that debug option only puts out something during a scan. Did you run a
scan?
d_itunes has messages for loading the plugin, finding the xml file and
checking status. This does not require a scan.

I have been using 6.3 with mysql and when I switched to 6.5 I had to
change:

Code:

  dbsource: dbi:mysql:database=slimserver

To:

Code:

  dbsource: dbi:mysql:hostname=127.0.0.1;port=3306;database=slimserver

Slimserver itself seems to partly work without this change, but the
scanning process failed to connect to mysql if I didn't make this
change. With 6.5b2 they both work but with 6.5.0 only the later seems
to work, at least this is the case in my setup.

I'd say this is a feature: if slimserver doesn't find tag information, it
tries to do a best guess from your folder/file structure (see Server
Settings/Formatting/GUESS TAGS FORMATS)

- any empty YEAR tag is shown as "0"

What would you except?

Setting / information:
- Player IP and number of players are changed.

Could you please explain this further? Slimserver isn't responsible for IP
addresses. But if your players are in DHCP mode (automatic configuration)
then they can change IP address whenever they are restarted.

Try doing an un-install and then a re-install using 6.5.

Most of the 6.3 plugins aren't compatible with 6.5, and they aren't
removed on install either, so that might explain your crashing.

6.5 is worth the upgrade, and it's running strong on my windows box.
But 6.3 and 6.5 don't play nice.

According to that log, mysql is quitting because you are trying to run
it as root, and mysql doesn't like that, as it's a security risk.

Easiest (and safest) way to get around that is to create a user for the
slimserver (and thus the mysql process) to run as, and then invoke
slimserver as that user.

Could be that that just such a user was already created as part of the
install process. Check /etc/passwd to see if you have some kind of a
slimserver user.

ehlarson,

If you want to use your existing mysql instance, create a database for
slimserver, and create a new mysql user with full permissions to that
database.

Then, edit slimserver.pref and change these lines, putting the
appropriate info where necessary:

dbpassword:

Sounds like maybe you're using sudo?

I was starting SlimServer 6.3.x just fine as the slimserver user using
sudo in /etc/rc.local, and that was failing on 6.5. I could su to the
slimserver user and start slimserver.pl, but could not execute it via
sudo.

Did some poking and ended up adding -H to the sudo flags and could
again start slimserver.pl as the slimserver user using sudo.

Old sudo line:
/usr/local/bin/sudo -u slimserver \ /usr/local/slimserver/slimserver.pl
--daemon --d_server \ --logfile=/usr/local/slimserver/log.txt

New sudo line:
/usr/local/bin/sudo -H -u slimserver \
/usr/local/slimserver/slimserver.pl --daemon --d_server \
--logfile=/usr/local/slimserver/log.txt

[slim] Re: Uninstall Slimserver 6.3 prior to installing 6.5

2006-09-21 Thread jeffluckett

Don't consider this an "official answer", but I would say that it'd be
best to un-install the 6.3 before installing 6.5.

The only reason I could think of that you wouldn't want to do this is
A. you don't want to do a rescan or B. you don't want to reinstall your
plugins.

However ... since they're moving from sqllite to MySQL on this release,
you'll need to rescan anyway, and most of your 6.3 plugins won't be
compatible with 6.5. So, reasons A&B are out the door.

So ... with that said ... uninstall, and do a clean install, and avoid
any possible "version poisoning" that could occur by installing 6.5
over 6.x. Frankly, I think they could've made the install for 6.5 a
little "smarter", but I think they rushed the release due to the need
to supporth the high-dollar transporter they're currently shipping to
consumers, and needs 6.5 to run.

I tried to build them. The DBD one wouldn't compile until I installed

So, after an hour of screwing around, slimserver finally ran, but now
there are "0" albums in library and the rescan function does nothing.

And I don't have any idea how to determine what's wrong. I assume it's
a sql problem, but where to I even begin to find the problem?? I

FWIW, I have a *lot* of problems switching between skins in both IE and

hung up in the browser caches. I have no problem, though, if I
explicitly designate the skin in the URL, as

http://192.168.9.3:9000/fishbone/

I stick to one skin now and only use the above form of URL to view the

It gets even better. There's skins that are optimized for handheld
devices, so If you've got a wifi card for your PDA, or look into one of
those Nokia770 devices, the laptop even drops out of the picture.

Another option (that I'm currently looking into), is to get a
touch-screen and run your browser in kiosk mode. There's even a skin
that's set up for touch-screen use.

Currently, my setup is SlimServer running in a box in the basement.
Squeezebox 3 connected wirelessly. Optical out to my main receiver,
and digital out to a receiver in another room.

I when listening on my "main" receiver, I control the SB with the
remote, and when I'm in the other room, I use a laptop ... or the pc in
another adjacent room. Ideally, I'll have my touch-screen set up here
so I don't need to fire up my laptop or go to the other pc to control
SB when in the "secondary" listening area.

No, mysql is the default and if you're running 6.5 you're already

Player settings are on the top-right above the "now playing" section
and player controls.

Not really sure about the album art thing ... all my art is already at
130px, so no scaling necessary, so I'll let someone else address that.

There's a settings link right above the player's side of the skin on
the right.

When I switched to fishbone, I had to spend a bit of time getting used
to where everything was. I really like it. Explore away.

you don't need 'home'. Everything is listed in the pulldown as far as
radio, Browse and Plugin lniks. Help links are under Help. Server
settings are at teh top of the left side, player settings are at the
top of the right side just above and to the right of the player

also, some of my artwork is not scaling down to 130 pixels. so some

is this a skin or SS issue?

if it is only SOME images, likely it's an image issue. The server now
does the scaling of images (some ppl complained that the browser
scaling was bush-league), but it has limits as to the exact formats
that it can deal with.

simplest fix is to grab some different images for the problem artwork files.

First, are you on the same machine as SlimServer is installed on? If
not, then you need to use the IP address of the other machine instead
of localhost.

Second, if you are on the same machine, are you certain that SlimServer
is running? Check the task manager under "Processes" for slim.exe ...
make sure the "show processes for all users" is checked.

Assuming you are on the same machine and Slim.exe is running, try
typing http://127.0.0.1:9000 and see if that loads.

"Home" is a slightly different concept in the Fishbone skin. "Home"
refers to the section you have in the drop-down box, hence the reason
it changes when you hover over the mouse.

I agree this is a bit confusing, took me a while to get used to, but
overall Fisbone is my favorite skin.

You can get to the other options you may be looking for at "Home" by
clicking the "Help" link.

Sometimes when you switch skins, stuff gets all goofed up in the
browser cache. If you are on a PC, hit CTRL+F5 simultaneously to force
the browser to fully refresh, not use its local cached copy.

If all else fails, you can get to any other skin by simply specifying
it in the address bar like so.

http://[server_ip]:9000/[skin_name]

So to get to default:
http://[server_ip]:9000/default

Hope this helps!

I've seen some weird issue where the SB and server get's out of synch.
The power is off on the SB according to the web UI, but the player is

Using the Web UI to send a power off/on combo got the SB back in synch

If that doesn't work, I'd try a hardware reset. Hold down Add on the

[slim] small bug details in 6.5.0

2006-09-21 Thread SlimPvC

Maybe these have been reported, but I thought I'd mention them (the
bugzilla system is not very familiar to me).
The 6.5.0 version seems to be a big improvement - again.
These are some things I noticed after using it one day:

Format
- an empty album tag is filled in with what seems to be the last known
album name (should stay empty)
- any empty YEAR tag is shown as "0"

Setting / information:
- Player IP and number of players are changed.

Minor details

Thanks for the upgrade!

2006-09-21 Thread ModelCitizen

I have to agree that they should be simply saved, or not overwritten.
However this is not the case and as per usual, this is probably due to
the cross platform nature of SlimServer.
I know that I have seen posts about this before but I can't seem to
find them. The Wiki does not appear to have any info about it I can
find either.
At least you only have your config files to deal with. Since upgrading
to the full 6.5 I have no sound!

2006-09-21 Thread WrightDawg

Well I spent a couple of hours last night trying to figure this one out.
I updated the firmware on my SB3 as well as my SB1. Still my SB3 could
not connect. Finally in desperation I unplugged the SB3, plugged it
back in and it immediately told me to update the firmware (which I had
already done). It updated it again (or at least updated the same
firmware a second time) and voila! it worked like a charm. No more
stuttering, no more connection issues.

I can't account for the cause but the simple and desperate act of just
unplugging the SB3 did the trick. Good luck to the rest of you with
the same issue. Maybe this will work for you too?

Either, it would be good to know which files one must keep - or, surely
simpler - these files should be written to a separate directory on

Thank you again. In the end, (and before seeing your note, I have to
say), I did it the other way round: rather than fiddle about with the
whole network, I used the working ethernet/Airport Express connection
to reinstal the firmware (in effect resetting the machine). That
appeared to clear the password problem and all is now working as it

installed 6.5 over 6.3 and only one of my 3 SB's will connect and I get
a lot of funny messages on the playlist side of the server web page. I
uninstalled 6.5, rebooted and did a new install without any change.

About to try downgrading to 6.3 to see if it works for me.

[slim] Re: 6.5 Internet Radio - Connection Timed Out

2006-09-21 Thread radish

It used to be that the slimserver would act as a proxy for the stream,
so the SB connected to the slimserver which in turn connected to the
stream server. Now (it seems) the middleman (the slimserver) has been
taken out.

This is news to me too - I haven't upgraded to 6.5 yet but when I do
I'll have to do some serious tweaking as my players are on a private
network. H...

[slim] 6.5 - no sound at all

2006-09-21 Thread ModelCitizen

I've been running the 6.5 betas nightlies with very few problems.
Tonight I installed the 6.5 full release and updated the firmware.
Since then I've had no sound at all.
The VU meter on my Squeezebox2 doesn't register any audio although
apart from that the display is normal and looks like music is being
played, my headphone socket is quiet. I've tried running Softsqueeze
locally and still no sound.
I've tried flacs and mp3s and Internet radio. Still no sound. I've
rebooted everything to no avail.
flac.exe and lame.exe appear to be running but are not using any
processor power.

I haven't a clue what to do now.

I did keep my slimserver.pref and types.conf from my last beta
installation, but I have now tried getting the thing to work with the
ones from the new full release and also my saved files. Still no
sound.

This on XP.

Any suggestions as to what I should do would be very welcome indeed.

Ah-Ha! So the player now connects directly to the radio station - that

How is this different to connecting to radio in earlier versions? It

Many thanks.

It's not a problem, it's a feature. Now when you browse albums there's
an icon near the top (I can't remember if it's top left or right) that
toggles between list view and artwork view. And the really nice thing
is that you now have a choice of sort order, which you choose from a
dropdown menu. For example, a lot of us find sorting by artist more
useful than by album title.

[slim] 6.5 Installation not overwriting some files?

2006-09-21 Thread WSLam

While trying to diagnose a WMA related problem, I found out that the
files under \SlimServer\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread were not
updated when I installed 6.5.

I tried to reinstall, manually stop SlimServer, then reinstall etc, but
no use. The files remain the old versions from earlier versions. In fact
the files in the folder were dated from Nov 2005.

At the end, I manually deleted the files and install 6.5 again. And
sure enough, newer files are finally written into the folder.

Maybe the installation is not overwriting all the old files? Wonder if
anyone else has this problem or maybe this is just my machine acting
up?

So looks like a new problem with fontcache. The process is running as

obviously. I'll have to keep poking at it to get the server to start

but on that machine I have installed 6.5b2 in an empty database and
never upgraded the database structure from 6.3.

None of my artwork is displayed in Slimserver (official v.6.5). The new
way iTunes 7 stores artwork is apparently not supported by Slimserver
yet , but even my previously imported albums that have jpg's embedded

I have done the usual "Clear library and rescan", and also pointed

potential database export problems. Nothing helps though.

Does anyone have artwork showing up? I really like to see the artwork

The database schema is different from that used in 6.3, so SlimServer
will need to wipe it out, create a new one and rescan. You'd probably
be better off starting with an empty database.

I don't understand the error you're getting, but it doesn't sound like
it's trying to start the built-in MySQL, since you said that works.

[slim] SlimServer File Type settings

2006-09-21 Thread WSLam

Quick question. Under SlimServer File Types settings, for WMA, e.g., I
have:

Windows Media FLACwmadec/flac (Checked)
Windows Media MP3 wmadec/lame
Windows Media WAV wmadec (Checked)
Windows Media Windows Media (built-in) (Checked)

Question. I only have WMA Lossless, I know SB3 does not have native WMA
Lossless support, so it must either transcode to FLAC or WAV for
streaming. Question is how do I know what is SlimServer doing? to FLAC
or WAV when both are checked?

Thanks.

Windows Mobile Media is trash, utter trash. It cant do anything well,
even local content. It's pathetic on every level.

I recommend Conduites Pocket Player. It the best WM5 music play by far
and does streming quite well. If you want a free program for streaming,
you can also try Mortplayer or TCPMP (does music, but is really best for
video). But pocket player is worth the money IMO, try the others first
though.

That said, i dont really see the point of streaming from slimserver
when you can just stream the files directly over the network, which is
what i do with Pocket Player (which supports FLAC, Ogg, album art and
gapless playback and other things).

[slim] Re: Server Errors After Upgrading

2006-09-21 Thread anotherron

The problem was with the 'Default2' skin. Apparently, 6.5 setup does not
check the skin in the 'pref' file and make a change if necessary.
Additionally, it left 'Default2' in the HTML directory, which made me
think that all was OK.

Thanks everyone for the quick help and for a great product!

Excellent.

Dan's also provided a good fix for my problem (in the bug I referenced
earlier on), so we're both happy.

I'm going to give the MySQL wiki page a bit of a tickle since it's a
little out of date now we have 6.5.0.

Thanks Sidhue - Some of the folder names and track names have eg umlauts

Just a thought, but do your file names (not the tags, the file paths)
have any accented or unicode characters in ? If so, MIP does not
handle these well at all. I experienced something similar and renaming
the files without the characters solved the problem (after a full clear
and rescan).

[slim] Re: Slimserver 6.5 and MusicIP 1.7 getting along?

2006-09-21 Thread cherise

'Fraid my experience isn't so good, to the extent that I no longer have
MIP enabled.

No problems with being able to create mixes - issue is with the way
albums are presented. If I enable MIP (either with blank path in SS or
with the library path set)I find that multi disc sets are shown in
bizarre ways. For instance - Siegfried is a 4 disc set. I have the
tracks numbered sequentially through all four 'CD's as if they were in
one album, and all the tracks are in a single folder. The album name,
artist, composer (all non-track related tags) are exactly the same for
all tracks.

With MIP turned off the album is shown as one album (as set in
Behaviour)- no problem. But with MIP enabled I get variable numbers of
albums - the last time I tried this morning I had two albums, both
called Siegfried, each containing seemingly random tracks from the
original four CDs. In other cases there may be three or four albums
shown, with the same behaviour.

I've removed the MIP tags from the (FLAC) fles, deleted from MIP and
then revalidated. I've completely reinstalled SS more times than I care
to remember, re scanned, checked all tags in Foobar and Tag&Rename - you
name it, I think I've tried it.

If anyone has a fix - please let me know.

Cheers

Cherise

WinXP SP2, c14000 tracks, all flac, All non classical tracks one one
physical disk (K:\Popular) - this is SS library path and includes
shortcut to H:\Classical with all classical tracks. Tracks are in
Artist/Album folders

Yes, if you have things setup correctly.

In your MySQL server create a database for SlimServer to use. It can
have any name you like. Then create a user and give the user all
permissions to that database.

Stop SlimServer and edit the slimserver.pref file. Modify the
following three lines with the username and password, the host IP
adress and port and the MySQL database name. Use 127.0.0.1 for the
hostname if the MySQL server is running on the same machine as
SlimServer.

Code:

dbpassword: your_dbuser_password
  dbsource: dbi:mysql:hostname=192.168.9.4;port=3306;database=your_dbname
  dbusername: your_dbuser

Make sure your MySQL is running and then start up SlimServer.
SlimServer should create all the necessary tables within the database,
then begin scanning your library.

The Default2 skin was removed from 6.5.0. SlimServer 6.5 uses an
entirely new system for skinning the web interface and some of the old
skins couldn't be maintained. I'm guessing the installation/upgrade
process didn't take this into account, so your skin setting is pointing
to a non-existent skin.
