[slim] Re: Let's here some suggestions for SlimServer 7

2006-09-01 Thread hickinbottoms

I'm sure there are some good ideas in here, but I wonder whether the
wiki might not be a better place to build a 'wishlist' page?

That would allow a quick summary of the ideas to be listed, and if any
of the ideas would benefit from a fleshing-out then they could link to
their own wiki page, or to a bugzilla enhancement if the idea is to be
pushed into a real development, perhaps?

The list/forum is a good place for discussion, but once discussion dies
down I suspect the memory of these ideas will just fade away.

I don't mind starting one off (and copying the ideas from this thread),
if there's any consensus and other people would chip in. I'd be happier
if Slim Devices said they'd use it before I did that, though!

Just an idea.

Rather than practice what I preach, though, here's my idea...

I'd like the toggle list of plugins on the server settings-plugins
page to also be a list of hyperlinks to the plugin settings further
down the page. I always find it a bit of a trudge scrolling down a
large left pane when there are a lot of plugins to find the section for
a particular plugin - if I could just click on the plugin title at the
top of that page and be scrolled down automatically it would be a lot
quicker.

I'd like to see a web-based interface for installing plugins. i.e. come up with a packaging standard (even if it is just a zip file of the plugin distributable) and allow the user to upload the file to the server. Then have the server install everything in the right place. Beyond the basics, the system should then deal with versioning, server compatibility (server version and OS), and automatic updates - the firefox extension system being a good example.

I thought about this, too. This would imho be (like many of the other
suggestions in this list) a great opportunity for a plugin author or
somebody who'd like to know more about the slimserver's innards to get
started with. Nothing everybody wants, thus no core functionality to be
built into slimserver, but really handy if you have use for it.

[slim] Re: Duplicate Album entries when using CUE sheets

2006-09-01 Thread autopilot

Hi there.

I created that bug report. Unfortunatly CUE sheet support has always
been a issue for slimserver, 6.3.1 is not different. For this reason i
use 6.5b (which is looking pretty good for CUE sheets).

There are a couple of things that can help with 6.3.1;

1. keep the CUE and image in the same folder.
2. emebed the CUE into the IMAGE file as a tag. Can help buts does not
work for every format.
3. remove the 'album' tag from the image file or set it to something
like Image files. you will have an album entry in slimserver called
image files where all the images files are which is neater (just
removing the album tag will give you an entry called no album

These work arounds may help but i would suggest trying a few beta for
size.

Dom.

This might already be in SS, so forgive me if it is, but I would love

For example, IMHO, KCRW is one of the world's greatest public radio

they do is archive all of their shows on a searchable page on their
website. Some of these shows are music based (for example, a one-hour
interview and performance session with the Flaming Lips, or Tom
Waits, or whatever), some of which are news/information based. What
would be amazing is the ability to select one of these archived shows
and instead of playing with Windows Media, Real Audio or Itunes/
Quicktime, but rather, send to a Slim agent, that could then play
through Squeezebox. Of course, I know there are ways to record or
archive locally and then add those to the slim playlist, but this
takes considerable effort and sometimes these broadcasts are not
something that you would want to preserve for multiple listenings.

I realize that this would be a technically challenging, but why stop

One view of this is that you're asking a lot for slimserver to anything
very clever with WAV files, when it is so dependent on tags.

However, since I think we are in brainstorming mode (therefore no
criticism allowed ) perhaps I can try to turn this round a little. Is
what you are looking for actually an enhancement to tell slimserver to
guess tags other than artist/album/title from file names? EG have an
option to tell it that the file structure is in the form
genre/artist/album/track and to populate the database appropriately?
You'd need this to be user configurable, of course. That would seem
neat, doable, and meet the requirement?

Potentially expandable for other tags too, like Year? You'd need to be
sure you were consistent in you file structure for it to be useful,
though.

[slim] More Radio Fun Alien BBC

2006-09-01 Thread Tristan

Hi all,

Sorry if this is just me being stupid.

I have a laptop and also a PC as a dedicated music server both of which
have slimserver installed with the correct version of Alien BBC as a
plugin

All has been fine listening to radio, music etc from either the server
or the laptop. Both PC's are runing XP.

Last night I got home and powered the lap top and went to listen to
Radio 1 from Alien BBC and it woudn't work. The squeesbox said
something like incorrect URL or stream and displayed the address for
the stream but woudn't play.

Hmm. I turned the laptop off and powered the other PC. I restarted the
Squeesbox and connected to it and lo and behold Radio 1 (and the
others) played.

Nothing had been done to the laptop other than booting it up. It worked
fine the day before and had been turned off normally..

I unistalled Slimserver on the laptop and loaded a fresh install. I
re-installed Alien BBC and restarted it and tried again. It still wont
play radio.. Thats any radio by the way not just Alien BBC channels. It
does play if you test it on the laptop speakers. Eg is IS streaming the
right address but the squeesbox isn't having it!

This has happened once before for seemingly no reason and last time the
reinstall sorted it.

Any ideas?

Ta

By coincidence - I came across that station last night when browsing
picks, I think from RadioTime.
Left it on for 2 hours as we prepared and ate dinner - thought it was
great.

Will go off to look at their Listen Again - but sounds like being
able to process like AlienBBC does with other stations would be
worthwhile. Neededn't wait for post-6.5 for that though - just needs

[slim] Degraded Wireless Network Performance

2006-09-01 Thread Rigel

I have just received my SB3. It is all set up - I have a Dlink DI-264
wireless access point, and 2 computers. I have 1.5M DSL.

Without SB3 plugged in and slimserver shut down - my wireless network
performance is great - both computers on, moving files between them,
both on the internet.

When I use SB3 - it works fine - no dropouts, no problems. However, my
computers are very degraded when attempting to surf the Internet.

Shut SB3 off, disconnect it, unplug it - the wireless performance is
immediately back to normal.

Is this normal, is there anything I can do to improve the performance?
I've checked resource usuage via TaskManager - CPU is typically 0-2%,
plenty of memory and LAN, Wireless utilizatino is about 0.28% with SB3
playing.

with just some albums and tracks unavailable to one of the players. I
wouldn't want to maintain two libraries for this purpose as that would
waste a lot of disk space and be a hassle when I wanted to add music.
Now expand that to someone with several players and it really gets
impractical.

My idea was merely to have a way to apply some sort of filter to your
library (or libraries if multiple libraries were ever supported) to
control what songs each player has access to.

[slim] Re: Degraded Wireless Network Performance

2006-09-01 Thread Siduhe

Do you mean a Dl-624 rather than a 264 ? And if so, do you know which
revision ?

If so, does the router have any setting which prioritises streaming
traffic (bittorrent / VoIP / music) over normal internet usage ? I
used to have similar problems when I first installed my Belkin router,
until I realised this setting was enabled by default.

Is there any difference with Super G Turbo mode switched on / off ?

One other thing to check is that you have the latest firmware installed
for your WAP. There was a new release of firmware last month for all
624 revisions, I believe for improved performance.

2006-09-01 Thread Siduhe

Could you describe your set up in a bit more detail - I'm a little
confused as to why you need to have Slimserver installed on both laptop
and PC ? If you are trying to use both interchangably and both are
using Port 9000, I can see why one might not work - they could conflict
with each other.

You normally only need one instance of slimserver installed (say on the
PC) and then you just access that instance via a webpage on the laptop.

If you have more than one SB connected to a seperate instance of
slimserver, then I can't think why that wouldn't work.

2006-09-01 Thread Tristan

Hi There,

OK.

I have two instances of slimserver. I don't run both at the same time.
The first one is on the PC. I was intending to use just the PC for
streaming originally. The reason for having the two setups now ive been
having some network problems with drivers on the PC and so I am getting
intermittant network dropouts whilst using it. My laptop suffers no
such problems.

Music files off either PC / Laptop are playing fine.

Just to be really complicated I also have two squeesboxes that are
synched. The problem is the same across both.

To switch the squeesboxes to use either the PC or the laptop I tell it
to use the different source stream under network settings / setup. I
dont think thats an area of problem.

Does that help?

[slim] Wireless range

2006-09-01 Thread gian

Hi All,

I started a thread a couple of weeks ago about signal strenght.
My SB2 seemed to be much deafer that other wireless devices I have, and
I could not use it at my bedside, 'cause it was more distant from my AP,
with large wall in between and a marble staircase.

To add that, someone stated that SB3 had 30% less reception than SB2,
so I felt on a dead end.

I decided to purchase two SB3s anyway, and I'm happy to say that my SB3
is much more sensitive than SB2, and it works fine placed in my
bedroom.

To give some figures, I get 33% on my SB2 and 70% on my SB3.

I am planning to replace the SB2 antenna with a longer stud, but would
like to know if the insides of SB2 hide any trimmer or is there any
tinkering one can try to inprove wireless range.

regards,
-Gian

[slim] Upgrading to SlimServer 6.5: plugins?

2006-09-01 Thread matthijskoopmans

Hi

SlimServer 6.5 is due to be officially released shortly. I have tried
fairly recent builds of 6.5 while still in Beta. Unfortunately, I had
to go back to SlimServer 6.3.1, as many of the plugins seemed to give
problems... I am aware that some plugins have a separate 6.5 version
(i.e. slimscrobbler and last.fm radio), however, that did not do the
trick for me.

When 6.5 is going to be released, is there going to be a described
upgrade path? Would it be best to completely remove 6.3.1 before moving
to 6.5? Which plugins can we keep without any problems, and which should
we uninstall/upgrade?

I am very much looking forward to the official release of 6.5, as when
I run it clean (no 3rd party plugins) it was fast and reliable
(browsing albums was much quicker compared to 6.3.1). However, I am
reluctant to move from 6.3.1 if it means my favourite plugins are no
longer working :)

Regards,

Matt

On a whim I googled DI-624 slow down and there's a lot of information -- mostly related to BitTorrent. Probably every router out there has some negative info about it though so that's not saying much. I've ditched my share of routers -- finally settling on a linux box which is more reliable for me.

You could certainly try another antenna! I would think that a bigger
antenna may not be that impressive, but if you used a directional
antenna and pointed it right at your Access Point, you might see better
signal strength.

You could always try a DIY antenna, might be a fun project. Or you
could just buy one:

If you do go through such an exercise, please post your results, I'd
love to know!

If you want to open the SB2 you'll need a T10 (torx) driver.

Does 6.5 let people who use FLAC images and cues ride in the front of
the bus with everyone else?

These are the things that it seems I miss out on in 6.3:

- FF/RW inside tracks.
- (Album) Replay gain (? need to check this)
- Ability to put ARTISTSORT ALBUMSORT (by whatever name) into the cue
file.

Other than that, I think a driver to emulate a really long cable from
the soundcard might be nice, but I'm pretty happy with how it works.

No, I lied - a SoftSqueeze with updated certificates (credentials?)
would be handy, too.

Re: [slim] Re: Let's here some suggestions for SlimServer 7

2006-09-01 Thread Phil Meyer
I would like a way to customize your library by player. I have a SLIMP3
in my son's room and a Squeezebox in the living room. There are certain
tracks I don't want available to my son.

Interesting idea... as a variation on the theme, why not arrange for
this data to be stored in some tag or other in the music files?

A better solution would be to use multiple music libraries/personas.

Eg. you could have libraries/personas called Dads and Son's.
You could have 3 music folders - Dad's, Son's and Shared.
Dads persona could include Dads music folder and shared.
Son's persona could include Son's music folder and shared.

Son's Squeezebox could be configured to use Son's persona, so would use Son's
music library.
Living room Squeezebox could be configured to use Dad's persona.

Optionally, perhaps a persona could be configured with a password to restrict
access.
Optionally, perhaps restrict persona's to specific players.

I think this kind of support is so versatile, it could fit in with many
different user requirements.

[slim] Re: Let's here some suggestions for SlimServer 7

2006-09-01 Thread glem01

Hi,

while the discussions about the administration of music collections are
important and I mostly agree, there are other slimserver related issues
that shouldn't be forgotten:

1) try to reduce the footprint of SlimServer. This is very important
for the increasing use of small Linux fileservers (Synology,
Linkstation and others) where SlimServer has to run. Certainly it usees
too much ressources, mainly memory, compared to many other applications
running on the same systems. I know, it's perl interpreted, but even
then... Perhaps modularizing more and implementing more functions as
optional plugins? Maintain the core functionality as small as
possible.

2) implement native support for RSTP (upgrading the SQbox firmware).
It's quite a pain to get AlienBBC working on small machines (see
above). Or are there any copyright or technical issues for not doing
it?

3) optimize the Web interface for small devices like handhelds,
smartphones and so on. I usually don't carry a laptop with me.

Greetings, Manuel

I thought about this, too. This would imho be (like many of the other
suggestions in this list) a great opportunity for a plugin author or
somebody who'd like to know more about the slimserver's innards to get

[slim] Re: Degraded Wireless Network Performance

2006-09-01 Thread bgriffis

It sounds like a problem with your router. I thought a firmware upgrade
would fix your problem, but it looks like you're already on the latest
firmware.

Does your laptop have a 802.11g card in it? If so, double-check that
the D-Link router is configured for g only and not mixed mode.
That will make better use of the available bandwidth. One other
possibility might be to turn off security if you're using it. You
could probably get by with MAC address filtering to keep people from
free-loading on your internet connection.

Of course if all this fails I recommend you get a new router.
Personally I despise the D-Link routers. I'd recommend a Linksys
WRT54GL if you want something high quality at a decent price. You can
pick one up for $40-$60.

Good luck! I hope you get your issue solved!

[slim] Re: Let's here some suggestions for SlimServer 7

2006-09-01 Thread jtfields

A better solution would be to use multiple music libraries/personas.

Eg. you could have libraries/personas called Dads and Son's.
You could have 3 music folders - Dad's, Son's and Shared.

I can see where the support for multiple libraries and personas could
be used to acheive my goal, however, I don't really see that as a better
solution. That would require me to change the way I organize my music
(which is used for more than just the my Squeezeboxes.) Also, your
method becomes somewhat difficult for someone with a lot of players
because one shared folder probably wouldn't do.

For example, say you have three players and song A is shared by players
1 and 2 but not 3, however, song B is shared by players 2 and 3 but not
1. And, of course, there's song C shared by players 1 and 3 but not 2.
A single shared folder would not do. Toss in more players and really
big libraries and it could start to get really complex. The only way to
manage that with folders would be to start having a separate library for
each player which would end up with a lot of redundancy and use a lot of
disk space (not to mention making adding music a little more
cumbersome.)

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of SlimServer supporting multiple
libraries and being able to control which players see which libraries.
However, my personal preference is to also be able to filter at the
album, track and playlist level for each player. In other words, I
want to be able to look at a track and say I want player 1 and 2 to
see it but not player 3.

A nice GUI for this would be my check box idea.

[slim] Re: scrobbler help

2006-09-01 Thread smc2911

I find the scrobbler is still playing up. For example, submissions were
going yesterday, with the last posted track being the last played of
the evening. Today I just realised nothing had been posted. I did a
manual submit and now the last 10 tracks are up, but I've played at
least 40 today, so it looks as though the earlier ones have been lost.
This time I haven't been mucking around with the server (i.e. no
upgrades, restarts, etc).

[slim] Re: chumby: a possible touchscreen wifi remote?

2006-09-01 Thread Tzvi

I found out about this device a few days ago and I would it to be able
to control my squeezebox. I am setting up for squeezebox as a whole
house audio system and therefore will be controlling the whole thing
via PC and not really touching the device itself. If I could get a
bedside remote it would be great. Right now I have to use my laptop to
change music, and my wife still hasn't figured out how to control it
100% (She only knows how to start her favorite playlist and control
volume.)

Wow... that was a long ramble that contributed nothing. Sorry.
