they
may be, to anyone he wants... he doesn't have to fulfill your
expectations as to what is allowed content and what is not.

I see. So the OP, by virtue of being OP, is allowed to say anything,
and the people in this forum, who have helped hundreds, perhaps
thousands of friendly people here, are not allowed to object to
trolls?

How come he's allowed to say anything he wants and we aren't? How come
KDF doesn't get the same freedom to say what's on his mind as the OP
did? Doesn't this seem just a teeny tiny bit hypocritical to you?

 4. just to put a FINE point on what i am saying:

no one, repeat, NO ONE would buy the hardware, if it didn't have
 software to make it work.
are you with me so far???

Yes. But you've got the wrong fine point, and you're not yet with the
program.

Slimserver is available for download before you buy. You can try it all
out, all of it, including a Squeezebox emulator, before you buy. If you
don't like the scan time, if you find it all that onerous (15 minutes
on my system is not onerous, but the OP had a different experience),
you could make that choice and not buy. It's the ultimate kick the
tires before you buy policy.

After that, there's a 30 day money back no questions asked policy.

After that, in fact, Slim has been very generous whenever I've had a
problem, in a number of cases long after the 30 days were up.

After that, the experience of the OP was atypical. Vastly atypical, as
my several postings about performance pointed out. So we asked him to
see what was different about his system, to post logs, so we could
figure it out. I have some experience poking around in the scanning
section, and so do quite a few others here, so we might have been able
to steer him in the right direction towards a solution.

so when someone has a complaint about SS, its a stupid cop out to say
the complaint should be ignored b/c SS itself is free.

I never said the complaint should be ignored. Neiter, as I recall, did
KDF. In fact, KDF asked 3 times to see the logs. If we can't see the
diagnostic information, the complaint pretty much HAS to be ignored,
because there's no information to go on.

i say anyone who can't see that is willfully blind.

My point exactly. Where in the whole wide world can you find someone
who can fix software by telepathy? Just whine at me for a while, insult
me and call me an intern, and from the sound of your voice I can tell
you that you entered the wrong directory name for the music folder.

It ain't gonna happen.

Now, about the scanning.

My background is in performance measurement and analysis. Something
like 6 to 9 months ago, I did some measurements of the scanning code.
Dan had done some different measurements, from a different perspective
(I think he did his first, but I didn't find out about them until I
produced my results). I had also written some code, in a different
language, but still an interpreted one, to do much the same job. My
code was more than half an order of magnitude faster.

So I measured the scanning code. The part of the scanner that reads the
MP3s (I only looked at the MP3 case) is only about 20% of the work. The
rest of the time is taken up in the database code.

The database is another open source package, written by some other
people. It's a simple minded database package, easy to use, but
confined to a single user at a time, and it doesn't scale well to
larger datasets.

So it's not really Slims code that is taking the time. At least for
6.2, the bottleneck is the database.

So the major improvements being worked on and prepared for 6.5 this
fall are:

to move to a separate thread for scanning, so that long scan delays
won't effect music quality or cause interruptions,

to move to a more sophisticated database that doesn't die when
presented with large amounts of data.

Also, the scanning thread becomes, to the database, a separate user, so
it had to be a multi-user database.

Despite all that, 8,000 to 10,000 tracks should take about 15 minutes
on

Actually beta is a misnomer.

The latest version of slimserver is always available from svn, and
snapshots are available nightly. These are not beta editions. They are
development snapshots.

I guess the closest we get to beta releases is when a branch is created
(e.g. the recent 6.5 branch).

Personally, I run the latest code, and sync to svn regularly. I've never
experienced any major issues, apart from when there are big changes,
like the change to split-scanner, etc.

[slim] Problems with version 6.5b1 - 9182

2006-08-27 Thread norderney

Just tried upgrading from version 6.3.0 to 6.5b1 - 9182 running with
Windows XP. I have Squeeze Box 1.

Got a couple of problems.

1. When displaying the track title on the web interface, the track
title appears all the time simply as 9. This happens for every track I
have looked at so far.
It displays the album name and artist name correctly. Also the correct
track title appears on my Squeeze Box.

2. Various Artist albums appear multiple times!! This was not
happening with version 6.3.0. But this is only affecting various
artist albums which were ripped a long time ago. Recently ripped ones
are ok!! I have gone from having 1550 albums to 6266 albums!!!

Any advice would be much appreciated.

issue is the windows media headers.

[slim] Re: Slimserver scan procedure needs some serious work!

2006-08-27 Thread Michaelwagner

I think, Mr. Sinatra, that you're missing an important point.

He didn't take the car back to the dealer.

We told him several times to call support at slim.

He came (in your analogy) to a car club or a swap meet, a group of
enthusiasts anyways, and complained. We thought he was looking for
help, tried to help, now we're here.

As for the idea that this is an enthusiast site, no complaints
allowed, have you actually been reading other threads? There are
dozens of complaints daily, some turn into support like threads, some
turn into grumbling, etc.

But to come in swinging, saying the clown who wrote this should go
back to school, well, it's uncalled for and I find it disrespectful.

I don't have thin skin. As I've said before, he didn't bother me at
all, but he did bother some other people. Maybe they were having a bad
day. Maybe they took it more personally. Whatever. There does seem to
be a double standard, that he can jump all over people but expects
nothing to happen in response.

Newtons' law ... every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

I don't think we're a bunch of cheerleaders here ... there are things I
wish Dan, Sean and Dean had done differently. And I've told them so,
sometimes in open forum, sometimes in private email.

But it wouldn't occur to me to call them interns (or other names)
because I have too much respect for the documented body of work they've
done.

In the end, I think that's the issue. They may have made a mistake in
coding, they may have made a mistake in design, but
that doesn't make them amateurs or interns or clowns.

Except on April 1st.

I have a lot of respect for what Slim has done, for doing the sort of
quality of work I would have done if it had been my company and my
time. They do good work. The slim client, the server, the trade-offs,
etc.

Some of the tradeoffs I would have done in a slightly different place,
some things I would have chosen to do somewhat differently, but
basically they've been transparent and clear about their direction,
much more than most technology companies I've dealt with.

Try to get the sort of co-operation we get daily from Slim out of
Voyetra, or Microsoft, or Creative or any of these guys. Hasn't
happened to me ever.

So I think we need to have a little more respect for Slim in this
forum.

And for each other.

2006-08-27 Thread Plano_Mike

Blue Sky Audio MediaDesk.

Intended for mixing. A little pricey, but very accurate sound.

There are ways to automate the rescan using a script that connects to
the CLI. Have a look at blackbear's post here you'll see a linux
 example

and you -should- be able to do something similar with a batch file in
 windows.

Thanks, I will give that a look.

[slim] Re: Next Release for Beta Slimserver- What New Features ?

2006-08-27 Thread NY2006

Not to forget the neighbours to the north.
Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, Victoria, etc.

Good news RadioTime which is a radio guide for streaming radio
stations. you can read more about them at http://www.radiotime.com

Anyway all you need to do is be using SlimSever 6.5b and create a user
name at RadioTime and your ready to search for radio stations using
SlimServer. I'm told RadioTime will be in the next upgrade of
Squeezebox Network.

[slim] Multiple Network Shares for my Music Folder

2006-08-27 Thread goinoutwest

I've got music on 3 servers. I want all of that music to be available
to slimserver.

Here's what I've done:
1) I have a windows NT domain. The slimserver service is running as
Domain Administrator. (I'll lock it down later).

2) I have set slimserver (running on XP) to use a local folder (on the
local C: drive) as the Music Folder

3) That music folder contains NO music. It does contain shortcuts to
the music folders on the OTHER servers. The shortcuts use UNC pathing.
For example:

\\server1\music1
\\server2\music2
\\server3\nested1\nested2\music3

Oh yeah, there's also a shortcut to the local C:\music4 folder in
there. That's the only one that slimserver lets me access via the
Browse Music Folder feature.

Thanks for any help!
Rob

[slim] Re: I Just Want My Music

2006-08-27 Thread aubuti

Sorry if I'm rehashing the obvious, but have you already contacted Slim
tech support via email or phone? It's perfectly reasonable to want to
get them to walk you through it, but your chances of success are much
better by contacting them directly instead of through the forums. Hope
you get it sorted out.

[slim] MusicIP and Various

2006-08-27 Thread agentsmith

I have been having problem with Various Artists appearing as seperate
entries since 6.31 (I think).

I did some experiments with Compilation tags and it works as one album
with SlimServer accessing the files diretly (e.g. C:\My Music.) But
when reading from MusicIP database, the entries appear as seperate
albums.

Does anyone have any solution for MusicIP and Various?

[slim] Re: Powered speakers

2006-08-27 Thread Pale Blue Ego

The Aegos have a WAF that is off the charts. They're extremely easy to
integrate into almost any decor (or hide completely). Great sound for
the price. I've got 3 sets of them and they work beautifully with the
SB3. Excellent computer speakers, too.

I'm not sure, but maybe it would help if you mapped those shares to a
drive letter on your main slimserver machine.
